Nice little hole in the wall spot tucked between a bunch of shops and restaurants in downtown AVL! I came here this past weekend after seeing an extremely long line outside White Duck taco across the street. Just in the mood for a small, quick lunch, saw Birdie's and decided to give it a chance. Slices are monstrously sized, and very reasonably priced. They also offer basic beer and wine, so we opted for 3 slices and shared a glass of wine. The food came out very fast and was piping hot. The slices were a bit greasy- we used some paper towels to dab some off, but they were tasty nonetheless and paired well with the wine. Overall, we had a pleasant and quick lunch here; the staff was nice and it's decent value for the price point. Would recommend. read more

This is most definitely the best pizza I have ever had and I have eaten a lot of pizza in my lifetime! It was worth going a little out of our way to get here. Located in the heart of Asheville, parking was a little scarce, but we were able to find a spot across the street. They were dog-friendly as they offered water and a biscuit to Cinnamon before we even sat down. By the way, Cinnamon enjoyed his pizza as well! So far as ambiance goes, the restaurant was a typical pizza joint with a friendly staff. You had to get up to order, that was a bit hard with my arthritic knees. Thankfully, the pizza was delivered to our table. We ordered "The River" Sicilian pizza. Although a bit pricey, it was gigantic and we had enough left over to take home for dinner. They have gluten-free pizza! And it was delicious! The bartender made a Gena tonic that was just OK but when I told him what I was wanting to taste, he made a special drink that was over the moon! The parking is an issue downtown it cost us 25 bucks to park in the structure because there's not many other places to park but I'm glad I found the pizza place it exceeded my expectations. read more

Best pizza I have had in a long time! Originally from Boston and live in Charlotte. Came to Asheville for a day trip and so happy we stumbled upon this pizza shop. The family who owns it is so kind and we got to see them all in town during the Thanksgiving holiday! Delicious slices for lunch. I loved the White pizza with caramelized onions. The River was also fantastic with chicken cutlet and vodka sauce. My husband kept it simple with cheese and pepperoni. I went in to get a pepperoni pizza and garlic knots to go. The pizza was awful:/ and hard to chew. They reheated sliced that had been sitting there for who knows how long. Looked old and dry. The garlic knots were a bit better but also, hard to chew. One of the staff members was talking crap about a customer that had just left and thought there was a spicy oil on his pizza that he loved and the staff said it was hot honey drizzle and they where saying how he was "dumb, and couldn't believe or understand it was hot honey" I was there for the interaction so they were bored and needed something to talk crap about clearly. read more

Absolutely the best pizza in Avl. As locals, we've tried almost every pizza place and Birdie's proves to be the best. I don't want to repeat their website description of the ingredients so just read but know it's true to the flavor. The mozzarella, tomato sauce, and crust make the perfect pizza. The staff are incredibly nice which tells me this must be a good work environment. The patio is dog friendly and they even make treats from their left over dough - which our dogs loved. Birdie's is hand down my favorite pizza delivery in asheville. The sauce to cheese ratio is spot on. The pizza holds it shape when you pick it up and they use some of the best pepperoni in the game. They have a full bar in back with a great cocktail menu for a pizza spot. DO NOT sleep on the brownie. LITERALLY the best brownie I have had. 4.5 stars. I spent the first 40 years of my life in NJ and NY, so I am absolutely a pizza snob, and it was one of the things I missed most when I moved to WNC. We went to Favillas for years, but it's really gone downhill, so we were on the search for a new place to get real NY pizza. Birdies is SO close, and will probably turn into our new regular spot when we're in Asheville. A couple very minor quibbles have me at 4.5 stars instead of 5. The sauce is a little sweeter than I'm used to (not bad, just different), and the crust was very slightly overdone. That might've been a one-off, though. There's tons of cheese, the ingredients taste high quality, the slices are huge and rolled out properly thin and chewy and when you fold them in half the grease drips just like it should. Flavors are rich. Practically a perfect slice. The garlic knots were also tremendously good. I asked for extra garlic and I think, no joke, they piled an entire head of minced garlic on top of them for me. A+, worth every penny, wish I'd gotten more. Parking's an adventure, but it's worth it. What an absolute gem. read more

Ordered a white pizza at the bar, bartender was great... however he clarified that our pie had pepperoni on one side and onions on the other half. I replied, no we want pepperoni and onions on one half and basically nothing but cheese and ricotta on the other half. Pizza came out wrong. Let bartender know that the pizza was wrong. My daughter doesn't eat pepperoni or onions and there was pepperoni on one side and onions on the other. Bartender only gave us credit for garlic knots to make it right, but didn't fix the problem and said it was my fault that I didn't clarify correctly what I wanted. I caught a glimpse of 3 tomato products being used (this is the number 1 tell) on my way to the back. This place is the real deal!!!!!!! (this is not a indictment of Manicomio's which I also frequented) I was transported back to a NY / Northeast pizza shop as soon as I walked in. Down to the gently worn in (great touch) parm and red pepper shakers. My goal was to get a reheated slice to have the total experience but my family was with me so we got an entire pie. The pizza authentic. Not overcheesed, perfect amount of sauce (giving that NY like orange hued melt), sauce slightly sweet, and gigantic. Three of us couldn't come close to finishing one. Everything else was just as good. The perfectly cooked meatballs with the garlicky sauce. The side salads (can't believe I'm talking about a salad in a pizza review). The cutlet walked by my table and looked amazing (next time). A lot of places in the area have tried to recreate a genuine NY slice and a grandma (roman, sicilian, etc) slice and always fall short in either the cheese, the sauce, or the crust. This place gets it all perfect. The last missing piece of the Asheville culinary puzzle (jk, we still need a decent Chinese food spot) has fallen into place. Pizza. I can breath easy now. read more
