This review is for a herniated disc & sciatica. If you have other issues, then by all means try him out because there are some positive reviews on here. I'm sure he's good with other issues and each herniated disc case is different so I don't want to totally discount him for you but here goes: I've had all over body pain (nerve pain, muscle cramps, sciatica, and tingling) for 3 years now. When I mean all over, it's all over-- arms, legs, feet, hands, neck, shoulders and face. I'm only 27 years old meaning this problem started when I was 24. I went to Dr. Antell based on my physician's recommendation, which I should've questioned because my physician is a prescription happy kind of doctor with short term solutions. He must've looked at my MRI for 5 minutes before telling me I had a herniated disc on my L4 L5 right side. When I said that was the disc I had issues with when I was 2005, then he said "Oh right." and pointed out another disc on the left side that might be the issue. He said his physical therapists would have me up and running (specifically skiing, which I love) in one month. At this point, I only had sciatica down my left leg. Once I started physical therapy, I got sciatica down my right leg, and the nerve pain spread to my neck protruding out to both hands. I think this was a combination of only doing Mckenzie exercises and being told not to stretch and do any other exercise. The repetitive motions (again, my theory) plus absolutely no stretching or building up other muscles in the body caused more pain everywhere. After 4 months of therapy, a ton of money in copays, and more pain throughout my body, he suggested me getting an epidural injection. Neither him or the doctor giving the injection told me that I should get off birth control pill-- a fact I found out later after I got intense menstrual cramps and very sick from the steroids in the shot. First of all, the shot hurt terribly although I have a high tolerance for pain and did absolutely nothing. A week after the shot, I woke up in the middle of the night sweating, skin completely white, flushed out, and with intense menstrual cramps. I called Dr. Antell & the doctor who administered my shot, and they said they didn't know how those two events were related. I know my body well so I went online to research, and SO many websites said that spine shots can onset menstrual symptoms, sweating and more. Also, a doctor I'm seeing now also said the same and was surprised they didn't know this. I was very surprised too. So after this whole mess back in 2012, I stopped going to this practice. I tried acupuncturists, pain management doctors, and chiropractors over three years without much help. I moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands, and with the help of a neurologist and physical therapy here, I see a brighter future for my chronic pain. My physical therapist here thinks that once I got the herniated disc, the rest of my body started to overcompensate for this shift and pain my body, which is why my whole body hurts. Basically, I look back 3 years ago and think if Dr. Antell and his team focused on both the disc and my overall body instead of the one point in my disc and causing pain in the rest of the body, I wouldn't be suffering from three whole years of chronic pain at such a young age. But I really can't say that I could've solved this years ago because it didn't happen. Anyways, this review has been 2.5 years in the making. I was referred to Dr. Antell by a doctor I love and trust, but my experience with Dr. Antell seemed promising at first and ended up being very disappointing. I started having horrible neck pain when I first saw and he was convinced I had a herniated disc. After several months of trying PT, chiropractic work, seeing a pain specialist almost daily (all within his clinic) and several failed drugs, everything I tried hadn't worked. Not only was everything not working, but my pain was increasing and covering more of my body quickly. Granted, his bedside manner was better than most doctors (although his emails weren't helpful--just vague like "We'll talk about this next time I see you", etc.) and he did managed to fit me in quickly to see him all the time. But Dr. Antell was arrogant and overconfident. After all these failed attempts, he discharged me, sent me to an internist to see if I had some "underlying psychiatric trauma" that caused my pain and told me a herniated disc was a "bread and butter" case and I shouldn't be having pain anymore. I was pissed. I felt like he pretty much told me that I was clinically insane or faking it. Moved home to PA and saw a top specialist at Hopkins a few months later to find out I had myofascial pain syndrome (similar to fibromyalgia). I could not believe a doctor as "great" as Antell would have no idea or even mention this could be a possibility. It's irresponsible. I keep thinking if I was diagnosed correctly by a caring doctor how much quicker I could've recovered and managed my pain. Spare yourself and go elsewhere. read more

Yes, he is friendly. Yes, he is good with small talk. Yes, he has good bedside manners. The issue is timeliness which is far more important. Dr. Antell is so unresponsive that I gave up trying to contact him and just scheduled with another doctor who I'm waiting to see. I saw him in January 2015 and he said I should get some xrays/MRIs. I've been trying to get him to send me the orders via email for 5 MONTHS. FIVE WHOLE MONTHS. It's now May of 2015. I honestly don't understand. I sent him 3 emails over the course of a MONTH inquiring as to the status of my scans, and after a whole month he responds with less than 10 words asking how my neck is. Months later in May, I tried scheduling another appointment, but his office number was giving me the run around. I finally had someone schedule me. A few days later, I thought "wait a minute, why am I going to pay again to see this guy? I just want my scan orders." So I called to cancel my appointment, and lo and behold, the desk person said that I never had an appointment to begin with. I emailed him again to get my damn xray/MRI orders, and his response was asking me which "ctr" I went to. He very well may be very knowledgeable, but I'm never going to get my issues resolved if it's taking months just to get this guy to send me some papers. Waste of money and waste of 5 months that I could have spent with another doctor. read more

I already wrote a review about NYPRW, but Dr. Antell's reviews here have made me feel that I really need to relate my experience with him: Dr. Craig Antell is a great physiatrist. I have unfortunately had my share of sports injuries, recently due to skiing. In January 2013, I tore my MCL in Park City and in January 2014, I had several microtears and bursitis in my right shoulder. Dr. Antell really knows what he is doing, theorized on what the issue was, followed up with an MRI scheduling, and then gave me instructions for recovery. These are the basics of what a doctor should do. But he went above and beyond, earning the 5 stars. 1. The insurance company probably would have insisted that an X-Ray would be good enough, but Dr. Antell did not think some of the microtears would show up on X-Ray. So he argued with the insurance company in order to make them pay for the MRI of my shoulder so that none of it would come out of my pocket. 2. In 2012, I was trying to schedule an MRI of my knee and the radiology place I was directed to did not have any open slots. Dr. Antell called two different places and insisted that this was an emergency as I would need confirmation on my torn MCL ASAP in order to prescribe the correct course of treatment. I got an appointment that same day. 3. He is very responsive via email and has been great about sending over prescriptions for physical therapy and for scans when I can't find the originals. He also will talk on the phone with you or email you so that you don't have to come into the office and incur yet another co-pay. 4. He is extremely friendly and remembers everything about you, even if you haven't seen him in over a year. I have never had any issues with scheduling (the receptionist is there until 7-8PM usually) or getting an appointment. Granted, I usually take early morning appointments so perhaps appointments run late as the day goes on, but I have found that happens from time to time at most doctors' offices if they are fairly busy and have many patients (which isn't a bad sign usually). I have also never had an issue with lack of response. Dr. Antell has always returned my calls or emails within 24 hours, and often sooner. He also followed up with me to make sure that I scheduled my MRI and that I did not have any issues with the radiology clinic. read more

Great personality. I was in a lot of pain. He worked with me for over 30 minutes and diagnosed the problem. Guided me through the process of recovery. He didn't speak over my head but to me. I could tell his goal was my recovery and empowerment. Very happy with the care I received and I would recommend him. read more

The worst. Dr Antell sent me to the worst PT clinic -- where they charged $1400 per 30-min session of PT, which I later found out from my insurance company who decided this was ludicrous and wanted me to switch clinics -- and my knee issues from running injuries were never resolved. Attempted to get in touch with him 6 months later via email (per his instructions) and never received a response. When you visit him he'll seem like the nicest person though, and you'll learn quite a bit about his life cause he loves to chit chat about anything than his work/ what you went to see him for. read more

Davon White, Amazing is an understatement, Doctor Antell helps you with the Art of learning what it is that is causing you so much pain. This is Highly effective because the more you understand your injury the better you will be at explaining to the him and the PT's what exactly is going on. Meeting this man has changed my life forever and has made me a better Student, Athlete and most importantly a better Man. When you are in pain its similar to being in a rush, meaning you don't have time or the patients to help others. With the methods he applies and you will grow spiritually because of the healing taking place as well as mentally and physically. When I first met Dr. Antell I was 315 lb over a three year period I listened to him and became inspired and now I am 225 lb. This allowed me to go back to school and obtain two degrees instead of thinking my life was over because of my chronic back pain. Listen to him and your life could change too. read more

Dr Antel saved my life. I have seen countless doctors and he is among the best. These poor reviews miss out on many facts. One such fact, the fact that ALL doctors make you wait. Doctors double book because people don't show up, show up late, cancel last minute, etc. This is the business model that we, as patients, have helped doctors to shape. I have never in my life had a worse experience with any doctor. I went to see Dr. Antell with back pain four months ago and spent three months rehabbing the wrong injury because he misdiagnosed it. I went back to see him because the pain just got worse through the entire physical therapy course, and when I saw him he admitted that the physical therapist he sent me to is bad and that he shouldn't have sent me there. He told me he would set me up with "one of the best spine physical therapists in the city" and told me to get an MRI. I came back for the MRI results two weeks later and discovered that I had been misdiagnosed and that I wasted three months rehabbing the wrong injury. He told me I actually can't see "one of the best spine physical therapists in the city" because my insurance actually wouldn't cover it, and he instead referred me back to the SAME physical therapist I had been seeing (the one that he said isn't good), except this time, he said he would email the president of the company and get me in with their best spine person. He told me to call him if I didn't hear back from them within a couple of days. A week goes by and I don't hear anything from the PT office. I call his office and his staff is completely useless, doesn't understand anything that I tell them, and refuses to let me speak to him (even though he told me to call him). My call just gets transferred to someone else who can't help me, over and over again, until I finally just lose it and start screaming. I've spent the past two days just trying to get in touch with Dr. Antell, but he will not return my calls. I am in crippling pain and this guy could not give a shit any less about his patients. Every time I've gone in to see him, he's spent 90% of the appointment telling me about his son's basketball career and the other 10% talking about the celebrities he knows and bragging about his court side Knicks tickets. This guy is the epitome of a New York sleaze-bag. He probably aspires to be Donald Trump. He really couldn't make it any clearer with his empty promises and complete lack of concern for his patients that medicine is just a cash out for him. This guy is so full of shit, it's painful to listen to him speak. DO NOT GO TO DR. ANTELL. I cannot overemphasize that enough. Just look at these other reviews. Everyone is saying the same thing. Dr. Antell accurately diagnosed my back issue and hooked me up with an excellent DR. of PT, who guided me in exercises that fixed my problem in 5 weeks. I had literally been falling on the street for almost a year with no diagnosis from several other MDs for months. Antell was strategic, smart, and decisive. They just want to keep your business, even if it is very hard for you. APPOINTMENTS ARE NEVER ON TIME - I've seen Antell several times and he is never timely. You will wait 1 to 1.5 hours to see him. ADMIN STAFF IS TERRIBLE - Good luck getting your own medical information out of this place so that you can go elsewhere. Pros: Physical therapists are nice people and work hard. I saw Dr Antell recently for a golf-related injury. I'm surprised by much of the feedback in this forum. I had no issues at all with Dr. Antell. Wait time was well within the norm and was acceptable for a busy New York medical practice. I had no delay in getting the MRI approved and the appointment booked. The day the MRI results came back, Dr. Antell called me three times between 7pm and 9pm to give me the results, and I missed his calls. He called again on Friday at 6pm to make sure he reached me with the results. This suggests to me he is putting in very full days trying to help his patients -- and is significantly more attentive to patient care than I would have expected. Dr. Antell's staff at NYU Langone was also helpful and responsive. It's early days, but I can't think of one negative in the experience. Without discounting the experience of others, I would observe that a handful of reported negative experiences in a two year period does not seem to justify a low average rating for a very busy practice, and I would guess that if the data set were larger and more representative of Dr. Antell's collective patient experience, the Yelp rating average would be much higher (full disclosure: I tend to believe that satisfied patients are much less likely to get around to posting a Yelp rating, while people who may have legitimate concerns but in any event are critical in their commentary are more likely to post). I don't typically bother posting ratings, but I saw the overall rating and I thought Dr. Antell's 2.5 star average was meaningfully off the mark -- otherwise I wouldn't have bothered submitting a rating at all. read more

Went to see the doctor for pain in my arm. It was Friday evening. Dr. said his nurse was taken ill and was absent that day. He was supposed to give me places of recommendation for physical therapy of my arm and said his nurse would call the following Monday. She never did. Had to follow up 2 times myself phoning them, waiting on the phone for them. After a week the nurse calls, doesn't really give me places I could go to, doesn't even tell me in detail what I need to say to whoever I go visit. She gave me a number for NYU near where I lived, and says everything is in the notes of the doctor. When I look at MyChart, there is nothing. Not even sure who to talk to. I don't have time to keep chasing. Unprofessional. (Doctor's personality was nice. But as others mention in their reviews when he needs to provide you with places where to go to recover, he is very bad at that). read more

Wow- I haven't written a review in awhile, but felt compelled to write after seeing Dr. Antell's reviews here. I actually have had good experiences with Dr. Antell. I don't remember the wait times, but I do remember that he really knows his stuff. He finally helped me figure out the source of my mystery knee pain and subsequent SI joint dysfunction during pregnancy. Both times, he asked questions about my movements that hadn't even occurred to me might be related to the injury, but were spot on. His office was very clear with me that they didn't accept insurance for their physical therapy and gave me a list of physical therapy clinics they recommended that did accept my insurance. I never had to follow up with him via email, so I can't speak to that. I don't recall the admin staff being particularly friendly at either location, but I long ago gave up on finding kind or even competent medical staff in NYC. read more

I have been playing basketball since the age of 10. I still play 3 times a week at 59. In my early 40's I began experiencing deterioration and pain in both knees. I had several consultations with orthopedics including one who wanted to schedule a total knee replacement. My General Practitioner recommended Dr Craig Antell. After reviewing my MRI and a thorough evaluation Dr Antell prescribed non invasive healing therapies and conditioning which got me back in top shape. I was soon playing basketball again and to this day I compete on a high level with players half my age. Once in a while I strain or pull something and immediately limp into his office. He always addresses my issues and knows exactly how to help me heal quickly. I'm eternally grateful to Dr Antell for supporting one of my life's greatest passion. Basketball is a way of life for me, a life style and I wouldn't have come this far without Dr Antell. He is an experienced professional and I highly recommend him. read more

Ok, so no one is perfect, right? Cause if we had perfection, why go to doctors? That being said, I am VERY pleased with Dr. Antell. He has helped me with 2 issues I have had for years - one since birth but no one would check. He listened, examined and got me x-rays. Probably 5 different Drs due to moves and not a one would order x-rays for me. Now I am in physical therapy and feeling better than I have my whole life. He can be a bit much, but so can I at times. And he does not push prescriptions as some mention. He got me better with physical therapy, no drugs. And your doctor is your doctor first and then maybe a friend. Even then, a good friend should tell you like it is. So if he is blunt, take the message and don't kill the messenger. read more

Idk how Dr. A has some of the reviews down here. He is one of the nicest and most knowledgeable doctors I've ever met. I'm seeing him to treat a sports hernia I have from playing ice hockey. He walked me through every image in my MRI, explaining in detail every assessment and what it meant. Even parts of the MRI that weren't necessarily related to the hernia. He kept me laughing the whole time. Did a really quick and easy physical assessment and set me up for scheduling right on the spot at his physical therapy office. He even gave me a sample prescription right on the spot so I was able to take care of any pain I should have if it arises in the future. He was an absolute pleasure from start to finish. I laughed, I cried(from laughter), and had a great time. Dr. A makes going to the doctors office a fun experience and you learn so much about what is actually wrong with you. This is really rare and he's a top quality doc. Would totally recommend!!! read more

I've went to five different doctors (including Dr. Craig Antell) & without seeing any X-rays and allowing me to explain my symptoms, Dr. Antell knew that I had a problem. He observed it with minor movements and activity. I do not know why I wasted my time elsewhere. I am not sure if doctors don't like giving MRIs anymore , but since October 2017 I have been going to different offices getting different results with no solutions. The pain just got worst. And none, not one doctor had the right answers for me until I've met Dr. Craig Antell. You could tell right away that he has a sharp intellect and needs to give any synopsis how it is. And I like it when people give it to me straight. It's he only way I'll learn how to fix,adapt & adjust the situation at hand. Not everyone can understand a mind like Dr. Antell but I do and I am grateful I didn't do the "just get 3 opinions" basic routine. If I did, I wouldn't have met him. read more

These negative reviews about Craig Antell are quite unfair. He has been my physiatrist for the past 8 years; and it has been my consistent experience with him that he has been able to diagnose each and every problem I've had correctly and quickly. Sure you sometimes have to wait to see him, but that is only because he has many patients and is extremely busy. Dr Antell is over at NYU Langone now; and I must say I'm impressed with the operation there. The staff is friendly; and the facilities are state of the art and clean. Also, one of the many reasons why I trust Dr Antell is because he actually takes the time to see how my life is going, and he remembers details that I've told him in previous visits. He truly cares about me as a patient and as a human being. And I have to repeat this again: I am amazed at the high level of his diagnostic skills. He is a super-competent doctor, and I'm grateful to say that I'm his patient. read more
