I was…read morelooking for a different pizza spot than my usual go to's and GMD&P had good reviews, some making pretty bold claims. I went to order online and realized there is the common convenience fee tacked on. I decided to order the old fashioned way, go there in person. Then I can browse the store while I wait. It has the usual stuff you'd expect to find in mini markets. But there are hidden gems in the dusty corners like a vintage bottle of Trader Vic's Mai Tai cocktail mix. I didn't check the price but I'm wishing it still had the price tag from 1975 on it. Made me think of the Werewolf of London drinking a Pina Colada and his hair was perfect. Another good find was a dusty bottle of Crème de Menthe. It made me want to look up the recipe for a Grasshopper. I don't know if these old mixer's are for sale or just museum pieces. The sandwiches look pretty good, I'll have to try one another time. Overall the veggie pizza was pretty good, but a bit heavy on the veggies. I generally like fewer toppings, but everyone is different. I suppose in the future I could ask to go light on the toppings. But I'd rather they be generous rather than skimpy.

The pizza is always top notch--consistently delicious with great flavor every single time. It's the kind of place you can count on, and that consistency really matters. If you're in the area and craving a really good slice, this place is a must.

The kind of spot where everything looks a little unpolished, but that's exactly why it works. The marinated meats are the standout trays packed with seasoned cuts that look ready to go straight onto a grill. Same with the prepared fish, which looked fresh and heavily herbed. It's very much a "trust the process" situation here. Inside, you've got shelves of imported cheeses, spreads, and pantry items, plus a surprisingly solid produce section. Not huge, but fresh and well-priced. Service is efficient more functional than friendly but they'll point you in the right direction if you ask.

There is also a deli counter with prepared foods featuring both cold and hot foods. The quality is similar to that of a restaurant, albeit a bit more oily. They also grill meats onsite, making it very convenient for takeout meals and for picnics. The quality of the produce is quite good, too. Staff is friendly and helpful. The parking lot is small but serviceable because customers don't tend to remain in the store for long, so turnover is fairly regular.

The owner was an absolute delight--chatty, warm, and sweet, and he honestly reminded me of Belle's father from Beauty and the Beast! He made us feel so welcome and even brought us a sample of his homemade tomato basil soup, which was delicious and tasted truly homemade. The turkey and avocado sandwich is apparently a favorite, as is the pastrami. I'm a vegetarian, so I ordered the avocado and cheese, which was fresh, simple, and satisfying. What really makes Berge's special, though, is the atmosphere. It has that cozy, old-fashioned neighborhood feel where you can settle in, have a good sandwich, and actually chat with the person behind the counter. Such a sweet little La Cañada institution. We'll definitely be back!

John seemed to know every customer who walked through the door, and he immediately made me feel welcome. He offered me a sample of the tomato soup, which was light, fresh, and absolutely delicious, and took the time to explain the menu. While I was looking everything over, he smiled and said, "You skipped lunch, didn't you?" I was shocked because he was right! Somehow he just knew. I ordered the pastrami sandwich, a cup of the tomato soup, and something I never do a Grape Crush. It just felt like the kind of place where you have a classic soda with your meal. Everything was wonderful, but what really stood out was how comfortable and cared for I felt. It wasn't just a meal; it was an experience that left me feeling genuinely nourished. If you're looking for great food, warm hospitality, and a place with nostalgic, feel-good vibes, I highly recommend stopping by.
