Extremely unprofessional treatment! I've been training calisthenics for nearly 10 years, and when my friend recently moved to Carmel, we both joined this gym so we'd have a convenient place to train together. Unfortunately, our experience has been extremely disappointing due to how we were treated by the manager Josh Ryan. Last week, in the middle of our workout, a guy approached us and asked if we were training. I said yes, and he immediately told us that personal training wasn't allowed. I explained that we weren't personal training, just two friends working out together, as we've done for years. He insisted that he had been watching us and claimed that I wasn't actually working out, even though I had performed the exact same exercises as my friend, rep for rep. I even told him he could check the security footage, but he dismissed it and instead commented that I "wasn't even dressed for a workout" which was absurd, considering I was wearing joggers, a hoodie, and Vans, the same thing I always train in. Without any real explanation, he told us we had to leave immediately and weren't even allowed to finish our session. Keep in mind, we are both paying members. He did this in front of everyone in the gym, embarrassing us for no reason. When I said I would just cancel my membership since I was only paying to train with my friend, he then informed me that he couldn't cancel it because he was actually off the clock and the club wasn't currently staffed. So he kicked us out while off-duty, but I had to come back another time just to cancel my membership. The entire experience was unprofessional and unnecessary. Instead of trying to understand the situation, the manager chose to go on a power trip and ended up driving away paying members who were simply working out together. If you're looking for a supportive and welcoming gym environment, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. read more

I've been a member of this gym since 2009 as it was convenient to work. I have seen many positive changes recently in the way the facility is being managed, and in a holistic sense. This includes everything from manager presence and customer service, to trainer availability, to back office operations (billing, membership), to equipment maintenance, to signage. I won't get into the previous problems because those weren't issues that should be attributed to current management. But it is worthwhile to note that there is a big contrast. For what the gym provides--various cardio and weight machines plus ample free weights; studio for floor work (BOSU, orbs, mats, more free weights kettle balls, etc), spinning bikes and classes; non-gender bathroom and gendered bathrooms with showers--I think my membership is a good value. A feature of Anytime Fitness that I particularly like is that one can truly go anytime. I've been on holidays and at 12midnight and felt safe and secure even when alone in the gym. With Anytime only one short block from the Monon, on nice weather days I like to run the trail then duck in for upper body weight lifting. That makes for an especially convenient and fun total-body workout. The new managers have made me feel appreciated. They had a week-long Customer Appreciation party last Fall that was super fun and helped get me out of my workout box by trying new equipment and meeting personal/class trainers. I hope they continue to do things like that once in a while. read more

This is a great place to work out with professional management and awesome personal trainers. I've not participated in one of their many fitness classes, but I see many people doing so and enjoying them. They continue to upgrade equipment and will be doing an overhaul of tv's and internet service soon. If you're looking for a great personal trainer, I highly recommend Jordan. The location is great, as well, located on Main St. just off the Monon. I highly recommended and appreciate all they've done recently to turn things around. read more

This is uncharacteristic of me, but I think that reviewer Cali T may have given this place a bad shake with a few of her complaints... No, there is no child care, but I don't know why you would expect there to be. There has been music playing (pretty typical gym music) every single time I have been in nearly two years. And as for group fitness being nonexistent, I have been to three yoga classes there and my friend goes every week. As for managerial presence, no I don't see what I presume to be owners there frequently, but during staffer hours I have always been welcomed with a nice hello and wave- most people, I think, don't want much more when they are in their workout/zen mode. One thing to consider with staffing is that it is a 24 hour gym and there are STAFFED hours... I hate to be argumentative but I dislike seeing unfair reviews; there is only so much that a business can help. That being said, my review is not a rave. This gym is one thing, adequate. The facility is small, so no there is not much equipment. Also, there are two shower rooms and a unisex restroom. During peak workout times, these can impede a shower after the gym. To anyone considering joining, I would tell you to consider why I remain a member, their walkable location (for me and most Carmelites) and their 24 hour access. These are really the two things that Anytime Fitness has going for it. My experiences have never been poor here, simply adequate. To me, that's three stars. read more

Great place to workout. There is limited equipment/it's a smaller gym but I like it because, there aren't as many people... it's never crowded. Sometimes it feels like you have the gym to yourself. You can come in 24/7 whenever you'd like with your key. There are also fitness classes and personal trainers. The facility is clean and the bathroom/showers are nice as well. Highly recommend this gym to anyone who loves in downtown Carmel. read more

I used to swear by this gym. Pretty clean and usually fairly empty so you can get in get your stuff down and get back out of there. The men's bathroom has been out of service for over a week now. And I don't know what happened to Justin who ran the front desk and gave a friendly greeting every time I came in, but he isn't there anymore. The new guy seems nice, but seems to preoccupied to muster a hello. I'll keep coming because of the convenient location, but can't recommend it anymore. read more

This is a decent place for a quick work out. Don't expect a big gym with tons of amenities because this place won't deliver that. It doesn't even have enough weight lifting machines and they only carry two kinds of cardio machines: elliptical and treadmill. It's located in a convenient area and parking is easy. This club as kind of a hidden treasure. It is very close to the Monon Trail and all of the amenities in downtown Carmel. This club offers great group fitness classes, via the Les Mills fitness program. They have classes during the day and in the evenings, as well as on weekend mornings. Classes include Bodypump, Bodycombat, BodyAttack, Bodyflow (yoga) and CS Works. The club is kept really clean. They have private shower rooms, which are really nice. Membership here also gives you access to all of the other Anytime Fitness clubs and the club is 24 hours, so you can get in anytime. If you don't like the huge "mega-clubs" this club is a great alternative. Note that there are no amenities for kids of childcare, so leave the kiddos at home. This is the only thing keeping me from a 5-star rating. read more

They are improving so much. I have been a member now for 2 years. I go quite often. For the first few months there was a new manager about every 6 weeks. Now they are under new management and there is someone there most every day. They put a suggestion box in and one of the biggest complaints must have been the TVs because they now all work. The added a few machines as well. I see good things in the future. The only thing I do not like is they are taking away the wipes and replacing them with gross reused towels and a spray bottle. He told my son "to get the hell out". It's unfortunate there are companies like this that would have been great for my son to join as it was conveniently located. Instead he end up going to another gym. I asked my almost 17 year son to look around to find a gym as he was interested in starting to use special gym equipment. When he entered this place, as his first choice, he was polite and asked to speak to someone about membership. The manager asked my son to follow him to his office as there were people working out on the floor. Without going over anything with him, he just simply said, get the hell out". Was it because he was young or Asian? I don't know. How does a company survive by driving out their customers? They should be ashamed of how they treated my son and frankly, if you don't want younger customers, make it a 21 year old and older advertised gym. Bad business owners. read more

Owner completely disengenuous and was told they had a special deal, also told my father it would be $29 a month. He lied to my face about it anr then when had my father tell him he made some excuse and wont honor the deal. Wants to charge $35 and a joining fee. Josh and the staff have done a tremendous job over the past year improving the facility and the climate The staff takes a personal interest in everyone who comes through the doors. They offer assessments and advice to all who join. I have been a strength & conditioning coach for 42 years and it is a great place to train. I would highly recommend it. read more

This gym could be so much better if it were run by people who care, they expect people to come to them without lifting a finger to get business in their doors. The owners or management are barely ever present, they give different rates and deals to different people depending on their mood. There's no "ambiance" for a gym, no music playing in the facility, a very sterile and uninviting environment for a gym. They don't utilize their group fitness room nor seem to care to offer classes that people want either. Children are not welcome in this facility either as there is no child care. read more

I've been a member of anytime fitness for 4 yrs off and on. I am a certified personal trainer and am familiar with gym policies. I was visiting the area and went to this location and brought my son (13 yrs old). After 5 minutes in there I was told that he couldn't be in the gym due to his age. I have trained kids his age and so I asked to see the written policy. The policy does not prohibit his age from being in the gym but only is not within their sales demographic (children who live with you are eligible for family add on when 15 or older. Fitness starts with family and they really should find a different approach to this situation.I have never had this problem at other locations. read more

This is the biggest joke of a club of all time. I have been a member of Anytime Fitness for over 5 years and have visited almost every Anytime Fitness in central Indiana. I can say without a doubt, this is the worst club in central Indiana. The owner/manager is one of the most backwards individuals when it comes to running and operating a gym I have ever experienced. Not only does he offer nothing when it comes to sales or promoting his club, but when it comes to running his club, he has no clue what he is doing. The first thing you should feel when entering a club to work out, whether it is your home gym or not, is a welcoming attitude. This man has none of that. No hello, no greeting of any kind of just stares at his computer or when he is out on the floor, looks for things to yell at people about. I am not necessarily expecting a hello when I enter the gym, but at least don't make people feel uncomfortable and just stare awkwardly at people when they are lifting. It creeps me out to no end. And that isn't even my biggest concern when it comes to this man. I have been lifting for over 15 years and would consider myself knowledgeable about how a gym runs and gym etiquette. I was in this gym a couple of weeks ago and was deadlifting fairly heavy weight, so there was the usual setting down of the weights between reps that caused a little bit of noise. I totally get you cannot slam weights down, but I was being as controlled as I could be given the weight. The owner was sitting training someone at the leg press machine next to where I was deadlifting. Instead of coming over and asking me to be gentler or to try and control the weight better, he sat there and gave me dirty glances while shaking his head disapprovingly. I would have been totally fine with him asking me to watch my weight and control the weight better. But that is not what this coward did. Instead, he called my home club in Plainfield, IN and complained to the manager at the Plainfield club about me. He told the Plainfield manager that he hated me and did not like how I was treating the weights when I deadlifted. He also proceeded to tell the Plainfield manager that he did not approve of my attire, which was a cut off shirt and shorts, what I have worn to every club I have ever been to with zero problem. He informed my home club's manager that my shirt quote "exposed my nipples and this was not appropriate". All the while, there were at least 3 other men in the gym who had the exact same attire as I did on that day. Needless to say, my home club manager just laughed at these ridiculous claims. He knows how I lift, knows the way I respect the weights every time I am in the gym and also knows the way I dress, which is acceptable at any and every club but Carmel. I don't know what else to say besides this is the biggest farce ever that calls itself an Anytime Fitness. I am not even advocating not joining Anytime Fitness, as I think it is a wonderful gym to be a member at. I am just telling people not to become members at this location, or to even go there in general. I wish sending this complaint would do something about the issue, but it obviously won't affect much. I just want to let everyone know about the ridiculous nature of this manager/owner and to try to prevent people from joining this club. I would hate to see anyone get treated like I did, and I have been to this club multiple times without any issue. It has just been recently this guy has some kind of bone to pick with me or something. And he won't do it directly to me, so the next time I go into that club, I will be sure to let him know what I think about his comments and let him know I will never be frequenting his club again. read more

I was at this gym for about a year with no incident, partially because I would come in during the evening when there was no staff. With a few months left on my membership I had an issue with the condition of some of the equipment and was met with an extremely rude manager who instead of trying address my concern told me "if I didn't like the equipment I could cancel my membership". Which I was able to without extra fees. I also received a chain of very rude text messages from him which I forwarded to the corporate office. In addition the place has really gone down hill as far as cleanliness goes. They never clean the floors, bathrooms or drinking fountains. The place is gross and the staff are horribly rude and unprofessional. Steer clear of this waste of time and money. read more

Agree totally with Ben G. The staff (consisting of Levi and the owner) are very unresponsive and lack personality. I know this type of gym is not a typical gym where it is heavily staffed and all the employees are to acknowledge the guests and make sure everyone is having a great experience and upsell...I think most of us come to Anytime to be left alone and as much as I appreciate that, I still think staff (whether it is a staff of one or one hundred) and the owner especially should acknowledge the guests with a friendly atmosphere and give guests the impression of wanting to come back to their club and workout again! I do not get that impression here and that really sucks...both from a business standpoint and for those guests that just might not come back and workout because they do not feel welcome. Luckily, I don't need that encouragement, but most do and it is your job in the fitness industry to make people excited about working out and wanting to come back! I hope this lack of guest interaction, does not discourage people to workout. Unfortunately, it is setting a bad example for the fitness industry. It is quite ironic that on their website, that they are now hiring "Motivated staff to promote health and inspire others! Friendly personality and great attitude required." Leslie, they do have other cardio besides Elliptical and Treadmills. There are both upright and recumbent bikes as well as a stepmill and a stairmaster. I do think this gym offers a lot of options. I like that they do not have a lot of weight machines...machines do most of the work for you and make it an "easy" workout. They are great for the elderly and those that need assistance with form however if one side is stonger than the other or you don't know what you are doing, you are just wasting your time. There are mirrors in a gym for a reason and they are all in front of the free weights because that is where you will get your best workout. Take advantage of the free weights, cables, and body weight exercises that can be done in their studio with the equipment they have. I wish they had classes for strength and cycling or even promoted personal training but apparently the owner is "too busy". I am beginning to think he is a one man show! Loosen up the reigns and hire some staff to increase your revenue and motivate guests to come to your club!!! Your club has great potential, use it to your advantage! I also agree with Ben G that the guest passes should not be offered if they do not accept them. False advertising and already setting a bad first impression. I did inquire about that as well and was told that it is a "corporate offering" and that the local owner does not participate in the guest pass. Maybe this should be taken up with corporate ? I hope this review helps others and inspires the club to step it up. The facility is great and again has lots of potential if the right staff are in place. It is one of the best Anytimes I have worked out at in the local area but am always hesitant to return because I don't feel welcome...I guess I should workout more often when it is unstaffed! HORRIBLE!! My son was overcharged when he cancelled in May, but was charged all the way up until September. When we brought it to the boss's attention, we were blasted and called Liars and negligent. His employee forgot to do his job and we were punished by it and name called. The boss, Bryan Saylor, could care more about what his customers thought about the club. He does not!! This review partially criticizes their franchise system and partially criticizes the owner of this location. When my contract was coming to an end in Lafayette, with all due diligence, I sent a letter requesting not to renew. Then I moved to Carmel and used my last couple months at the Carmel location. Unknown to me, my membership was transferred to the Carmel location and they continued to bill me months after my original contract had ended. I just contacted the Carmel location and asked the owner to 1) cancel my fraudulent non-contractural membership 2) refund me for 3 months worth of dues past my contractural obligation, during which I never entered the gym. Of course he refused, and made it seem as if he were the victim of the confusion, although there were no services rendered by their location during that time, and no resources of theirs spent. Yet, I was forced by this location's manager to allow him to keep $135 worth of dues under no contract, without stepping one foot in his gym. When caught between franchises, they will point at one another and you will lose. Unfortunately, it's experiences like these that give gym memberships a bad name.
