If you value your loved one's life, do not bring them to Anna Jaques Hospital. My son was in a severe dirt bike accident. He came in with obvious head trauma, bleeding from his head, difficulty breathing, and extreme confusion. Instead of urgent care, we were met with indifference. After 15-20 minutes of him sitting there in crisis, I went to the desk and asked when they were going to admit him. The staff flat-out told me: "There's nothing we can do for him." Let that sink in. A hospital ER telling a parent there's nothing they can do for a critically injured teenager. Only after I called 911 from the waiting room to try to get an ambulance to a real hospital did they finally admit him. Once inside the ER, things only got worse. A nurse was scrubbing his face so roughly he was crying from the pain. My son, who hours earlier had crashed his dirt bike, lifted it off himself, kick-started it, and drove it out of the woods with a dislocated vertebrae, a broken nose, and a lacerated liver, whispered to me through tears: "Please keep her away from me." That's how brutal their "care" was. It then took three hours before they even performed a CT scan. That scan revealed what was obvious from the start: severe injuries and internal bleeding. At that point, the doctors immediately put him on a med flight to Boston because he never should have been left untreated here in the first place. This hospital gambled with my son's life. Their delay and outright negligence could have cost him everything. If you live in this area, don't make the mistake we did--drive straight to Boston. They will wait longer than the protocol, give you a PA not a Doctor to triage you) and then the nurse will call you honey to dismiss you when you say it's serious and need a doctor. They did not even have a cardiologist to call to ER. They said the wait for the cardiologist would be several hours or more. They tried to check me in without having a cardiologist! And when you ask to go to another hospital, they will tell you they cannot send you there because it's always full so send you to the place they want. Happened to me. Even with a heart attack you are better off driving or calling an ambulance and going elsewhere. Not the place for excellent care. Like a bad fever dream. And this is very dangerous if you ARE in distress and having a heat attack do not go to Anna Jacques. Very surprised at the standard of care. Would not recommend to anyone. read more

I went to the emergency room in November 2024 on a Friday afternoon because I was deeply depressed. They told me that I was a Section 12 without explaining what that meant, which is being suicidal. You are stuck in a room and guarded except for being allowed to use the bathroom. I did not find anything out about my health until Monday afternoon even after I repeatedly asked the nurses what the status was. A social worker finally did a virtual interview with me and apologized for dropping the ball... Do not especially expect compassionate mental health care on a weekend. read more

I went toAnna Jaques for labs before a drs. appointment. I explained to the phlebotomist that the veins in my arms have collapsed, and would she please take it from my hand. The first person went to run this past (I guess) a supervisor, who said "I'll be able to find a good vein in your arm" - (I wish I had a dime for every time I've heard that)... She tried, got nothing, and asked the first phlebotomist to take it from my hand. Needless to say, I will not return there for any blood labs!!!! read more

The last three visits to the ER were HELL! I was treated so poorly by all of the rude nurses. I didn't feel like I even belonged there although I ended up having a cholecystectomy at night! I asked about him and I was told that he was fired for "performance " I used to come here a lot and always saw him zipping around solving issues. Nurse told mother in law she'd get her a meal and a drink, 6 hours later still nothing. Missed breakfast, missed lunch. Day doctor left without updating the family, oncoming doctor had attitude. Too busy joking and chatting about non work relayed topics and got pissy when asked to update the family. Defensive when asked about next steps then gas light and asked about hostility...uhh... no hostility, just asking legitimate questions and you are dodging answers. Unfortunately, this seems to be typical when an elderly person is there. How sad. Don't these people realize that if they are lucky enough, one day they too will be the elderly person they so quickly dismiss. read more

Earlier this year, I had some rather significant surgery on my knee. I was experiencing a great deal of pain, reduced range of motion and in general my life was changing downward to accommodate the pain. I was referred to Anna Jacques Physical Therapy Department for post-surgery PT. At first, I was not a strong believer in the benefits of physical therapy. I had no idea what to expect. And I had very skeptical thoughts that I would never regain the abilities I had before my knee was injured. I was very much surprised and pleased by my experience at Anna Jacques Physical Therapy. My PT associate, Melanie, explained to me what was involved, what can be done and then carefully benchmarked my initial strength and range of motion. She tailored the therapies to improve my knee issues. Never pushing too hard, but hard enough that I quickly noticed improvements. She listened attentively to my issues, concerns and goals. My range of motion went from quite limited to full range with no pain at all. I have high praise for Melanie and the excellent staff at Anna Jacques Physical Therapy Department. I highly recommend them should you be in need of such therapies. read more

I came to the ER at 4:00 pm in the middle of my workday with an extremely painful and evolving spreading infection, after my family doctor earlier in the day referred me to several specialists, who had no appointments available. After 2.5 hours in the Anna Jaques ER, I asked a nurse how much longer the wait would be. She seemed annoyed by the question. After three hours, which got me nothing more than filing out forms (mostly about billing) and shuffled between rooms, I asked her again. more annoyance. she suggested I return to my cubical and went back to her emory board. After another wait that took me past three hours in the AJ ER, I put my clothes back on and walked to the desk and asked the same nurse if she could call Lawrence General to ask about the wait time in their ER - my cell phone had died by then. She seemed horribly offended and responded, "They won't tell you so I'm not calling but you're free to leave." i drove home, in a good deal of pain and concern about the spreading infection. I'll go to Lawrence General tomorrow and will re-post here. The AJ ER wasn't even busy. Anna Jaques isn't an inner-city hospital overrun with triage. No shootings and stabbings and acute trauma while I was there. All walk ins who registered themselves. This is a small community hospital out in the woods, but suffering from the profit-driven ownership of the big health care conglomerates with an FU ownership ("you don't like it, try Lawrence General down 495, but we're not calling for you"), in this case Beth Israel Lahey blah blah blah. Beth Israel Lahey and AJ are why Americans hate their corporate health care providers. Another review here says the hospital is understaffed. There were plenty of people in blue and white smocks running around the halls looking official with their AJ credentials flying on their nametags but effectively just hustling to their bathroom and lunch breaks and emory boards. None was available to me for three-plus hours, except to collect billing info. Press one for English. Two for billing. Three for FU. Four to return to the menu. Five to be disconnected. Tomorrow I'll call my insurer to ask that they reject AJ/beth Israel Leahy blah blah blah charges. AJ gets to bill for service, not for asking me to press one or two or three or four or five. But tonight, I'm at home sleepless in pain with a spreading infection bc my insurer (bc/bs of mass) couldn't help me (no appointments with approved specialists available) my doctor couldn't help (he couldn't handle it and could provide no specialists who were available) the staff at my "local community hospital" (sounds so pleasant) were all on their emory boards. Go elsewhere, even in an emergency. Otherwise you'll get a "nurse" (no doctor) with an emory board back at her desk who can't be bothered. Also keep in mind that BCBS has a very limited network of providers, which is why I ended up in an ER like this. read more

I wish I could give 0 stars. I am in the emergency room at Anna Jacques hospital with my mom again. The nurse that is taking care of her is the rudest person I have ever met. It is so bad my 80 yr old mom wants to leave. I ask a simple question and she nearly jumped down my throat. No only that we could not understand any thing she says. She actually said "are you going to hit me" Are you kidding me. I wish we had a hospital that actually helps patients instead of releasing them without helping. I was hospitalized with a movement disorder but placed in behavioral Health. The team patronized and disparaged me, saying that I invented the disorder. A few weeks after discharge, I saw an MGH neurologist. He immediately identified the pain disorder and provided medication (non-opioid). After a few months of recovery, I returned to work. No one should go through this. The entire provider group approached their work with bitter and anger, missing diagnoses and damaging patient lives. read more

this is the most incompetent emergency. I came with multiple stab wounds in my hand 2 days ago bleeding profusely. blood was dripping on the waiting rm floor, after 2 hrs a 20 yr. old called me. to an admin office asked me list of irrelevant questions whle i was n agony sent me back to waiting rm for 3 hrs af which pt I had fainted. someone told my husband I would see a pa. disgusted. we left called my GP who ordered antibiotic. because of Anna Jaques treatment I have o have reconstructive hand surgery. lac k of judgment. awful read more

Unfortunately, the names I had written down to mention were lost in the shuffle of transfer to rehab, then home. I believe all the rooms are private, they are tight with equipment and such but thats to be expected. They were kept clean and as neat as they could be. My sis even liked the food!! read more

do not go! !!!!!!!!! instead go to seabrook ER 10 minutes away. this is the second time i've been to the ER at Anna Jacques and had an absolutely horrendous experience. i arrived with severe abdominal pain and nausea, and i waited in the waiting area for 2.5 hours to be seen. after 2.5 hours, i was taken to a bed in a hallway with no further communication. i asked the front desk if they knew about wait times and/or if they advised i should go somewhere else, and they were incredibly rude citing that "they can't give me medical advice." finally I decided to uber to the ER in Seabrook. on my way out i passed by about 7 personnel sitting around and laughing/chatting loudly . the level of care is atrocious. I understand that hospitals are unpredictable but the staff behavior and communication made for a horrible experience. i took an uber 10 minutes to seabrook and was in a room being seen within 5 minutes. read more

They are understaffed, not enough help for nurses to move or take care of patients properly. while visiting my mother in ICU the nurse asked me to help move her and once she was left in her own pee for an hr and a half. some nurses are rude and will just sit at the station while alarms are going off in the room. read more

Women's Healthcare out of Haverhill / Newburyport was my OBGYN while I stayed at Anna Jacques for the birth of my 2nd baby on 9/6/18 and the nurses / midwives at Anna Jacques were really top notch. Erica was my labor nurse and I think about her all the time because she was just so supportive and cheered me on through it all. I had a really, really rough birth experience this second time around but postpartum care by her and Meredith were amazing - I have zero complaints and only praise for those nurse-angels. Poor attitude from director of the telemetry...appalling!!! Also, the hospitals visiting time frame (Noon to 8) is ridiculous. NO THAT HAS NOT ALWAYS BEEN WHAT IT IS. I grew up in that hospital and was working EMS there since 2005...DONT LIE!!! Every other hospital has normal hours. Your hospital also lost its level 3 trauma center status. Beautiful inside one thing I would suggest is to have more emergency room parking rather than park out of the 8 spots on the street or the 12 leading up to the emergency room building. I had a very good experience in the Orthopedic/ Radiology Department. Staff and doctor were amazing Excellent care. The hospital itself is antiquated and the administration people seemed a bit discombobulated. Being used to BI Boston, AJ needs a facelift in the radiology department. It's small and old and uncomfortable. I feel strongly AJ has to live up to the communities needs. read more

I went to Anna Jaques in Newburyport for an xray as I am experiencing severe back pain as this was ordered by my PCP. I was admitted quickly enough and after the series of xrays I asked the tech if that was it??? I thought based on my discussion with the PCP that they would need to look at pictures from a certain angle which she did not do. No she said it was fine and I could leave. On my way back home I get a phone call from the tech who said she didn't read half the orders... so I turn back around go back and when there where she and her colleague joke about the mix up. Remember I was in excrutiating pain and am still now. The incompetence and lack of professionalism in this hospital make me want to puke. I will never return. read more

Unfortunately I had an emergency needing an ambulance ride & this hospital ended up being the closest to where I live. From the time I was brought in to the point where I was discharged, each staff member I encountered was wonderful. The room they put me in was spotless. Each staff member sanitized their hands, wore a mask and was very pleasant to deal with. I have absolutely no complaints. I was treated with respect which at my age can be iffy ... Ill admit that I was quite nervous - especially after reading the reviews here! The team went into action & got me out of my problem as quickly as possible. Once I was better I was given the option of staying a bit longer if I felt I needed to. They left it up to me. The fact that I'd arrived by ambulance I needed transportation home. One of the nurses helped me out securing a ride...so helpful. I'm very grateful to everyone there for excellent care I got!!! read more

I went to the ER last night, 3/22/23. I was at home and all of a sudden, I started sneezing like crazy. Then my throat got itchy, then my lips started tingling. My throat started getting really swollen and started to close. Even the roof of my mouth was swelling. I took a Benadryl, but after 30 minutes it didn't help, so I took a teaspoon of Childrens liquid Benadryl. Right after I took it my throat started swelling more, so I went to Anna Jacques ER. Told the receptionist my throat was closing due to an allergic reaction. She made me fill out paperwork and registered me. Told me to sit and wait for the triage nurse. After 4-5 minutes she called me in. Checked my vitals, saw my throat and mouth swollen and took me back to a room and shut a curtain. They left me there for OVER AN HOUR!!! NO one checked on me. I wasn't hooked up to keep checking my vitals. For all they know, I could've been dead back there. (While I was sitting there, THANKFULLY, the liquid Benadryl I took at home must have kicked in because my lips stopped tingling and my throat stopped itching). A nurse came in and said someone would be in shortly. When I told her it was unacceptable as I was there for an allergic reaction and my throat was swelling shut, she RUDELY said to me "the doctors were in a trauma. Also your talking fine... and it looks like you're not having trouble breathing. She left, Then after another 30 minutes they sent in a medical student who asked me questions and looked at my throat and saw it was swollen, he said he would talk to the doctor and see what they can do. After 30 MORE minutes of waiting I WALKED OUT !!!! no one stopped me or even said anything to me. I figured the Benadryl I took at home was enough to stop the swelling and itching... if my throat didn't close after 2 hours, I didn't think it would close at all... I just took some more Benadryl when I got home to be sure. If I were you, STAY AWAY FROM THAT ER !!!! read more

Don't get me wrong the place is extremely clean but when it comes to my girlfriend that is pregnant having unusual cramps they didn't do anything for 4 hours. Mind you the place wasn't busy at the time. We asked for a cup of water and took another 2 hours and finally have been seen. read more

You call the general number to ask a question--the women answers in a loud agitated hurry--forwards you to random depts when you are calling to get an answer to your question. I call HR unhelpful and utterly useless. Try to place an order with the gift shop--no one answers. The call automatically hangs up. No pickup, no voicemail option--NOTHING. This place should be absolutely ashamed to call themselves professionals. This place is waste of space. Completely understand why their ratings are so shit poor. You all have been warned. If you plan on choosing this hospital for labor and delivery, please avoid it at all costs. I was sent home after delivering my first child with an infection that was contracted by a midwife's violation of sterile procedures during my delivery. I spent 4 days home with my newborn until I collapsed, had a temperature of 104 degrees and was readmitted to the hospital where I spent the next 5 days separated from my newborn baby. Traumatic experience to say the least as a first time mother. 1 year later, still waiting on a call back from the president of the hospital. It is mind blowing that this place is allowed to conduct medical procedures. Please only use this hospital as a last resort. Would not wish my experience upon anyone. read more

I went to Anna Jacques by ambulance sometime in march on a Sunday. brenden my ER nurse was excellent.I landed in room 249 where the care just continue to be excellent.With nurse Margaret,Kirsten and joe.The Dynamic duo in the basement that gave me my stress test.Sorry to say but I forgot your names I know that's hard to believe LOL.
