We found our wonderful and amazing dog here! The facility is state of the art. The animals are so well cared for. The cats have beautiful and clean cubbies and the dogs have large clean rooms. The staff are excellent at what they do! I was not expecting to be so wowed by an animal shelter. The puppy we adopted is doing so well. He's sweet and loving and very very smart! We feel we hit the jackpot. I highly recommend animal care league if you're looking to adopt a cat/kitten, dog/puppy, or rabbit. I unfortunately had the displeasure of adopting from the Animal Care League in Oak Park. I adopted a dog who had several ongoing health conditions that were evident in his medical history which was not disclosed at the time of adoption. They were informed that I did not have the financial capacity in order to accommodate a dog that would need significant financial commitment beyond standard vet appointments and care. When I took him to the vet, they pointed out several lifelong health issues that were extremely severe and would need hundreds of dollars' worth of treatment monthly. When I looked his past medical history, it seems to have been the shelter was pursuing ongoing treatment of these issues but decided not to inform me although I was very up front with my limitations. Additionally, I only had him for 5 days at the vet clinic they had discovered that he had a severe double ear infection to the point he was bleeding, clearly not something that developed in just a few days. When I adopted him, they told me and my family he was a healthy dog that would need little medical assistance and that he was vet checked which was clearly a lie considering the state we brought him home in. Over the past 5 days we have bonded and he has gotten along with all our family members and even our other dog. I unfortunately, had to surrender him due to the lack of disclosure of information, when I talked to the operations manager the solution she gave me was that she was sorry and that it can be hard to diagnose things. But looking in his medical chart there has been a long-standing issue with this very same problem and was once on the same very expensive medicine that we were expected to put him on. I am hurt that there was little to no resolution other than taking a dog away from a loving family that just didn't have enough money to accommodate to his needs, but also little accountability of their actions. The general manager was largely dismissive, never offered any solutions to me and my visibly extremely upset family. Instead, we left the office in tears with an "I'm sorry that happened". And just to highlight to any prospective adopters from this shelter in their contract it says they are not liable for any misinformation they may give as it may be from third party sources, in other words it is okay for them to misinform and lie to your face. But to leave this review on a more positive note I fortunately was able to treat his double ear infection before surrendering him, he is so deserving of a loving home unfortunately I just cannot afford a dog with such severe medical issues. read more

We had such a wonderful experience with ACL. We had been in search for a dog for a few years and very seriously right before the "you know what hit" and after that, it was close to impossible. ACL was always helpful and responsive since we first went to them a year ago. The hubz volunteered here in HS (ions ago, now) and always had great things to say about them. All other rescues were not the same experience with understandably high volume requests. The rep remembered our info from last year when we inquired about a cat-friendly pupper in need of a home. They were nice and friendly throughout our time there and very happy for our new family member. They weren't the most upfront about minor health issues before meeting but addressed everything in person and went through the adoption paper work thoroughly. They treat their animals so well and they do not euthanize them if they are unable to find a home. I'm not sure how they do it but I commend them so much for the work/volunteer that they do. Recently adopted my kitty and she was a great addition to the family! We were looking at a few cats there's and they openly shared health bills from the vets on location, openly shared if one was having issues. One of the cats we were looking at threw up and they called us the next day because we wanted to follow up because we were considering him or the cat we got, and they called and told us what was up the next day. (he was just an anxious baby). A lot of great pets it was hard to pick which one to bring home! The staff is great and obviously cares about all the animals! Love these guys! I've adopted twice from them. Once in 2002 and again in 2019 right before the pandemic. It was a miracle that I got to them in time because it was October and we started to get news in late November/sometime in December that something wasn't right with everything. Thank the good Lord! I found my precious baby girl! Her name is Pumpkin and she's a very rambunctious but sweet and very vocal girl! My daughter and I had rescued Shiloh (mom) and her son Buster from Chicago Animal Care and Control because it is a kill shelter although the number is decreasing because of the public choosing to rescue instead of buying expensive pets and numerous true rescue organizations that depend on volunteers and foster families that will care for them until they are adopted. I moved and we decided that Shiloh and Buster would stay with my daughter. I went on numerous websites searching for 2 bonded cats preferably seniors. Animal Care had that. Shortcake and Biscotti have been in and out of cages for most of their lives. What can I say?. I promised myself I'd never be one of "those" people. You know the ones obsessed with there dogs. Fast forward, we adopt our little angel lilo. She is a boston terrier and my furbaby. Yes I consider her my daugher I have a slight obsession. So, we needed to get my princess spayed. We choose animal care league. Thank god we did seriously. They were super sweet and the surgery went perfect. She barely has a little incision. She was a little groggy the first day but they even gave her pain killers. Don't Get Your Hopes Up like We Did! The Animal Care league of Oak Park makes it VERY difficult to adopt a pet. They threw MANY obstacles in our way and we were unable to adopt. Case in point - My husband and I met a Syberian Husky Mix, Nala, at an adoption event on Saturday afternoon. We put her on "Hold" which meant that we had until 6pm on Tuesday to officially adopt her and take her home. Obstacle #1 - MISINFORMATION; The info given to us about Nala at the adoption event did not match the info on their website (specifically her age). Understandably, we wanted to know more about this dog that we were seriously contemplating making a permanent member of our family! so we called the shelter to ask for clarification (no answer, so we left a voice message). Obstacle #2 - MORE MISINFORMATION; The Animal Care League didn't mention at the adoption event that since we live in a condo, we needed written consent from our Condo Association to adopt a medium size dog. They finally told us this information when they called us back Sunday evening (over 24 hours later). We visited the shelter Tuesday in hopes that we could take Nala home using the email consent we received from our condo board. We had consent (in an email) from our condo board but we were unable to get a formal letter in time to adopt before our "hold" expired....no dice (had we been informed about the condo letter at the adoption event, it would not have been an issue). Obstacle #3 - POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE; When we were at the shelter that Tuesday, they were not friendly and treated us like we weren't good enough to adopt their dog - how dare they pass judgement - we are good people doing a good deed and they treated us like 2nd class citizens! Obstacle #4 - POOR COMMUNICATION; the shelter said that there was a 2nd hold on Nala effective through 6pm on Thursday. We told them that we would send the formal letter from our board. They asked us to fax the letter and gave us a business card, but did not provide a fax number - the fax number is not on their business card or website so we emailed the letter to adoption@animalcareleague.org. They told us they would contact us if the 2nd hold fell through. Guess What - nobody claimed the dog and NOBODY CONTACTED US! It wasn't until WE called that we found out she was still available for adoption. Then they said they did not receive our letter because they admittedly "do not often check their email" Obstacle #5 - JUST BECAUSE - at this point I think they really do not want us to have this dog! They told us that the letter from our condo association (they finally checked their email) was not worded correctly (even though it said we are allowed to have a medium sized dog). So we had to go back to our condo board to get the wording changed (which is not a fast process). In the meantime Nala is at another adoption event and 2 more families put her on hold. The next morning, we physically brought the amended Condo letter to the shelter, but it was too late. Nala was adopted by another family. After hours of sadness and anger, I hope Nala has found a good home because apparently ours wasn't good enough...why else would the Animal Care League put so many obstacles in our way?! read more

Went here last week to adopt a bunny I saw online since my rabbit I currently have, Boomer, was depressed from losing our other small animal pet Cosmo, I had for going on 6 years. The specific one I was ready to adopt was Primrose and I was corresponding with one of the representatives from the shelter who instructed me to bring proof of identification, adoption form, adoption fee and bring all household members and pets. I loved by myself so I brought my rabbit. I came in at 3:45p the place closed at 5p which it stated online. Was not busy AT ALL it actually looked weird to me as soon as I came in that it reminded me of almost a library or insurance office. Everyone sitting at a desk and no animals in open site at all that you could see. When I came in there was a man there and he refused to let me proceed with adopting the rabbit I wanted online. I had everything ready. He told me I had to come back another day because they were closing. I told him that online it says you lose at 5p then he said well you needed an appointment to come in. Mind you no one mention anything about appointment to adopt. I have rescued other animals at other shelters and I never gotten this treatment. Then he asks well if you love in forest park you can come back tomorrow. Not considering my tone I took right now and blowing me off. This was the first time I came to this location but I usually always donate to a local animal shelter. This place has gotten donations from me in the past. I won't be sending you any more of my money nor will I EVER attempt to adopt from you AGAIN! With much disappointment that I couldn't give that bunny a home, because I constantly see them rotating an adoption post of the same bunnies online, I decided to take my Rabbit Boomer to PetsMart in Broadview to get him a few things and treats to cheer him up because he is so friendly and likes to be pet and held by the employees and other pet own customers. When I was there one of the employees walked up to my cart and pet Boomer and told me that he was adorable and that they have rabbits up for adoption from another shelter that are being stationed at their store. Now even though Animal Care League was asking for $100, I went in this PetStore with Boomer and adopted one of the 6 bunnies. She was a girl that I later renamed Bambi. I adopted her for $100 and gave them a $50 donation while I was there..I don't know why I was treated so bad at Animal Care League but everything happens for a reason, Bambi a 6 week old baby bunny girl INSTANTLY bonded with Boomer. My comment to Animal Care League, as a shelter you should try to get the animals adopted. You failed on your part. I was going to give you more than you asked and then some because I have a big heart and you robbed a bunny that was on your website for over 1.5 years of having a forever home because your employee wanted to be condescending and belittle me for coming to your location without an appointment which was never verbalized to me prior or written to me via email when I inquired if the rabbit was still for adoption or not. I rescued pets before from credible shelters and never gotten the treatment I got from you guys, You should be ashamed of yourselves! There is probably a good reason that you keep the animals not in the open because the up keep just be terrible from going off of the other below average reviews for your shelter. Write it as a lost animal care league. No more donations from me and no adoptions from me either. I just feel guilty because of the sweet animals that have you overseeing them to NOT be adopted. The volunteers that helped us were patient and knowledgeable, and took the time to find cats that would best fit our family (2 kids, new to pets) and lifestyle. I can not say enough good things about the staff and the adoption process here. My boyfriend and I adopted a 2 year old stray cat from them a little over a week ago. We saw a cat we really liked at Petco where they had an adoption day and Janet - the staff member from Animal Care League there - was so incredibly helpful. She took the time to talk to us about the cat's personality and whether or not she would be a good fit for us. We went to the shelter later that day to meet the cat in a calmer space and she really didn't want anything to do with us. Haha. Oh well. We walked around petting the other cats and talking to them to see if anyone else wanted to adopt US and once Petey (they called him Pantone there) saw us, he was ALL OVER US. He followed us everywhere we went and once we picked him up, he was sure to do everything he could to let us know we were his now. So a few days later, Petey came home with us. The adoption process was really smooth and everyone we encountered were incredibly friendly and helpful. You can tell they have a real love for the animals and that they are all well cared for. I called the Animal Care League a few days after adopting Petey to ask the vet a question and she was very helpful and took the time to answer all of my questions. We wanted to relinquish two stray kittens when I called ahead they had given me an appointment to come in. But once we got there the manager Mia was extremely rude and condescending. She didn't even let me say goodbye to the kittens or provide any information about them or their mom. I am beyond upset with them and I can't believe they would let such a horrible person be a manager. This experience was extremely awful and I'm worried for the safety and care of those kittens. A disappointing experience, that was nothing but a phone call. I live on the far West side of Chicago about 10 minutes from the Animal Care League. I had been working on catching the cutest litter of fluffy little muffin kittens roughly 8-12 weeks old and had finally caught 2 of them. My neighbor took 1 and I wanted to find a reputable organization to rehome the second rather than put an ad on Facebook or wherever. When I called ACL, the man who called said "call PAWS, they have all the resources- we don't". Hmm. Ok. Apparently I called the Bitter Care League. PAWS on Clybourn is 30+ minutes away from me. I would have GLADLY made a donation or paid for vaccinations/spay etc. Never even brought up- he was only interested in the zip code that a tiny kitten came from. Truly unfortunate, this is such a worthy cause and I would like to think the staff really loves animals and are here to help them all. read more

At Sunday's outdoor adoption event in Lincoln Park we finally were able to adopt the right dog thanks to ACL! The volunteer we talked to was extremely patient, answering our questions about the dog, his history, and training. The person in charge made special efforts to accommodate our requests to cat-test the dog and allowed us to spend a lot of time with the dog. With the volunteer, we walked the dog around the area to make sure he was the right match for us based on his energy-level. The adoption process went well, including the call to our landlord. Milo, as we have named our dog, is doing very well and has already met the landlord. We're very grateful to ACL! read more

For years, I gave money to the Oak Park Animal Care League. One day, I adopted a kitty. I went to the Oak Park Animal Care League to set up an appointment to have the kitty neutered. They threw me out. Not only did they not want to help me, they wanted me to travel over a hundred miles downstate to have the procedure done. I wasn't asking for a freebie either. - This place is nothing but a gathering center for lost souls and bored housewives. There are hundreds of Humane Shelters that are more deserving of your money and they do a much better job loving animals. This place won't get another dollar from me. And to the bad luck of the Oak Park Animal Care League, I am not silent of my opinion of them and I always look forward to telling the public about their hypocrisy. read more
