I was initially skeptical of acupuncture, but after several visits, I'm pretty cool with it! I first came here several years ago to see Dr. Shen, and he was awesome. He was very friendly and knowledgeable, and was a master acupuncturist and physical therapist. I always walked out of there feeling like a million bucks. I went back earlier today for the first time in forever and the experience was just as good. This time it was students Jackie and Elaine, supervised by Dr. Maddie, I believe. They were all very sweet and professional, and they did a terrific job with acupuncture and cupping. Again, walked out feeling like gold. Plus, most insurance companies cover the treatment. I've seen several different students across my visits and have been extremely satisfied each time, I highly recommend Jackie and Jessica Johnson. I like that they have late night appointments (8pm) that work well with my schedule and allows me to go home and PTFO afterwards. I have a medical condition that requires care and monitoring. A senior staff member and I had an appointment where he prescribed a patent medicine without further investigation or any follow up on my condition. This is NOT health care! I even asked if I should continue to see him but was discouraged. How can you take on a client, take their payment, prescribe a medication and never see them again? Ridiculous. If you have a mild ache or pain then maybe this is for you but I would suggest seeing a real medical pro for anything remotely important. Zero stars... read more

I see Dr. Shen at AOMA North. First, and best part - my insurance covers visits with master practitioners, and the AOMA office takes care of billing. This is a big win, as most alternative care professionals make you do it on your own. The staff is polite and professional, and the herb pharmacy is next door. Dr. Shen has provided me very effective care for sciatica and other exercise-related pain and injuries. He is experienced at working directly with Western doctors on complementary care, so I highly recommend him if you are undergoing surgery recovery or other treatments. I am chronically ill. When I first became ill, I sought help at another acupuncture clinic. Although moderately helpful, it wasn't worth the expense. My massage therapist suggested I come here since it is only $30 a visit if you see the students. There are 3-4 people with you or in and out each appointment so be aware if you are shy. The medical, environmental, personal history they took was comprehensive. Each visit I lay, fully clothed, on a table while they assess me by feeling my pulse on both sides and looking at my tongue. Weird? Yes. Works? Yes. First I focused on hot flashes happening up to 15-20 times a day, plus night-sweats. Practically gone after 3 treatments! On to the next thing.... Plan about 1.5-2 hours. Also, sometimes I am so wiped out, I have to go home. Be aware of your reaction. You can only schedule 2 out, but they have a discount if you buy 5. Really excellent people. Professional. Friendly. Really good experience. The introduction to this facility was through a coupon. I was absolutely positively impressed with the personable and professional manner of the office personnel and the practioner. I saw a student who was supervised by a professional. Blake interviewed me thoroughly and explained what could be done as a method of healing. His supervisor came in later twice to check the needles and to make a physical check. This clinic is great. After hours of calling chiropractors and not having anyone answer the phone I thought I'd try gwttong in for acupuncture. I was able to get in with one if their instructors that day while I was only hoping the week of after having some horrible sciatica pain. I left feeling so much better as just on the drive over my hips and legs were screaming for help. I was able to drive home in so much less discomfort. I highly recommend you try acupuncture for pain management. I recommend that you try to limit the amount of pills you take, and try acupuncture as a more holistic approach. This clinic offers East Asian body massage like tui na, Gua sha, and cupping. I've tried these body massage by a professional who graduated from this school and they recommended this place for an affordable option. I absolutely love cupping and tui na and for someone with chronic back issues due to scoliosis, I wanted to find an affordable clinic to go to monthly. This clinic is a student clinic and offers massages at a very discounted price (50-70% less than at a normal clinic), they also offer a discount for students. I had a student give me tui na and cupping and while I could tell that there were a few times where she was a bit nervous and didn't know what to do, she did consult with the teachers/doctors when necessary and they checked on my back as well. She was very professional and the massage and cupping felt great. overall, this is an affordable clinic for East Asian body massage and alternative medicine (I think they also offer acupuncture). It does take time to do paperwork for the first appointment so come early. read more

What's a girl to do when an hour of sleep is a far and distant memory? Resort to addictive sleeping pills again? Drive around town like a sleepy drunk person? Take your father's advice and try some Chinese medicine? The latter! My dad swears by acupuncture. He's been here many times over the years. He receives a discount for being a veteran and pays a mere $15. I receive a $10 discount for being employed by the State. I've been treated before (unofficially), but this was my first official experience, at the student clinic. My appointment was super late, and worked with my work schedule. Everything was explained to me fairly thoroughly. During this time, I had to completely reset my thinking in order to understand the Chinese way, versus Western medicine. Unfortunately, I did not wear the appropriate clothing, so I had to take my pants off (awkward) and put on a hospital like gown with it open in the front. My ashy, hairy legs were on full display. Since I was so outwardly calm, yet internally FREAKED about the needles, he started with inserting a small needle into my ear, which was supposed to relax me. He was also very careful to take note of my reactions and wincing when the needles were inserted. I know everyone always says that acupuncture doesn't hurt and that you don't feel it. And while I agree that it doesn't hurt, I FEEL THAT SHIT! A needle goes into my arm, and my ring finger starts twitching. A needle goes somewhere on my back and my left butt cheek twitches without my permission. Once all 25+ needles were in place (after the supervisor approved his treatment plan for me), I laid still for about 25 minutes with the lights dimmed and my student acupuncturist checked on me a couple times. I appreciated this greatly as I tried to unsuccessfully relax. I accepted the recommendation for a "formula" of Chinese medicine and was shown where I could pick up my medicine. I still have no idea really what they gave me but I was willing to try anything. Is my insomnia cured? No, and I don't expect that. Acupuncture is not a cure, but an attempt to relieve symptoms with frequent visits expected to continue seeing progress. I get it. And I'll definitely be back. read more

Dr. Violet Song is a 5 stars practice! She listens to your issues and treated them as needed. She is very gentle and nice. The problems I had was receptions and billing department. I called ahead to have them check of my insurance since I have met my out of pockets and they confirmed of what my co-pay will be. At my 1st appointment the receptionist requested me to pay $85 for my copay then I will get refund when billing dept. confirm of my eligibility then they just refund me in the form of my pay. That was 8/19/19 and today is 11/16/19 I have not seen any refund yet. I called Alicia Brown who is in charge of billing and who was the person checked on my insurance before I made my 1st appointment called me back a couple of time saying I will have your refund out soon but nothing happens! how can people lied to your face like that? I have a long standing condition that requires care and thought. After an 8 minute rushed phone conversation with one of there senior staff members I was prescribed some patent medicine without any future follow up suggestions. The herbs are very expensive and contain a stimulant, Ginseng. I made sure that the practitioner knew I cannot take any kind of stimulant but that was ignored...Perhaps if we were not going through the Covid-19 virus experience now in the US things might have been dealt with differently? Dr. Fan has been treating me for a while now and I cannot say enough good things about his professionalism, his wide range of knowledge, and his genuine care for his patients. He is a great listener, he is very kind, and he is absolutely dedicated to providing top-notch, individualized treatment in response to whatever issues present in his treatment rooms. I started going to Dr. Fan because he has a reputation for extraordinary skill in the realm of musculoskeletal issues. He has treated me for routine ailments, like stomach and ear aches, but he's mostly worked on old scars that left me with chronic pain, reduced range of motion, and a lack of strength in the scarred areas. These scars are the result of injuries sustained about fifteen years ago and traditional biomedicine really didn't have much to offer me. I feel so lucky to have found Dr. Fan. After a series of treatments, I am no longer in pain. It is simply INCREDIBLE what Dr. Fan has done for me. From the little things, like an earache, to major things like my chronic pain, Dr. Fan's treatments have made a huge difference in my life. From the School and Clinic's inception, I have benefited from a great number of AOMA students' and Professor Wu's treatments for many years. However, some patients experience immediate and permanent relief! The initial benefit of acupuncture for me was allergy relief. I can assure potential patients that Student Clinicians were typically very good (seniors with new students observing) and their diagnosis is first checked by a Professor before any needle placement. After needles have been in, they are again rechecked. AOMA had a more private and quiet atmosphere when I went there than some other Student Clinics in Austin and a clinic in San Marcos. That helps a lot ! Having had Dr. Wu for numerous treatments, let yourself afford professional treatments as well for effectiveness and comparison. The Master point on the top of the head treated by Dr. Wu never failed to calm me and give me back restorative sleep. Inclusion of Chinese massage is another great benefit. As soon as the needles were placed in a persistently blocked Meridian, the Chi immediately released all the way through the Meridian. Quite dramatic and convincing. I have been living out of Austin over five years now and still travel to schedule acupuncture in Austin. Brought my 76 y/o dad in to see Dr Fan for his shoulder and lower back pains. Dr. Fan took great care of him. He asked him some questions and performed acupuncture and cupping treatments during our initial visit. My dad noted improvement pretty much right away. He recently aggravated his low back pain so we'll be going back in this afternoon for another treatment. Dr. Fan and the staff here are very friendly and courteous. He has also previously treated my wife with several treatments and she was happy with the results. I only wish acupuncture was covered by health insurance, it's so much better for the patient than using various Rx medications. read more

I have been so happy with AOMA. I took my then 2 year old son to see Dr. Song when he developed a strange rash on his face. Conventional doctors told me it was a form of dermatitis and there was no other option than to put him on antibiotics for two months. There was no way I was going to accept that as our only option. My son is a healthy boy with no health issues other than this strange rash that seemed like it came out of nowhere. Dr. Song at AOMA put him on an herbal formula and did Accupressure several times with the help of the student clinic. The rash was gone within a few weeks and this happened almost a year ago. The AOMA clinic was so good to my son and knew how to solve his condition without putting toxins in his body that were not necessary. I had been having these tension like headaches for about a month last year and working out would aggravate it. Decided to see the student clinic because it was much more affordable. The student(s) will spend a good 20 mins with you asking you questions and what you are feeling. They will report to a professor, he/she will come see you in person to confirm their findings. A plan is then devised and the student will then proceed to insert the needles. It does not hurt most of the time, needles on the foot are painful though. In my case, they told me it was my digestive system that was the problem which was weird, I thought they were going to needle my neck, hands, or head, instead they needled my stomach. It's been a year, those headaches have not returned. Is it possible that time healed my body or there was some placebo effect, yes. Me, I think the acupuncture had something to do with it. I don't think acupuncture heals all ailments, but it certainly does help and I will continue to come back. Plus I don't like taking pills :) read more
