This is an old review, but when APM did my engine, there was no internet. 20 years ago I was 17 with a small block chevy I saw sitting in my neighbors yard and bought for $50 and a 74 K5 blazer I bought from my grandpa for $600. I wanted an engine that would last. I disassembled the engine and took the parts to APM. They not only did they rebuilt it, but they took the time to explain to me what they were doing and taught me about small block chevys. My budget was limited - coyote valley clays is fun but they don't pay much - and they worked with that. The engine survived. I put it through a lot during my 20s. Lots of full throttle acceleration. Hard pulls through the sierras to snowboard and then to work. Lots of high speed freeway. Everything from 30" to 38" tires. 4,500rpm dirt road all day long. And, then 10 years without starting and parked in a carport during my 30s. Last week I pulled the plugs, oiled the cylinders, changed the oil, and fired it up and took the wife and kids for a ride around the block. The oil pressure is good and it started right up. Sounds like it has good compression. The kids loved it. I have been nothing but happy with this engine. When it was built they said, we had some free time the other evening and worked on your engine for something to do. You will be happy with this. Had a good experience. Brought in my 71 Ford FE motor. Felix found a lot of problems with it from the last guy that was in it. So he was honest with what I had brought him. He listened to what I wanted done to it. And did it. Made recommendations and helped me out on the crank and heads. It was rebuilt fairly quick. He went the extra mile to complete it. He quote was a little off, but that was expected with an older motor that someone else messed with. Over all less than a "crate motor." It fired right up and haven't had any issues with his quality of work. Between Felix, Steve and his employees, very satisfied with APM. They know their stuff and puts his reputation on it. read more

Great experience - I had a stripped exhaust manifold stud on my 1969 Spridget 1275 head that I needed extracted and replaced. I dropped by On The Road Again Classics in Morgan Hill (our local british repair shop) and they pointed me right to Felix. Felix had the manifold stud replaced, head skimmed and washed within 5 hours of dropping off and it was ready for pick up same day. I expected the Sprite to be out of commission for weeks! We used APM Custom Engines initially to replace heads on a 5.3L Vortec, out of our 2000 GMC Yukon XL (cracked heads as a result of a known and documented defect by GMC supplier Castec. When GMC refused culpability, it fell on us to repair.) We provided new OEM heads; APM Custom Engines provided the diagnostics, machining, and labor. When we realized the resulting coolant leaking into the engine over time from the formerly cracked head resulted in serious damage to the lower half of the engine, we returned to APM Custom Engines for a complete engine overhaul. This time, in addition to diagnostics, machining, and labor, they also provided the parts -- not OEM but from a supposedly reliable aftermarket supplier. So far, so good. Felix, the owner and Steve, the chief machinist are both solid, stand-up craftsman, straight shooters who know their trade and do good work. Prices are fair (for pricey Bay Area.) However, if paying by credit card, be prepared to pay extra -- APM Custom Engines now passes the credit card transaction and processing fees onto its customers. Turnaround was quick for both jobs, even more impressive because these guys always seem to be busy. Felix possesses a wealth of engine knowledge -- amazing actually -- and a dry sense of humor. He presents detailed technical information in a slightly politically-incorrect, albeit entertaining way (refreshing for the super-sensitive, PC Bay Area.) read more

Please stay away at all costs. This place is not worth going to. They are indeed fast but for good reason. I had a SR20 motor that was fully built and I made 430rwhp. I had some issues and needed the head cleaned because I found some metal in the motor. They said they cleaned it out and did everything. It took me about 6 months to recoup from all the other parts that I needed to rebuild the motor. When I put it all together and ran the car for two weeks something just wasn't right. I had the head inspected and there was still metal debris EVERYWHERE! I had to go back and buy a lot of components AGAIN. Since it was so long I didn't even bother going back to them and even if I did what are they going to do? Cover my parts (over $1500-2000) when I only paid like 250-350 to get the head cleaned. I highly doubt it. Plus it took me awhile to get the motor back up and running again. Either way I would have saved a lot of money going somewhere else which I will gladly share with anyone in a private message. Because of this mess, I had to buy new cams three times. New pistons, rods, lifters, rocker arms, valve guides, valve seals, oil pump twice! I had to get a new head, crank, block, valvetrain, valves too. I also lost the port on my first head and couldn't afford to have it ported again. All in all this was a bad experience. Many things led to not having my motor but this would have been the ultimate factor. You can only do so much and depend on places like these to know what they are doing so you can get the rest up and running. I would look elsewhere and pay more if you need too. read more

Felix is the man!!! Needed a cylinder head resurfaced since my local shop decided to be closed the past 2 days(Monday and Tuesday) with no sign with hours or when they would return. Gave them a call as I was already on my way. He let me know they were very busy, but could get it done same day. I told him I was coming from 30 miles south, and he agreed to knock it out in an hour. We got a recommendation for APM Custom Engines from a friend who has no monetary interest in the business or the outcomes. Thanks, Bill! We brought in two sets of J casting 455 heads, one of which had only 8K miles on it but had incompetently ground seats and strangely worn valve stems; and the other that had had a long life and needed a full valve job. We also brought in a set of ready-to-install C casting 442 heads that were clean and flat, with new valves. However, the valve stem heights had a lot of variation, and since we couldn't install adjustable rockers; and the C head isn't hardened, so for our heavy-vehicle application the heads would have likely required maintenance in tens of thousands of miles. We were looking for the fastest way to get our short block ready to install. Felix evaluated the heads, selected our best option (the C casting!), looked at how much freedom he had to grind the already-ground valve stems, evaluated our new springs and new valve seals, and talked to us about clearances to the water jacket for the seats. We talked to Steve a little after Felix had written up the work order. Business is a little slower in the weeks leading up to April 15th, so we were able to pick up our heads the same day. The valve heights were much improved (we only need two lengths of pushrods instead of custom cutting and grinding each pushrod to get the right preload), and the hardened exhaust seats were neatly and uniformly staked into the head. The work looked like it was worth the price we paid, and it was worth driving to Gilroy twice in one day. read more

buyers beware... scam artist. dont do good work and wont honor your warranty on the engine he build because he really doesnt know how to build a propper engine... in August of 2016 i purchse a 1 year old engine that they have build, felix the owner/scam artist has said that the engine was just rebuild a year ago. so i decided to purchase it and also buy a new transmission. so i thought, a bout a month after the engine blew out and so did the trasmission. come to find out that the engine has a bolt in it and he charge me for a new transmission; even though, he just reuse my old transmission and also charge me 400 for a power stearing pump. so he wrote on my reciete thast i have a limited lifetime warraty. But when i went back there to ask him to fix the engine he just build he told me hat i should learn how ti fix my car or just drive a toyota. WOW. taking my money wasnt enought he had to say reacist cmment. so i told him that that was the whole point i hired your ass to fix my car cause im not a mechanic and what does your bad engine buildng has to do with me driving a toyota. after that he tried to intimidate me by calling his other frinds who own a shop. but as i told his friend about my situation he even offered tp fix my car for felix but he didnt wanna admit he was trying to scam me. so dot go to this place. service and altogether sucks... read more
