Beware, these people will nickel and dime you to death and they have no shame about it. They know you're a captive audience because you can't get your animal unless you pay whatever they feel like charging you. I think this late pickup thing, which I will describe below, is a scam that they do on purpose. They told me to pick up my cat at 3:15. I arrived at 3:18, and they charged me $33 for being two minutes late! Apparently "the technician had to stay late," yeah right! They even tried to say that I was supposed to pick her up at 3 and when I showed them the email THEY SENT ME that said 3:15, they still charged me the $33. And not only that, they were incredibly rude and disrespectful to me for no reason. This place is such a rip off. I wish I'd never come here. Oh, and then they made me wait in the (boiling hot) front hallway to get my cat for another 25 minutes! I finally had to ask somebody else at the front desk what was going on. But I'm sure the poor technician must have had to be paid even more for that time, right? And I won't even go into all of the other things that they wasted my time and money with. But I will warn you, if they say that you need a plastic carrier to get your cat spayed, you don't. Half of the people there had fabric ones and when I mentioned it to one of the workers they had no idea what I was talking about. So thanks also for making me buy another cat carrier that I didn't need! That said, the person that actually did the vet work on my cat was very kind and knowledgeable and obviously cares about the animals. Too bad this place is a nightmare otherwise. read more

The Columbia Greene Humane Society did not let me adopt a dog because my mom's address did not have me listed as a resident there which is news to me since that's where I live and receive all of my mail. They were very rude to me over the phone when I tried to explain my living situation. However apparently according to them I don't have a place of residency, and we don't own our home. They do not value the dogs finding a forever home like they claim. When I had the meet and greet with the dog, I picked out which was a Siberian Husky Mix, I even told them that I already went shopping for the dog's necessities. Their staff also is unprofessional and has poor response time as I waited a week to hear back from a staff member after I had already been there and contacted them on various occasions regarding my application in which I had to leave a voicemail even during their regular business hours. read more

I adopted a cat from here about 4 years ago. It was a kitten. had a bad cold when given to me but Doctor Dan got here healthy again. About a month ago I wanted to adopt another kitten but was told my application was out of date. They called everyone on my list, all ok there, but refused adoption because Doctor Dan closed his practice due to health issues and the girl said I am not the owner of my property. (news to me). She obviously made a error but I never heard from them again. I believe the director needs a review of his staff as well as the vetting process which seems to be flawed. For the moment from my perspective the shelter lets inexperienced people research applicants. Looks good on the outside but does not work well on the inside. Last November I went to this facility after seeing some dogs online that I was interested in adopting. According to the website, I had to meet the dogs, tell a staff member which ones I liked, then fill out an application to put a hold on the dogs while my references were checked, and if everything checked out, then the dog (or dogs) would be mine. However, what happened at the shelter was completely different, and very frustrating. I was mostly interested in two older female golden retrievers who had come in together. When I first walked in, I saw one of them about to be walked, so I went up to her, asked her to sit and patted her on the head. I also noticed the other one was still in her kennel. I then went to the desk and told the person that I was interested in the two goldens. This person told me that I couldn't meet them because they weren't temperament tested yet. I was then told to fill out an application, which I did, naming the two golden retrievers at the top of the form as the ones I was interested in. So I gave her the form and said, so the dogs will be put on hold until you check my references? She said, "No, because I haven't met them yet." I told her that I already met one of them, but that apparently didn't matter to her. I asked when they would be tested, and she said she didn't know. I then said that I'd like to meet some other dogs, and she said I couldn't because my references had to be checked. I found this very odd, as well as frustrating and infuriating, especially since this detail was not mentioned on the website. Furthermore, this woman didn't mention any of that when I asked to meet the goldens. The next day I called to find out if the dogs I was interested in had been temperament tested, and I was told that one of them was already spoken for. I told the woman on the phone what I was told yesterday, and as it turns out she's the same person who told me I couldn't meet the dogs. I said that I was planning to take both dogs since they've been together their entire lives. And she said to me, "Well, we're trying to keep them together." Well how the hell are you going to do that if you're separating them? Then she said that she would put me through to her supervisor because she didn't like how I was talking to her. So I asked her how she would talk to someone who gave her the kind of runaround that she gave me? But before I hung up, I asked this woman her name and she told me it was Shelbie. I did leave a message with the director of the shelter who never returned my call. The story, however, isn't over. As it turns out, this person who claimed to be Shelbie is actually Tammy George. I found this out when I did a search of the shelter and came across a photo identifying the person I spoke with as Tammy George, and NOT Shelbie, who is the name of another shelter employee. So not only did she prevent me (and probably others) from adopting animals from your shelter, but she also attempted to put the blame for her actions on one of her coworkers. Nice. I want to conclude by saying that my rating is based on my interaction with this one employee, as well as the fact that despite sending letters with my concerns to both the shelter's director and its adoption manager, I received no response whatsoever. read more

VET HAS ANGER PROBLEMS: I took my cats here for some routine shots because I recently moved and my old vet was too far of a drive. While setting up an appointment, I explained that one of my cats has had a leg amputated as a kitten and is extremely afraid of coming to the vet so she would need to be tranquilized. I was told she'd be getting a tranquilizer and it was no problem. I get to the vets office and the vet tells me there's "no need for a tranquilizer". I then watched as my screaming, crying, terrified 3 legged cat is held onto the floor by her scruff while the vet is yelling "stop it", "get over it", and "what's her problem" while sloppily sticking a needle in her. Not once did the vets check to see if they may have hurt her. It was extremely unprofessional and downright abusive. I hope I never have to come here again. read more

This place is all about money! We found a dead cat at night on the road in Hudson. Since she had obviously been nursing, we went back early the next morning, asked around at the nearby businesses and found the kittens that were about 3 weeks old. The "humane" society said they'd take them, but they'd have to be "euthanized" -- a nicer way of saying they would kill them because they didn't want to actually care for them. Of course we didn't leave them there! They also adopted a kitten to me, and when I went to pick him up, he had a large lump on his head. When I pointed it out to the staff member, she just pushed him into the crate, closed the door, and handed it to me! I don't know what that bump was, but the kitten turned out to have a bad respiratory illness that we nursed him through. A friend of mine adopted a cat whose checklist had everything checked off as fine only to find out when she got it home that it had no teeth! We volunteered to go to a home one night because the "humane" society was too busy (translation: no photo op) to rescue a household full of abandoned animals: exotic birds, two cats and their kittens, one of whom died overnight from the flea infestation, a ferret, a large snake, and a multitude of hamsters. Most of the 27 birds had to go to a rehabilitator, one came home with us, and one had to be euthanized. But the "humane" society couldn't be bothered with any of it. We found other rescues for most of them and re-homed the kitties ourselves. This is not the only horror story I could tell, but I don't want to use several pages just to further exemplify the lack of "humane" in this society. read more

A no frills, affordable option for those that not only want to adopt but also care for their pets. I brought my dog here for his routine vaccinations, and since we've moved a lot, finding a new vet and all the different prices can be intimidating. Being a responsible pet owner should not require a ton of money! And basic care should be affordable for all. $10 vaccinations, $10 monthly flea/tick medication, and a 15min in/out appointment makes taking care of your loved ones a breeze. We scheduled a week in advance (they mentioned they typically do appointments on Friday's), and my boy got everything he needed for the year. We easily added on services when I realized I had forgotten stuff (like testing for heartworm, also just $10) and the staff was all super nice. The vet is a lady who sees dozens of animals each day, so while she seems very serious, she's really just making sure you can get in and out as efficiently as possible. With 3 vaccinations, a lab test, and 2 months of meds, our visit was only $60, which is 1/3 of what we would have paid otherwise. Support this great organization!
