We did a large and complex remodel that involved moving interior walls, demo down to studs, new appliances, new floors, electrical and plumbing. We lived in the front part of our home while the construction was completed, so we had a front row seat to the process and navigated people working while we were home for months. If a remodel was going to go south, this would have been it. It didn't, and the final product is remarkable. There are so many elements I could speak to, but this review would be too long! I'll hit the highlights as they are worth mentioning: Price: Let's be real, cost is a central component to a remodel. Ed Brasseur was up front with us about costs, including the possibility things could cost more than expected. When prices changed, because of the market (labor, cost of lumber, etc.) or because of our choices, he let us know right away. He helped us source local vendors and made practical suggestions for where spending money was worth it and where it wasn't. Communication: I think Ed Brasseur is a straight shooter. He let us know the best ways to reach him (text vs email vs calls) for each type of concern, he was available, and his tone was helpful, kind and direct. It's a balance I haven't found in another contractor. He was also clear about timelines, payment, and kept us posted as things progressed. The Work Itself: Our home looks amazing. It is like a different house! They supported our design choices, checked in with us as they went, and made detailed suggestions that enhanced our ideas. I cannot express it well enough, so I've included some before and after pics below. The People: There are some stellar folks working with Ed, and they deserve direct shout-outs in this review: Eduardo: Eduardo is a solid team leader. He was clear, helpful and hopeful when we had concerns. When something needed to be managed, he said "no problem" and he meant it. Interactions with him felt both authentic and professional, and his work is really good. He delegated well and stepped up to handle things himself when he needed to. That's gold in a foreman. Erick: There is a real pride in the craft evident in Erick. He has a mix of a clear work ethic and a sense of humor. That made a big difference in our day-to-day experience. Working in someone's home while they are there, working from home themselves, is no easy task. He handled it personably and professionally. (PS: Our closet is great, Erick!) Moises: If you want someone to do the work both quickly and well, Moises is your man. He got right to the task, was efficient, detailed, and he's just a nice guy. He protected our furniture and other property when things needed to be masked and covered, and, to be frank, we could tell he gave a shit about us and the project. Thanks, Moises. There are others I could name, but I think the gist is clear: this is a good team, led by a solid foreman, directed by the head of a company who really knows what he is doing. Thanks, y'all. We were becoming totally frustrated in our search for an architect and a general contractor to…read moreguide an extensive remodel of our home. What we needed and seemingly could not find was an honest estimate of costs, an architect who could help us design our project and drive the permit process, and a contractor to build the project. Finally we happened upon STEL Builders. Cory, a walking advertisement for why you need to contract with STEL, jumped on our project and quickly gave us a realistic idea of costs. He introduced us to Frank, who is an awesome person and STEL's in-house architect. Frank gave us three options of drawings to choose from. Each option met our basic requirements and also outlined possible upgrades. Based on our budget, we committed to a plan. Within two months we had permits and construction began. We were assigned a dedicated project manager with whom we met weekly to assess progress in demo and ultimately new construction. Even before demo began, we met our design angel in Ivette. She guided us through selection of fixtures, cabinetry, tile, wall coverings, flooring; all the aspects of a remodel that keeps novices like us up at night. Her calm demeanor combined with her creative ideas made this an amazingly pleasurable experience! Ivette led us to our dream design outcome, and all within the budget we worked out with savant Cory in the beginning. STEL has great relationships with all the best subcontractors & receives priority on their projects, keeping the downtime in construction to a minimum. Midway through construction, our project manager left STEL. They hired a super pro replacement in Roberto. His many years of experience enabled us to stay on track for completion and enhanced the quality of the final product. Roberto is already a tremendous asset to STEL! And all along, even as he continued to take on new projects, Cory stayed in touch and treated us as if we were his only client. No question or inquiry we had was too small or insignificant for him to address nearly as quickly as it was expressed. We moved back into our home after six months and felt like every dream we had dreamt for our forever home had come true. The outcome has exceeded our very high expectations. In Cory's introduction, he touted STEL as a small, family oriented and local Design & Build Company. He was right about that. However, we think he understated how committed to these values Seth Larson and STEL Builders really are. They get it! For people like us, this is the largest and last big expenditure we'll ever make. They treated us with respect, congeniality, honesty and integrity. Our lives and our home from now on are forever enhanced from having met and worked with Cory, Frank, Ivette and Roberto. Pros: -Harry, the project manager, is VERY responsive, answering texts and suggesting materials whenever you have questions. He really does put you at ease. -Timelines: one of the biggest fears with renovations is how long it takes to get done and when problems cause delays. Harry and crew were very honest about the timeline for completion, who was doing what when, etc. They finished at exactly their quoted 3 week target date. -If there were any issues as mentioned in the cons section, they were immediately rectified and without argument. -They're cost effective and will do add-on projects for a reasonable price. Cons: -Some of the crew working on the project were a little less experienced than others. In my instance, the grout for one bathroom was inconsistent in color, so they had to spend a half day to redo it. You can tell they have other projects planned throughout the week, so they don't spend all their time focused on your house. If they did, they could probably shave more time off the project to be done faster.

He has basically destroyed my confidence in my home. I am currently in the process of gathering estimates to correct 10s of thousands of dollars of poor workmanship that does not follow accepted trade practices. Had a window consultant, a licenced glazing and general building contractor out to look at the windows. Result? All windows need pulled out, framing fixed, and reinstalled correctly. SJB also installed a window in my son's bedroom that violates fire egress code. The window only opens 18". Minimum is 20". So I need a new window there now. I have told Steve about the windows. He is ignoring me. Steve's only response to my concerns was to ask for more money, for me to sign a gag order so that I cannot review him, and to exempt him from any liability. Not. a. chance. I have attached pictures of Steve's attempt to ask me for more money and to relinquish all of my rights. Is this why I have posted the first bad review? Have others signed their rights away to make Steve go away? Not me. Steve claims I am grading "unfinished work". Tile, floors, and windows are straightened out later at the end of project? Right. So he was going to pull baseboards off and pull the planks out of the drywall? Then put the baseboards back on? He was going to magically correct the tile work? He was going to correct the window framing with the windows completely installed and all finishes complete? Makes sense. If you are reading this and had SJB do any work at your home in the past, I HIGHLY recommend inspecting the work. Also - often he said he is doing work for "free" or "part of the project". Be careful.

I called Steve the second day I had a house leak to patch up drywall and renovate the upstair bathrooms. Steve showed up the about ten days because he was busy with his schedule and water mitigation was just finished. I asked Steve to give me two separate estimates; first for the bathroom with the leak, needed the pave new tiles, dry wall and the downstair ceiling drywall. Second, for the other bathroom I wanted to renovate. I explained that first bathroom will be covered by insurance and secondary will be paid by me. He noted. I waited approximately about a week for the quote, no response. So I called multiple times and texted him for 3 days. He said he was busy and he is working on the estimate. Finally he got the estimate, and it was done incorrectly because all the items and labor costs weren't itemized as I requested. Also, he added the second bathroom into the estimate which i also requested not to add all together. I told Steve that you need to revise this estimate, because insurance co. isnt accepting this form. Another week went by, and i havent received anything. All the sudden, Steve texted me if i have decided to use another contractor, i replied not yet, and I'm waiting on the estimate still. He forwarded me the revised estimate about a day later with second bathroom in the estimate. At the point, I've just given up. Basically, he left me hanging, and I have no master bathroom to use and giant hole in the ceiling. If I would have used another contractor, this would have been completed by today. Obiviously Steve couldnt follow simple instruction. I wouldnt trust my house in his hands either. If you like to wait for one response everyday 4 days, use Steve. Your remodeling will be done in about 6 months.
