1/2 Classic Roast Beef & 1/2 Crispy Chicken Sandwich
Rose P.

Me and my grandmother were back on our way home. We were thinking Arby's. For it being a Friday night, I wasn't expecting too much anyway from a fast food joint. So we went through the drive-thru and worker gave us some time before asking what we wanted. I told the worker that we needed a moment (grandma couldn't decide what she wanted). Grandma had me ask for the specials and the worker didn't seem thrilled at all. So we finally decided on the 2 for $6 deal. We pull around and window was wide open with worker filling drinks. I didn't think anything of it and another worker comes to the window and processes grandma's card at about average speed. As I'm waiting for my order, all the workers inside seemed to have the vibe of that they didn't really care whether or not they were there. From what I can see inside they were leaning up against things almost as if I hade one of those stereotypical waitresses from them 70's-90's films about to say "what ya havin?!". I really mean that's what I was seeing. Worker hands me my bag and gives me a very vague and generic parting words. Overall, I get it's a Friday night and you're probably only working there just to make a paycheck. But at least have a somewhat developed customer service voice and attitude. Like I could've gotten better service from Ben Stein. 2.5 stars in my book.

It's no secret that I'm a big time fan of Culver's. While I'm not quite willing to call it a…read moreperfect 5-star experience, it's one of the few chains where I consistently have a good experience. I was in Shelbyville checking out a couple of cars. My friend and I decided to grab a sandwich. As she knew of my fondness for Culver's, she immediately suggested this location. Culver's is a national chain with local ownership. There are certain things you can always depend on - interior and exterior design is generally consistent, Butterburgers, friendly employees (the entire recruiting vibe emphasizes family and a supportive environment), and a menu that is generally consistent from location to location. This location did seem to have a larger than usual parking lot. Culver's tends to do well with accessibility features, and they do offer outdoor tables (you order at the counter inside or the drive-thru). I'd always had a fondness for Culver's as my mother used to sell them their food in Central Indiana. However, during my cancer journey I found that butterburgers became a food worked on my stomach even during chemo. I have no idea why, but it was consistently true. I'm not particularly fond of the fries. Sometimes, I get a combo with cole slaw. Sometimes, I'll splurge on onion rings. I frequently just get a double butterburger with my unsweetened iced tea. This visit was quite positive. The employees were friendly, efficient, and quite professional. The food was tasty. The iced tea actually had ice in it (the Culver's by my house has a tendency to hand me an iced tea that has no ice - I have no idea why.). This was a quick visit. I would easily return. I always think Shelbyville is way far away. While I wouldn't say it's close to my Lawrence home, it's actually a pretty easy drive and a cool little city to visit.

Don't get me wrong there was plenty of parking but you could tell they are still dealing with the snow. I walked in and was immediately taken care of. I placed my order got a number and sat down. My food was out before I even had time to check my email and texts. My burger and curds came out hot and my milkshake was super thick. I always eat my curds first as eating them cold is not my favorite. So I enjoyed them, then I tried my shake, still too thick to drink. Burger, deluxe butter burger. It was very good. Starting to cool down a little. Shake still thick. Burger was perfectly yummy. Finished it at the table. Wiped my mouth. Shake still thick so I took it with me. I finally got to enjoy the shake without trying to suck a golf ball through a garden hose, about 20 minutes into my drive home. As always still my favorite fast food place.

Describing this as a place for comfort food sets expectations perfectly for this restaurant on the…read moreoutskirts of Shelbyville. It is a simple, hometown Midwestern style spot that reminds me of the places I used to go with my parents in the 60s and 70s. The diminutive, squared-off standalone facade centered in a small parking lot exudes that homey vibe. And the interior is exactly what you'd expect based on the exterior. The simple but well-kept tables and booths are typical of Mid-American diners. It was our daughter's birthday and comfort food was what she wanted. There were five of us (four adults and one child) so we called ahead. They were gracious enough under the circumstances to set aside a larger 6-person corner table for us to allow us to be seated right away despite it being a relatively busy Friday evening at 6 PM. Our server, Wendi, did a great job taking care of us. She was prompt and attentive without being intrusive. The menu was chicken-centric as the restaurant name clearly implies. One intriguing side item that seemed to be a signature for them were the fried biscuits. They were essentially fried pieces of dough sprinkled with powdered sugar with apple butter spread that we used as a dip. They were memorable and made nice starters. All of our mains were, of course, chicken dinners. Dark and white meat ensembles were both available. There was a nice variety of sides and our party opted for various combos that included onion rings, green beans, cottage cheese, baked potato and mashed potatoes. And of course, American-style dinner rolls accompanied each meal. It was all very tasty. I'll also note that their coffee was reasonably good. My wife, our 4-yr-old granddaughter and I were able to split one three-piece dinner making this a fabulous value. The total bill with food, drinks, tax and tip was $85. At just over $21 per adult, it was a good value by today's standards. I'll gladly give this place five stars. They're unpretentious, deliver exactly what you're led to expect, and they pull it off very well. We'll go back if we have the chance.

We pulled in around 11:30 am and the place was already filling up. I grew up in Indiana and this place just screams Indian chicken decor. My wife and I are in our later 50s and we were the youngest couple in the joint. Service? Wow, almost as soon as we sat down our server was giving us menus and taking our drink order. Food? Quite possibly the best fried chicken I have ever had. Go here, order chicken, enjoy and tip well!!!!! This was after dining at St Elmo the night before. St E was mid

We occasionally go to Shelbyville for some issues. We have driven past King Gyros and finally stopped in for dinner. We both had the regular Gyros on a pita sandwich, shared a large order of fried mushrooms and a soda. The Gyros and the fried mushrooms were delicious (to be honest maybe better than where we use to eat in Chicago). The meat was piled on! The sauce was tasty but not overbearing (did not hide the taste of the meat). The pita was fresh and thick enough to hold the sandwich together, just terrific. The fried mushrooms were cooked perfect, crispy on the outside and moist and firm inside. Also reasonably priced. One of the best meals we've had since moving to Indiana. It is a family-owned business, and they are warm and friendly. The eating area could have been a bit cleaner. But after tasting the food, there it really didn't matter. (I will still stand by that it's too expensive for what it is.) Staff were not overly welcoming when we walked in, more like you have to tell them you're here to order and then they greet you. The kitchen staff were also dropping things on the ground and the cashiers were having to remind them it now has to be washed, which I did not like that they needed that reminder! My husband and I split the loaded tots, overall these were underwhelming but he liked them. We also shared the large Italian grinder. This is a great sharing size. Flavor was good and satisfied my craving. I did like that the brought our grinders out on two separate plates since we had mentioned we were sharing it! Overall, I probably won't return anytime soon as it was $80 for four people to eat, but hey pregnant lady wants what she wants. ‍
