Treatment surprises, poor results, and unprofessional conduct = avoid this place. Then here's the red flags that ended it: My last botox session started with me saying I wanted exactly the same as last time. Half way through a botox treatment, my injector Danielle shared she was attempting a brand new technique in new areas with new amounts that she just learned at a conference in Paris. I wasn't asked if I wanted to be a guinea pig. I said I wanted the same and got something new without consent! That made me feel deeply uncomfortable, and two weeks later the results looked different from any time before and *deeply worse than no treatment* at all. RED FLAG: Surprising a client who asked for the same as last time with a newly learned treatment technique the injector wants to practice! (My husband and I both went here, and after a "please ask before attempting new techniques on our faces without us knowing" we planned to return a final time to see if there could be trust moving forward.) I also asked to see my session photos for my visits to compare my face before and after treatment. The receptionist said "sure" a few times until over a week later eventually texting "this is my first priority, but it would actually take me a full hour of uninterrupted time at work to do, and I'm busy a lot now so I don't know when or if it could happen." RED FLAG: Clients do not have a way to view their dated session photos despite being told they do initially! At our next apt. (husband and I), I shared how those texts going from "sure" to "basically never" made me feel uncomfortable, and asked to use my phone for photos going forward (or take one on their iPad for their internal system and one on my phone) so I'd have a copy of my session photos. The receptionist *immediately left the room to get managers (plural!).* We left for good as the managers walked in because the environment was so deeply unprofessional. read more

I've been going to Appearance Care Center for about 6 months now. The team is consistently wonderful and I highly recommend. I am on my 5th treatment for laser hair removal on my Brazilian area and the results have been great. This is the only place I have heard of that offers prescription grade numbing cream. The pain is so much less than your typical Brazilian wax. I've never been burned or had a bad reaction to the service. The nurses always ask how I'm doing, offer stress balls during the most painful places, and are overall just kind. I've since added my full legs as the service has been so great. I recommend calling for pricing as the team sometimes will offer deals around holidays or special events. Or sign up for their promotional emails! Don't waste your time. I did NOT receive any services or treatment from the Maas clinic. The following is a review of my experience upon ENTERING the clinic as a 'walk-in' client. I found the following red flags: 1) Before I could be evaluated for Coolsculpting and Ultrashape treatment, the women at the front desk wanted me to sign an agreement not to post negative reviews of their services on Yelp, which is a huge red flag. For those of you reading Yelp, that means that ALL REVIEWS of services that you find here on Yelp are legally bound to be positive, and are therefore suspect. How is that even legal in the state of California? 2) They wanted me to sign an arbitration agreement so that if anything went wrong during my procedure I would have to settle with an arbitrator. In the state of California, this type of agreement often favors the doctor -- and the patient would have to pay for the doctors legal costs out of pocket. Talk about unfair! 3) Lastly, the doctor was NO WHERE to be found. Instead, I would have been seen and evaluated for treatment by medical technicians who were not even registered nurses. That is scary. Obviously, I did not receive services and walked out just as easily as I had walked in. Ladies (and gentlemen) -- If you go to a medical spa, be very careful. You may be waiving your rights as a patient. If you are looking for really excellent care, be aware that Yelp can be skewed. Call the clinic with five stars and ask if them if they will require you to sign an agreement not to post on Yelp and an arbitration agreement. If the answer is yes to either or both, then move on to another clinic. You will be safer. read more

I was referred to the Appearance Center through a friend for my IPL treatment. The business is really cute. Everyone is really friendly and knowledgeable. I had A LOT of questions since it was my first treatment. They offered to leave the numbing cream longer since I was a scare-dy cat. She broke down the steps of what happens to your skin with the treatment and asked me what my concerns were, etc. She counted down every zap so I was prepared. They went over twice and then all done. It wasn't as bad as I expected and with the promo I got, I got a peal and face serum (~ this serum is prob the best I've tried. it feels silky. Not oily) too for under $300!. That's a super good deal especially with the quality service I got. It's been a4 days since I had my treatment and most of my freckles are gone. I can't wait to go back for 1 more treatment. I think my face should be to where I would want it with 1 more. I highly recommend coming here. read more

Got a pricey $175 groupon for three laser hair removal treatments. Alright, so now everyone knows I'm a hairy ape and I suppose there will be guesses about where I needed hair removed. Well, keep guessing (braw-har-har). I experienced three different anesthetists over the four months that it took to do the treatments. I also signed up for another skin treatment (keep guessing folks) so I was there more then the three times. Alright, it was for the photo-therapy/IPL, The California sun is not kind to my NYC pallor. The space is a little confusing with the clinic upstairs while the MDs/plastic surgeons are on the ground floor. More then once I wandered upstairs to find no one there. They appeared eventually and they were super friendly. The three nurses that did the different procedures used lidocain cream, the cold air (which they let you hold yourself so you have no one to blame but yourself if you missed and blew it up your nose) and they use the Lumenis LightSheer laser. It hurts. It is not unlike a giant rubber band snapping right in your face but much harder. The pain however does not last and except for some redness, I had no side effects.. I've had laser treatments before for the same area but the results were better at this place. The space is modern looking, and clean. The people are nice but the retail prices are high. The IPL was reasonably price however and the results were good after just one treatment. Results vary with everyone, I know but aside from the place being a little hard to get to by mass transit, I was pleased. read more

I have been meaning to write a review for a while but well... I just haven't. I think the staff are really friendly and I've been pretty satisfied with their services (botox/dysport). I have only once had to go back for one touch-up, which is very typical for me. However, when I did go back for that touch-up, I was seen by Dr. Maas himself. He was amazing. His personality was totally calming and reassuring at the same time. That was then. This is now, today, a few days after I had a filler done in my face. OMFG, I have been getting SO much attention ever since, which ='s money well spent. I really do look much younger and my face is as plump as it was 10 years ago. I have gone here for 2 laser hair removal sessions. Both times were great. I have been to 2 other downtown SF clinics for hair removal. Appearance Care Center is above and beyond. The ladies who work there seem very knowledgeable, make you feel at ease while they're lasering away on your lady-parts, and are so friendly. The office space is professional and clean, but not in a cold/sterile way. The only complaint I have is with the parking, but that's with most of SF. There is a garage across the street, I just prefer street parking because that garage is used by the hospital and can get packed/crazy. Don't let that deter you. These ladies are terrific. read more

I wanted to wait a little bit before I write an honest review so I can see the real results of my first ever laser hair removal. Staff: Super friendly and welcoming, which was important considering this was my first time in a medical/spa type environment. My technician explained what I can expect for this session and future sessions. That made me feel comfortable throughout the procedure, not at all awkward. She asked me if I was ready before going in and changed the amount of power depending on my reaction. Procedure: I was a little scared because everyone I talked to (that did laser elsewhere) said laser was so painful and stayed painful and did not even work. My procedure took less than 10 minutes (for 3 areas) and there was literally zero down time. The machine here is so cool, it sucks up your skin so that in itself is a distraction and when the laser zaps, it doesn't hurt nearly anywhere as bad as I was expecting. Felt like a light rubber band snap. I did not flinch at all. Results: It's been a month since I got my underarms done and I have not needed to shave EVEN ONCE! I know they say it takes anywhere between 6 - 10 treatments, because each time only 20% of your follicles are destroy, but I cannot believe my underarms are done in only 1 treatment! The other areas that I got done, the hair is growing back in funny sparse patches, meaning it worked well! I can't wait to do a few more treatments and be completely body hair free. This is seriously a life long dream come true for me, getting called "werewolf" at the age of 8 (I know, WTF right?! Stupid mean kids!!) I cannot highly recommend this place enough to my friends and family! read more

I had such an awesome experience and wonderful results that I just had to review The Appearance Care Center. The staff were so friendly and helpful, especially Isabelle! Who would have ever thought getting needles put into your face could be such a pleasant experience? I had Restalyn (sp?) around my mouth and Disport for my deep wrinkle in my forehead about two months ago and I still look great (if I may say so myself)! It must have taken at least 10 years off of my appearance! They also plumped my lips and it just made them look naturally full. Fabulous! COMPLETE PROFESSIONALS!!! I will definitely be going back! I was referred to them by Josh Maniscalco from MedEstheticsRX during a treatment. He said I could use a couple IPL treatments and this is who he recommended I go to. I am in the medical skin care industry, thus am quite choosy as to who I will let perform aesthetic treatments on me. I must say that these women are very welcoming and extremely knowledgeable. They do a complete assessment of your skin's needs with this amazing camera program they have and it is free of charge! They do this to ensure you are not receiving unnecessary treatments and to get you to your goals as efficiently as possible without breaking the bank. ****Isabelle, the Spa Director, is very thorough in explaining all of the "need to knows," asks all of the necessary questions to ensure safe practice, and set me up with top notch post care products....not to mention, she's a complete sweetheart! I received an IPL treatment followed with the YAG Laser for spot treating areas that needed it. Pam was the nurse that performed my treatment and she was amazing! She explained step by step what she was doing and what I can expect in the days following post treatment. The fantastic post care product was Oxygenetix. It was immediately soothing, and actually felt very cool on my face, which is very welcomed with the warmth that follows the treatment. Not only does it soothe the skin but it also helps with the healing all while completely covering all signs of a treatment having just been performed! I am one day post treatment with loads of pigmentation that has surfaced and no one is the wiser! YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU! With those benefits... I have found my new daily wear foundation! I simply took 400mg of Motrin about 45 minutes before my appointment to assist with desensitizing the nerve endings as well as preventing any possible inflammation. They put a topical anesthetic on my face as well. I can say this was the perfect formula for a comfortable experience. I will be going back for 2 additional treatments with them to achieve optimal results. I also met the other nurse over there, Eugenia. She too was extremely friendly. The staff here is wonderful! They were very nice and cheerful. I came here for spaweek to get laser hair removal for my underarms. I was a little scared, and asked a few questions that I was concerned about, and they answered them with ease and calmed my nerves. The only reason I look one star away was because I don't think she did a very thorough job of getting the hairs. I know that for it to be "successful" you need to get multiple treatments, but it looked almost the same as when I went in. Also, I have a few ingrown hairs now, and I knew that there could be some "side effects", so its not their fault, but I just thought I'd also include that in case you were going to go get laser hair removal. read more

Finally got around to using my Groupon for a laser hair touch-up. The place itself is nice - newish office and equipment, staff is super friendly and attentive. I've gotten several treatments at a couple of other places and have never had any issues with pain, burning, etc, so thought this touch-up would be a breeze. Boy was I wrong, I was in excruciating pain during and especially after the treatment. Amy switched to the "smaller" laser on my ankles and likely neglected to adjust the settings and burned me. I have blisters and spotty burns on my ankles as a result, guess I'll be wearing socks for the next few weeks,, so not cute! The rest of the session was fine,, my legs and other lady parts were left unscathed - thank GOD. I still have one prepaid session, but likely won't be going back. I've had a great experience with laser hair removal overall and would recommend it to friends who hate shaving, but please please please avoid this place and if you have a Groupon, make sure they go easy on the heat. read more

I agree the staff is wonderful! I had an IPL treatment on my face and hands. Stephanie performed my treatment and did a great job. I've had many treatments in the past so I was prepared for the pain. It wasn't that bad actually and it only lasts a second or two. She also did the little veins around the edge of my nose! It wasn't as painful as you would expect. Isabelle has a great attitude and is very welcoming. I reccomend getting a Visia analysis(A special device that photographs your skin) with Isabelle before any of your treatments. It really helps to see what is actually going on with the skin. After you've had a few treatments then you can take more pictures and see the improvement! I am very happy with my experience here. I received IPL treatment by nurse Christina. I am impressed with her professionalism and friendliness. The IPL wasn't painful to me...thanks to the local anesthetic cream applied to my skin and esp. to the blasts of cold air on the area being treated. I went in last week and got a really great tech named Erica... she explained everything to me and used ice and numbing cream to make sure the experience wasn't as painful. She singlehandedly took my rating from a 1 to a 4. I'd give it a 5 if it wasn't for my dreadful first impression. Pre-treatment, Abby takes her time to really listen to you and address any concerns. She never rushes you. During treatment, she's very thorough and professional and puts you at ease. She's AMAZING! But the reason why I will be sticking with this place for my future IPL sessions (rather than trying out other places) is their customer service. I had an issue I brought to their attention, and management addressed it immediately and fairly. I'm always so nervous about getting anything done to my face or skin in case I have a negative reaction, but the team at Appearance Care Center is so experienced and professional, they have all the tools to make sure you have the best experience possible. I am a first timer when it comes to laser hair removal so I didn't really know what to expect. I found a Bloomspot deal for 3 laser treatments and decided to give it a try. Not only was this place in a really cute area but it's extremely clean and the staff is super friendly. Every time I've been in they greet me with a smile and offer water or tea. I never have to wait and the appointments have been really flexible. The actual laser treatment was almost too good to be true. I went in with no expectations, assuming it'd be a little painful (from what I've heard of laser) I was shocked that I felt no pain and Mia was really great about explaining the process and answering all of my questions. The entire appointment took less than 15 minutes! After 2 sessions I've already noticed the difference in my hair growth as it's thinner than before. I'm hoping after the 3rd session I'll notice more of a change but for now I'm extremely pleased with the results. Shaving once a week is so much better than once every other day. I went to the Appearance Care Center for the first time a couple weeks ago on recommendation from a friend. The office is absolutely beautiful and the staff could not be more friendly. I went in for a peel but I had tons of questions about other treatments to address my skin's problem areas. Mia was very informative and patient with me throughout my endless questioning. I was a little concerned about looking like I spent the weekend in the tropics without sunscreen after my treatment but my skin never peeled and I had a lovely glow for weeks!
