I have Anthem Blue Cross vision insurance through my work, and attempting to contact ABC via phone seems intentionally byzantine and difficult to navigate. When I called in, I was just trying to find my vision insurance policy number so that I could get my yearly checkup. Instead, I was confronted with endless automated responses, basically prompting me to pay money and giving me issues when I tried to progress. As I made my way through the automated menus, call quality got worse and worse, until the automated menu could not be heard at all through the static and distortion. Like some sick pantomime of human speech, it squawked and wheedled and cajoled at me in a language no human would recognize. I pressed buttons, any buttons, in a vain effort to hear a real person's voice. When I finally did, I was connected to a kind Indian gentleman named Albert. We struggled to understand each other through the fog of noise and warped reception, but I caught enough to understand that Albert knew just as little about this wretched rat-hole of a company as I did. Since he could not connect me with anyone or offer any advice on how I might proceed, I thanked him for his time and disconnected. After steeling myself to brave the gauntlet of machines again, I wended my way through long nothing-prompts and auto-responses, the plaintive begging to take a small, just a small peek into my wallet, to reach into my pocket and take what little I had earned. I finally got another person on the line, and to my dismay, was advised that I was transferred instead to Covered California for assistance. I gave no indication, nor answered any robo-prompts that might direct me to Covered California. I don't have any programs through CoverCal, I simply want my vision insurance policy number. I still have not retrieved it. I still seek it even now. I worry that I'll never find it, that this arcane knowledge will be forever denied to me by the bloated tapeworm that is Anthem Blue Cross. If you are looking to pay a bunch of money, but get no service, then Anthem Gold HMO program is for you. They are really fast at accepting your payments but if you want to get anything, like health care, in return. They are like a 2 legged turtle. I get to change primary care doctors and specialists every 6 months because all my doctors keep dropping off their crappy plan. This is a benefit if you like meeting new 1* rated doctors every 6 months. They assigned me a Primary care doctor who is an OBGYN....I'm a guy They then tried to assign me a pediatrician....I'm old If there were practicing witch doctors, I'm sure Anthem would find them and add them to their list. read more

The website has enormous amount of wrong information, it listed paradise valley hospital in my services and when I visited the er there, I was told they are out of network and now I have to lay 1100$. I was a huge fan of Blue Shield and Blue Cross until there was a HUGE miss regarding the difference between what was negotiated from blue shield with Sutter pertaining to me getting an intensive treatment. It's been almost 6 months now since this started. Long story short, I was quoted at 30 per visit and then I received a bill for $2,130 at the end and they tried to fabricate the quote which was sent to me by the patient advocate. While this isn't the site exactly, I want to put visibility on this and if I get a call from collections, genuinely going to be going after blue cross and blue shield with the evidence to have them pay for the lawyer, cost, and possibly more. Customer service is definitely horrible, the calls go to a call center out of the country, not 1 person followed through or called back as they said they would. Mammograms are supposed to be covered 100% but no place in my state will take this plan. I tried 2 different representatives as well as online chat & got the same run around, wasting probably 2 hours of my time. They do show plenty of providers but they either don't actually accept the plan, numbers are old & have been reassigned or the call disconnects. My stepdad is laying in a hospital dying of esophageal cancer while they continue to delay and deny his care. He almost starved to death because there was a "premium issue" that no one on their side could figure out, and he was too afraid to go to the hospital without insurance. He lost 40 lbs in a few weeks while they continued to tell healthcare providers his insurance was inactive because of the "premium issue" that was flagged on his account, despite the fact that he continued paying his premiums every two weeks while on a leave of absence. Turns out the premium issue was that my stepdad had OVERPAID his premium by $2.76. They're crooks and murders!!! At the suggestion of one of his doctors I'll be reporting them for this through official channels as well. read more

I work at hospital with Anthem HMO as my insurance . My healthcare was though Sutter/PAMF. Sutter and Anthem were in negotiations during open enrollment. I converted to PPO in order to ensure staying with PAMF. I have been with PAMF since I wad born. I am 52. Anthem and Sutter reached an agreement on New Years Eve....This is not the first time Anthem has put its patients in limbo by not settling ahead of open enrollment. Now unless a grace period to switch back is given to switch back many will be paying way more for coverage than they needed to. Anthem knows how many patients they would lose by eliminating Sutter. They always intended to settle. They waited till New Years Eve to get more money from those patients. Shame on Anthem! Do better. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CUSTOMERS IN LIMBO AGAIN! What a mistake! The company needs to get their act together. I enrolled in fall of 2024 and repeatedly received messages about auto pay not processing. Whenever I would contact cust service they would tell me there's something wrong with the website, try again later. I on a monthly basis would keep trying and ultimately would submit payment month to month...until they terminated my insurance, without any notice whatsoever. Moreover, the coverage itself sucked. Spent over 2k for a routine crown. If they hadn't terminated me without notice, I would have cancelled anyway. Will never go back and would not recommend to anyone. read more

Anthem had been great for me up until the last few months. Then it took a nose dive and has become the most ridiculously bad insurance you could have. Examples: I have A-Fib which raises my risk of stroke. My cardiologist wanted me to have a Watchman device inserted into my heart so that I would not be at risk for blood clots in my heart which A-Fib can cause, leading to stroke. Anthem denied the claim. My doctor asked them for a peer to peer consultation to explain why it was medically necessary for me to have the procedure done. The Doc Anthem assigned to do this was a General Practitioner and my Cardiologist told me that the Anthem Doc denied the claim because he didn't feel qualified to decide if the procedure should be covered. Red Flags on that interaction: (1) The procedure was very obviously a Cardiac procedure. Anthem failed to have a Cardiologist on the call rather than a Doc who had, per my Cardiologist, insufficient knowledge to approve the procedure. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know the approval was neded for a Cardiac procedure and should be review by a Doc with knowledge of Cardiology. My Doc filed an appeal and I called the patient equivalent. I told them that Anthem was acting in bad faith by having a Doc with insufficient knowledge to approve the procedure doing the peer to peer call. I kept mentioning "bad faith" which is a big concern for health insurance because you can sue for a bad faith claim denial and get punitive damages. That was on a Friday. The procedure was scheduled for the following Monday. Monday morning Anthem approved the procedure. (2) It is not a valid reason to deny the claim that Anthem's Doc didn't understand the procedure. A valid reason could be that Anthem had concluded the proced was not medically necessary. The second example occurred about a month later. My Orthopedic Surgeon asked for pre-approval for a total knee replacement. Anthem denied an in-patient claim. They wanted me to go home the day of the knee replacement! Ridiculous, particularly because I have A-Fib and I needed to be monitored for that after the surgery. My Doc was spmehowb able to get that approved, by the date of surgery, but the denial should never have happened. Anthem knew the most current records they have showed the A-fib and should have known I shouldnt go home for at least 2 days afterwards. I hope you can find better insurance. I have Anthem's top plan and this shouldn't have happened . Another reason for not getting Anthem insurance is that, by doing as they did, takes valuable time your Doc could be practicing medicine, rather than wasting time fighting Anthem for claims that should have easily been resolved m the first place. read more

BAD FAITH business is the best descriptor for this scheming organization. As others below have written, Anthem is the equivalent of having no insurance. Mid-year they removed a (generic) medication from their formulary that I have been on for 20 years and now I have to pay $360/mo (if i use insurance) or $68 w/o insurance and Goodrx. Before I do anything I confirm everything with the reps- is this in network, is this subject to deductible, what is the co-pay, etc...i screenshot these chat convos so I have documentation. I proceeded with 3 PT visits that had been ok'ed by Anthem reps and then got hit with the full bill weeks later. No-one at Anthem has been able to explain to me why. I appealed and included screen shots of the info their own reps gave to me. I received a 3 page denial which included nothing but a re-iteration of my complaint, no acknowledgement of my documentation, and no rationale for the denial. They intentionally make using healthcare services difficult to prevent members from seeking care because we are afraid of surprise bills. I have been avoiding care myself which is quickly catching up to me. Im looking for a new job and I screen employers for their insurance providers before I consider applying. I refuse to get involved with Anthem again. read more

Anthem will send a letter in October of 2024 and ask if you like your Medicare plan G supplemental plan and state that if I do then your all set then in March increase quarterly plan by $60.00. Of course this is after the enrollment period when a person would think everything is fine and there are no changes to current plan. I have spent over 4 hours this morning on the phone trying to sort out my billing and policy premium. I spoke with a live rep. and tried chat. Both were terrible. When I requested to speak to someone on shore I was told it was not an option. I finally got through to a manager (Vanessa) and she put me on hold and the call was disconnected. When I called back she was not available (no freaking surprise)!!! Anthem corporate culture is at the root of this horrific customer service. The customer service/patient care phone assistance is horrible. I just started with Anthem Blue Cross and called to see a Dr for a bad flu. Could not be scheduled for 6 weeks. They said to go to Urgent Care and referred us to an Urgent Care a few miles from our house, where we got good care. 3 Weeks later we get a bill from the Urgent Care and From Anthem saying we had to pay the Urgent Care bill because it was out of network. BUT ANTHEM PATIENT CARE# TOLD US TO GO TO THAT SPECIFC URGENT CARE. We disputed their decision to not pay the bill and got denied again. We then disputed it with the Dept of Managed Health Care and got denied again for the same reason. I decided to just pay the bill to the Urgent Care, which can only be done online and their system won't work so I cannot even pay that bill. This is so bad! read more

My feedback is similar to others, they just reject every claim, it is by far the worse insurance we have ever had. One of our family members had to have knee surgery, he got approved several years ago with another provider and then had to put it off due to needing to care for an elderly family member and in that time we switched providers. They said the arthritis was not 'bad enough' but he has been in pain for years and can't go on hikes or do normal walking activities and at his age he should be able to. We switched to blue shield and then approved immediately. I am not sure why if two providers approved why Anthem would reject, they also rejected medications we have taken for years, they just seem to reject everything, it seems like a scam they charge a lot for insurance and then reject everything. read more
