This establishment is one of the better places in downtown for a more quiet, adult conversation…read morecompared to the rowdier places on most of George Street. The ambience is great, with a very dark colour scheme pricked with little lights scattered through the bar. Decent selection of wine and cocktails as well as beer. Not necessarily pretentious, but a little bit classier than other local venues, and someplace where you stand a better chance of being able to hear your conversation partners. I enjoy dropping in, and would be inclined to use it as a "first date" location for drinks, given the intimacy of the setting.

We've had a terrible winter/spring but finally summer came and the pedestrian mall in Water Street…read morewas open. It was a warm evening and the sun was out and so I and my friends decided to spend our evening at The Rose & Vine at 206-208 Water Street. We started with 2 people right after 5PM, then more friends came and right about 7PM there were now 6 of us. We were seated at the far end of their outdoor patio in a long table with a couple of sofas. First bad experience was that one of my friends was told that they ran out of wine when she asked. It was early evening and they no longer have wine. Must be good business. Around 7:30PM, 5 more friends came. One of the 2 long sides of the long table had no seating so I asked the waitress for extra chairs and she said there were none. Fine so we waited. Then the small table next to ours became available but instead of having my other friends sit at that separate table, we took 3 of the chairs, put them at the vacant long side of our long table so that our friends can join us. The female waitress didn't tell us this wasn't allowed. There was also more than enough space to navigate even if we added the extra chairs so we weren't creating a safety issue. Then came barging this male waiter who immediately berated our group saying that because we added the extra chairs and making us a big group, the restaurant can be shut down by the authorities. Most in our group are in our 50s and a couple were in their 70s, all of us are professionals and the elderly couple were distinguished members of our community. The male waiter could just have told us in a polite manner that the restaurant does not allow adding more chairs. Our other friends could just have sat at the other table, which was what happened anyway. I told him when he was walking away that he didn't have to berate our group about the business being shut down and instead just tell us that adding the chairs wasn't allowed. We have no trouble with that. What rudeness! We were an Asian group and I just hope it wasn't because of that he thought he could disrespect all of us. The other members of our group couldn't say anything and we were all just in disbelief.
