Our cat had an emergency on Thanksgiving and the ER vet was too expensive. We called around the next morning and River Forest Animal Hospital answered our call and needs. They were able to get us in, help us at a reasonable price and are so friendly and communicative. Our usual vet is a little far and RFAH is close so we are probably going to be using them from now on for all our pets! Could not be happier of more appreciative to them all for their help and understanding. read more

We switched to this vet after trying 2 others in the area. They are excellent - high quality care and caring Drs and techs. My older guy had major heart surgery and has limitations on meds/activities and they coordinate with his cardiologist. We use their care plan for my younger dog and it keeps his regular care very reasonable. We are generally able to get in quickly and they are very responsive if you call with a question. There were a couple complications with the wound healing, but the hospital took care of us every time and went above and beyond to be sure they fit in visits with our personal schedule and that our dog was well taken care of. If your dog is sick and you a prescription is provided and you need a follow-up visit, you'll have to pay twice! Additionally, Dr. Nass has the ABSOLUTE worst bedside manner ever. She was about 25 minutes late into the room because of an emergency, but came in like I did something wrong. No apology, just attitude. When I called to get my dog's records, the "Practice Manager" wanted to speak with me, yet all he did was make excuses. Never again. Dr. Juhnke, Dr. Thomas, Dr. Kuehn, and Dr. Lou all provide outstanding care for Mickey. Especially in the last year of her life when she faced a number of challenges, we could not have asked for a better team. While Dr. J. was the doctor she saw the most, we never had any reservations about having her see anyone else. When asked for opinions and thoughts on pursuing various courses of treatment, we were always provided direct console which was given with sensitivity and compassion. Additionally, I simply cannot say enough good things about the staff. All members of the practice with whom our family interacted were nothing but knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. The front desk is efficient, and they do an amazing job of checking patients in and out simultaneously. I cannot emphasize enough how much I appreciate the efficiency of the front desk. Our 13 year old cat is not a fan of human and can be very difficult to deal with, as she is not at all friendly. Despite all of our cat's quirkiness, Dr. Kuehn and her staff at the River Forest Hospital have always been gracious in taking care of our feline daughter each time we visit. We appreciate that Dr. Kuehn always takes her time to explain to us the course of treatment and what we can do at home to ensure our cat's optimal health. Above all, what we are most appreciative for, is the nice follow up inquiry we get from River Forest Animal Hospital to check in on our furry monster post visit to make sure she is doing ok. For these reasons, I do not quite get what one commentator said about Dr. Kuehn and her staff. Our past experience runs counter to what he said, as we always received excellent care for our cat - even when she tried to scratch them during consultation. I have waited to post a review for something that happened in February at River Forest Animal Hospital. I didn't want to respond just out of anger.But even though I have waited my anger has not dissipated. I brought my 4 year old miniature dachshund Oliver in for his annual teeth cleaning, his third in 4 years at this facility. They have a lengthy consent form that mentions the possibility of extractions but doesn't mention the fact that you will not be contacted prior to it being done. This never overly concerned me because Oliver is only 4 and I never anticipated that happening at such a young age. Well it did happen, and I was notified after the fact by Dr. Adam Thomas. He said a tooth had been removed, neglecting to tell me it was a canine. When I came in to pick up Oliver he looked terrible, his beard all matted with little or no attempt to clean him up. It was the technician that told me which tooth it was and she was surprised it was removed. She said it didn't look that bad. Her statement coupled with the fact that I wasn't notified first so I could have taken Oliver to a doggy dentist for a second opinion as it wasn't life threatening prompted me to send a text which was forwarded to the General Manager. This in turn was sent to Dr.Thomas who sent me a message. In it he stated that he makes the decisions not the owner of the pet, even if they don't agree. That I implied that they were just trying to make more money by extracting Oliver's tooth. This after I have spent over $2000 having Oliver's teeth cleaned there. He also claimed the tooth was extracted with ease because it was so damaged. I play with Oliver everyday in a variety of ways, tug of war being one of them. He never exhibited any pain or discomfort. I used doggy toothpaste on a cloth to try and clean his teeth. That tooth didn't look diseased or was it loose. I forwarded his response to the General Manager and she said she would speak to him about his response, his behavior, and changing some of the procedures at the hospital. I thank her for that. Sorry, it took me a long time to get to the point but it's much more than just about Oliver's tooth. It's also Dr.Thomas cavalier, and dismissive attitude. Also this picture was included in Oliver's paperwork. Before and after, before tooth, after no tooth. Why would I want a constant reminder of that? Makes no sense to me read more

Very poor communication with front desk, I made an appointment for a bath for my dog and was advised his shot were all up to date. A half an hour after dropping my dog off, the tech called me and advised my dog needed additional shots for "boarding " as well as a fee to check his vitals. More than I planned to pay for a bath. Horrible experience! I took my dog for teeth cleaning. I had a couple of doctors checked on her and did blood work prior to the cleaning. All said she was perfectly healthy. But on that day, she stoped breathing during the procedure. She was given anesthesia in the beginning of the procedure but died during the procedure. To this day I still have a hard time to believe how a normal, simple teeth cleaning can go wrong and causing her death! My dog was so full of energy when I took her to the hospital but a few hours later she was lifeless when she was carried out to me. I was devastated! I believe she was given too much anesthesia and mistreatment. But, the doctor never admit he was doing anything wrong. This is so unbelievable. I regret that I had trusted them. My husband and I moved to this area four years ago. I wanted to make sure that I found an exceptional vet just like the one I had back in the city. We chose River Forest because of it's proximity to the house and the reviews that I read at the time. I would say the last few years have been good, though I think some of the Dr.'s could have better bedside manner. Still that didn't shy us away as I thought again we have had no major issues until about a month ago. It has taken me some time to write this review because I am still shocked and disbelief of what happened. Lexi our dog went in for a routine dental surgery. The thought of her going under already was a big concern of ours but we trusted River Forest Animal hospital to take good care of her. When we picked her up we expected she would be woozy . She was really whining which the technician said that is normal and is an after effect from the anesthesia. We took her home and the whining progressed and even got louder. We felt so bad for her and felt so helpless. We called River Forest and they suggested a stronger pain medication. They said they were closing soon so my husband rushed over there right away. I would think if someone just spent over $800 of service you wouldn't try and rush that person. A better response would've been we will wait for you. We ended up giving Lexi the medication but she was still whining. We were really concerned and didn't know what to do. So we just kept a close eye on her. Then that's when I noticed on her belly a bloody mark. I called River Forest right away and they said to drop her off so they could examine her. We got a call from Dr. Thomas later that afternoon and that is when he had told me that it is a burn from the heated blanket that they used during surgery. The news was shocking enough but for him to say that none of the technicians are owning up to it concerned me more. How is a professional office not know what each person working there supposed to be doing? There needs to be accountability. If there is an issue one should be be able to address that specific person who was assigned to that job. While Dr. Thomas was very forthcoming with what happened and explained that the technicians have been reprimanded it is all too late. This should have never happened. It is almost a month ago and Lexi is still healing. This wasn't a small tiny burn. For anyone considering this place please proceed with caution. They need to have better training and procedure and not be so worried about just getting out of there on time. Needless to say we are now in search of a new veterinarian hospital. read more

We went here for a number of years. Dr. Thomas is both great with pets and explaining everything to pet-owners; all of the staff are knowledgeable and kind. I would recommend coming here especially if you have multiple animals. A few people said in the comments that it is expensive; I don't doubt it. I think it probably is a bit more expensive than other suburbs--but you're also getting a quality of care, and I think it's best to invest in pets to keep them healthy--then skimp on their care and have major issues in the future. My one issue was the last time we were there, it took a long time--we waited in the room after the nurse had been with us and before the actual doctor came in for 30 minutes. Just sitting in a "scary room" for 30 minutes stressed my pet out. I am not sure 30 minutes of nothingness before the doctor comes is really necessary--especially given that we had an appointment. Furthermore, no one came in to give us any updates or details--I honestly thought that they forgot that we were there. However, I will hope that this was an anomaly--maybe there was a super ill or urgent pet who needed care--but it was excessive especially because we had an appointment. --In total we ended up being there for over an hour--for just one routine vaccination. Maybe bring some entertainment in case you get stuck waiting. It is a very convenient location with plenty of parking--which can otherwise be hard in Oak Park--so even if you live in OP, I do recommend coming here. Overall, Dr. Thomas is great--he is very calming for animals; the staff is very good about getting you and your pet in if you ever have an emergency. Even if it is expensive, you can rest easy knowing your cat or dog received comprehensive care. 5 stars. read more

For a few years, I've been saying that I would find a vet closer to my house. When it came down to it, when something serious was going on with my pets, I wanted to take them somewhere familiar that I trusted. Aging pets break your heart. I never would've guessed that I would lose both of my cats within 6 months of each other. My older cat, Riley, had gone to RFAH since she was a baby (~18y). My other cat, Frank, adopted as an adult went there for 8. Frank was abused when I got him and afraid of everything for years; RFAH was patient when I would schedule and reschedule appointments because Frank wouldn't cooperate and get in the carrier. Over the last year plus, I've worked almost exclusively with Dr. Menghini, although Dr. Thomas has been quite wonderful too. Dr. Menghini understood that I didn't want to take aggressive measures with either animal due to Riley's advanced age and Frank's grim diagnosis (intestinal cancer and kidney failure). Both cats were on a host of medications, fluids and supplements; the office totally understood me shopping for the best deal and quickly responded to any requests for prescriptions. I was fortunate that Riley was able to stay home in her final weeks, but Frank didn't fare as well. Around the time Riley died, we discovered not only that Frank had gone deaf, but that he had kidney failure and cancer. While Frank didn't act sick until the very end, we had trouble keeping his various levels in safe ranges; this required a number of vet trips, emails, phone consults and med changes. In the end, the last straw was an abscessed tooth. Dr. Thomas recommended a non-invasive approach due to his condition. Unfortunately, Frank didn't respond to the treatment for long and they had to put him under. Given his fragile state and that I was in the midst of a move, we agreed it was best to keep him at RFAH for a few days after the procedure and during my move. He did well at first, but Dr. Menghini let me know he was failing the following day. They were doing everything they could to help him heal, but his body was shutting down. I didn't make it out in time for Frank; I was stuck at home while movers loaded and unloaded my stuff. What made not being there for him hurt a little less was knowing the Dr. Menghini was. Everyone on staff was so kind when I came in to say goodbye and collect Frank's things. RFAH has been with me for the ups and downs over the years. Veterinary care isn't cheap, but I've been extremely happy with the patience, care, and kindness they've shown me and my animals over the years. Especially when my cats were being temperamental. If you want a place that will treat your pets right, this is it. read more

Appointments are not respected. Front desk is not organized. They set you up for an appointment and then don't respect their own schedule. Had a 10:30 am appointment for my cat, on a working day. Got there 2 minutes prior to our scheduled appointment. Informed the front desk of our arrival. Was asked to wait. Waited for 15 minutes. They forgot about us. Then another front desk asked if we had checked in? Then they made us wait for another 15 minutes. Intermittently telling us with apologetic faces and tones that the room is being cleaned.... For 30 minutes!!?? Smelled of dishonesty to me. In the meantime, took 4 other people, including a walk-in with no appointment! I am a professional who needs a vet who respects their own scheduling and appointments and are honest about their mistakes with scheduling or double booking. My 12-year old Domestic Shorthair cat, Marbles, has been a patient here with both Dr Juhnke and Dr Kuehn since kitten-hood. From routine exams, to teeth cleaning, and on to a rear leg amputation earlier this year, these excellent doctors, and their amazing support team, have been an integral part of our life and care of Marbles. I am incredibly grateful to live in close proximity of such warm, caring, and insightful professionals. Both Dr Kuehn and Dr Juhnke have gone out of their way, on days off, weekends, evenings, to check in on Marbles, to provide care, and to support me as my cat's guardian. Lisa Atansio has also cared for Marbles, both at the hospital and at our home. This is an excellent facility, with comprehensive care, and with some of the finest veterinary staff you can ever find. We came to River Forest Animal Hospital about 5 years ago with our beloved ill Beagle. Dr Thomas did the best he could but it was already too late. He helped us decide what to do and with such caring about our dog and that she should be euthanized. We then got a beautiful little dog called Baby. He has spayed , and taken care of all the shots , and operated on her for bladder stones. We trust Dr Thomas and will follow him to Timbuktu! He is THE kindest,wonderfully helpful Vet. This review is not reflecting the doctors but poorly managed front desk. Several times I had issues with front desk staff. Simply not attentive and no sense of urgency. I asked for someone to fit me in to see my dog as he had serious issues. I called the first thing in the morning. I was told "sorry, go to the emergency hospital in Chicago". I asked please he really needs help. I was told "no I'm sorry." Later in the morning they call me back and say "there has been cancellation at 1pm would you want to take it" Of course I accept it as I was still calling around trying to find a doctor to help him. he was seen by Dr. Lou (I believe that's how you spell it! she was detailed in his exam and determined that his gull bladder might burst. Have him some antibiotics and nausea med. She also made other recommendation. I was thankful because she actually was the only one out of 4 doctors to diagnose him properly. Doctor also informed me that she certainly could have seen him earlier. With all sadness, my dog passed away this same night. Train your staff. There was no empathy , professionalism or sense of urgency. Please understand, there were multiple instances of the same behavior. Thank you Dr. Lou for recommending The hospital in Chicago. This place was fantastic. My puppy loved them and they treated us well. It turned out she had a rash from allergies and the doctor offered multiple options for treatment (including an OTC allergy medicine I could get from any drugstore). I opted for the prescribed meds bc I wanted the rash to heal quickly and felt bad about my pups being uncomfortable. For the medication, exam, nail trimming, heartworm, plus flea & tick meds, I expected the bill to be astronomical - but it was very reasonable. Part-time vets make it difficult to get consistent care for my cat. Felt like going to mechanic with car. Based on the problems I told vet my cat was experiencing, she told me she would be back with estimate. Really didn't zero in on the differential diagnosis. Conflicting information depending on which vet was there that day. Charges appeared excessive for the level of care provided compared to other vets. I have brought my cat here for several years, but feel I need a new vet. Didn't switch because they have my cat's history since he was a kitten. In my opinion this place has horrible communication and organization than the usual pet veteran facility. I recommend trying a different facility if you want your time respected and your pet to receive proper care. My first visit I had to wait 10 minutes after a scheduled appointment May 5, 2023. I was asked a series of questions that was filled out on online. I assume they were looking for confirmation which is fine. After my dog received 3 vaccines, one oral and two shots, I was told one of the vaccines has a second part my dog will need to take a month from now. Then was told I will pay for all the vaccines at the front desk and I did not have to schedule an appointment and could just walk in. I still scheduled an appointment to make the process faster than my first visit. I made an online appointment like before for June 10, 2023 @ 10:30 am. I also got an email June 5th asking to confirm this date and I did. I received a call around 9:00 am on Jun 10th that this facility has ran out of the Influenza bivalent vaccine and they will call me to let me know there is more. As I expected no one reached out and I left a voicemail saying I was told I could walk in and they would reach out to let me know when there was more of that vaccine. An appointment for July 8, 2023 was made after an older woman rudely scheduled my next visit and ignore majority of my questions and only said I would have to make an appointment. I get there today and check in with my wife and I had to constantly repeat every word to the front desk. They take my dog in the back and there is no mentioned of paying any vaccine. When my dog comes back now I have to pay for the vaccines and now it was not included in the first payment. Again communication and organization goes along way and this facility does not have it in my opinion. read more

I had noticed a lump that turned up on my dog's side that wasn't going away, and it would often change in size. He needed to get some vaccine boosters anyway, so I took him in and asked about the lump. They did a test on it and turns out, yep, it was cancerous (mast cell tumor). We scheduled surgery, and Dr. Kuehn went through absolutely everything with me and eased my worries about the procedure. My pup came through great, and the surgeon (Who I did not get to meet - her name was Dr. Lu I believe? Only spoke with her by phone a few times) kept me updated throughout the day of surgery to let me know where they were in the surgery and how my dog was doing. As they promised, a week after surgery, they called me with histopathology results and let me know that the tumor was low-grade and they got ALL of it. So thankful to Dr. Kuehn and the surgeon for saving my dog! Plus, out of all of it, we learned that he really loves wearing shirts (was recommended he wear while healing so as not to scratch at the stitches) which is a source of endless enjoyment (see photo). I'm not sure where to even begin with the positive comments. I moved to Oak Park in July 2012 and started taking my then 14 year old Labrador to River Forest. I saw Dr. Caroline Menghini on my initial visit and she was great. I'd spent a lot of money on my old guy down in the city. Thousands of dollars to figure out what's wrong with a 15 year old dog (I know a total waste). But she immediately understood my situation. And did not push for chemo / ultra sounds, etc with a full understanding of the situation. She started him on an anti-biotic to help with some urinary problems and I left there feeling really good. Later that evening (time stamp of her email was 8:05 p.m. well after hours), she emailed me with some research she had done showing that anti-biotic (ciproflaxin) was found to have anti-cancer properties in lab studies. For that reason, I believe I was able to get another 6 months of quality life for my guy. And when it came time, she reassured me it was time / that he was in a lot of pain and I was given all the time I needed with him on that day. She was very understanding and the entire staff seemed sad / sympathetic to Castor's condition. I won't talk about that too much other than to say I got a hand written sympathy card from Dr. M a few weeks later. So kudos to Dr. M and the entire staff for running a great place that cares about the animals and the owners and goes extra miles for our furry friends. read more

RFAH is a wonderful place for pets. The staff is friendly and helpful. The doctors are very caring and knowledgeable. They really take the time to understand the animal's issue so they can make a thoughtful recommendation. They also have a regular e-newsletter that they send around the holidays to remind you of the foods that are dangerous to cats and dogs ("These Are a Few of the Dangerous Things"). Dr. Thomas was especially gentle and supportive when we had to put our beloved dog to sleep a few years ago. He did everything he could top extend our little one's life. He managed to be respectful and caring of our pain yet honest about the reality of the situation. He even gave us a handwritten card with our dog's ashes. So unexpected! I was so distraught after our loss I thought I'd never be able to go back to RFAH, but a few months later we rescued another dog and I couldn't imagine taking her anywhere else. This is without a doubt the best vet I've ever been to! My dog I'd usually super scared at the vet, but he loved both the place and the people. The doc presented all of the treatment options for my dog's heart murmur (along with the costs) and then told me his recommendations. My dog also needed vaccinations. He discussed each with me and we decided (together) which one's would really be of benefit. As long as I live in Oak Park, I will be a loyal customer!
