I stayed in site 66 which is mostly secluded, but you have to "pay" for that seclusion and great view. There is a pretty decent hill and trail to get to spot 66 so if you carry a lot of gear it can be a hassle (you can also drive around to the vault toilets and climb up from there which is shorter but still uphill). I am a total camping newb, so every time I book a camp site at a new location I am a little nervous for how it's going to turn out and I always learn a thing or two. We were on site 49 with 8 people + a baby. We did not realize how tight of a squeeze it would be for all the tents, but we managed to just squeeze on an 8 person tent, 6 person tent, and two little 2 person tents. Site 49 is close to waterfront (1-2 minute walk), and right behind it is a large mound that you can climb for a beautiful view. The campground guests were so friendly, told us where we can buy firewood and park our extra cars. The location is beautiful, you really feel out there. Would love to come back for two nights next time. read more

Arapaho Bay Campground was the destination for my first ever camping trip here in Colorado! ++ It has some great sites quite close to the water! ++ The camp sites are large and could def fit a couple tents. ++ Great access to trails such as Monarch Lake (just a bit further up the road) and even some closer hikes along both Grouse Creek and Irving Hale Creek that feed the lake! ++ If you're into fishing: this is your place! Great access and a boat ramp! ++ Doesn't seem to be crowded! +/- Rate's aren't bad for sites: $16 for a single site and $32 for a double site. -- Many of the trees were cut down (we stayed on the Morraine Loop) due to beetle infestation. So, unfortunately, there was not much shade. By 8am we were cooking in our tent. -- During my visit I did see a bear, from a distance; always a good reminder to be alert and keep food items secured! I would def come back for another camping trip! Though I think I'll give it a few years to see if some of the tree life returns. **Pro Tip: Sunsets at this campground are AMAZING! Def bring a camera to capture those last rays of light over the lake! This is also a great destination for ice fishing in the winter. read more

We really enjoyed camping at Arapaho Bay. Our campsite was pretty private with beautiful views of the nearby mountains. You can definitely tell that the trees were hit by beetles, but there's a lot of new growth (little baby trees!) We were close enough to other campers to hear kids playing, RVs driving in and out, and one loud, mildly concerning argument about whether guns kill people (presumably as opposed to people killing people??) but overall it was quiet. From our site, it was about a five minute walk to get to either of two different shoreline spots - one rocky, one sandy. There were a few people and families out fishing and boating, but it was not crowded at all, especially for a mid-June weekend. One evening we walked up to the Roaring Fork trail and wandered for maybe 45 minutes without encountering a single other soul. I would have loved to follow the trail further, but our little tripod dog was getting tuckered out. As with every camping trip I take in the summer, I was reminded that no matter how hot it is during the day, it gets COLD at night in the mountains. Layers are important.On a related note, you have to be brave to swim in the lake without a wetsuit... Lake Granby is very deep and very cold. Prices, bathroom/outhouse facilities, trash, water pumps, etc. were all standard based on my experiences at various campgrounds around Colorado. It took us about 2.5 hours to get here from North Denver, including some mild traffic on 70. Most of the drive was beautiful and we even saw a moose on the way up! read more

This is a quiet and beautiful campground about 40 minutes from the west entrance to RMNP. But what makes this campground stand out above others is Paula, the campground host. She is very friendly, extremely helpful, and will do anything to make your stay pleasant. She saved the day when we had trouble with our solar panels and she seems to love people. There are so many great hikes (Roaring Forks, Monarch Lake, and overnight hikes galore) in the immediate vicinity and you are off the beaten path so it is quiet. read more

Grand County, Rocky Mountain National Parks, (RMNP)and Lake Granby- We went to a friends house this weekend in Grand County - Didn't know exact locations as county's go to Yelp it? So I'm throwing them together all in one- Lake Granby- Was our first stop to fish and enjoy Colorado's biggest and deepest bodies of water and still cold/ We caught good size lake trout- Next - Adams waterfalls along the east inlet trailhead (RMNP) or Arapaho county - Just a 0.9 mile easy hike up well placed stone steps - I could see dead and burnt pines and aspens that were affected by the mountain pine beetle.,,(over 3.4 million-acres of Colorado forest land from 1996-2013) there's an overlook at the top onto the falls- There are 2 other trails along this one for the experienced hiker- There's about 16 trails I looked up on this part of the RMNP (Rocky mountain national park ) - Final stop- The town of Grand Lake for sight seeing and food- We spent a couple of hours exploring the local shops and restaurants- There's of wild life I didn't know we had in Colorado Including elk, moose, and big horn sheep-and I did get the chance to spot a baby bald eagle - Overall very beautiful mountains and towns to bring out the nature in this city girl!! read more

I almost don't want to Yelp it, because I'm afraid all you people (yes, I said "you people") stealing the awesomeness. Whatever, though. You seem cool enough. I guess we can hang out (just don't tell us to quiet down at 10 pm and don't snag the best campsites). Arapaho Bay Campground is not only HUGE, it sits on a HUGE lake. Lake Granby is massive, perfect for all boats from water-ski speedboats to rickety old canoes. You can even rent pontoon boats (not at the campsite, but around the lake a bit). The campground itself is made up of three loops. The furthest in sits on a jetty, and is closest to the boat ramp. The middle loop sits on an inlet, where there's an AWESOME jumping rock (about 15 feet high) and a nice place to lounge in your innertubes. The loop closest to the entrance isn't on the water at all. If you're going, be aware that the Pine Beetle damage is pretty severe. The middle loop is mostly clear-cut, so bring shade canopies if you have them. The other two loops are less barren, but that might change... best to pack your own shade. There's also an on-site General Store in case your ice melts fast in that hot hot sun. Oh yeah... wear sunblock! Even the most olive-skinned of us got burned up there. Mosquitos aren't bad, even though you're right on water, which is nice. Bees aren't really a factor either. The camp hosts keep the place neat and tidy... including the 'throoms. No small feat at a campground this big. Nice job! They will get on you if your dogs are off-leash, though... so be careful. It's not an issue down at the waterside, but they need to be tied up when you're at your site. There are a few choice sites that super primo... but I'm not going to tell you which ones they are. The campground was great. We stayed on the Moraine Loop section of the campground. It has beautiful scenery, and you're extremely close to the water and boat launch. Monarch lake is about 1 mile from the campground, which is the best lake to go out on if you have a non-motorized boat. The Little Moose camp store is wonderful. It has a variety of items, and the baked goods are delicious. Plus, the lady who runs the store is so nice. The only reason for the lower rating is the host of the campground. She was NOT nice. We checked in and asked if we needed a tag to hang from the dashboard, and she didn't answer me. Then, when I asked if we had anything we needed, she responded, "Well I'm waiting for you to move your car." On the day we were checking out, she came around screaming at everyone at about 10 am that checkout was 1. We knew some other people who were thinking about staying another day, but hadn't decided. It was 8 am, and the host said that she would come back at 10 am and she needed an answer. Further, when it was noon, and we were almost packed up. She came around again, telling us we only had 45 minutes to leave. And, she was never nice. Always rude. I've stayed at many other state and national campgrounds. The people who work there are always nice because they want to be there. This woman is not happy to be there. She makes everyone who stays there uncomfortable. If she doesn't want the job, I know many other people will. read more

This campground is located 9 miles down a dirt road off of the Lake Granby. It was awesome scenery to get there and the perfect location if you want to hike around monarch lake or to cascade falls early in the morning. It IS $20 which I think is steep for a place with no shower or running water in bathrooms. You also have to pay for Arapaho Bay pass if you don't have one. (They accept the National Parks Annual Pass). However, it is quiet and relaxing. It IS a long drive down the dirt road so be sure to make reservations and get your supplies before settling down for the evening. There is also a super little cottage down the road which serves coffee and homemade cinnamon buns and muffins. She only starts around 8:30 so we had to wait until after our early morning hike to snag some. Delish! Only complaint...a group of people were not observing quiet hours....we love partying too...just host them at our HOUSE and not a public campground. ALSO - across the main road and down about 2.5 miles is willow creek campground. ADORABLE view but not as many places to hike right from the campground. read more

We stayed in the Big Rock loop and is was nice and wooded. It was close to the put in spot for boats and we loved spending time on the lake as well as the quiet of the campground. We saw 2 moose and 3 bald eagles while we were there. One moose walked right through our campsite! Overall a great trip! read more

Damage to the door lock inside and out. This is so sad. Camping was always scared, places where people respected one another, and each others property. What's happening? The host Bob is the biggest thief around. We arrived at 2:15 the day after our first nights reservation to have someone unhooking in our sight. Then I was shown a sign on the bulletin board that if you don't show up by the checkin on the second day you give up your sight. This is the biggest bunch of crap I have ever seen. No where in the app is the policy stated. Then Bob hides behind the policy like a coward. If this is the way they treat people ten expect the same in return. read more

(Aug 2014 - aaack - loop 1 has all the trees - but someone bought the dilapidated log building style cabin resort across the dirt road, and their admittedly small generator runs all night. Some Friday and Saturday nights also has a live band firing up. This campground might be fine during the week if you're in the northwest corner but weekends are flat out.) (My original post from a few years ago follows...) Two good reviews on this page are accurate, however--things have changed a bit. I used to love this campground, but pine beetle kill has taken out the trees. In 2009 and 2010, dead and dying tree removal altered the campground. The first loop still has a lot of trees but is not on the lake, be ready for a real walk anytime you want to find the shoreline. The other 2 loops are further up the road, directly on the lake and used to be spectacular, but now are barren, rocky, exposed to wind, sun and rain--and not so special anymore. Fishing in Granby is pretty darn good. Zebra and quaqqa mussel larva is confirmed in this lake, your boat must be inspected coming in and leaving, and your boat legally may need something like 30 days on the trailer before you can launch in many other Colorado waters. read more

The scenery of this campground is gorgeous! I had a great time camping there for two days with my family last July! The bathrooms were well kept and the camp manager left us to our own devices. Be aware of the mid-afternoon thunderstorms that may pop up and secure your tent. The tent pad we stayed on was not very substantial for the tent stakes. read more

Amazingly Beautiful. We were in the roaring forks camp loop site 61. right on the lake. The view was simply breath taking. surrounded by mountains . the high light of this trip was the fact that a mother moose made her home there with her young calf, watching them roam around and play was nothing short of heart warming. read more

great camping find near Grand Lake! very easy to reserve a spot, much easier than rocky mt. national park and a bit more private. plus, a very short walk to the lake. we even saw a moose!! we stayed 2 nights the week before july 4th holiday,- which turned out to be an ideal time to camp. less crowded and very quiet at night. very nice, hard-working hosts - bathrooms were kept clean and overall peace was maintained day and night. loved our spot, #14! it was a bigger space, corner of loop, had some trees for protection from sun and winds. good for hanging a hammock. very few mosquitoes. table and fire pit landing separate from tent landing - both were flat spots to easily set up and enjoy camp. other spots that looked good; 61 (near dam), 15 (good size for group), and 72. spent the day at nearby Grand Lake- great place to rent a paddle boat or pontoon. delicious ice cream spot right by the beach. well stocked grocery store at edge of town, right side as you enter main street. read more

The campground itself was stellar! The lake glistened in the sun, it was clean overall, and it was quiet and serene. We stayed on the Moraine loop, which, apparently, was our first mistake. We pulled into a campsite that was perfect- it overlooked Arapaho Bay, and had by far the best view in the campground. There was a little note on the campsite, which read: "Occupied: write date of departure: 8/17". It was the 17th, and the campsite was empty, so we assumed the occupants had cleared. Perfect. We started to unload, when a man comes running up to us (keep in mind, just two young females unpacking to camp), screaming that we can't stay there. He claims that he was there first, and as the site we chose was first come, first serve, he occupied it. We pointed out that he had nothing to claim the site was his, and he claimed that the "occupied" sticker should have been enough. The one that said the date of departure was the same day of our arrival. We said we wouldn't move because there was nothing to prove that the site was his, and he said, and I quote, "The bottom line is, I'm the manager, and if I say you can't stay here then you can't stay here. Either move sites or get out." Obviously, I will not be returning. He claimed he was doing work on the site, yet we saw him sitting in his chair, or fishing all day. This manager is the most asinine man I have ever met. If you're considering Arapaho Bay- please do, but stay away from the management at all costs. read more
