As we were hunting around for a venue around the Austin area, I was also searching for a photographer. I came across a vendor that had a package deal with photographer, DJ, and photobooth for a pretty good deal. I was deciding to go with them... until I came across Matt Montalvo Photography. We booked Matt about 11 months out just to make sure we will have him be the photographer at our wedding. During the day of the wedding, Matt arrived on time.. was dressed nicely and knows what he was doing. I am not much of a poser and he taught us how to pose and do all that other stuff. I am glad that we had prefect weather for our wedding with some clouds in the sky.... Matt was able to take so very very very nice sunset pictures. A week has passed and we got to view all our pictures!! I can't believed it! I always hear that it takes about a couple of months to get your photos, but we got them in a week! and we LOVED the pictures!!! My husband doesn't like to take pictures and doesn't know how to look good/pose for pictures, but Matt work his magic and made him look good! We worked with Matt for our wedding pictures this May and it couldn't have gone better. The engagement pictures - where Matt led us to a mix of iconic and unique local sites - came out great. And my wife is usually a Blinky McHalfSmile in posed pictures but Matt was able to capture her at her most bridal. His ceremony/party picture M.O. is to take the 'must have' shots and then be a fly on the wall for the rest of the night. It led to some memorable photos of the celebration. One note though - if you have guests who are wallflowers or seatwarmers, point them out or otherwise you likely won't see them in your picture book (he doesn't go around doing table photos). Matt has an insane amount of experience as a photographer, and it shows in our photos! He's familiar with many Austin venues (if not all of them) and knows exactly when, where, and how to shoot to get the most beautiful photos!! He effortlessly instructed us to get into the right pose, and honestly, I don't even know how he got some of our photos because it was that easy! Matt was also amazing at getting candid shots (and had really helpful tips for us about how to get the best candid shots) and was able to capture truly amazing moments. He doesn't limit the number of photos he takes, and he takes pictures of everything he sees on top of the posed photos he already knows look good - going through the photogallery honestly felt like reliving our wedding day in all its best moments! Matt worked tirelessly on our wedding day, and if anyone (including guests) wanted him to take a picture, he would get it and keep going, even if he was taking a break! My wife and I had the pleasure of working with Matt in June of 2010 for our wedding. Matt was very professional and friendly. We met at a local coffee shop to discuss what we wanted and what he could offer us. As he was listening to my wife and I he would offer great suggestions and take notes. On the day of the wedding they did a great job getting all the pre wedding pictures taken and the after wedding pictures were a breeze. During the reception you would (matt = ninja) see him on a chair or around a corner getting great angles for pictures. Our pictures turned out beautiful! When we were looking for wedding Photographers we started by asking our other vendors who they really liked to work with and without any prompting Matt Montalvo was the first name to come up (and he actually came up twice!) After this we started looking into his photography online and set up our first meeting. Matt is very personable and had a well developed portfolio that highlighted his expertise in the field. As an artist myself (but not a photographer) this was the vendor that I was most stressed about because I wanted to make sure we had high quality photos, and that we got the rights to the photos after (which is a very important thing to ask for!) Matt walked us through a sample of his images and his editing style, which showed off his sense of composition when framing the original shots, but also his digital editing skills for cleaning up photos of unwanted items, highlighting the values of the dress, so that it doesn't just look white washed, and refining details and skin tones (which is important when you know that you are getting married outdoors in 100 degree heat!) He's is pricey but this is one of those situations where you get what you pay for, and he was worth every penny. Matt's got his style down pat and is quick with his shots so that you have more time to enjoy yourself at the wedding. He has his timing down to the exact science, and we got some amazing profile pics with the sun setting behind us. He was great about taking all of the shots you asked for in addition to the normal shots he captures. He'll definitely work with you to capture what you want as long as you let him know. ***My recommendation to future customers is to really look through his portfolio and see what kind of shots he takes and make sure you think through what you would like to have captured ahead of time. We got all of the major shots, and the candids were great, but looking back I wish I had asked for some shots of the getting ready stages (starting right before I put on the dress) and I really wish I had some "fun/faux candid" individual shots with each of my ladies (bridesmaids) in addition to the more traditional photo that I got with each Bridesmaid. My wife and I were recently married and our journey to Matt was initiated when we initially were looking at venues in Austin. We remember it clearly as we were at Villa St. Clair and were looking through the wedding photo books that they had on hand. We had no previous knowledge of Matt's capabilities or that he was even an option for our wedding but we were completely floored with his ability to capture moments with a realistic take. The other things that stood out about Matt's style were the presentation, the lighting and his ability to capture moments in such a distinguished way. Don't get us wrong, every photographer is doing their best to bring the best out of their subjects and Matt is great at that, but his photos seem less choreographed than most. Now to what we think is what makes Matt the best in the business and what makes most businesses the best at what they do, CUSTOMER SERVICE. Matt was professional, did things for our family remembers (especially regarding some of their crazier requests), and overall performed at a level that we could never have dreamed of. He captured everything that was important to us and uploaded our photos from the wedding very quickly (1 week or less) from the wedding date. You will definitely pay what you get for with Matt and there is not another photographer we could recommend for any special event due to the importance of photos. We felt that if there are things that you are going to pay a premium for (at least when the memories count most), why not your photos as they last a lifetime. Separately, why select anyone else when you can see the quality in presentation and craftsmanship that Matt has displayed. Again, this is our personal preference and may not the be the most important thing to each person getting married, but if photos are the most important thing to you then we would recommend that you select Matt every time! Matt is simply amazing. He shot our 3/16/2013 wedding as well as our engagement pictures. He is professional, responsive (VERY) and consistent. What you see on the website is exactly what you get. You spend a lot of your wedding day working with your photographer (or so I thought) but Matt captioned our day seamlessly and I didn't find pictures to be a chore, it was like he got all the shots unnoticed! Since all the others have already covered everything that's great about Matt, I won't repeat them. Matt indeed is a good photographer and captured some great pics. Our experience with him overall was pretty good. He was easy to work with, flexible, easy going and produced good results. Here are a few things that could've been better though - - Most of my getting ready pics are focused on my hair dresser even when she wasn't working on my hair/dress. I feel, as a photographer, he could've either asked her to step outside the frame to focus only on me and my family, or found a way to click the pic without focusing on the hairdresser but he didn't do that, and now I have lovely pictures with my family and hairdresser :\ In fact there are one or two pics of only my hairdresser...there's really no use of such pictures for me. So while he took about a 1000 pics, some of them were of no use for me. - Parts of the venue were not pictured such as the pool house where the guests gathered and were welcomed as they came in. So I don't have pics of those moments. I don't blame him entirely for this, a better communication between us could've avoided this. - The candid pictures during the cocktail hour were not that impressive, many of them had the backs of people. He captured some very good candid moments during the ceremony and dancing portions of the event though, so I'm not sure why the cocktail hour pics didn't come out so great. It could've been a factor of time. - While he was extremely good about taking the posed family pics as per my requirements and per what I filled in the form, it would've been nice if he had suggested a few interesting pics for us...like a crazy pic with the cousins. It had slipped my mind, would've been nice if I was asked about it. Nevertheless, we did get some amazing pics capturing some good memories from our wedding which we are very grateful for. read more

When I read the first post for Matt I was completely astonished! Matt came highly recommended to us from a friend who recently used him for her wedding. We interviewed approx. 6 Austin photographers and quite honestly, we chose Matt because he was the most reasonably priced and his work was GORGEOUS! My daughter is getting married in 2 weeks and he has taken her engagement photos and her bridal shots. For both shots, I found him extremely professional and VERY accomodating. He was willing to really listen to my daughter and do what she asked and as a result, he captured her beautifully for both shoots. I would image the wedding shots will follow suit. I have gotten so many compliments, even some from professional photographers, on what wonderful photos he took. It's hard to imagine the Matt Montalvo we know would intentionally book an appointment and then "get a better offer".
