Blair suggested testing a stair to find out which treatment would be best. One treatment was quite a bit more expensive than the other. I was impressed with their honesty when they chose the less expensive route. I have allergies to dust (eapecially smoke from the local fires, fumes from cleaning solvents and paint fumes), but they took care to mask off the staircase from the rest of the house and used fans to suck out dust and fumes. I came through it just fine because of their consideration. Each night they cleaned up their tools and stacked them neatly and out of the way. They started and finished the job in the time they estimated, masked off the stairs from the rest of the house to keep dust at a minimum, cleaned up at the end of each day, were considerate of my allergies, and honest about using a less expensive wood treatment. Unfortunately, the guy was not very competent. Floor finish was sort of lifeless and uneven in several places, with obvious improper sanding in some corners and edges. I went to one of the big contractors in Bend for advice. They were completely booked, but gave me the name of the #1 guy they refer to for any problems - Sean at Absolute Wood Floors. Long story short: Absolute refinished the floor for a great price and the result was spectacular, perfect, great attention to detail. Night and day difference. If you are installing hardwood floors I would recommend that you at least have Sean come out and explain what he will do and the care he will take. Just meet him. I'm pretty sure you will right away know that this is the guy you want to work with. It will probably be pretty obvious. He has integrity, is dedicated to getting a superb result, and he does.
