Annie Ray can make anybody look cool. Her "photobooth" photography style is edgy and fun, in no small part because of her incredibly likeable personality and the way she eggs on her subjects like some kind of totally cliche French photographer ("Give me more! Give me more!"). Yet her subjects catch her enthusiasm and channel their inner goofball/badass/child/whatever, striking ridiculous poses, making faces they would never otherwise make in public, even taping gross, who-knows-where-this-has-been fake moustaches under their noses to help them get into character. Yet somehow, magically, everyone looks hip and cool and funky and lively in the end product. Or maybe everyone looks totally dorky and ridiculous, but it doesn't matter, because all your friends look that way in their shots, too. Annie Ray is some kind of photographic genius. Attention closet models! Annie Ray is your photog! Some people may ask "Why do all these folks feel the need to act a fool in front of cameras?? I don't get that behavior." Well, partially it's to have a physical memory of the event and the friends we love. But mostly it's cause an Annie Ray photo shoot is like a ride at Six Flags. It's a "weeeeeee" kinda fun where you can be as adventurous and loud and silly as you dare. When the ride is over, most folks get right back in line again. And just like a rollercoaster ride, you can end up with a crazy pic of your adventure. But Annie Ray specifically as a photographer is a joy. She's ebullient, effervescent, energetic, and encouraging which is great when you are working with stoic camera shy boys like my hubby and bff. And she makes ME look good even tho I normally take horrible pictures. I can never get my face to act right (in fact, no telling how many of the 20 or so that she takes she pitches to only post a few on her site....). And she remembers people. Having worked many a Yelp party and working with countless faces, I am amazed that she remembers my name and when she met hubby last event, she was so excited and demanded we take more pictures of just us, encouraging him "Randy love Keri! After having a taste of the wonder that is Annie Ray at Yelp events, I knew I must have her for my wedding. I was on a personal mission. Me: Honey... I know we've booked all of our vendors and satisfied the majority of our budget... but... I WANT ANNIE RAY'S PHOTOBOOTH!! Hubs: Umm... I've seen Annie Ray doing what she does on several different occasions, but my first actual conversation with her that didn't include the word "passion" was during the Yelp Event @ Space 12. And she's personally as enchanting as her photographs. We started talking because she had just asked me--out of the blue--if I had received my photo order from her, which had involved some email between us. What flummoxed me was how she knew to ask me that--does she remember everyone she photographs? Very few people impress me more than gifted artists who are on top of their business game as well as their talent. Incidentally, I had received my pictures, and they were great; I also enjoy asking people why they do whatever they do. If I could have, I would have had Annie Ray do my weddings, but she probably wasn't asking for passion drawing with crayons in the first grade. I could be wrong. I do think it would be cool to see Annie Ray in an Annie Ray photo--I'd seriously consider paying money to post it on Yelp, just so we could all enjoy the artistry. read more

Why, oh why, hasn't anyone written a review for Annie Ray yet?! Annie Ray is kind of a big deal. If you've been to any Yelp Party in the last 6 months or venture to some of Austin's more popular hang-outs, you know this already. Her amazing style of photo-booth photography is winning over Austin. I like to think, being a photographer myself, that Annie Ray and I are somewhat kindred spirits. She probably doesn't exactly feel the same way about me. I'm learning to live with that rejection. Just don't bring it up next time you see me. Ok? Actually, you would think I would take a hint. Every time I talk to Annie about photography, she tells me how much she hates it when guys come up to her and ask her geeky photography questions. Seriously, I'm starting to kind of get sick of it too, fellas. Give it a rest. Annie has a fabulous personality, which is key to being a successful photographer. I should know, I'm not very successful. The ideas she comes up with (I assume she's a matron of original thought) get revelers excited about having their picture taken and produce whimsical and beautifully bizarre portraits. You've seen many of them as avatars in these here parts. Annie's set-up is simple. A single monolight with a ring-flash adapter, a tilt-shift lens, and funky-fresh backdrops and props to get the people inspired. She doesn't require much space for what she does and she adds volumes to any gathering. I asked a certain Yelp related photographer, who shall remain nameless, "Mark, why the F*&#KING Hell cant you take a picture of me where I don't look like a slack jawed lunatic in the midst of some sort of seizure?" and he replied, "Well, if you'd ever shut the hell up...." And he had a point. I DO NOT photograph well. Surprising really, considering how devastatingly handsome I am (You can scoff here, but you know it's true). I have said it many times, even challenged a few talented photographers I know to try and take a good photo of me, and almost no one has ever pulled it off. And then, the VERY FIRST TIME the supremely talented Annie Ray got me into her photobooth, she nailed it. Absolutely NAILED it, no question about it. I had spent nearly an hour intentionally making myself look like a ridiculous goofball, and Annie turned me in to a God-like Rock and Roll BAD ASS! The woman has a gift, a real gift for bringing out her subject's personality, be it whimsical or over the top or sad or what have you. While others might attempt the photobooth idea, no one's booth photos are as unique and distinctive as Annie's. I once asked Annie Ray to take a picture with me on her camera... so she stabbed me in the NECK. But really, she just stabbed me in the heart. But really she just said she didn't look good, but she was wrong. So, I took a picture of us with my camera. Good story, James. This girl is pretty cool. I've had the pleasure of having my photo taken by Annie Ray 3 times now, and I have to say that she is the only one I've met that can target my inner badass. Annie is hands down the best event photographer in Austin, and she has the awards and accolades to prove it. Her sweet nature allows her to put her subjects at ease and pull out peoples' true personalities onto film. Whenever I'm at an event where she has a p-booth, I run over to her to partake in the fun. I hired her to shoot one of my birthday parties and my engagement pictures. Each time resulted in vibrant, gorgeous photos. To expand her portfolio, she offered to shoot my bridal portraits, which were the best photos I've ever taken in my life.
