After the passing of her husband of 27 years, my stepdad, in 2020, things were hard. Mom couldn't live alone anymore. I tried two assisted living homes, but they didn't compare to Landmark. The staff here, from the receptionist to the caretakers to the med techs to the executives overseeing the place, are all wonderful. Every day there is a schedule of activities, from balloon badminton to trivia to bingo. They have tea parties, live music, happy hours. Today when I visited mom activity coordinator Mariah was doing her nails. That is above and beyond in my book. They decorate for every holiday. The lobby, dining room and individual rooms are inviting and bright. The energy is great. Bottom line: I haven't seen my mom this happy in years. And that gives me peace of mind you can't put a price on.

PUblic spaces are well designed too, espcially the main foyer. And for now at least the price is relatively good. Staff is very friendly and helps whenever possible. (A special shout-out to Facility Manager Art Blancas.) A major flaw is the food. You pay for it whether you eat it or not. The few times we tried it meats were vastly overcooked and tasteless. (Salads are good.) So we buy our own food and cook it.

He was a great listener, helped us problem solve, listened to our needs and was transparent on pricing and ways we could potentially save. He did not sell us any gimmicks and was very sincere. A year ago, I was planning to sell my house in Castro Valley and move to a retirement community. I…read morevisited various places in Livermore, San Leandro, and Hayward. I liked Baywood Court the best because there is no expensive buy-in and the monthly rent is reasonable. From number 16 on the waiting list I was able to move in at mid-February. I have a one-bedroom apartment of 600 square feet facing the pool. It's between two exits so it's very convenient for my dog to go out for his business. Plus there is a half-mile trail inside the facility for his daily walk. I enjoy going through the Rose Garden and the Gazebo along many beautiful flowers and plants. Living at Baywood is like living in a hotel or a cruise ship. There is 24/7 lighting and air conditioning/heat throughout the building. I get weekly house-cleaning, change of bed linens and towels. I just leave my garbage at the door and all the packages I ordered are delivered to me . The two meals a day can be stretched to three because of the many options I can choose. In the one year I have been here, I have not cooked one meal for myself. No more driving to the gym. I just walk down the hall to my Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, and Zumba classes. We also have lots of performance by outside artists and regular health and informational meetings. Just this week we had Martini Monday, Coffee Social, and Tequila Thursday. You can play pool, jigsaw puzzles, Mahjong and many table games at the Game Room. There are also daily drive to shopping and regular visit to museums and scenic areas. Baywwod also has many group activities such as Sunday mass, Thursday Bible study, grief sharing, Spanish class, arts and crafts, movie and sports night, etc. I joined the Knit Wits to make projects for charity. I am the inventory manager and also volunteer as a cashier for our general store called The Cubby. The staff at every Department here are friendly and efficient. I love the community of other residents. The management does such a good job that I was pleasantly surprised when our rent did not go up for this year. I am so glad God provided me Baywood Court where I can live out the rest of my years feeling safe and secure.

My mother lived at Driftwood Manor for 7-1/2 years until her death last year. She had Alzheimer's…read moredisease, as well as diabetes (type II). In the 7-1/2 years, they never did manage her diabetes well enough to call it controlled, let alone well controlled. They had control of her diet and her medications, she was immobile; I am not sure why 7-1/2 years was not long enough to figure out a balance in that area. There were several owners of the nursing home during her stay there. Nursing homes typically change hands a lot. At one point, they tried to kick her out because the current ownership wanted to turn the nursing home into a rehab facility and a younger - more rehab type of patient - was being sexually inappropriate with several elderly patients. My mother had Alzheimer's and was unable to make responsible decisions. The other patient had been in a motorcycle accident and was in his supposedly right mind. She had inappropriate behavior with this one other patient; he had inappropriate behavior with several other patients. They tried to kick my mother out. There were some wonderful people on staff over the years and some less wonderful - like anywhere else. Some of the nurses and aids really cared about her and some clearly did not. Some nurses would take the time to negotiate with her and get her medications in her; some would just move on. There were times I visited her for hours and no one came in to change or turn her. Toward the end of her life, she was nonverbal and totally bed bound. During this time, I sat at her bedside for 2-3 hours at times and no one came in to turn her or change her. This was not just once or twice or during a short period of time. This was a regular occurrence over years. We looked around at a few different points and found that some other nursing homes looked better on paper, but weren't any better in person. Some nursing homes looked better on the surface, but had more violations than Driftwood. In the end, we didn't move her. It's hard to say if that was wise or not. Medicare no longer pays for any care related to bedsores because bedsores are 100% preventable by adequate nursing care. The last 1-1/2 to 2 years of my mother's life, she was in excruciating - 100% preventable - pain. The standard of care for a bed bound patient is an alternating air pressure mattress. Driftwood didn't provide one until after my mother had a bedsore. When my mother was dying, she was transferred to a hospital and I was there for dressing changes. Her bedsore was Stage III. There are only four stages and at stage IV, you can typically see the bone. Her suffering was preventable, but was not prevented. Her nursing care was inadequate. Driftwood is a nursing home. They are not great places to spend the end of a person's life. We could not afford better for my mother, which is a shame. If your family can afford better, I would strongly recommend you make that happen for them. If not, I strongly recommend that available family members become educated about the care needed for their loved one's care and make a coordinated effort to make sure that care is received. My mother's husband visited her every day she was there, but was ignorant, and assumed they were doing their job. That was very unfortunate for my mother.

Patients who are supposed to get up and walk every day (with assistance) or turned 3 to 4 times a day to avoid bed sores, they will be neglected! She was there for more than 4.5 years till her passing in Dec 2021, in her late 80's. We can't be grateful enough to the entire staff (from Management/ Administration to floor staff, in all the shifts), who made this facility a home away from home during her entire stay there and welcomed our family with warmth, any time of the day, even multiple times in a day. Not only did they take care of her physical needs, but also provided her technical help to use her cell phone / tablet so she could attend and listen to spiritual discourses, to nurture her soul too!! Some of the staff are fluent in some of the Indian languages, in particular Hindi, that made it easy for our mom to communicate. The entire staff (CNA, LVN, therapists, Social Services, Activities Room, Kitchen, Front Desk, Facility/Equipment/Grounds, etc.) is very caring, warm and considerate. Even during Covid, they did their best, in spite of shortage of staff, personal risks, and all other challenges and issues of dealing with a very dangerous and deadly pandemic. After the new owner and management took over this facility and renamed it, we continue to visit the facility periodically, to express our gratitude. We also continue to refer this facility to our friends for their loved ones. Some of the same staff still work there, remember our mom fondly and always welcome us. The facility is spacious, airy, bright, with all rooms having windows, and a nice garden outside, for walks, family gatherings, and occasional celebrations for the staff and residents. In summary, we are very happy and continue to recommend this facility to our friends for their family members, even after 4+ years because they have continued to maintain the same standard of care, per our occasional drop-in visits. When we drive by this facility, it warms our hearts! Though the rating we gave is 4 stars, it certainly exceeds that, and the facility continues to strive to get better. The pay rates are now equitable for local places so the amazing caregivers can get a semi-fair wage (they never get paid enough) and don't leave. There is also a larger caregiver staff on the memory care floor, which is super important. This is about as good as it gets. My mother is in memory care and I've been here pretty much every day for a year. It's a great staff that knows everyone and really work hard to do what they can for everyone. The food is great. The location next to the creek with the trees and the patio there with the cats is great. It's literally a 10 minute slow walk around the corner to the HARD senior center, the oldest Japanese Garden in CA, and the theater. It's a few blocks from the amazing library, city hall, the movie theater, downtown, and about any kind of amazing restaurant you could want. There is always something going on, and every week the live entertainment is amazing--the UPS driver dropping something off the other day came out to applaud how amazing the live band was. I would not mind living here, and I'm there so often, I feel like I do.
