His crew was very professional and did an excellent job with taking care of the details in the renovation project. I found Affordable Design and Remodel on line when searching licensed contractors. The reviews were all so wonderful. At the time I was working with a contractor recommended by the insurance which was my first mistake. We made an appointment and Darrell met me at the house which at that time I had been displaced from for almost 3 months and NOTHING had been done. I could tell in a matter of moments he knew what he was talking about and he almost immediately knew what I wanted done before I was able to say it. I let the other contractor go and proceeded with Affordable Design. The insurance and the permit for the shower were the only bumps in the whole process and neither were Darrells fault. As soon as they could they got to work, I wasn't living here but dropped by here and there. Raniel was here with the crew. All of them were so nice and answered questions I had about projects I was trying to do myself. Then Jose came with another man to install shower doors. I will say the work they did is amazing. I own a 1929 Spanish style home and badly needed a new kitchen. I am a cook, but was trapped in this closed off and closed in space that maximized storage, but was horrible to entertain with. On top of that, I had a portable dishwasher that was only 18" wide and an old oven that didn't work. Enter Affordable Design and Remodel. In February 2024, I started talking with Travis and Nadir. We spent 5.5 hours one afternoon and designed the entire thing. We would knock down 2 walls, put in a double oven stove, low-profile microwave over the stove, Granite counters, kick-ass flooring! Needless to say, I was excited. Then the work started. 5.5 weeks from start to finish with very little breaks in the work throughout. Not only was the crew fantastic, but they did extra things around my house that needed some fixing!! They truly left my house 10x better than they found it! It was a bit extra, but I had them run 6 new circuits directly from the electrical box to the appliances and outlets in my kitchen. No more worrying about old wiring! I got a quote to do my 7x10' bathroom. They quoted me $22,561 if I did the demo, saving me $2500, but the quote clearly stated demo and haul away was included in the price. The quote included a $1700 mobilization charge and a $1561 final walk fee. I ended up going with Stemar and TOTALLY over the moon impressed with my new bathroom, saving myself over $10,000. After talking to a number of contractors we picked Affordable to do our kitchen remodel. This was our first home and first time working with a contractor on a big project. The initial estimate was a bit higher than some other quotes, but we picked Affordable because Dain was very thorough and seemed more trustworthy than others. Unfortunately the cost ballooned when they took another look and partially from an estimating error, but when we got underway the workers were very professional, and go out of their way to help you out when they don't have to. We asked for advice from family and friends about contractors and they warned us about all kinds of things, we've had bad experiences with contractors for smaller jobs, and I'm happy to say that Affordable did not seem to meet those bad stigmas of contractors that we were warned about. I just got my master bathroom fully remodeled and I had an amazing experience with ADR! I had the opportunity to work with Tommy throughout the entire process from the initial design to the final buildout. At the home visit, I told him that I was very concerned about the budget given my current financial situation. He listened to my needs and came up with a design that accommodated my budget for my dream bathroom. As one of those indecisive consumers who feels overwhelmed by the entire shopping process, Tommy was instrumental in helping me decide which materials, style, and colors to choose so that I would have a cohesive theme and modern look throughout my entire bathroom. We went shopping at Floor & Decor, which has a large selection at very reasonable prices but its inventory consists of discontinued products. I ended up getting my shower tile from MSI on Miramar Rd, where I was able to get modern top-of-line products at prices comparable to Floor & Decor because of his contractor pricing deal. I think this is enough of a selling point because it is that great of a deal. After getting my floating double vanity from Wayfair and two weeks of mass shopping, I ended up going with a grey color scheme with white tile floors and matte black finishes - my bathroom is stunning! Having a second opinion throughout the design process was extremely helpful for me. I don't think tile shopping will ever be the same again. While my master bathroom was being renovated, we used the guest bathroom which I had updated just last year. About a week into the project, I discovered large spots of mold in my hallway closet which sits right below the guest bath toilet. Thankfully, I already had ADR there to help me immediately diagnose the problem and it turned out that every time I flushed the guest bath toilet, it would literally rain onto my hallway closet because the previous contractor went cheap on the toilet wax ring. The mold remediation wasn't cheap, but ADR handled it and took care of it for me so seamlessly that I now have a beautiful hallway closet with white tile floor :) The entire ADR crew was a pleasure to work with - I even baked multiple batches of scones and shared with them because the crew was just that great. I would definitely work with them again and again when I have the financial means to. You can find similar work at a lower price with better customer service elsewhere. I needed to renovate my 500-square-foot condo before being able to list it for sale. I had a cross-country move and many work trips to conduct in the spring and early summer, so I was looking for a contractor who could handle my renovation without oversight and have my total trust. ADR sales reps sold me on this idea, telling me that all processes from start to finish, such as permit requests, handling any issues with my HOA, etc., to final renovations, would be entirely in their hands. They provided credentials to try to prove their trustworthiness. I had read their reviews, and their sales pitch was very professional, and they offered a discount to sign the same day. Unfortunately, the experience was anything but professional, and a 4-week project became a 4-month ordeal. I hired ADR on January 11th for a start date of April 1st, giving them plenty of time to prepare for the renovation. ADR told me this advanced notice was perfect, as they could file for the permits they needed and be ready to go come April 1st. My project manager Dain was disorganized and unreliable. He did not have a fully fleshed-out plan and timeline of what work would be completed when. He was a no-show on the date he was supposed to come to take measurements for cabinets and later contacted me, insisting on coming when we had movers at our home. He did not provide a complete list of materials he needed me to purchase despite my follow-ups. I understand there should be some flexibility to allow for mistakes. However, he had me purchase items that I later had to return or lose money on because they were not actually needed, or he changed his mind. For example, I had selected bathroom tiles and sent him the specs alongside a link to view the tiles in more detail online. He approved them, so I completed the purchase. When the tiles arrived, he had me exchange them for larger tiles because they were going to be too tedious to install. Some of the items I purchased that I had to return, such as a set of bathroom lights, had parts that went missing during the construction, so I couldn't return or save them for later use. My project manager also had very poor communication skills. He insisted on starting the construction a week early, beginning the last week of March. I explained that I would be on a business trip and unavailable, which he said would be fine. I allowed them to begin the work, but I didn't know that he did not ask the majority of his questions about the project before I left. He also had not asked me to send payment for crucial items, such as the cabinets. Thus, during the week of my international business trip, he consistently asked me to make purchases or send payments, causing more stress to a multi-day conference. I had also noticed a lot of poor workmanship and construction was being done, so I grew concerned; however, whenever I asked questions, my project manager was very dismissive and did not provide satisfactory answers. After the first three weeks of construction, I noticed no work was being done on my condo. However, my project manager did not notify me that they had paused the work. I had to leave San Diego for my cross-country move and more business trips, and once I did, I stopped receiving information, so I was completely unaware of the progress and changed timeline. My neighbors informed me that it had been weeks since anyone had been working on the condo. My realtor was waiting for the completed renovations to list the property, and thankfully, she was there. She looked up city files and saw ADR had actually not filed for the permit necessary to continue construction until April 20th. After months of paused work on the condo, my realtor entered my home and discovered that what had been completed was very poorly done (some examples attached). My realtor contacted me with pictures and notified me that the contractors had disconnected my toilet and had been using it without flushing, so urine sat in the toilet for the two months of inactivity. Once I learned of the state of my home, I contacted ADR management. I requested a new project manager and asked them to replace my toilet. While the owner tried justifying and making excuses for my experience, he did agree to switch project managers and purchase a new toilet. When the job was finally complete and ready to be listed for sale after 4 months at the end of July, the owner and I discussed compensation for my experience. The amount offered did not even cover 1/3 of my losses. However, I would only receive payment if I signed a non-disclosure agreement. I declined, as the amount offered was woefully insufficient in covering the money I lost due to their handling of the project, but ADR management tried to explain away with statements such as "mistakes happen" and that "we both lost money on this project." read more

I was searching for a contracting company for a kitchen remodel and came across AD. They sent someone out to give me a quote and it felt wrong from minute one. I had gotten quite a few quotes up until this point and AD was double the cost even when significantly reducing the things that I wanted with the project. What was largely concerning was how shady their process was. The representative they sent out created a quote for me that was itemized but I was only allowed to view the report on his computer - he would not email this to me. They also offer a discount if you sign the contract on the spot and talk about how much money they lose if you don't sign and they have to make a second appointment to come back out and talk to you instead of seeing another/new client. (How is that my problem? If you use DocuSign you don't have to come back out...). They sell sell sell themselves while at the same time refuse to be transparent. I did not sign that day and expected the quote AND contract to be sent to me so that I could review and see if things were a good fit in the days that followed. They refused. The sales representative offers to come back out to your house so that you can view everything on their computer again (and they can continue to pressure you to sign with them there in your home, not giving you the time to comfortably review things on your own). After a few hours of bickering back and forth over texts they finally sent me photos of the contract that were obstructed and missing pages. Why? How are these items not available via DocuSign or PDF? Why do I have to fight to view what they described as "pretty standard contracts that every contracting company uses". At no point was I ever given what my estimate was beyond verbal/seeing it on the reps computer that first time. So I'm supposed to sign a contract without clearly defined work orders? Without knowing everything the total includes? This was NOT my experience with other companies. I ended up going with a company that provided me work orders with pricing first who also sat with me with a copy of the contract and very kindly went over each line item and the contract PRIOR to letting me sign so that they were confident everything was clear, above board, and understood. I had a copy of everything in my hand and they had a copy of everything in theirs. None of this "I'll sit here watching you read everything on my computer". read more

ADR remodeled our 2-bedroom/2-bath condo; two months, five days a week, touching every room. It's been almost a month since the project was finalized and we're still riding high with happiness over how well everything turned out. When we were interviewing remodel firms, where two other companies said, "can't be done", ADR's Dain Pulis, who became our project manager, said, "I know how to do that." And he did. Furthermore, it was done at a cost substantially less than other companies led us to expect. Dain warned on day one that the construction process is messy business and that our 1974-built structure would probably throw complications at us. He was right (big and small), but he and site foreman Luis Mendoza dealt with each issue with care, calling in skilled trades where appropriate, and communicating with us thoroughly to making certain outcomes were in line with our objectives. We vacated the condo for the duration of the project so that work could progress most quickly. I visited nearly every day and was constantly available for consultation. Dain met us at commercial outlets to help us select and buy tile, trim, flooring, molding, vent covers, and paint, all at contractor discount prices. It was my job to purchase and ensure delivery to the worksite all new sinks, fixtures, cabinets, doors, etc. (again with advice from Dain on where to find the best prices). Luis and his team were at the condo early every weekday and were there until 5pm or later. Their desire to meet our expectations was obvious and consistent. Both Dain and Luis were clear that they didn't consider the job complete until we were genuinely happy with the result. The project was a lot of work for everyone involved.. more for me than I expected, but as stated earlier, we're loving the results.
