My husband first went to this family-owned store when he was a child. Recently he was asked to handle the family's silverware - some being from his great-grandfather. I came to this place to sell some gold and silver jewelry. I had previously gone to a place closer to my home. I decided to try another place to compare. First when I walked in I was greeted very nicely. I gave them the same jewelry I brought the day before to the place by my house. I was offered $500 more than the other place. I was pretty shocked to hear the price difference. After I found out I realized they must be good for the client because I found out they have been in business for 67 years at the same location. Honest and competitive that is all you can ask for in this business. Brought in a bag of my clients coin collection, all silver no key dates. The gent behind the counter counted the coins, his tally came out the same as mine. They don't pay spot price that is how they make their money, but if you need to sell quickly you can't do any better. They also have very good prices on Wheat pennies and Buffalo nickels. One of my most fond memories growing up was going to Archie's with my grandpa. Having started a coin collection with my grandpa at a young age, it was only inevitable that at some point we'd visit a coin store to look at all the old coins and maybe if I was lucky enough, get to buy one. Normally, my coins came from my grandpa's old jars of change he had saved for years, and all I had to do was sort through them and find the keepers, but once I received the Whitman folders for pennies for Christmas one year, it became clear that I needed a 1909 VDB (obtaining the S-VDB was out of the question even to this day!). This was back in 1992 or 93, and I remember the place being small, smelling of "old" (gotta love that), and being run by a very friendly man who happily assisted my grandpa and myself in our purchase of my first 1909-VDB. I hadn't been there in years, so about two years ago I stopped by for old times' sake. After being buzzed in, I was immediately taken aback at how much this little place had changed. It seemed obvious this place had turned into another one of those "Cash for Gold" places once they realized they couldn't make money off selling non-commodities like old pennies and stamps anymore. The only coins they had in the display case were gold coins or mint/commemorative big silver. They carried a decent selection of gold jewelry as well. There was a group of about 5 or 6 older men sitting around at a table toward the back of the store talking about the gold market, cheap customers, and overall speaking like sailors. When they saw me browsing, they all gave me the stink-eye. I didn't look like a client apparently, since no one came to ask if I needed anything. Eventually I asked if they carried coin flips and one man grudgingly got up and wallowed over to where he keeps his coin flips and tossed them on the counter. I ended up buying some, and then I returned about a year later and bought some more. That time, the place was full of shady-looking individuals trying to pawn off some jewelry to an employee. I rate this place a 2, for the readily available coin flips, and for the fact that they DO carry some antiques, albeit expensive. That's proof they're not just in it for the gold and silver, they still have a soft spot for old toy trucks and such. It is at least fun to look at. However, I do miss the old days where you'd walk in to such a store and be mesmerized by all the coins you wish you could have but could never afford (me as a kid). Though, I understand the situation and realize they would have never stayed in business in such a manner. By the way, I still have that '09 VDB. read more

DO NOT GO HERE, NOTHING BUT CROOKS! I wish I could give Archie's 0 stars, but I'll have to settle with 1 for this horrible place. I have been to most of the coin shops around the Chicagoland area purchasing gold and silver (bars and 90%) and this is by far the most UNTRUSTWORTHY shop! I went there the first time to purchase 1/2 oz of gold and $40 face of 90% silver (about $2000 total purchase) and I ended up getting shorted $.50 on the junk silver (roughly $15). They claimed the 1964 Kennedy rolls they gave me were unopened, but I noticed one of the rolls was a little lighter than the others. It wasn't enough for me to complain, so I let it go. I went there the second time recently and decided to give them one more chance and purchased $50 face of junk silver (about $1200) and the younger guy there said I'll just throw the halves in the coin counter and give them to you. He came back with a bag filled with halves and I stupidly trusted him. In my car, I decided to look through the coins and I found the sob shorted me $5.50 face, which is over $100! There was one '71 (which is worth it's face value of fifty cents) and eight 1965-70 halves (all of which are 40%, not 90%)! I should have learned the first time. Like they say: fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. NEVER AGAIN! If you know what's good for you, go to the coin shop that's in Niles on Milwaukee, or the one in Morton Grove on Waukegan. Both are 100 times better than this scam shop! And never again will I purchase junk silver without being allowed to pick through the coins. UNBELIEVABLY BAD!!! read more

I'm confused is this a Pawn Shop or Coin Shop. I popped in over a few times over the years and bought some Key Date Coins and a Baseball card. I know what the prices are and they made a few bucks on the deal but i was ok with that the price always goes up over the years. Now I go in their and the place is dim lit and there are a bunch of guys sitting toward the back of the place talking about the price of Gold and Silver and how much money they made and soon as they saw me in an ear shot of them they hushed up. I honestly did not recognize anyone in their. Being in the location they are at I would imagine they get some High-End stuff coming in their and to the uneducated Buyer or Seller they will make some good money. A dear friend of mine also mentioned to me the Feds raided the place a couple of times. I always wondered don't you need back ground checks to work in these type of establishments? I FINALLY decided to sell some gold. A few weeks ago, I took some things to a jeweler who has completed repairs for me for at least fifteen years, and whom I trust implicitly. I didn't bother to check around, although an alarm should have gone off in my head when he said that his offer was good for only one day. A few days later, I gathered up some more items and visited Archie's first. I was impressed by the fact that the gentleman immediately notified me that one of the bands was platinum rather than 14K. He made me an offer for everything, and there was no pressure. I then drove to my jeweler to see what he would offer. Needless to say, his offer was significantly less. The next day, I drove back to Archie's with my bag of goodies. I was greeted, and my items were weighed again. The same offer as the previous day was made, and needless to say, this time I accepted it! I mentioned that I was impressed with their honesty regarding that platinum, and was merely told "We want you to be happy"! So, I was, and I am. I went into this location with my boyfriend (from Italy who speak no English) to buy a small gold coin. The first time we went into the store I asked the price for the gold coin and the elderly man looked at the younger fatter guy told us that the coin was going for 195$ for a tenth. I said we would be back. The market closed at 1277.00$ for an ounce so basically they were gaining a 67$ profit. The normal price would have been 140-155$ when i looked online. I am not saying that this elderly man and fatter guy are crooks but I am saying that they are not running an honest business I read another review that they gave bad prices to women before so maybe it was because I was a woman, maybe it was because I was translating into Italian for my boyfriend (tourist/foreign) or maybe it was because I was young but either way they were trying to take advantage of me and over-charge me a considerable amount. Regardless the following day we went into the store and there was a middle-aged tall thin gentleman working - I asked him the price without saying i was in there the day before and he said it was going for 155$. We ended up buying the coin because my boyfriend was going back to Italy the following day. But I ADVISE ALL especially women to know what you are talking about before going in because if they think they can they will take advantage of you. To me thats not a great business and despite the 50+ years in business I find that their model of business is a little skeptical - In essence the older guy and fat guy will try to run games with you so no matter who is working make sure you know prices and realize you will pay a 15-20% premium and 5-6% for the business that is normal anything more than that they are talking advantage of you. These guys don't know anything about coins. I went there a little while back to purchase some gold and this was one of my first buys, I didn't know the difference between one gold coin and the next. I saw a small coin, quarter ounce, and asked if it was pure gold. The guy took it out, look at it under his magnifying glass, and said, "Yeah, it looks like it". I purchased it and took it home and recently I decided to research it some more only to find out it was a 90% alloy, not pure!!! At least I didn't get ripped off since the amount of gold is the same, but if this guy can't tell the difference between a pure gold and alloy coin, that's pretty pathetic. This is a coin shop. This is their business. They better know the difference between coins, and it's not like this was an uncommon coin. It took me two minutes of googling to figure this out. I brought in coins that I wanted to be appraised. When I entered the store, I was looked at as if I was not wanted-I am African American. There were 2 men sitting down and they did not greet nor speak to me until I asked if I could get my coins appraised. One older gentleman appraised my coins, didn;t say anything else and walked away. It was 2 days after the election. I was not overly sensitive-I can tell the difference between poor service and discriminatory service. A woman walked in after me and was greeted and asked how they could help her. I next when to a coin shop futher east on Devon in Rogers Park and was treated exceptionally well.
