I have an 80ft wooden deck that I wanted to replace with composite materials. After interviewing different contractors, I chose Block Island based on reviews. I was impressed with Rick's professionalism from the first time we met. Rick and his team replaced a huge deck and patio for me this month. His team, William and Matt, were always on time and communicated daily as to next steps. During the entire process, the area was kept tidy, so as to minimize disruption of my daily life. I would definitely recommend them to anyone considering a project of this size. They worked efficiently, effectively and did a beautiful job.

Before & after

I couldn't be more pleased with my new deck. Rick and his crew were professional, efficient, neat, considerate, and personable. We had a few other bids but nothing as comprehensive and detailed as the bid we got from Block Island, including a computer-generated rendering of what we could expect our deck to look like. Rick was very patient with any inquiry I made and with changes to our original request. The final product is exactly what we wanted and rock solid, "you could park a car on it"! The cost was incredibly reasonable and we'll enjoy taking advantage of our view and new deck for many years to come. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BLOCK ISLAND and will refer them to any friends & family. Fiberon deck boards and railing with glass inserts, Carlsbad, CA

Block Island removed an existing large, wraparound, cantilevered 25-year old Douglas Fir deck from the second story of our home, including the substructure, deck boards, and railing, and replaced it with a new deck that has a pressure-treated substructure, composite (Fiberon Horizon) deck boards, and composite railing with glass inserts. This job took 1-2 weeks, with either one or two men on the property for the entire day. Block Island was one of four companies we engaged to bid on the project, and not only was the price competitive, but the owner, Rick, was by far the most professional and responsive of all of the companies we contacted. He inspired our confidence to spend what is for us, a large sum of saved money (we are fixing up our home as we have the cash, rather than financing), and was very patient with our questions as we changed our minds several times about what we wanted. Although the project started a couple weeks later than originally scheduled (due to our large beam being backordered), Rick stayed in communication and finished the project within the expected parameters. He obviously cares about the quality of the finished product; for example, for this large beam that needed to be special-ordered, he paid an upcharge for a higher-quality piece of wood to ensure that we would be happy when it finally arrived, since he couldn't hand-pick the piece. He visited the job site approximately every other day to check the progress and make recommendations to the workers. All of the workers were professional and on-task, and amazingly cleaned up so that you didn't even know they were there that day. We recommend Rick and his company without hesitation, and would happily use them again and refer them to our friends and neighbors.

While here I mentioned we've always wanted a solid roof on our patio cover, which runs the entire width of our south-facing backyard. We decided to go with his recommendation of translucent polycarbonate panels. His crew replaced all damaged wood, added reinforced bracing and painted the entire structure. Couldn't be happier with the results. Highly recommended!

The price he quoted me on the phone was too high for my budget, but he admitted he wouldn't pay that much to fix the gazebo either. He then flipped the script and gave me the name and number of the handyman that HE uses when he needs one. His honesty and straight forwardness earns him a 5 star rating and future consideration for any decks or patios I might decide to build. And you may ask, who was this magic handyman that I ended up using? Well, Smokin' Joe doesn't advertise, and you won't find him on Yelp (I promised I wouldn't start a Yelp page for him), his work comes from personal recommendations from his clients, and he's got enough to keep him busy till retirement. So, thanks Dave, your friend Joe is the real deal, just like you.

Highly Recommend Beach City Stairs…read more We recently completed a staircase renovation project in our Southern California home. Like many homeowners embarking on a renovation, we researched extensively and requested bids from three different companies. One was a full-service remodeling organization, another was a smaller general contractor, and the third was Beach City Stairs. We ultimately chose Beach City Stairs because of their deep expertise and specialization in staircase construction and renovation. From the beginning, it was clear that working with a company dedicated specifically to stairs would make a significant difference in the outcome. Kenny, who initially met with us to take measurements, review current code requirements, and scope the project, was outstanding. He was communicative, knowledgeable, professional, and friendly--instilling confidence from day one. When the project began, we were equally impressed with the onsite team. They were an absolute dream to work with--meticulous, skilled, professional, and courteous. Each team member took great care in delivering their portion of the project with precision and craftsmanship. The renovation was completed on schedule and within the quoted budget. We couldn't be happier with the final result and highly recommend working with the experts at Beach City Stairs!

I'm extremely disappointed with this company…read more First, they installed wood plugs diagonally using a completely different wood species, making them extremely obvious and poorly done. I had to catch this mistake myself. They did fix it, but it should have been done right the first time. They also installed a newel post at the bottom of my stairs that had multiple markings and didn't match the other newels. I had to pay out of pocket for a replacement, and they took back the original to reuse on another project without giving me any credit for it. Most concerning, they did not provide a temporary railing during construction, which is required by California Building Code to prevent falls. I have four kids and two dogs. When I asked for a barrier to keep everyone safe, they told me to "use boxes or lawn furniture" and "zip tie those together," despite their contract stating they would install a movable temporary railing as a deterrent. When it came time to install the metal balusters, they couldn't figure out the correct spacing for the downstairs portion of the railing. Because the upstairs pattern was already installed, it was too late to match, so I had to settle for different patterns upstairs and downstairs. The stain was supposed to match my stairs. Initially, I thought it did based on the upstairs railing and even complimented the work. The next day, I realized the bottom railing was completely orange and did not match the floor at all. I reached out, and they eventually came back out, but told me the stain "matched close enough" and that the problem wasn't the stain but the wood itself having different color variations, and there was nothing they could do about it. My stairs are a beautiful natural oak color, they stained the railing bottom railing yellow/orange. See pictures Finally, I paid for two days of stain labor, but they only came for one day. I should be credited for the extra day or have the stain issue fixed. Between the poor quality, safety violations, and lack of accountability, I cannot recommend this company.

After navigating through several fence contractors, it was refreshing to find Vinyl Pro…read more I submitted a quote request online and within an hour Johnny had contacted me for an estimate appointment. This was on a Saturday afternoon, so I was impressed with his punctuality, a rarity these days across the board. We set a date/time and again, he was right here, on time, with a proactive text alert on his ETA. A few days later, I received a competitive quote/bid. Both my neighbor and I agreed Vinyl Pro was the preferred choice for our "good neighbor" fence project. The existing wood fence had been virtually destroyed by termites. A couple weeks later, before the Holidays, foreman Tony visited for a final field/project inspection and to procure a deposit (approximately 50%). Again, Tony was on time per agreement and sent an ETA text ... yes, punctuality and communication are important to me, so this was very comforting. Installation was promised on January 5th, 2026 and again, I was sent a text from the installation crew Joe and Cruz that they were on the way that morning. By the time I had returned home that morning, the old fence was gone and the new vinyl fence was already half installed. These men work efficiently and clearly take pride in their craft. Most of the installation was completed the first day (about 70-80' of vinyl with a gate on my side, fence on neighbors at the perpendicular). They informed me they'd return the following day and no surprise, they were here pretty early and had the job completed by early afternoon, with a text message and pictures to alert me the installation was completed. Very satisfied customer(s) here and I highly recommend Vinyl Pro. The vinyl fence looks fabulous and kudos to Johnny and his crew.

Tom and the crew are true professionals--honest, transparent, and knowledgeable about every aspect of the project, from design and options to overall strategy. They followed all city requirements and permits, which gave us added peace of mind. Communication was excellent throughout the entire build/process. Tom and Kira kept us informed every step of the way, so there were never any surprises.
