We've worked with Anna on three projects so far spanning over 3 years - Design for living/dining/family rooms. This involved picking furniture, designing custom pieces like window seating, window treatments as well as selecting from retail outlets. - Master bath redesign and master bedroom redesign. Expanded the master bath, created new closet space etc. - Complete upgrade of flooring through out the house - Half bath to full bath conversion - this involved moving our half bath and converting it into a full bath + laundry area redesign. Our experience working with her has been outstanding. What we loved is she listens to what you want and comes up with creative solution that fits your budget. My wife and I have different tastes when it comes to interior decoration. She always presents multiple options within your budget, does not rush you to make a decision. She also applies practicality into her designs, thinks about where we can reuse/incorporate existing things eg furniture, vanity etc. She works with high quality contractors, cabinet makers and they provide fantastic service. We had an issue with one of our blinds almost a year or so after installation and she got it fixed for us without any extra charge. When we moved to California 9 years ago all we could afford was a "fixer upper" home. Since then we've remodeled every room except our office/laundry room (maybe next year) Since I suffer from "option paralysis" when picking things like paint colors, flooring, tile, etc. Anna has been a savior! This review is long overdue. It has been a year. We had great experience working with Anna. After doing a major remodel of the house, there wasn't much budget left for decoration. So we used Anna's half day service. She visited house for consultation. I showed her all existing furniture and furnishings/decorations we had. And we discussed, what we wanted out of the decoration. Since walls had been newly painted, it was a clean start about wall hangings. On the organizing day, she and her partner showed up on time and she told us, we would have a nice house to return to. We liked the result. They left the house clean. She even arranged my cookbooks in the cabinet. Her rate was reasonable. I think it was $625 for half day. I would highly recommend Anna. read more

After we unpacked, she took our furnishings and accessories and created an attractive home in just one day! To completely understand her "magic," one needs to know that it was somewhat of a challenge as mentioned earlier. Moving with two young children and getting a house ready for move in are not easy tasks and when combined together, has the capability of driving you to brink of sanity, so I decided that I would try to save some time and use an interior designer's services. I liked Anna because she is able to work with flexibility (by the hour or chunks of time) and give us a design direction. Her design help was tremendously efficient and she was able to help us work with what we already have, come up with a color palette for the interior, and ideas for layouts. I appreciated her suggestions and advice immensely and felt that it was completely worth the money I spent. It saved me a lot of time and headache, plus it was nice to have a professional give me a sense of direction as I liked having a plan laid out. Anna was also excellent at communicating with me using Houzz, printouts, and drawings. She was able to really give me a good sense of direction for how to put the new house together. With her help many decisions were made quickly and with confidence. Why did I take one star off? Well, I did find her design services so wonderful I decided to also take her up on doing some project management for the interior improvements we needed at the house -- namely painting, new flooring on the bottom floor, a custom cabinet, and stairs and railings. Our expectations were not well aligned on the project management portion of her services with me. I was in a hurry -- we have a month between hiring her and move-in date, I am dealing with two kids 3 and under, trying to vet our preschools and doctors while trying to get our current house ready for sale, and eager to hand off some of the dealing with contractors at the new house. My expectation was that she would have tapped into her roster of contractors as opposed to just contacted one for each item. The world of home contractors is an exercise in consumer intelligence, and I am used to doing it more methodically, (I like to follow FTC and BBB's guidelines for dealing with home contractors). Having previously gotten quotes from contrators myself as a homeowner, I expected to have details in the quotes like labor, materials, hours, etc. Considering a contractor can put a lien on your house, I was not comfortable at all with the nonprofessional and quickie quotes that got passed along. I was completely taken aback by the casualness of the quotes I would receive via Anna. She only met with one contractor to get a bid for each project and they would text her a number or email her a quick quote. The sparse content was also unhelpful in helping us make decisions. Anna's close and familiar relationship with the contractors worked against me in this case. When I let her know how I felt, she mentioned she was working as fast as possible while being busy juggling multiple projects, but it was still not acceptable to us to have such sketchy quotes on top of higher than expected price quotes from contractors. She did then go back to her contractors to get more detailed quote and one did come back with the details that we wanted. I felt that the contractors she used did not offer competitive prices because the request came from her, the designer. I ended up contacting more vendors using Yelp and Angieslist and it turns out her vendors charged $550 (for painting) to $1700 more (for carpeting) than the next highest bid, and much higher than the lowest. Does saving over $2500 on carpeting and painting matter to us? It sure did! Also, Anna did not inform us that if she stopped being "project manager," that custom cabinet work that was already approved to be done would be dropped without notice. Luckily, I had called the cabinet guy to confirm the schedule and it was during that call that I found out that the guy will not work since "Anna is his girl" and that his "license is under Anna." I really wished that Anna would have told me about this, as I found this to be very unprofessional. Anna said that the guy did this on his own, but this is something that I was unaware of might happen with her contractors. I would take a 1/2 star off for this, but I will take Anna's word that she had no knowledge or control over this. So in summary, I would use Anna for design consultation and design consultation only. If you want competitive bids, do your own vendor vetting, and do not use her for project management if you are under a tight deadline and a strict budget. read more

For home owners-- and commercial owners--always go to the California State Contractors License Board: http://www.cslb.ca.gov/ to start checking basics on contractors and contracting. Sad to say, from Irene below, that homeowners particularly get in a hurry, do not check all their sources carefully. While the cabinet guy noted his "license is under Anna", Anna appears to be unlicensed by the Contractors State License Board. Perhaps that's not what the cabinet guy meant by "license" but rather that Anna had control and say in the design as "license". I believe that's what he probably meant. Note that anyone performing construction work or charging for construction work without the appropriate license(s) is operating illegally. Construction is always buyer beware. Sad to say (again) things like this happen all the time. People want to save time and money not realizing nor believing there are regulations to protect consumers. Those regulations cannot protect consumers from themselves, however. Do your research, and then talk to professionals you trust, understanding how they work. read more

Anna get's 5 stars for her role in color coordinating my house. I just got a house in Livermore and wanted to paint it and had NO IDEA what colors. I had some ideas in my head but I was not sure if they would all flow together or not. Anna came out and I went over everything with her as far as my ideas. She was up front in telling me if it would work or not. She had comments and asked me lots of questions to get an idea what I wanted. She had great input and painting tips. We spent one hour and went over each room. Her cost if very fair too. I had several quotes for "color coordinators" ranging from $2,000 on down. We hired Anna to design and furnish our formal area which had been empty for years after our home remodel. Anna has great experience doing lots of homes in the Mission area which made us very comfortable in going with her. Our formal area was little irregular and we wanted a contemporary, clean look but yet a look that was warm and inviting for entertaining. Anna understood perfectly what we wanted and picked some delightful furniture pieces, carpet, lights, wall art and plaques for us. Her design concept was clean and easy to visualize. Anna Jacoby was willing to work by the hour giving me advise about how to work with what I already had. I took notes on her numerous suggestions as we walked from room to room. Her constructive criticism included all sorts of wonderful ideas that I could handle on my own. For example, she pointed out that the mirror above my tall mantlepiece in the living room was reflecting only the ceiling. She suggested that I switch it to the entry hall and use a painting over the fireplace. She thought a yellow wall would cheer up my sterile all white kitchen. And it did! Anna did a fabulous job of decorating my new house. We had planned a party on Saturday and hired Anna just few days ahead of the party. She and her assistant came to my house on Wednesday for the measurement and stuff went shopping on the same day and the following day and by Friday they worked in my house all day long and made my house look like a designer house.
