Popular pub in the center of water Street in downtown St. John's Newfoundland. The menu for me was somewhat limited, but I had the turkey noodle soup, which was quite good. Unfortunately, the bar was out of the two draft beers that I was interested in. I ended up getting a Coors light, which, really sucks if you think about it, since I'm from Colorado. If I ever go back, I need to learn more about Canadian beer. Still, it was a great place to stop for lunch while I walked and shopped Water Street. read more

Review is for food only - since it was a take out order. Steak flatbread - pretty similar to a Philly cheesesteak in flatbread form - except the cheese was melted atop the bread instead of in liquid cheese form. Tasty. Came with fries which were lackluster- some burned/fried too long. Hungry human breakfast - came with toast, beans, sausages, ham, bacon, two eggs done the way you want em and home fries - again, the home fries were pretty fry and over overcooked, so was the ham. The bacon was crisp albeit the bit greasy, the rest were just fine. Breakfast items are available 11pm to 2pm. The restaurant is open 24 hrs, which is nice for late night revelers. read more

Beautiful location in the downtown core. Clean and a great vibe. I'm still thinking about the club sandwich and onion rings I had there a week ago. It was perfection!!! The bread seemed home made and the bacon was not that precooked stuff but the clincher for me was the mayonnaise and I'm desperate to know what brand they use now that I'm back on the mainland lol. We stopped in for breakfast, my wife had eggs benny which she said was not bad no where near the top of her scale, I had a regular 2 egg breakfast with bologna, home fries and toast with a side order of toutons, which the waitress forgot about, no big deal it happens. it finally came out when I was finished my meal which consisted of 1 slice of toast and a thin slice of packaged bologna 2 eggs and processed home fries a meal which you might expect at a hospital cafeteria not a sit down restaurant. And all this for $72.57 with tip. If your looking for a pricey cafeteria meal this is your spot, if your looking for a good down home meal I recommend finding another place. read more

Stopped in on a rainy Sunday really to just get out of the rain. We asked to be seated outside under their "tent". Rain was literally coming in and soaking the table but we didn't want to take up a table inside. We ordered two overpriced Guinness and then we were told it was company policy that in order to sit outside we had to order food. Mind you, there was about two other tables outside as one large group moved inside due to the rain coming in. And it's not like anyone was waiting for a table out there. We have been telling him all night make me a sweet drink with vodka and it's the best thing we've ever had. We ask him for a spicy drink with rum it's the BEST thing we've ever had. He makes these drinks on the spot randomly with the craziest combinations of things and the 7 drinks we ordered are the best drinks we've ever had and I guarantee youyou will never have anything better. I am not a huge fan of super crowded places and that is a main reason that I came in this bar, also someone indicated that they had the best poutine in town ! here is street parking as they are located at the Water street the main hub for the downtown St. Johns. it is definitely best to walk here if possible. this is a 24 HOURS spot, it is perfect for that late night drink and poutine. we came by and the bartenders were super! they let us pick even the music to play in the bar! they are super friendly, definitely the best feature of the bar is the staff. STEAK POUTINE- OMG this was definitely the best poutine I had in the entire town, we went to a couple of other spots for the poutine but this place cooked the steak perfectly, the sauce was just perfect and onions so caramelized. just amazed with the poutine, a lot of sauce and cheese, definitely enough to share at least 4 people can share one of their poutines. if you are looking for some amazing poutine, LOOK NO FURTHER, come over here and try their poutine. read more

To start it off, the waitress was cold and unfriendly. The highlight of the meal was my ice, cold Guinness, and the white sangria. I have the shrimp and lobster boil, which was supposed to be seasoned with old bay seasoning. It was not seasoning at all it was tasteless. The corn was like rubber, and the lobster was like rubber it was, a terrible example of a shrimp and lobster boil. My wife had the cod tongue that was supposed to be crispy but instead of being crispy, it was kind of rubbery, and the sauce was not very good. That came with it when I mentioned to the waitress that my lobster boil was missing the old bay seasoning she just said yeah s and just ignored it and that was it. Unbelievably slow and incompetent service . Several severs and the hostess walked by our table of six just sitting there several times and never said anything. Finally the waiter shows up. "Are you ready to order?" Yeah dude - we've been ready for 15 minutes. 20+ minutes go by. He shows up again to clarify my order. 10 minutes later he brings the food for the table. My order is wrong. On our 2 week vacation in NL we spent a day and night in St.Johns visiting multiple restaurants on water street and the Celtic Hearth was hands down the most memorable and amazing experience we went twice, 2 men made this experience what it was, first meeting Cody who served us, smiling, happy and funny, we ordered mussels and scallops which were amazing and a margarita that made you think you were on an island down south not Canada, as we finished up we got to meet Terry another server bartender who we chatted with and the reason we returned later to challenge his drink making skills! Blown away with the talent and variety of drinks Terry can make, my beer drinking boyfriend is still talking about the drinks and friendliness we experienced from him and Cody a week later! I came here initially to give a 5 star review, specifically of Terry; however, I feel as though I was significantly overcharged. We had 5x double gin + mix, and two beer. What should that cost, at most? Maybe $100, $120 TOPS? My bill came to $205 including a 15% tip. Arriving in St. John's late in the evening, my daughter and I went out to grab a meal. At 11 PM the kitchens of the places we set out for had already closed their kitchens. We were directed to the Celtic Hearth by one of the bartenders we spoke to. Turns out, the Celtic Hearth serves food 24 hours a day. They have a late night menu. The place evokes a sense of being in a pub in Ireland. Lots of dark wood, brass and cut glass partition. The late night selection are limited, so I ordered something I normally don't eat. Chips. Actually it was Irish curried chips (fries) with cheese curd. Amazingly delicious peasant food that I highly recommend. read more

We came here with a large group on a Thursday late night seated at several tables. This is a British type pub with dark interior leather seats and booths. Very cozy and great for drinks, appetizers or full on meals. Our servers were friendly and attentive and got everyone drinks quickly. There is a good selection of local brews. Only thing was they ran out of iceberg on tap and couldn't replace the keg fast enough and we ended up having to order other drinks in the meantime. We ordered a whole bunch of shareables. Buffalo wings, honey garlic barbecue wings, the party platter with chicken fingers, fish tacos, nachos with chicken and regular nachos. The food was great and tasted fresh and delicious. It did not taste like a 24 hour restaurant more like a regular restaurant. We were so hungry we did not have a chance to take pictures and everything was eaten up. This place was exactly what we needed one night due to the fact that they are open and serving beer 24/7. The food is really nothing to write home about. Typical pub fare. They have a full bar with about 6 beers on tap. As an IPA drinker from Asheville the Calm Tom from Quidi Vidi really hit the spot. I mistakenly thought she said "cod tongue" when she was telling me what they had on draft so I had everyone cracking up when I ordered two "cod tongues". The service was impeccable and it's nice to know the Hearth is always an option no matter what time of day. Here's the scene: it's the morning after a rockin' Newfoundlander wedding, which capped off a solid three nights of drinking, and I've got some time to kill before a mid-afternoon flight. The few and the proud who are still around and conscious gather together and meet up for breakfast at The Celtic Hearth, looking to soothe our pains with grease and a full belly. Located in the bottom portion of Bridie Molloy's and fronting on Water Street, The Celtic Hearth is a cozy Irish pub with your typical dark stained wood, somewhat low lighting and booths in various nooks and crannies. There isn't a large crowd, and we're seen to promptly by quite possibly the friendliest server I've ever had. Over the course of the meal, we would be endearingly referred to as 'my babies' and it felt like I was being served by a pepped up version of my grandmother. Awesome. I had a hankering for some Hollandaise, but we were informed that the breakfast menu was done for the day, but there were breakfast foods available at their Sunday brunch buffet. I'm fairly leery of buffets due to their often mediocre food and off textures from sitting in warming trays, so we sent one of the guys to scout it out. However, after getting a positive report back on it, we all ended up ordering that. Upon an up close and personal inspection, there was a very impressive spread here - a cold salad bar with potato, pasta, and garden salads, as well as coleslaw, fruit and dressings. The breakfast portion of the buffet consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, and what I was informed were toutons. Now that I knew what they looked like and what they were (delicious lumps of fried dough) and they were at my easy disposal, I was all over them. The lunch portion of the buffet consisted of pretty hearty, traditional Newfoundlander fare - turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and turnips, Jiggs dinner, a meat pie, some sort of tomato and rice casserole, and a big ol' pot of gravy. For plate number one, I loaded up with the breakfast foods and gave my hashbrowns a slathering of gravy, as I believe that gravy should be available at every meal of the day. After taking my hefty plate of food back to our booth and start stuffing maw, my suspicions are confirmed that the textures are a bit off, but it's not too bad. The eggs are quite good, as they have mushrooms, onions and peppers mixed in with them, and the bacon and breakfast sausage do their greasy, delicious thing. The hashbrowns are a fantastic gravy delivery vehicle and while a little on the tough side from being in a warmer, the toutons are sweet and pleasant, and taste like a soft donut, minus the filling. Round two consisted of me piling up my plate with turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, and some of the meat pie, and naturally everything got a healthy dose of gravy. Obviously, I'm using the term 'healthy' in a figurative sense here. While pretty basic foods, they're done well, and much better than many a turkey dinner that I've suffered through at various weddings in my day. While nothing fancy, the Sunday buffet at The Celtic Hearth was pretty enjoyable and it made for good hangover food, and allowed me to have breakfast and lunch at the same time! On a trip to St. John's famous George Street we decided to give The Celtic Hearth which is the restaurant side of Bridie Malloy's pub. My experience here could be summed up as fine. Just fine. The ambiance was what you would expect from an Irish Pub. Clean, kind of dark. There was a fun halloween display at the front--a good photo op. The menu was also what you would expect - traditional Irish and Newfoundland pub fare. Shepherd's Pie, stew, fish and chips etc. We started off with nachos which were good although I would have liked a little more salsa. They used fresh jalepenos and multicoloured corn chips. My recommendation would be to order a traditional dish. I ordered the club sandwich against my better judgement. I wanted to be able to share with another member of my group. But I was bored with it. It's really my own fault because a club sandwich is not really all that exciting. There was black forest ham on it but It didn't really add anything in my opinion. I would rather have a little more bacon than the ham. I had it with fries. They were hand-cut, which I liked. But they were a little soggier than I would have liked. My aunt had the spinach salad, that looked to be a little small for the price. A few more in the group had the fish and chips. They seemed to really enjoy it and it looked delicious! I think if I had my time back, I would have went for that instead. My sister had the chicken and ribs and really enjoyed it. I found the prices a little on the higher end for the type of food on offer. The service was good. We stayed and went up to Bridie Malloy's at the end. The service was good at first but our waitress stopped coming after we got our food. The atmosphere was nice and it was pretty quiet on Monday night. Came a long way to try some Newfoundland pub fare . . . First meal, I ordered cod tongues as an appetizer to share ($11.00). They came lightly battered, with a small pot of sliced green pickles. Ummm, sort of fishy tasting, some more gelatinous than others. Pickle helped. Nah, they can keep this on the Rock. For the main I ordered the Jiggs dinner pie: local cabbage, turnip, carrots, potatoes, peas pudding, salt beef and savoury dressing in a gravy, baked under a puff pastry with two golf-ball sized potato croquettes ($14.75). A local in the group said it was not how Jiggs dinner would traditionally be served. Oh well, I actually liked it; reminded me of leftover pot roast, gravy and veggies stirred together, and reheated. Comfort food on a Monday night. The croquettes were nicely crisp fried, but the potato centre could use more seasoning, and butter or something so they are less dry. A couple days later, I ordered the lobster Mac and Cheese ($19.75) for dinner. It came with a slice of garlic toast. The rich cheese-cream sauce and pasta was well done, but quite a small portion. What was most deficient was the lobster. Not much lobster for the price - had to keep searching for tiny pieces. As a comparison, Nautical Nelly's in Victoria, BC serves twice as much pasta baked in the dish last winter with noticeable chunks of lobster for about the same price, although the lobster was briny. Still looking for the perfect lobster Mac and Cheese outside my kitchen . . . . Others in the group over two nights enjoyed a variety of entrees, and most were a hit. The couple misses were the lobster (too small for the price and considering we are on the Atlantic coast) and the A Taste of Asia Salad (taste and freshness at issue).
