I've seen Dr Applegarth and others in his office thru the years and I've had great care and never had any problems till now I went to get results in December from a biopsy and made a follow up appointment for April 22 2025 and I received a call to remind me of appt on Friday from Valpo office so I called back to explain that I've never been to Valpo and I don't want to go there with LP office 4 miles from my home the girl says it was a clerical error and she could not reschedule me until July your kidding me right I kept appt then I actually found my appointment card which had LaPorte office so I called back to complain more and she says again the girl that made my appt was no longer with them and nothing they could do even see me till July so I now have an appointment with new Dr and will be going there to get my information so very disappointed Nancy Wilber read more

Go anywhere else. Cut it out yourself. Don't go to Applegarth. They removed a large lump from my just inside my hairline, or at least that's what I paid them to do. It was grown completely back in one month. I went back in and was told not to worry about it. Just come back in a year and we'll see what we should do!!!!!!! No accountability for an incomplete removal. Full billing. Poor customer service and no communication on billing issues. Go anywhere else. Cut it out yourself. Don't go to Applegarth. It's sad that this business will surely fail based on their poor performance, patient care, accountability and follow up. After they old me to come back in a year I went to Pinnacle. My 14 year old daughter had an appointment today that she has waited for 2 months. My mother took the time out of her day to take her to this appointment. The lady at the front desk refused to let her be seen because she did not have a physical copy of her insurance card. Mind you, this is not the first time she has been to Doctor Applegarth. My mother and I both have been going there for years. My daughter emailed the insurance card and the lady said that she was not receiving the email. When they tried to reschedule, she offered one day and one time, which did not work for us. The lady then said I'm sorry I cannot help you there are other people waiting in line. (Which was one person, likely trying to just check in.) I am tired of these doctor's office treating their patients poorly. We will not be rescheduling the appointment and shame on that woman. Learn customer service! And additionally, having to book an appointment out for 2 months is unacceptable! read more

My son's skin lesion removal was fine, I think. I went also to be seen for concerns and received no full body scan despite my request. All of my concerns were dismissed without the doc even looking at my issues. He prescribed one med for all. I spent many months paying off the bill at $50 monthly and then I was outrightly SUED for the $150 balance. Cost me almost $500 to settle the lawsuit the day I was "served" and called Applegarth's attorney. I recommend Applegarth/Sandin to nobody, ever. Yep, my fault for not paying the balance quickly enough for sure, but really? They sued me over $150 as I was paying down the balance. Wow! Way to serve your Valpo community during a pandemic and job losses left and right. read more

Ive been going to Applegarth for a long time but they've really upped their game. I called, worried about a growth on my back and a little worried. Not only was I able to schedule the same day, it was minimal waiting, and I had a great PA immediately take care of my skin and concerns. Bing, bang, boom! Excellent customer service! read more

I have seen Tom Sandin many times over the years for many different issues and always received excellent care. Very friendly and gave effective treatments. Very sorry about other's bad experiences with the staff, but I have never had a problem. They seem friendly and efficient to me. Just keep in mind it is a doctor's office after all... and none of them are like a restaurant. read more

Why anyone uses this place is beyond me. First the reviews are terrible on both Yelp and Google. Our family used them in 2013, and aside from being rude...they apparently are terrible business people. Just had the Porter County Sherriff come by our house to serve my wife with papers for a $39 bill that apparently they've been trying to collect on since our 2013 visit. Really? Really?? No emails, calls or letters, but a law suit for $39 now seeking $311. Okay. So I looked into it. First, name spelled wrong, address was wrong. These people are idiots. What a waste of the tax payer dollars sending out our hard working Sheriff for something so frivolous and what a phone call could have taken care of They probably had that wrong too. DON'T USE THESE PEOPLE. If they have as terrible reviews as I've seen posted, and their support staff is this bad, I don't know why you'd want to deal with these folks. Bad business needs to go away. Yikes! Only one star. I feel like you have to work hard to get this low rating from so many people. I feel that this may be a little unfair but I feel I need to share after reading so many other bad reviews. I requested an appointment online. They gave me a call and left a message to set up an appointment within a reasonable time. I didn't get to my phone in time so I called back. I was on the phone for 20 minutes and transferred to 4 different people. Still, no appointment scheduled. They had given me an open time and date in the message which worked for me so just put my name in! They couldn't figure out who had called me! Apparently that's the only person who can set an appointment for me because I'm a new patient. That makes no sense. In the background I could hear my first and last name being repeated in their attempts to figure out who'd originally called me. Awesome, sounds like a HIPPA violation to me! I finally just told them I'd call back. I'm not going to. If I can't even make a simple appointment I'm very concerned about everything else. I should have done my research first and not bothered with them to begin with. I feel like I dodged a bullet. read more

Would not recommend this place , after seeing another physician that helped me repair what this office refused to help with ..I had a procedure done a simple removal of a mole ..which this would have been my 3rd time going to them for this ...when I would go in they would look me over and find areas and say we can do a simple punch removal/biopsy of this ...trusting them and the fact they knew what they were doing was my first mistake ..the last visit that had me go to a plastic surgeon bc of them ..they did another "simple punch removal " except they hit a nerve and an artery ..I first had said it hurt but went with it and during this my area had started bleeding to the point the NP really didn't. Know what to do other than to stitch up ...so thinking this is all normal went home and after the numbing wore off ..the area was hurting extremely bad but again figured it would get better ..next morning the pain continues and I called the office (mind you this is a procedure less than 24 hours old) and got the front lady and she had said no one was in the office on fridays (why then would you do procedures the day before ?) but she referred to another office ..that office had contacted dr.applegarth ( again my whole family had been to this office and no one has saw this man the many times we were there) Dr applegarth said no one would be able to see me and just to go ER ..this is when I found a plastic surgeon that would see me immediately (very well known one in our area ) and he quickly saw my area and said this is what these doctors do ..they remove everything and don't know what they are doing ...end result ..this surgeon fixed it and the area remained numb from Applegarths office just doing a simple removal that hit an artery and caused a lot of damage ..to top it all off ..this was during precovid ...this office took my family to court over 200$ that we had try to make arrangements with but they wouldn't take payments Only take what we owed bc I had my son seeing the doctor over his acne and we owed 85$ and went to get the script for his next meds and they refused to take payments on that and said he can't have the meds until bill is paid ...mind you this med has to have monthly bloodwork so I guess just immediately stopping it is fine ...and yes we have insurance and had been making payments but then COVID hit and we went to making sure all necessary bills got paid End story ...applegarth office will hire an attorney and take you to court over less than 200$ of a bill Before this got an attorney involved we tried to explain the situation but they wanted nothing to do with us and we ended up finding another doctor for my son and as soon as we said where we were coming from ...the office person had immediately understood our situation...plz plz make sure if u go here to question all the removals they wanna take off ...and if you have a bill make your payments regardless bc they didn't care what we had said they were unwilling to work with us Will NEVER recommend this office to anyone read more

I just went to Dr. Applegarth office. They asked for insurance card, then form to fill out. The receptionist asked if the insurance was mine, I said no it was my wife's (who works at Porter Hospital, where Dr. Applegarth is associated) and we have their insurance, so I had to put my wife's information including her social security number. I have only been married 2.5 years and don't have that memorized. The receptionist indicated that they needed it, I said "Okay I'll get it to you". She said: "I need it before you go in or you will have to pay like you have no insurance". I questioned that, and told her that my wife was working in the ICU today and I could not just call her for that. I offered my social security number, that would not do. I was questioning her, since I had to pay the co-pay and I have insurance why it is necessary, she told me: "In case you don't pay": I held my composure, but I am sure my face was red, and hers was too. I walked out, to never walk in again. She must have thought that I was a thug/crook/criminal, which I am not (a businessman in clean business attire driving a new car). Or, that is their method of doing business. I feel that is totally unacceptable, and no one wants to be embarrassed in a waiting room full of other people. read more

Dr. Applegarth did a poor job on a mole removal, leaving a part behind. I was not aware that this was possible because it was not explained to me. When I called in to ask about this, I was told I needed to come back and pay for another appointment. Instead of working to rectify anything, Dr. was dismissive, defensive and patronizing. I also believe that he was being dishonest in his defensiveness. I was completely disgusted and will never go there again. I hope if you decide to go there you receive more professional services. I had a painful cyst located on my back and had an appt scheduled with another dermatology office but wasn't able to get in for two weeks. I tried to cope with the pain but the cyst was becoming increasingly painful and angry! On a Friday, I called Applegarth Dermatology to see if there was any chance of getting in for an appt (I had never been there before) and the person I spoke with was very accommodating to my needs and scheduled me for the same day in their LaPorte office seeing Nurse Practitioner Tricia. Tricia was very compassionate in her care with me and although painful she was able to at least release pressure from the cyst which helped the pain somewhat! Tricia also prescribed medication and gave great directions on how to dress the wound! I have an appointment scheduled to go back in two weeks to have the entire cyst removed. I also had a reaction to the antibiotic and called the office to let them know. In no time at all I received a call back from the office letting me know a different prescription was called in for me, along with specific instructions regarding this antibiotic. I feel the entire office from the front desk person, the Medical Assistant and Tricia, NP were very professional, accommodating and empathetic to my situation. They deserve 0 stars! I signed up for a Yelp account specifically to write a review RE them (usually I dont take the time to, but I felt compelled in this case). For a less than $100 bill-- they take you to small claims court/sued and are served with papers from the sheriff!! Then you incur lawyers fees, which increases the bill by 300%!! We've been experiencing unusual financial hardship these past few months and there was nothing they could to do to work with us or lessen the payments! I've never, ever been felt like I was a criminal or treated this way by any medical company/dr. Office! The staff is incredibly rude...when I just tried to discuss my bill (calmly, I thought, by my standards of talking to cable companies and other places)... She hung up on me! Although Dr Applegarth and his PA were wonderful...I will not be going back because of the horrible billing practice and rude staff. I truly believe they intend to send their patients to collections and court for additional money! So I have been going to Applegarth as a patient for over 7 years. Apart from the fact that every appointment I have ever had has been at least one hour late, they now have really push me away. I need a refill on a prescription during the pandemic and they will not issue it without me coming into the office. I will also state that I researched a medicine that would have been very helpful to me, but because they don't have a relationship with the rep, I can't get it. Go somewhere else. I am!! read more

DO NOT GO HERE! The office environment has terrible customer service. I wish I could review the professional ability of the clinical staff, however we couldn't make it past the inflexible front line staff. Chris, the "office manager", displayed rude behavior towards my husband and daughter; who was hoping to be seen in the office. Chris, in her lack of professionalism proceeded to "un-invite" my daughter as a patient due to Chris's rigid and inflexible (and somewhat BS) policy of having a hard copy of insurance card at time appt-please note, we had all necessary insurance information. Horrible billing department!!! Never sent me a bill and then sent me a nasty letter threatening collections for not paying "repeated billing attempts". Bull. I can't pay a bill I never recieved and I KNOW they didn't mail me anything. Then when I call to ask why I never recieved bills, she tried to make it my fault for not just sending in payment based on my insurance summaries??? Those aren't bills!!!! How about DO YOUR JOB and I'll gladly pay when I get a real bill. Never have had an experience like this. Makes me wonder if the Dr.s even know what is happening in this office??? Rude. That's the word I would use to describe the office staff here. They asked for a copayment from me but I met all of my out-of-pocket medical costs for the year. I don't need to pay for any co payments or doctor visits for the rest of the year. I explained this to them several times. However, their office staff said I should of brought "proof" with me that states this. NO other doctor that I've been to has ever required me to do that. I told them they could call my insurance to confirm this.. They said "NO, pay the office visit upfront and we will leave the fee/credit on my account. I told them they should of clarified this with me ahead of time. Then I called my insurance myself (while waiting for my appt) and my insurance said I was correct and she would fax over a letter stating this. The office staff would not let me go back for my visit because they were still waiting for "proof". wow! "Sorry you missed your appt time while we were waiting for the fax." Now I can't get in until next year! I will NEVER go back there or recommend this place to anyone. Super rude ladies. read more

Don't know that I have ever been talked to by anyone, much less a physician, the way I was talked to by Dr. Applegarth. So relieved to see the reviews posted, as I figured there was no way anyone would believe me if I had told them about my experience. I listened to this man yell for several minutes until he finally hung up the phone in anger....he had slipped off the ledge and became unhinged. There was a part of me that almost felt sorry for him....how much stress must he be under? Until I read the reviews and saw this is typical behavior for him. I will be reporting him to the State Medical Board...not because of his behavior, but he put a stipulation and conditions on writing a prescription. Could have been an issue to find another physician during this trying time, but thankfully within a two day time-frame, we had a new doctor and the prescription we needed. None-the-less his actions were unacceptable and more importantly unethical behavior for a physician, especially during this pandemic. I want to say thank you to Erin Long NP! I went in for a small blister like spot right next to my nose she took biopsy and decided it was basil cell skin cancer and I needed it removed. I went in for the results and they got me in the same day for removal because I was leaving for winter vacaion in two days she removed it and stitched so good the scar will be right in my nose crease!! If I could give 0 stars I would. Long wait, rude secretaries, never actually seen a Dr just the assistants. Billing to our insurance didn't go thru and we were never notified until by they're lawyer which at that point was a $600 bill. Called our insurance about it and the office never billed our insurance. Now the insurance has paid the bill and we still have to pay they're lawyer fees when all they had to do was notify us and make one call to the insurance company. To top it off 3 of my coworkers had the same problem. Trust the reviews...there is a reason there are so many bad reviews. Never had an issue at any drs office like this. read more

I scheduled an appointment for the Dr. to check my bumps on my arm. I asked if they take my insurance, they said yes. They did not tell me they were out of network, I ended up with a bill that I could not pay because I only get disability once a month. They took me to court after 6 months and it ended up costing me $455.28. Instead of my $40 copay. Horrible billing practice. I am never going back and will not recommend anyone go there unless they get the correct information before they leave the office. Bad customer service. read more

Never call to remind EVER and only take cash or check. Went in for this last appt and they canceled it w/o calling me. The lady at the front desk rudely said she would get the call list to tell me who they spoke to when they called to cancel- and when she got the list it didn't show that they ever talked to anyone. Had the WORST experience yesterday at Applegarth's office. I made an appointment one week ago to see physicians assistant Lindsey to get a cyst removed on 12/26. Upon arrival I was greeted with little to no enthusiasm from the receptionist. They were only running a few minutes behind-no problem. When Lindsey walked into the room I quickly realized that the cyst removal would not be taking place as Lindsey only had me down for a 10 minute consult and the removal surgery takes 50 mins. (I understand that mistakes happen and the receptionist who confirmed my cyst REMOVAL is the person at fault here for not informing me that there must be a 10 minute consult prior to surgery, a consult which I have already had ). Lindsey says "I can get you in before the new year, just go up front and they will make the appt. for you." (This detail is important because I am physically unable to make it to their office hours after NY due to my long work commute.) So I go to reschedule for a couple days later and the same disinterested receptionist says "Lindsey is booked until Jan 14th...wait then she's on vacation...looks like Jan 22 is the earliest available". I said she literally just told me 1 minute ago to my face that I could get in before New Years. No effort was made to find Lindsey who had walked into another patients room. I said don't bother rescheduling, I will book elsewhere, I can only make it before New Years. This is the worst part: They billed my insurance for this unnecessary 4-minute consultation which I had already had. After I politely reminded them that I was a customer of 10+ years and that I would not have even come in had I known no surgery would occur. At this point all they had to do to retain me as a customer is waive the consult fees from my appt. which lasted all of 4 minutes and only happened due to a communication ERROR by their receptionist. Please avoid Dr. Applegarth's crew of depressed monotonous Debbie Downers. Also if you want to see the good doctor himself, well you better be prepared to wait 2-3 months and that is no exaggeration. read more

Worst office staff imaginable. Rude in person and over the phone. Can call to remind of appts, but never called to let know insurance didn't pay all of bill. Only found out when they sued college student and parent, when parent in another state and never had any dealings with dr or office. Checked court records. Applegarth sue happy. Docket only listed first 200 of clients he sued. Won't take a credit card, won't tell you if you have a balance, but quick to sue over $20, added attorney's fees and turned it into a $400 bill. I wouldn't go to this fruit cake if he were the last doctor in the world. Avoid at all costs, unless you want no communication, sued, and your parent sued because they carry the insurance. read more
