My dog was recently diagnosed with Diabetes and Dr. Ferguson was so patient with my long list of questions and concerns. This review is long overdue actually as I've been taking my dogs to him for several years now and every time I see him, I'm blown away by his knowledge and ability to explain things in a way that is easy to understand. I never feel judged or coerced like at other places. It's one of the few vet offices that's not owned by a big corporation. He doesn't nickel and dime you nor recommend anything unneeded. We have been taking our cats, as kittens and adults to Animal Medical for about ten years now, and all I can say is Dr. Ferguson would make an excellent human doctor and I would trust him even with my own life. That is saying something as I, myself, am a human medical professional. He is gentle and genuinely cares for the pets, gives good advice in an almost off-hand manner, and refers to other practices if treatment would surpass the capacity of his own. His practice is limited, so don't expect a fancy ER or ICU for pets, but he does an amazing job diagnosing and understanding small animals. And the psychology of their owners, as well. That's another issue. He is straight foreward, thorough and knowledgeable and he has little interest in expensive add-ons or padding the bill. His charges are reasonable, especially considering the bills one finds at local 'animal hospitals' which border on human-scale expensive. I have also had him 'put down' a pet who was beyond hope and he is sensitive and responsive to such grim occasions. I can think of nothing unkind to say. read more

Unfortunately, my dog did not like Dr. Fergusen. My daughter and I had to hold down our doggo just so she could receive her mandatory shots. She was NOT happy. The Dr. tried to give her a physical exam, but to no avail....my doggo wouldn't let him come near her again after the shots. Oh well.. at least we were able to get her anxiety meds for traveling. After 18 years of Dr. F being our vet he has refused to help us with our dog's condition. While our dog's current condition is a difficult one we have a course of action and we're simply asking for occasional bloodwork and med management. After emails which were not answered the receptionist calls to say don't come anymore. This doctor cared for our other dog too prior to this one. Do not go here if your pets need anything more than a quick check up and vaccinations they will not help you. After stressing over needing to find a new vet that didn't overcharge we thankfully did. read more

Love this practice and have been coming here & roping in family and friends for 15 or 20 years. The published accolades and awards are well-earned. Dr. Ferguson has never once tried to "upcharge" with tests that won't change the course of treatment (although he can do what needs to get done!). Even better -- he knows animals so well (not just generally speaking, but seems to also be able to read their personalities immediately upon meeting them). Within recent years the overall care received from local vets/animal hospitals has drastically declined and this is no different for Animal Medical. "Caring for your pet just as your family doctor looks after your family" is Animal Medical's moto. I would say, from the piss-poor care I've personally received from doctors, that I'd agree this to be a true and fair statement regarding the care your pets will receive at Animal Medical. Animal Medical came recommended to us from another family member who had received care for her small breed dogs. Prior to getting our puppies, my mother took her Bichon Frise mix to them who ultimately had to be put on insulin. He passed away shortly after receiving care at Animal Medical. We believe he was not properly cared for and even possibly given the wrong amount of insulin as his health declined rapidly after seeing Dr. Ferguson. From the moment we took our 6-week-old American Staffordshire Terriers (Pitbull) puppies into see Dr. Ferguson I had a bad feeling as the first words out of his mouth were "did you guys see the parents? Were they aggressive? If the parents were aggressive, the pups are going to be too!" Words that SCREAMED he had a preconceived bias against pitbulls and something I doubt would have been thought of let alone said with many other breeds that he sees daily. He was extremely rough with the puppies when he was examining them, even picking them up and rubbing their fur back and forth (harder than he needed to in my opinion) to check for any flea dander. It seems as though they also pride themselves on "no sales tactics" and "no commissions" and not making people feel "guilty" with "unnecessary things to do" which is true, but the problem is, they don't even tell you about or offer other things that could give your pet a better quality of life. It is as if they determine, by the way you look, if you can afford it or not and then they act accordingly. Not once allowing you to make the decision for yourself or your pet. "We inform, you choose" may be on their website but not what they practice. Fast forward to our most recent visit. We noticed one of the dogs limping and on further inspection we noticed that her nail was cracked below the quick and occasionally bleeding. In an effort to prevent further and possibly worse damage, we called Animal Medical to receive care. Due to the pandemic, we were limited on where we could take her as many places are not accepting new patients, otherwise he would have never received our business again as we were greeted with the same biased response as we had been met with during our very first visit. Upon entering the exam room, our dog was startled (she hasn't been to the vet since she was a puppy nor around much due to the pandemic) and began to bark to which Dr. Ferguson jumped back in obvious fear then proceeded to ask if she had bit anyone before. Again, I wonder, would this have been asked to a Chihuahua owner? I doubt it! He then took her into the back where we heard an obvious struggle as he trimmed her nails. Charging $90 to trim her nails and give antibiotics seemed a bit excessive to me but whatever (maybe just another way to get us not to return with the pups he has such a bias against). He never actual tended to the broken nail that we came in there for that I had to trim a few days later as she snagged it and made it worse (what we were trying to prevent). On top of being able to visibly tell that he didn't like her, he told us our two-year-old pup (just turned two 5/25/2021) was too old for him to fix. WHAT?! I have never heard of such a thing but again, I feel like it is just another tactic to get us to never come back. Well sir, you've succeeded, we will NEVER be back. I would not recommend this veterinarian to anyone that cares about their pets. You are just another number, another dollar sign, and he will do whatever he can to make you believe otherwise. If he has a stigma against large breeds or is scared of them, he should have picked a different profession. read more

I love this place, I had taken my dogs to banfield for years because of the convenience, but was tired of the cost and all the extra meds they wanted my dog to take. I decided if I wouldn't take extra medicine, why would I have my dog do so. Dr. Ferguson is great even with the anti-social dog I was babysitting and had to take in. After my little dog was attacked by large loose dogs, he reassured me that I did what I could have and treated my dog conservatively yet more than adequately. Highly recommend. I appreciate Dr. Ferguson's no bs work ethics which is focused on the patient being able to afford veterinarian care to help their pet, rather than being sold on this and that, like a used cars salesman. Basically he is how it used to be before medicine became based on selling pharmaceuticals, and special diet food. I moved from Arizona about a year and a half ago. I would drive down to Beaverton just to see my vet because I really trusted her and the clinic down there. However, it is a far drive for a quick check-up, so I decided to try and find a vet up here. After a few interviews of some vets, reviewing others experiences of vets, I decided to give Animal Medical a visit. Dr. Ferguson was phenomenal. Very few vets have I met that knew how to interact with a sensitive dog. Dr. Ferguson understood the behavior, and understood what movements would make it worse and what actions. Usually, I have to console the vet staff before they interact with my dog and explain how they should interact with my dog prior to interacting with her. I did not have to do that with Dr. Ferguson or Beth. I cannot praise this clinic enough, I will absolutely be back. read more

Dr. Ferguson is helpful, understanding, and doesn't run every test under the sun. He is NOT one of those vet offices that does unnecessary treatments and tests. He goes above and beyond during the examination and takes the time to answer any questions that you have (and believe me, I usually have a list). It is extremely hard to find a good vet that you trust and can provide you the answers that you need. I have been to multiple vets, but he is the first that I can say I honestly trust. I'm so glad we found him and will continue to use him in the future. I cannot recommend him enough. Here is a more detailed account of a recent experience: Dr. Ferguson originally diagnosed two of our dogs (at different times this year) as having a mast cell tumor. He was very helpful and informative regarding our treatment options. We decided to go with him versus a specialist partly due to cost, but mostly because we trust him. He was very understanding and gave us all of the information we needed to make the best decision for us. We were able to get the surgeries scheduled quickly. The surgeries were affordable compared to what a specialist would cost and everything went well. The tumors came back as low grade with clean lines. I also asked him his opinion regarding my mother's 13 year old corgi (family dog growing up) in California that hasn't been doing well and has been at the vet on fluids for the last 3 days. He provided me some very good advice that I will pass on to my family. read more

I've been taking my pets to Dr. Ferguson since 1994, and would never consider using another provider. The staff is amazing, always friendly, and can always get my dog in, even at the last minute. Even during the 10 years I lived in Portland I would drive over to him instead of taking my dog to someone closer and risking not finding a good one. A LIVING NIGHTMARE I brought my moms little black Persian cat pepper who we loved dearly. some people love their pets more than others. for a mouth problem he was losing weight and not eating and grinding on the side of his mouth. he was wiry and didn t like to be handled but liked to be pet and was very sweet not aggressive. and he always hated having his temperature taken and it was always very difficult or impossible so this time they said they gave him a nickname I was kind of offended a little and didn t think it was very nice or professional they called him sassy. then the dr. grabbed him on his back and squeezed 3 or 4 times real hard so he would howl and scream to open his mouth to look inside. I was very disappointed and appalled. and he did it with a smile on his face. I put him back in his box and he was hissing from being hurt and mishandled so terribly. he had only hissed several times in his whole life and when I reached down to pet him to calm him down I was afraid he might scratch me but he didn t he just hissed some more. I was sent home with liquid anti biotics to put in his mouth but no one told me to shake the bottle. I didn t find out until it was almost gone. the receptionist called right after I got home but not again to see how he was. he was getting worse but my mom and I didn t want to take him back there because of the way he was treated we both thought that was abusive. animal abuse not the way you want or expect your pet to be taken care of. I think the dr. thought he might be bit because of the way he squirmed taking his temperature but his regular dr. in Gresham simply peeled his lips back with his fingers and he hardly moved or didn t move at all. then I couldn't t get him to his vet soon enough and he was just a skeleton by that time. he went from something being wrong to having to be put to sleep in 12 days very unexpected because I didn t want to go back there and then my car was in the shop. I didn t know the Banfield pet hospital was 2 blocks away I could have walked. now I can never be happy again with the pain and guilt and self blame I just wanted to die I couldn't t live with myself not realizing the mistakes and all the things I should have done different and loved him better because now I ll never see him again he is gone forever I feel so bad and we all got cheated out of years he had left to live. iv e had the worst luck with dr.s and vets. now that he s gone when I wake up it s like a living nightmare. read more

I brought my two dogs into the office today for a check up and some vaccines. One of my dogs is from the humane society and has a history of mange and skin allergies, so he is missing hair on some parts of his body and he has dandruff issues as well. Anyway, I had a million questions because I wanted to make sure everything was okay and see what my options were to help with his skin issues. The front office staff were wonderful, the waiting room was clean, but my favorite part was our veterinarian. He was extremely knowledgable, patient, friendly, loved my dogs, and did not try to push any products on me whatsoever. He gave me information on different products, gave me his honest opinion, and then let me decide. He was very open and honest and had answers to all of my questions. He definitely helped to lower my anxiety because I was also switching veterinary clinics due to distance and that worried me since I had been at my previous vet for over 7 years.
