Charlie's is on Waiheke Island and is the 9th stop in the hop on off bus. Although there were other…read morerestaurants, we decided to dine here. We were able to grab a shaded table on the patio to enjoy the beach views Because I wasn't feeling well, I just ordered a salad, soup wasn't an option, while my sister got a fish and chips, surprise!! lol The service was super slow and there really wasn't that many patrons. I do believe that they were short staffed. So although the service was slow, we were in NZ and the wait staff was very pleasant and so we were very patient. Also, we're on vacation on the beach, me with a cold, we didn't want to ruin the vibe. Once our meal arrived, it was pretty good. My cucumber salad was refreshing and filling while my sister's fish and chips was good. However, while we were waiting for the next bus, we noticed they had a side counter where I thought they were only serving ice cream. Turns out you could order sandwiches and hot dog and other beach snacks. And there are plenty of benches to sit on just few steps on the beachside. The prices for ice cream stand seemed reasonable, the restaurant prices may seem outrageous. But just remember, the price is in NZ dollars. Once you apply the conversion, the meals are reasonably priced. Waiheke is an island so the ingredients are sourced from the mainland.

So I got one and tasted their passionfruit ice cream. The flavor was not too sweet and more on the tart side. I really enjoyed it. One scoop was $7. Besides the ice cream place had restaurants and pub house. Great place to hang out front beach location.

The butter for the bread and the bread itself was divine . The duck meatballs was worth every bite. Cocktails, wine all a delight. Make sure you make a reservation.

Came here expecting a lovely lunch a la carte (vs the white table cloth formal pice fixe menu), but left fairly disappointed by the experience. Agree with others, portion sizes are anemic - especially for the prices. They were also out of the duck leg and the oysters, with no replacement. It's $30-40 for starters, and $55-60 for a main (which doesn't include any vegetable or side). While food was good, definitely didn't justify the prices. You also are unable to taste wine while dining, but can go next door to the cellar door for $40 per person. I personally wasn't a fan of the tannin forward reds, but depends on your style. The service wasn't that great either - we had two kids with us and one of their dishes (pasta and red sauce) didn't arrive until everyone else was done eating (~15 min after). No reason other than "the kitchen was busy". The view is lovely but the bistro has the second hand view versus the more formal restaurant. The day we were there they also didn't have any tables set up outside. Next time, I'll probably opt for one of the other wineries with great food as there are many other spots with nice views on the island.
