She was prescribed treatment that ultimately proved ineffective, and no systemic antibiotic was prescribed, even though her infection continued to worsen over the following weeks. What concerns me even more is that I later sought a second opinion from another veterinarian, who immediately identified the ear infection as a yeast infection, carefully explained the difference, showed me exactly what was happening inside Lucy's ear, and demonstrated how the ear canal had become narrowed due to inflammation. He prescribed an appropriate treatment plan that included antibiotic ear drops, oral antibiotics, prednisone, and Apoquel. Within a very short time, Lucy showed significant improvement. The difference in the eye examinations was equally troubling. I was previously told that Lucy's eyes were essentially normal and that she could see through them. The second veterinarian performed a far more careful examination, explained that she has glaucoma, pointed out the differences between both eyes, and referred me to a veterinary ophthalmologist for specialized care. That level of attention and communication gave me confidence that my dog was finally receiving the care she needed. He also performed a much more comprehensive physical examination and identified another issue that had not been discussed previously--a soft mammary cyst that will eventually require surgical removal after her current medical problems are addressed. Rather than recommending multiple expensive visits without a clear plan, he prioritized Lucy's conditions logically: first the ear infection, then the glaucoma evaluation, and finally surgery. Perhaps the most surprising part was the cost. The second veterinarian charged me approximately $150 for the examination, medications, and a complete treatment plan. I left understanding my dog's condition, knowing what to expect next, and most importantly, seeing real improvement almost immediately. Lucy is 14 years old--about 72 years old in dog years. At her age, she deserves careful, compassionate, and thorough medical care. My experience here simply did not provide that level of confidence. Every pet owner deserves clear communication, careful diagnostics, and treatment plans based on a thorough examination.
