Okay here goes. This is a beer store with taps. Not taps for growlers taps for consuming beer while you shop. Yes you heard me, you can peruse a giant bottle collection while you have some high gravity delicacy. They also have wine but I'm a beer nerd and wine is one of the things I drink, but I prefer the beer. As for the beer selection it runs the gamut from IPA's to Saisons with some ales and stouts between. I'd suggest you plan on at least 2 hours for the visit and at least $200 for shopping. The staff is knowledgable and the american craft and Belgian import choices are extensive. Keep your eyes open and you will find some real rarities. read more

Being a beer girl, I was already a little weary to plan a friend of mine's Bachelorette Party Wine Tasting as she is a huge wine fanatic. I scoured the internet trying to find the perfect place to host our group in Asheville. Everything was either way too expensive or free, and I needed something in the middle ground. I finally found Appalachian Vintner, and have never been more pleasantly surprised. I called the owners/brothers, Geoff and Charles, and told them my dilemma. They worked with me on price, and assured me it would be done properly. They even told us we could bring our own cheeses, olives, and meats to add to our event. Finally the day came for the tasting, Bachelorette Party in tow, and sure enough they did it UP! They set us up a beautiful seated area with glassware and water. Geoff chose a tremendous tasting menu, and gave us all kinds of interesting knowledge on what we were drinking. He always poured the bride's wine first, which I thought was a very thoughtful touch. It was the highlight of the weekend! The whole time I was thinking...you just don't get service like this anymore. What a relief!! Outside of this particularly great experience, Appalachian Vintner is a beautiful space. Lots of natural light, very clean, old creaky hard wood floors, exposed brick, and a tremendous inventory on carefully chosen and ordered beer and wine. Ask Geoff to recommend some things to you. App Vintner is my JAMS! Their selection of mix and match beers covers everything local in addition to a wide variety of national microbrews. They have a large, interesting wine selection with everything organized, clearly labeled, and accessible. I love checking in frequently to see what's new on the shelves! The staff is always courteous and willing to offer advice and information without the pushiness or pretense that I've experienced with other wine sellers. I personally haven't had a drink there, but I have seen the many folks enjoying the nice bar area while I'm shopping! This is a 'must stop in' store while you are in Asheville! read more

There are several wine stores in town, so how does one choose? For me, it comes down to three simple things: The friendly staff, the great regular patrons, and ability to consume on premises while sitting at the bar or at the couches and chairs around the store. Geoff and Charles Alexander are the owners of the Vintner and they are not only super friendly, but super knowledgeable about everything wine and beer. Tell them what styles and price point you are looking for and they will pick the perfect bottle every time. Besides a great selection of wines from around the world, the Appalachian Vintner provides an amazing array of tasty beers in bottles, off the tap, or even a newly installed cask system. Oh, did I forget to mention the cooler with 100 different beers or cold white wines??? And all the appropriate glassware to match? The remodeled space and new location combine to offer the best logistics in town for an enjoyable evening. There are several table and chairs, a huge bar for tastings and just chatting up your newest friend, perhaps a conversation on the couches in the quiet little nook?? Wherever you decide to enjoy your beverage of choice you'll be glad you did. What can't I say about how great the Appalachian Vintner is??? Great selection of beer and wine and other fun little drinking trinkets. They also have a bar which is really cool, I just wish the bar was more "bar-ish". I always feel like I am bothering them when I want to sit at the bar for a drink. We live within walking distance, so it would be cool for this to be our neighborhood bar for after work drinks, but there is just something about the atmosphere. Went there for the first time with my girlfriend and 3 other people. Excruciatingly long wait with not that many people there- Seemingly clueless and very unfriendly staff. Wanted to try a couple beers on tap and it was about as unpleasant as having teeth pulled. There are so many other options in Asheville- We won't be back. read more

Having lived in Asheville for over 30 years, we had never been to the AV. So, we thought we would give it a try. Good selection of bottle beers, not so much on tap. My big concern was that they refused to give samples of their draft beers. They gave some lame excuse why this was the case. When you consider that all other beer joints in town are glad for you to try their beers, I was surprised and disappointed at this policy by AV. Probably given the choices for beer in Asheville now I will not be visiting AV again. read more

Probably one of the best craft beer stores I have ever visited. Selection is exceptional, staff is very knowledgable, and they have a nice selection of beers on draft. They also seem to have a very good selection of wines, but I was browsing for beer when I visited. Highly recommend. Visited while in town for the night on the 4th of July. I'm a big craft beer fan and wanted to stock up for my week long trip to Jekyll Island, GA. I was not disapointed I stopped here to do so! Fairly large place with a clean, appealing, easy to navagate layout and a huge selection of craft beer and wine. Some craft beers on tap, however I was shopping and didn't really look to see how many taps they had or what was being offered on them. Ending up getting a cart and filling it up because I found so many beers I wanted to try. Prices were average on most,(around $8-$10 per 22 oz bomber, $9-$12 per six pack), but great on more than a few, (I found and bought several good bombers for around $4-$6). There were also a small but good selection of singles available for around $2 each. They had numerous local and simi-local offerings, which were great. The guy working, (don't remember his name), was friendly, knowledgeable of the beers they were selling, and very helpful in recommendations. I ended up spending over $100, but could have easily spent double that had I had the money. I didn't realize they closed at 9:30PM. I was there until aaround 9:45 shopping and not once did the guy working rush me or act like he was annoyed that I was keeping him open. In fact he never mentioned it once. It wasn't until I was looking at their website later that night that I saw the hours. Actually he was talking beer with me and recommending things after they should have been closed. And keep in mind this was the night of 4th of July. Now that is great customer service! Between this place and Wicked Weed, (which were the only two craft beer places I had time to visit), I'm sold and am already planning a beer trip to Asheville next Spring. Can't wait! read more

I was so disappointed with how we were treated yesterday. This business is great and 1 mile from our home. We are enthusiastic beer and wine lovers and thought we had found a local spot to buy craft beers and unique wine. My husband brought our out of town family here to buy several growlers and were greeted by the owner. When they asked to taste a beer before committing to buy an entire growler they received a response "I don't usually allow tastings but will allow it this once." When my husband asked to try another beer he received this response " this beer is too expensive to let you taste" and abruptly walked away from us. Unfortunately the owner lost two great lifetime customers and any family or friends we would have brought. I strive to support local small business owners but can't when we're treated this way by the owner! read more

Best bottle shop I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. They had 20 taps also Bell's Hopslam On Cask! Probably 1100-1500 bottles on the extensive shelving. Well laid out so much to see, drink, celler,, drink, buy, drink. Best bet grab a drink and get lost in all the amazing products. read more

A hidden treasure, Appalachian Vintner is only slightly off the beaten path. It is located off of Bilmore Avenue, one of the City of Asheville's main veins, directly behind Biltmore Fitness, Village Antiques, and City Mac. The Vintner offers free tastings on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with Saturday being the more extensive tasting of the week. All of the wines they taste are offered at a special discounted price. And speaking of discounts, they also offer discount prices on cases of wine and beer. Charles and Geoff, the proprietors of Appalachian Vintner, have been extremely helpful and friendly. Right when you walk in to the store, you will be helped by one of the owners, who have both retained an impressive amount of knowledge about wine and beer. The very large selection and space also houses an area to sit and enjoy a bottle (or two...) of wine or enjoy a pint of beer from their tap lines. I definitely had a great experience and will be making Appalachian Vintner a regular stop on my list of favorite places to sit and sip! read more

Wow what an awesome store big, open, inviting space, good parking 10+ tap lines with wine by the glass, sip while you shop WHAT!!!! how great is that (sip while you shop) The employees are nice and willing to help if they don't have it they will order it or have a suggestion of something like wise. I used to love this place and forgave their snobbish attitude because of their great selection of beer and wine. However, I will never go back because I experienced yet another bout of that same attitude. These guys never smile when I come in and act like they are doing me a favor by being in business. Sorry guys but your poor comprehension of customer service sucks and there are just too many places in Asheville to buy or drink beer and wine to tolerate poor attitudes and service. read more

App Vintner has a great selection of craft beer. They also have what looks to be a nice wine selection as well, though I have never browsed it. The store is huge and designed beautifully and features a bar with some nice selections on tap. Good customer service. read more
