Trattoria Da Bucatino was recommended to us by my husband's cousin's sister-in-law. Though she hasn't been to the place herself, I can see why it's a local hot spot. Da Bucatino was a very cute establishment. Like most Trattorias, the place felt cozy and comfortable like you're having dinner at nonna's. Service was fine. I thought it was funny that the server was taking jabs at us, calling Coca-Cola as American Champagne, for example. We ordered the proscuitto and melon to share. I don't eat pork, but I gladly indulged on the thick cuts of ripe melon. My husband enjoyed the proscuitto and melon pairing, which reminded him of his childhood. My husband got the carbonara, and I got the mushroom fettucine. We both thought our pastas were just OK. I did find my fettucine cooked perfectly al dente, but my husband's rigatoni needed to be cooked 30 seconds longer. read more

This is my favorite place in Rome. The pasta is superb, as is the service and the house wine! The place is packed with locals, who know what a great place they've got. So far the best meal we have had in Rome. You can tell that you have picked the right spot when everyone around you appears to be a local. One of my kids had steak and absolutely loved it although it did come a little undercooked. We sent it back and it came back perfect. I had an unbelievable linguine with clams. It was absolutely stellar. My kids had Gnocchi with a meat Ragu and it looked unbelievable. They could not get over how good it was and they said it was one of the best meals they've ever had. The food was not very good, bland and greasy, the veal tasted old. The service was appalling. The waiter was rude immediately, he did not check on us during our meal and it took forever to get the check. They also added a tip, which I'm pretty sure isn't common here. read more

Terrible. Terrible. I have not experienced service as bad as this in a very long time and fairly certain it was because we were not Italian or didn't speak Italian. Service was a complete jerk to us yet jovial with other tables. Food was awful and the server brought every dish out at once and was so rude that the bad service felt intentional. One of my favorite things to do when traveling is to wander outside the tourist areas into the local neighborhoods. After walking for quite a while and not finding anything I had to ask a few people where to eat. I was led right to Bucatino. What a gem of a place! The people were warm, welcoming and patient with my rusty Italian. The food was phenomenal! This was definitely the best meal we had in Rome. Bucatino is absolutely worth a stop. read more

I come to Rome every 6 months for at least 3 weeks. I cone to da Bucatino at least 3 times esc visit. As my departure time gets closer, my visits here increase. The food is soooo good!! ...the sauce is the best I've had. Dont be intimidated by the intense, serious waiters... is part of the charm! read more

We visited Rome, from America and England and we took 5 children between age 6 and 16, with 2 adults and we raved about this place to our friends and family! Fantastic food, environment and service. Food is still ok but it's plain sad to see so many of your certainties turn to dust over the years. The stuff on the antipasti buffet was old and tough, the pasta dishes were ok. I bit away from the touristy sections of Rome, 'twas a good find - this place is a corner restaurant a block back from main streets, has a nice laid back atmosphere, and decent service. House white wine was nice, very subtle - so .750ml kind of... disappeared somewhere. @_@ Now the rest of the dinner i can't remember.... (i kid i kid...) So Thursday night is gnocci night (says the menu) - enjoyed some good gnocci. Texture and flavor both. Shrimp risotto was great as well. The shrimp were pretty tiny, but the flavor was all there, I'd order this again. Finally, enjoyed the tiramisu. It was pretty good, though I think I was hoping for a bit more of a sweeter flavor, that's just a personal preference I spose. This is a no nonsense restaurant focusing on Roman cuisine, with a specialty in Quinto Quarto, roughly translated as the "fifth" quarter of the animal (entrails, trippe, etc.). This is typical of the more pedestrian class of Roman cuisine historically and forms an important and creative part of the current foodie oeuvre. This all sounds more risque than it actually is, so rest at ease: the food is very approachable and comforting. Lots of locals and definitely some foreigners, but they were foodies... Antipasto buffet: will not disappoint. I'm sure the selection changes daily as it changed during our self-served plating. PRIMI Bucatini Amatriciana: a house speciality, this dish is hearty, rich and amazing. Think hollowed out nintendo game controller cords (when they existed) cooked very al dente, with a tomato-based Amatriciana with huge chunks of pancetta/bacon that were super flavorful. Rigatoni w/ Carciofi, et al: this dish was somewhat disappointing, especially given the rec from our waiter. Possible reason was that the original pasta to be served with the sauce was not available...?.... SECONDI Coniglio alla Cacciatore: super good version of rabbit on the bone, cooked in the oven (al forno) with olive oil, garlic, and vinegar. This is one of the lighter options and is very well done. Coda alla Vaccinara: Oxtail braised in celery and tomato broth. Think lamb osso buco or braised beef stew. Very succulent, heavy stuff. I'd order it again, happily. All in all, an affordable peak into non-glamourous Italian/Roman cuisine. I like this place! side note: solid wine list. read more

Reservation heavily recommended. The food was good, but fair warning: do not come here if you are an English speaking tourist. There is a clear difference in the way that the staff treat English speakers versus Italian speakers. I'm not one to criticize service, because I understand that the restaurant business is stressful. OK, so Testaccio is not exactly Rome's friendliest neighborhood, but I came here to eat, not make friends! This was our first meal in Rome, and it did not disappoint. With a bit of finger-pointing at the menu, and a few awkward silences, we managed to get our order in and sat back to enjoy the wine and water. I enjoyed the Coniglio alla Cacciatore or Huntsman's Rabbit, and my wife had the Pollo con Peperone, or Chicken with Peppers. I've been coming here for years and am never disappointed. Roman friends introduced me to the place and I keep coming back every time I'm in Rome and even bring students here for a special dinner when I lead groups. I love the fish, the antipasto spread, the roast lamb or pork, the scotta-ditto (lamb chops that looks like a plate of bones but tastes terrific) and of course, the bucatini!:) It's the real thing and no matter where else I go, I always want to come back here. We stayed in the neighbourhood and wanted to try some local fare. This restaurant did not disappoint. The service was good, certainly a million times better than we had at Il Cantinone the night before. We were helped by a friendly mamma who seemed to own (definitely run) the place. The food was great. The most flavourful pasta we've had thus far during our month in Italy. Stumbled on this little restaurant - out of the very touristy areas. We were able to get a table outside but it looks like you should make a reservation if that is your preference. Almost all the tables had reserved on them. The food was very good but seemed a bit pedestrian. The waiter barely acknowledged us - somewhere between businesslike and rude. We were there at 1pm and only a dinner menu was available. We had hoped for pizza for lunch. If you want a meal with locals and family fare this is the place for you. We went here with a local resident. Excellent food and wine. The parking is a disaster so take the metro to pyramide or take a cab. The lentils and the puntarele (salad) was awesome starter. We had the pork, lamb and carbonara. Nothing has compared to anything I have had in Italy before. Massimo, the owner, made sure we were happy with everything. It was a big help that we speak Italian but plenty of English only speakers there too. Definitely worth the trip. read more

This place was a rip off and my family was treated awful. The owner wouldn't give us menus to look at and brought out food for us that we didn't even want. Total: four artichokes, four basic pastas, two desserts and a bottle of wine = well over $150 USD. There are better restaurants that don't make you feel like a tourist who gets bamboozled. read more
