Took care of my husband with vascular dementia for the last 6 months of his life. Caregiver/manager, Shelley, is awesome.

From the outside, it looks very new, there are several outdoor spaces for the residents that look comfortable. The interior is quite welcoming, and there are several group rooms, there is an exercise area, hair spa, and daily activities. The rooms were clean, and all of the staff that I interacted with were great. During training, they took care of us, with breakfast and even left us with spa items to take home. I made sure to get information for relatives late.

In August, we expressed interest in Lorien Harmony Hall for our father, who really liked the place when we toured. In October, Lorien's Executive Director, Victoria Rosier, decided to deny my father's admission based on an arbitrary clinical assessment that he needed sub-acute rehab first. They did not acknowledge current medical records, or clinical staff attempts to work with Harmony Hall for direct admission. The appropriate action would have been a peer-to-peer clinical discussion to clarify any questions. However, as the clinical case worker put it "they just don't want to take him". Our family invested $4500 in the community fee, had countless emails with Lorien over the course of two months only to be denied by email for an acute incident. When I told the Executive Director, Victoria Rosier, how disappointing this was, she said she was sorry we felt this way and our $4500 check was waiting at the concierge's desk. The entire experience was devastating and left us and our loved ones without planned support. While I believe the sales director, Chelsea, tried really hard to advocate for our family, I do not believe she has the support of her leadership team or the freedom to make executive decisions. She often had to get confirmation from her Executive Director, Victoria Rosier, to finalize any agreements. My experience with Victoria was not pleasant, she was often rigid and lacked the compassion expected of a healthcare executive. She also did not show the ability to be strategic to achieve a common goal, which was helping our father find as safe and welcoming home. My only advice to anyone is if you are looking for a compassionate team that will work to serve your family's needs, look somewhere else.

Front desk / phone staff needs major training on etiquette and customer service. My wife's…read moregrandmother lives here, and was expecting a grocery delivery from a service yesterday. Grandma called the front desk after delivery confirmation, and the staff told her nothing was delivered. My mother in law called this morning following up on a phone installation that was supposed to occur in Grandma's room, but the staff has not yet swapped the phones, which they assured us would be completed before today. The woman was very rude to my mother in law, and not at all empathetic towards the incomplete service. I called around 6pm this evening after receiving a call from Grandma that groceries still have not arrived. As I was trying to explain what we had been told, the woman on the phone kept interrupting me and saying "there is nothing at my desk." As I continued to complete my part of the conversation, the woman very abrasively said "ok, no, I guess you will talk." Really? I paused in disbelief. As I tried to ask clarifying questions, the woman became more irritated and kept cutting me off. I asked the process of how they handle perishables, and she said they go immediately to the room, but with covid, they currently hold all non-perishables for 48 hours. Look, I get COVID may change your basic function at the front desk, but this Grandma hasn't been able to have more than 2 visits, and they had to be outside, over the past 6 months. The monthly expense of this place is reasonable, but the poor customer care is unacceptable. I don't care if 15 people call for the same thing. Put a smile on your face, and empathize that someone who's care you are entrusted with, did not get a delivery that was expected yesterday. I'm not asking you to resolve it, but even the local fast food chains have better customer service. Very disappointed. Please find a role for this associate that is not people facing, because my confidence in her ability is non-existent.

I have experienced Brighton Gardens as a family member (14 years ago), and as a volunteer (now and…read morefor the last 4 years). Sure, I volunteer there to do nice things for other people, but honestly, my primary reason is the way I feel when I walk in the door. In so many ways, it's like coming home and being on a cruise ship, all at the same time. The facility is spotless, well lit and beautifully furnished and appointed. My history with Brighton Gardens gives me a rather unique view. I get to see how quality staff members choose to stay there for long periods of time. Four examples come to mind, each of them caring, patient, thoughtful and hard working people, as are most of the staff that I come into contact with. During normal business hours, June will usually be the first person you see. Not only did she remember my dad from 14 years ago, but I could easily see that her fondness for him was warm and genuine. June is often the face and voice of Brighton Gardens. It takes a special kind of person to do this job properly. June makes it look easy. I bet it's not. Elizabeth is the Executive Director. I didn't know her back when, but what I see now is a calm, warm individual. The way the facility is run tells me everything else I need to know. Tracy was my father's care manager. When things or people displeased my dad, he was never shy about telling me, but Tracy could do no wrong. Folks, that's like a magic trick. Tracy is still there, still friendly and patient, doing the job that requires maybe the most direct contact with the residents. We were lucky to have her at my dad's side, and Brighton Gardens is lucky to have her there still. Sheila was and still is the Activities Director and Volunteer Coordinator. My dad wasn't interested in activities as such. His passions, among others, were teaching and writing. What did Sheila do? She gave him the resources and a time slot on the activities schedule to lead his own activity, a poetry class. That creativity (I would never have thought of that) and the above and beyond attitude are clear indications of the content of Sheila's character. In the present day, I see the activities portion of the organization from a different perspective. This is where the cruise ship analogy is most pertinent. There is always something going on. The large number and wide variety of activities ensures that there is something for everyone. When I want to volunteer some extra hours, finding an empty time slot can be a challenge, and that is as it should be. Brighton Gardens is what it is because of a strong team effort. The details and fine points are attended to with love and compassion. The residents who live here are lucky indeed. When my time comes, I hope I'm as lucky as they are.

While I understand the demands placed on healthcare staff, we experienced a lack of consistency in care, limited attentiveness, and poor communication when asking reasonable questions. At times, interactions with staff felt dismissive, which added unnecessary stress during an already difficult situation. More importantly, we had concerns about whether care protocols were being consistently followed, particularly given the seriousness of my mother's medical condition. After my mother was transferred to the hospital on April 13, a significant medical issue was identified that, according to her physician, could have become much worse had it not been addressed when it was. This raised serious concerns about the level of monitoring and care she received prior to her transfer. In contrast, the hospital staff demonstrated a much higher level of attentiveness, professionalism, and compassion. I am sharing this feedback, as I also shared my concerns directly with facility staff, in the hope that improvements can be made in patient care, communication, responsiveness, and accountability. Families place tremendous trust in these facilities, and I hope this feedback leads to meaningful improvements in the care provided to future patients.
