Stopped in for a warm drink while exploring downtown Burnsville. There was no line which was great (previously when we walked by they were packed), and the girls working were very hospitable. I ordered the Egg Nog Macchiato and my mom ordered the Hot Chocolate. The Egg Nog Macchiato was rich, sweet, fluffy, and delicious. The Hot Chocolate was rich and creamy. I stop-in every time I'm in Burnsville! I'm a realtor out of Weaverville but I am often in the area with clients and we always stop here. They love the small town setting. The food and coffee are always excellent but the real takeaway is the community. Everyone working here is so nice, even the customers. I often find myself sharing friendly conversation with customers and staff. This morning the owner stopped by every table and offered to refill coffees or just to chat. Breakfast or lunch, I usually have the quiche. This morning I tried the banana bread steel-cut oats and loved them! Topped with fresh bananas, walnuts and cinnamon. So nice to have the maple syrup on the side so I could sweeten it myself. read more

Great find in Burnsville, in the nice little town center I walked into this Coffee shop! Their Espresso machine is imported from Italy and looks like kind of a pinball machine or something like that , polished chrome and lights... actually the coffee tasted like it's directly from Italy also creamy cappuccino after a short wait. They have an upstairs too and seating outside, one time at lunch time they were pretty busy it seams like a lot of locals frequent this place and that's always a good sign. Their cupcakes look amazing and I m surly trying one next time. The people are very friendly and I had a nice conversation while waiting. The coffee took longer then if I ordered food. I went to McDonald's and came back and my coffee still wasn't done. Most of the staff are great and most of the time the food is pretty good. However today ended our 8 year relationship with this restaurant. My wife got us take-out today. Something I have been doing since 2012, before the current owners even owned it. Something we do every week while I vend at the local farmers' market. Today, they gave me a bagel that was not only charred and burnt, but looked like it had been hollowed out with a spoon. It was a weird half-bagel that was 100% burnt. I was honestly insulted at how bad this looked. It was clearly a dud bagel to start with, then they charred it. Everything Bagel with Charred Toppings. No thanks. Not to mention half of the "bread" was missing. I walked back over to talk to a manager. I first spoke to a young woman, who was delightful, and agreed to get the manager when I showed her the bagel. She could obviously see what the problem was. While in the back, the male manager/owner wrapped it back up, came out, and asked me what the problem was. So I opened the wrapper again as seeing the nasty thing itself was a better description than me describing it. Keep in mind I knew he had already seen the bagel and chosen to wrap it back up before coming out to me. The owner's response? "You don't have to be a smart ass." I showed him the nasty food they served me and he called me a "smart ass." Aside from not really wanting to be cursed at over a bagel I don't see how showing the owner the product his store is putting out is me being a smart-ass. I never would have let food that looked like that into my customers hands. So we are done with App Java. 8 years of business and this owner is willing to throw that away over a $3.00 bagel and the chance to use profanity directed at a customer. If you eat at App Java and ever have an issue, make sure you talk to the female manager and not the guy who likes to cuss people out. UPDATE: I have not heard from any management since this incident, however one of the employees has taken it upon themselves to try to respond. The general tone is that there was nothing wrong with the bagel except being "overtoasted" and that the incident and my response to it are somehow my fault. I would like to point out that "overtoasted" and burned are the same thing, and I would then ask under what circumstances it IS acceptable to refuse to acknowledge a bad product and curse at a customer. As far as the ranting responses to my issue, I would encourage these folks to watch the "Amy's Baking Company" episode of Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares. read more

Went up to Burnsville for a Galentines weekend and fell in love with this place. We went two days in a row, and if it we would have stayed longer we would have gone each day. The customer service was incredible, you could ask as many questions and they were very polite. The coffee was fenomenal. You know you're at a great coffee spot when you don't need to add sugar to the coffee because it's that well made. I had a large latte with vanilla flavoring both days. There is variety when it comes to the food. In a group of 5 picky women, we were all happy with it food. This place is a definite must visit if you're in the area. Went to order a chicken quesadilla which the first ingredient listed was chicken of course. The clerk there said there would be an extra charge for the chicken, $2.00? When we inquired about the charge for chicken, on a chicken quesadilla the clerk stood firm and she knew for sure there was a charge. Coming in was fine the girl that took our order was nice, very friendly, and outgoing however we ordered a Keylime pie, a blueberry muffin, blueberry bagel, and a BLT along with two drinks. The drinks were made quickly. And every time we were passed a bag with the pastries in it we were told to have a great day. And they still had to give us a sandwich with chips and a bagel. This happened two times kind of felt like we were being kicked out without everything we paid for. They give us the bagel and I start complaining about the BLT not being done saying how long does it take to make bacon and I wonder if they're killing it back there. Someone goes back to check on it for me and they tell me it's gonna be another 5 to 10 minutes when I had already been waiting for more than 25 minutes. There was a wait time for food and a sign that said it so when we were ordering we asked how long it would be and they told us that that wouldn't be the wait. We were the only ones ordering and the only ones standing at the counter waiting. Two male employees came out and slapped each other in the boobs In front of customers. People were coming in and out of the kitchen and I was just asking to myself who the fuck is making the food. One of the employees literally asked me if I'd seen the kitchen and I was genuinely about to walk in there just because of how long it was taking for a three ingredient sandwich and a bag of chips. During all of us one of them told me to stop acting entitled. I've been in North Carolina for a week and I've only seen a handful of people that match my skin color. Fantastic place! Went there twice in one weekend and enjoyed everything. We had coffee and sweets one afternoon and then breakfast the following morning. The breakfast was hearty and filling after a night of too much whiskey. Everything seemed fresh and reasonably priced. The upstairs is beautiful, clean, and well spaced out following COVID recommendations. Staff on both visits were pleasant and quick. I love the vibe, the cleanliness of the comfort areas used by the customers and the upper loft to relax and sit and work on a computer or have friends meet up or people enjoying a few moments of java joy. I was here over a year ago and I had the great pleasure of showing up again on May 8th, 2018. The women at the counter were helpful, friendly and even appeared to enjoy their work. I do truly enjoy this place and it's a place I can enjoy again and again. I only wish that Java Cafe and Desserts would reach out a bit more to the Vegan Community with at least a few more Vegan food (brunch/lunch) options and a few dessert options, that both Vegan and Non Vegans could enjoy. I know that they don't get many Vegans there, but As a person, who MUST be vegan, I would appreciate some options on that level. Otherwise, I have to say, inside, outside, topside and bottom view, I adore this quaint shop and when I am in the Ahseville mountain areas, if I happen to be close to Burnsville, you know I WILL be making a visit. I've been coming to Appalachian Java since they opened. Two owners ago, I think? Anyway...since Calvin & his wife took the reins, it's just a joy to stop here. They are open longer, with more (& better) food options. The place is always stuffed full of customers so we generally end up in their upstairs lounge area. The addition of Mr. Bob's doughnuts was sheer genius. And I'm not just saying that because Calvin has TWICE presented me with a complimentary box to share with my co-workers. Despite the sometimes overwhelming amount of people, staff has always been friendly & coffee/tea drinks are still constructed thoughtfully & with attention to detail. Enjoyed this cafe with my mom and sister today. They enjoyed their unique coffee selections while I had a delicious caramel frappe. We also selected the quiche, which was scrumptious. The service was friendly and helpful. We didn't dine alfresco since it was a tad cool but what a great option on nice days. Unfortunately, the grill is closed at 2pm so we didn't get to try the sandwiches we'd hoped for, but that was the only downside to this quaint cafe. read more

They have coffee, espresso drinks, breakfast sandwiches, donuts from Mr. Bob's, and a healthy lunch menu. I ordered the dirty chai and it is quite good. They have regular, soy, and almond milks. You can order a sweet or spicy chai. Mine was was a spicy dirty chai with almond milk and was delicious! For lunch, I ordered the Appalachian Salad which was MUCH better than I had expected! The greens were fresh, the chicken still warm, and the dressing was a nice honey vinaigrette. If I could have that everyday, I would be happy! The servers are sweet and helpful and attentive.
