First time in Rome and spent a crazy amount of time trying to find the best food. This place popped up as a hidden gem, so we gave it a try. We had 8PM reservations on a Sat. My kids, 16 and 12 and my wife all said let's go!!! Before I get to the food I have to share the odd. This family run place has only a few servers. Service can take a long long time, but as the Roman's do, talk and have fun while waiting to eat. But you will wait and sit up to 25 minutes. Our server was an older gentleman, and he not only knew his food, but he was all business---and funny. We started with the bread, and veggie platter. Both were yummy. For the main course my wife and myself shared the pasta Carbonara.!! It was so good, and so big. Two people are needed to finish the large course. The dish was thick, Heavy and a bit spicy. This place is wonderful. We can't say enough things about it! Don't be scared off if you don't get service as soon as you sit down. We waited about 15 mins and as impatient Americans we almost left but then our fantastic server (who I think may also run this place), Umberto, showed up and took our orders very quickly. It wasn't until we began engaging with Umberto (asking him his name and about himself and the restaurant) that he really became warm. It's a small place, no real tourists here, mostly Italian spoken and it's only him working the floor so he runs around like a chicken with his head cut off. Therefore pick your moment for conversation but also do converse because he is a lovely man and he will gladly pull out a glass and have a glass of wine with you. We had 2 pasta and both I am still dreaming about: the carbonara and the zucchini blossom pappardelle. HUGE portions! Also be sure to order a bottle of the house red, no sulfates = no headaches and it's delicious! I even tried ordering another bottle in Italian and Umberto was very impressed and liked that we attempted Italian! The food was very good. Service was so-so. The main complaint was no oil with bread. The waiter enjoyed my Italian. He even gave me a smile for at least trying. My hubby not so much. He continued to order in English. But the waiter spoke good English. I ordered the linguini di frutti mare. The noodles and sauce were delicious. It's served with calamari and mussels (no shell just meat). My hubby had lasagna but it was not a solid dish. The noodles were all over the place and the sauce tasted like chef boiardi... If you don't have a reservation expect to be rudely turned away regardless of the available space. Expect no explanation for why they can't seat you or how you can make a reservation. Given the number of restaurants in the area, there's no point in lingering to find out how to do so as the food quality elsewhere is amazing. Firstly make certain you request a bread basket. By far it was the best bread we had in Italy. We thought we were back in Paris. We had a mix of pastas and meats. Zucchini roasted with a nice char on the outside, zucchini chips lightly fried in olive oil, green beans in a red sauce, and eggplant done two ways. My eyes were bigger than my stomach and we agreed to also order the roman artichokes, deep fried. I really don't know how I ate all this food for dinner, but I somehow stuffed myself silly and the pasta hadn't made its arrival yet. No exaggeration but that plate of pasta was GIANT. Yelpers, you really led me astray on this one. I feel like I wasted a very precious night on this place, in this city of wonderful food. After learning that Trastevere held so many great places for dining, and seeing an overwhelming number of 4+ star reviews of eateries in the neighborhood, my husband and I chose Antica Carlone at random. This place was disappointing from the moment we walked in and we should have listened to our instinct to leave. I'm writing this review from a bar down the street where I'm trying to drown my sorrows or at least get some of this off my chest. The service was horrible. We were obviously not welcome, and this became even more apparent when we were repeatedly ignored at every opportunity. We placed our order and waited patiently for an hour and a half to get our dinner while we watched the locals around us receiving their orders well before us despite arriving well after us. Side notes: another giveaway should have been the limited menu, half of which indicated that it was food that had been frozen. We chose the spaghetti carbonara and the ravioli alla pomodoro, which were two of the not-frozen menu items. The ravioli had absolutely no flavor and the carbonara was mediocre at best. We tried to stomach it but ended up just asking for the check and leaving. We paid just short of 60 euros for this retched experience. Oh, and during the hour and a half of wait, we were pummeled by annoying street merchants trying to sell us crappy souvenirs. Please take my word for it and don't go to this place, unless you're a local because that's obviously the only people they want to serve. Instead, do yourself a favor and go to Da Enzo down the street, where we ate the previous night and had a wonderful meal. It's worth the wait, and there are several places to get a drink while waiting. read more

I'm not sure if they had a problem with Americans or what it was but they were extremely rude and would not let us have a table. I highly recommend coming here to have the spaghetti carbonara! Rome is known for carbonara and Antica Trattoria Don Corlone's is excellent. I noticed the carbonara was ordered at nearly every other table as well so it really does seem to be a favorite at this restaurant. You get a big serving of fresh al dente spaghetti and the carbonara sauce is rich and flavorful. The house red wine we had with our meal was nice compliment and for dessert we had the tiramisu which was also really good. Ate here on our honeymoon after receiving a tip that this place has the best carbonara in Roma. We were not led astray! After we ordered, we could hear the hand crank in the kitchen churning out fresh pasta. When it arrived, it was an awesome shade of yellow, rich with egginess (I suspect they used only or mostly yolk), and contained ample and huge chunks of pacetta. Despite the fact that this was a primi, it could have easily been two meals for one person. Given that we had skipped lunch, however, we split this and one secondi. The pasta was hugely rich and yet light at the same time---I have no idea how they did it, but despite the rich and complex flavors, it did not feel like eating something remarkably heavy. They also make their own house wine, which was great (although in Italy, the house wine everywhere is great). We finished off the meal with panna cotta topped with mixed berries, which again was very rich yet somehow light. This place is a truly authentic family-run gem located off the beaten path on a little side-street in the Trastevere. If you're looking for a real deal local restaurant---where the servers are all related to each other, know most of the patrons that come in, and don't speak a word of English---that cooks traditional and awesome food, go here. As previously stated the Carbonara is the Best in Rome. The pasta is cooked perfectly and the pancetta is bountiful. The Coda (oxtail) Roman Style was fall off the bone tender and delicious. We had the requisite fried artichokes. The house wine here is homemade and drinks really good. Finally, I dont usually order dessert because prefer to walk and sample someplace else, but the dolce here were to good to pass up. My nephew had the Tiramisu and i had a ricotta cheese and berry tort that was incredible. The portions her are Large, they even serve platters of pasta for sharing. When we first arrived I searched for the hostess to ask for a table. She immediately gave me an oddly freaked out look (like 'why are you talking to me?!') and went into the kitchen to get someone. A man wearing an apron came out looking crazy annoyed. He immediately began kept shooing me away with his hand while quickly walking me to the door. 'Full! Full!' he kept saying. There are so many restaurants in the area, but we came here specifically from the great Yelp reviews and it did not disappoint! I never believed I could tell the difference between pasta in the US and better pasta in Italy, but the pasta here was something I've never experienced before. It was one of the best pastas I had on my trip to Italy. We had the pomodoro and the carbonara. Portions were relatively large. The staff speak mostly Italian, but we were able to communicate and they understood our allergies and dietary restrictions. We were lucky to have gotten there early, but the place fills up quickly. A large group of us showed up for dinner; so, it was served family-style, following a nice selection of bread to enjoy with our drinks. Both the carbonara and cacio e pepe are ridiculously flavorful...and RICH. You may want to chase either one with salad, veggies, or fresh fruit to cleanse your palate. The service was attentive and polite and the restaurant can accommodate 1-2 large groups (~10) at a time, along with a selection of regular tables. Odd experience. Took the fam here cause they had a hamburger deal - I know hamburger in Italy but kids will be kids. So it came with a drink and fries for 10 euro. Get the bill they added 3 euros for the advertised included drink. I asked it to be removed. My meal was suppose to be about 100. Dude comes back with credit card receipt to sign that says 185???? I complain and he gives me 85 in cash. As I grab my change he takes the one euro that I didn't get a chance to pick up yet. Self tipping? I heard dealers at old Macau casinos did this not wait staff in Italy. I didn't lose but imagine if I blindly signed???? Otherwise food was solid. Carbonara was spot on with the other reviews. Don't come here expecting quick service. This is a family owned business. The pasta is 'fatto in casa'. They also make the wine and it goes very well with the food. The wait staff can be a little grumpy, but trust me. It's all worth it. Be patient and slow down, you're in ROME. They won't bother you after the food is brought to your table, not even to being the bill. Instead they will leave you in peace to enjoy the meal and the company. For hours if that's what you want. It's a beautiful thing. I'm extremely picky but "Da Carlone" made me remember how great Italian cuisine is after years far away from Italy. My boyfriend and I ordered Spaghetti alla Carbonara and tonnarelli cacio e Pepe, then the house Wine, coda alla vaccinara and carciofi alla giudia. The food was AMAZING. The carbonara is something you don't find anywhere else but there. Wow. The desserts are amazing as well. I suggest the chocolate and pears pie because it's extremely rich and absolutely delicious. The service was fantastic as well. The waiters and the owner were making sure the dinner was going well. It's a nice sunny day in Rome around 2:20 pm and we are walking towards this restaurant which we got told makes good carbonara. As we enter the place, no one seems to care about the new customers approaching. I manage to stop a waiter and I get told in a very impolite way "restaurant full! Full!". We have a look around and the place is clearly not full at all, in fact we could count at least 5 tables available. So we ask another person which then turns out to be the owner of the place and he starts screaming "closed, we are closed! CLOSED!". I've rarely witnessed such a rude behaviour towards potential customers. So arrogant, so rude, so unnecessary. We were just asking if we could get a table. But it was 2:30 pm. And at 2:30 pm they finish their lunch shift. Well guess not everyone is in the need to work a lot to make a living. Good for them. But next time remember that being rude to customers is generally not a good idea, especially if they can then write about it on the internet and millions of people can get to know what you did to them and how you treated them.
