I saw Dr. Macri. I find her very compassionate, smart and fair. One thing that would definitely bring me back is she did not give me only the most expensive options, did not run unnecessary blood work ups or stool samples until we found out if the my dog Bully had a mass in his stomachs and if so if it was operable. We chose to have a half sonogram which showed a mass and followed up with a full sonogram which showed several masses connected to his liver. Not operable By running blood tests and stool samples would have added hundreds to a bill and would be totally unnecessary. These are the things that show me they care and are not taking advantage of you. We decided not to wait even though Bully wasn't in real pain but uncomfortable as there was no telling when he would be but it would be very soon. After a day of visiting his favorite neighbors, treats and love we brought him in. This was the saddest but easiest euthanasia I have had to do in my life. My baby wasn't screaming in pain, seizing or uncomfortable. He liked Dr. Macri and since he was just there was not suspicious, nervous. He went to sleep and left us calmly, easily. I recently moved to SI and was looking for a new place. Dr. Brown came highly recommended. She took fecal and ran tests. It's been 3 months and has still not called in regards to moving forward with vaccines and testing recommendations. I have left several messages for a response and nothing. The main veterinarian here is Dr Jerger- total Scammer and unethical person. He botched my dog's surgery, and then when I had questions about it he belittled me and put me down. Also the office STILL does not allow anyone in for "covid reasons"- yet every other type of buisiness including Medical offices DO. So if you want to wait in your car ir outside in the freezing cold and rain, Dr Jerger wont care. One of the worst vets around. Also he got into a PHYSICAL confrontation with me , outside of the office, yelling and accusing me of using illicit drugs , all this in front of other patients (they were waiting outside since no one is ever allowed in - not bc of Covid since every other business lets people in- but because this office is extremely lazy and doesnt want you to see how they "work"). So if you want a doctor who gets into physical confrontations with his patients, demeans them, doesn't allow them to see what goes on in the office, and having to wait in thr freezing cold (not everyone has a car)- then this scumbag veterinarian is for you. I needed a vet in a hurry on a Sunday and Dr. Jerger returned my call and had me come in right away. He quickly put me in system and went right to work diagnosing Bruno to see what was wrong. I was very impressed at how comfortable my dog was. He went as far as trimming his nails and cleaning his ears. He hydrated my dog and sent me home with medicine and something to add to his food. During check-ups, there are relevant questions asked. - the team knows your pet so during emergencies, there are less problems on communication. - a more personal touch Cons: - if your check-up is at 12:00, you're lucky to get your pet checked at 1:30. I brought my daughter to assists me and never again will she accompany me to wait this long. We've been here on several appointments but the wait time does get tiring. I can only compare it to Low Cost Vet mobile, the wait time is about the same on emergencies but of course, Low Cost is cheaper. Vetco was precise on vaccine appointment time but less talk,less info. -wait time can be stressful for pets in cage. - it's expensive . I could have vetco prescribe the same medications less than 2x-3x the amount. It's business really. Summary: this place is fantastic if you can bear the wait time. The expense is higher than most but it makes up for the 'personal touch.' I will still look around at other vet that can deliver a great experience with less wait time. I called in a panic because a neighborhood cat was hit by a car. I called this office begging for the cat to be euthanized as he was still alive & suffering. The receptionist was indifferent telling me the doctor was busy and he had no room for other animals. I said the cat has to be euthanized but that didn't sink in. Then she told me she would have to talk to the doctor but he was with a patient. I asked if she could interrupt the doctor & ask. She held steady. Non-caring & inhumane. A vet is supposed to be humane. I wasn't asking for free service but quick for the sake of the cat as I live in the area. We used to take our dog to a commercial in-store hospital, but it wasn't personal and it seems like they would charge us for every little thing despite having insurance with the place. When we visited Dr. Jerger the first time, he was warm and friendly and we appreciate the time he took to listen to our concerns with our dog. The staff is also very warm, friendly, and professional. The thing I appreciate the most is that your pet is treated in the same room that you are, unlike the previous vet experiences we've had. So we get to see what he's doing and he talks us through the diagnoses. We've brought our dog here for annual checkups for about 2-3 years now and will continue to do so. read more

Unfortunately we had to make a trip to the vet, as our 9 year old APBT wasn't walking correctly. She couldn't keep one of her hind paws firmly to the ground so she dragged the entire leg. We bring our pups here. They are very good and knowledgeable about veterinary care, and surgery. Our new adoption had an undescended testicle, and Dr. Jerger was able to neuter our pup with no side effects. They gave our pup pain killers, but the surgery was so successful, he did not show any signs of pain and was his old self within hours of the surgery. Finally, their prices are very reasonable and they do their best to not give animals unnecessary tests. For ten years we had been taking our dog to Dr. Carreras's office. Last month we had to put my dog to sleep. She developed a heart murmur and had a huge tumor in her chest. Her last visit to this office was mid August, 2013. Somehow, four veterinarians in this office missed what was obvious within five minutes to the vet at Bay St. Animal Hospital on August 23. An x-ray revealed that my dog's condition was grave, and so we had to make a very painful decision. In May 2013 Dr. Carreras conducted a full check up--physical, vital signs, blood, urine and stool analysis, extraction of fluid from a fatty lump she had under her left leg--all negative. While I know tests can be false negative, I don't know how they missed the development of the murmur and dismissed the signs of her inability to stop breathing and panting heavily, and loss of appetite as signs of old age, arthritis and her allergy. He even told me to exercise her a few times a day because of her arthritis. The vet at Bay St. said she could have suffered a heart attack from over exertion because of the heart murmur and tumor. Imagine if that had happened during our daily walks! I read the other review that referred to Dr, Carreras as the closest thing to "St. Francis." Well, St. Francis wasn't a doctor ,and took a vow of poverty. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have charged exorbitant prices for an incorrect diagnosis, and I don't think he would have forgiven himself for imparting wrong information concerning a beloved pet. read more

I went to another vet in-between there and here that I was very unsatisfied with. On the basis of reviews and recommendations, I made an appointment at DHVP. Wow. No offense to Richmond Valley, as they took very good care of Nemo for years, but I never knew a vet could be THIS GOOD. Everyone, from the receptionists to the technicians to the vet I've been seeing, Dr. R. Jerger, is amazing. Tests were run after a very thorough explanation of what was happening and why. Results were provided next day by the doctor himself. Now Nemo needs some dental work, and having seen the people in this office care for my dog is the only reason I'm not completely freaking out at dropping him off someplace. I know he'll be in good hands. Pros: Expert veterinary care, wonderful customer service, hardly any wait at appointments, on call 24/7 for emergencies...I could go on and on. Cons: That I didn't find them sooner! As someone who treats her dog like her child, I highly recommend Dongan HIlls Veterinary Practice to all other dog parents on the island. (Or the other boroughs. First thing. My dog has a collapsing trachea which these people answered the phone and said they had all this equipment for his breathing tests and would be able to perform a surgery If necessary. They lied to me, and when my family brought the dog to Dr Rodney Jerger. He literally ran all these tests that we already did at 6 different vets, (which they knew and could have easily requested those X ray Files) but instead charges 300 dollars for new ones without approval! And finally, they didn't have any of the equipment they said. I called the vet to be told by his office that Rodney will call me back (which he never did). I logically called my credit card company to dispute it. Ive been receiving blocked calls and calls from his personal cell phone from Rodney cursing and threatening me. Simple: If you care about your pet, don't bring him or her here. This practice performed innumerable tests on my dog. Blood tests, skin tests, urine tests, every kind of test we can rattle off. Oh, they gave the dog a cancer test. There was clearly something wrong with the dog. The dog couldn't breathe. They had no idea what was wrong - before, during, or after these tests that they "performed". The only thing they were actually doing was perpetuating the fable of performing any kind of test at all. The dog had cancer covering her lungs, all the way up through her throat, making it impossible for the dog to breathe, sleep or eat anymore. They didn't see this in the "cancer test"? Was the "cancer test" just looking at the exterior of my dog & then charging mass sums of money for a 'job well done'? Seems weird. Seems like they didn't really do anything to detect the problem or to alleviate the suffering of an animal that was obviously in agony. I'm only writing this because I cannot fathom how anyone that works at this practice can sleep with ease knowing that they are entrusted with the lives of our pets, our best friends -- yet allow them to rot, waste away, suffer as my dog had to. Once upon a time as a long time dog lover I never believed I would fall in love with an older stray cat that started coming to my front porch every so often. After I fed this cat once he started coming everyday. So we decided to keep him and name him Kobe. But of course doing so means that we would need to bring him to the vet and make sure he would get all his shots and get a check up. Dr.Jerger and his staff has been doing an amazing job! They are the nicest and most caring animal medical professionals that you will ever come across. We're not sure how old Kobe the cat is but he has a heart condition and a thyroid problem. Even though it's a bit far from our neighborhood, we make the trip happily as everyone in this office is absolutely wonderful. The doctors (and we have seen them all at various times) are knowledgeable, perceptive and have a great "bedside manner".
