We arrived about 6 in the evening and although the venue was only half filled, all the tables were already reserved. Luckily for us (and the restaurant too!) we needed to get out by 7pm and it so happened that there was a table free until then. It was good of the head waiter to check if we were happy to vacate by 7, as it meant we got to eat there (and they turned over an extra table.) Because of the short time we had, the food came quickly. It was good to see there was good communication between the front of staff and the kitchen to make this possible. The food was simply a delight. For starter I had the beet-root infused smoked salmon salad. It was an unusual way to smoke the salmon but the flavours were beautiful. For mains, I had their special of the day - whole plaice. While presentation was nothing special, the fish was cooked to perfection with the meat just cooked, full of flavours and juices. That alone stole my heart for the evening. The food was on the heavy side, with lots of cream in the leeks, for example, which could put some people off, but it is great for those looking for a bit of extravagance. The portion size is also generous. The letdown came after the wonderful starter and main course, as my dessert was plain and lacking in flavours. The New York cheesecake was too sweet and lacked the 'cheesy' flavour. Shame, but it shouldn't hold you back from visiting this wonderful pub served by really friendly staff, and eat your heart out along with local ales from Hog's Back Brewery down the road, or a selection of wines.

It's particularly popular with families, judging by the number of mid-size luxury SUVs in the car park - the pub certainly appears to be in the executive commuter belt. Finding an available parking space was therefore quite tricky; if there aren't any just park on the nearby approach road to Hankley Common Golf Club. They've a small bar inside which leads into a larger rustic dining room that's been tastefully refurbished. There are four real ales available, with one being locally brewed. Andwell's Red Mist was a pretty decent pint. Outside, there's a sizeable covered dining area, patio and garden, with a children's play area by the car park a decent distance away so the noise and disruption is limited. The seasonal menu is full of British classics, with the mains including beer-battered cod, chargrilled rib-eye steak and pan-roasted Gressingham duck breast. Portions were generous (see the photo of the amount of peas that came with my cod!) and everything was tasty. Summing this place up I'd say its look was in keeping with the above-average affluence of the area, but at its heart was still an old, warm and welcoming rural pub.

They have a fabulous wine list, with super chilled wine (this is so so important, and so many restaurants get this wrong!), and beautiful, hearty portions of food. In summer I can imagine that sitting out in the large beer garden would be just a delight. in fact, i am going to ensure that i do that one afternoon/evening in the summer next year.
