After 23 years of abusing alcohol and not dealing with my depression, I decided to check myself in to Alo. From the initial phone consultation I knew I had made the right decision. They had a driver named Mike who met me at the airport and helped ease my mind and answered my many questions on the drive to Malibu. Once I got to the Alo detox house over looking the Pacific Ocean, I was put at ease by the friendly staff and councillors, ( many of whom had some experience with recovery themselves). This was an extremely emotional time for me as I realized I would be getting to the core of my problems with Alcohol and depression over the following month, but not once did I feel it unsafe to discuss any and all topics with the amazing staff, therapists and psychologists. At the next phase my lodging was in a giant mansion with all the amenities including a pool and 24 hour staff on call to help with any issues. There was an absolute dream team of chefs who made all types of delicious meals to suite any and all dietary restrictions. Can't say enough good things about how well I was fed throughout my stay. The daily programming covered a wide variety of courses and the group discussions were where I found some of the most comfort and solidified some great friendships with other clients. Jared and Evan have created an amazing thing down there in Malibu and I hope they are aware of the impact they've had on many lives, including mine. All I can say is thank you, from the bottom of my heart to all the staff, councillors, and therapists at Alo House. I just received my 3 month chip ( the longest duration of sobriety I've had in 23 years) and Im slowly getting my life back in order. From the…read moremoment I (nervously) walked in, I could tell that the staff genuinely cared about what I was going thru and wanted me to get well. They made me instantly feel welcomed and comfortable, and throughout my stay I grew even more appreciative for the compassion and skill level of the staff. Their approach is very holistic and expands far beyond just the 12 steps. We learned meditation, breathing exercises, yoga, acupuncture, among many other things. The therapists are the best I've ever spoken with. I had 2 assigned to me including a trauma therapist who helped me work through issues I had never really spoken about with anyone before, helping connect my childhood trauma with my substance abuse issues, and giving me the tools to deal with it. The house is very spacious and comfortable with a giant pool and hot tub, and we had time to relax and match movies and hang out. I laughed a lot with the other clients and had more fun than I ever would have imagined in rehab and made new friends that I've continued to stay friends with after leaving. Beyond just getting clean, the Villa gave me the breakthroughs and tools I needed to stay sober and taught me how to enjoy life, laugh, and have fun without needing alcohol and for that I'm forever grateful. It took a friend convincing me to get help and give Ritz a shot, and honestly, it was the best decision I ever made. The staff really knows what they're doing when it comes to this disease, and they helped me finally get off fentanyl for good. Ritz is clean, cozy, and has this chill vibe that makes it easy to settle in and focus on getting better. What I loved most was how the team treated me , they actually listened, kept it real, and showed real compassion because many of them had been through the same struggles. They didn't just throw a one size fits all plan at me, they made a plan that fit meIt felt like a safe space where I could be open and vulnerable without any judgment. I met people there I never thought I'd even hang out with, but some of them turned out to be the best folks I've met. We even went on weekend outings that showed me how to have fun without drugs. Not the best experience, I was targeted by certain staff members and treated poorly at times. while…read moresome staff members were exceptionally helpful and supportive(Danielle, nick, Laura, Johanna, and Chantelle as well as the chef). The overall company was trying to get the most money out of my insurance as possible. I started off in the sober living facility and during Christmas time, I had covid over winter and had to take NyQuil and that was the first excuse for forcing me back into a rehab program that was not needed. My reason for being in the program in the first place was that I had 18 back to back surgeries over the past 4 years and was on opioids for a long period of time so this was a way to detox in a safe environment. There was no psychological addiction, just physical dependence to opioids. They lied about multiple addictions to medication(amphetamine addiction) that I was prescribed since childhood and used it to get more money through insurance. They also lied about an alcohol addiction, when I am medically intolerant to alcohol. When I got back to the sober living after this time I was talked about poorly among staff members and called "attention seeking" for asking for a few days off in order to visit 2 dying family members. Eventually someone in the group had consumed alcohol and told the staff which upset another client due to the unfairness and favoritism. This upset client gave me alcohol without my knowledge or consent and afterwards told the staff that I was drunk. This other client had been upset and doing things like this for 2 weeks prior to this incident. I believe he did this in order to prove a point that they will send people they dislike or with good insurance back to rehab in order to get more money. This client later confessed to me he had put alcohol in my drink without my consent and I had a reaction to the alcohol and was placed back into the rehab facility. I was put on addictive barbiturates and unnecessary medications for 2 days before my insurance denied coverage due to fraudulent services. The alcohol level was so low that there was no logical reason I needed to be there. I was then abandoned as a patient had had to find a new place to live in 2 hours or I was out on the street. Remember it's just a business. They don't actually care about you. They left another 2 of my friends on their own where one eventually fell into a coma following her abandonment. Something else they did was contact my pharmacy and told them never to fill any of my prescriptions ever from any doctor. I was no longer under their care at all. I'm a disabled person and this made it very difficult to obtain medication that I needed. This is a HIPPA violation for sure.

STAY AWAY! We sent our son (I am not including his name b/c he has asked that I not) to the…read moreEpiphany House after trying everything and feeling totally exasperated with our options. We knew we had to do something when his alcohol and heroin addiction became violent (one night he assaulted a pedestrian and smashed the windshields of half a dozen cars in our neighborhood). Only by the grace of god, did we eventually get him clean for 2 months and we were elated! We thought the Epihany house seemed like a great idea to get him acclimated and some badly needed friends. We met the owner, the entire staff, all of whom seemed friendly and interested in our son. On the surface, everything seemed great so we admitted him to the house. Slowly, the skeletons started to appear... Fist we discovered that the Epiphany house has only been around one year! The "staff", if you can call them that, have no formal training at all in addiction recovery! No social worker. No therapist. No profesionall counseling. No nothing! Absolutely no support is offered, except being around other boys, many of whom were terrible influences for our son. So what ends up happening is our son, like many of the other clients, spent months playing video games, watching TV and wasting time without counseling or guidance to address his underlying addiction. Second, the food the kids end up eating is atrocious. The "chef" makes extremely simple and mass produced food and only for dinner and only some nights. The rest of the time the kids eat pizza (LOTS of it), burgers and soda and other junk; whatever is cheap and lying around. Third, the drug testing is completely a joke. My son told me that many of the kids would keep using drugs and get urine from other kids to cover for them! We paid a tremendous amount of money to ensure that he is kept with kids who are clean. NOT the case. My son was surrounded by other kids who were using and it's a miracle he didn't relapse while there! Fourth, besides doling out medicines, dont expect the "staff" to have any idea about how to manage your child's psychiatric needs. If your son has any overlying psychiatric condition, the staff will be clueless. My son has bipolar and needs to be on lithium. When I spoke to the staff to ask if they were aware of my son's absolute requirement for lithium and to plead with them to ensure he gets it, I got back, "what's bipolar?" SERIOUSLY????? Again, another example of staff that just babysit and don't actually help anyone stay clean. Fifth reason, the boys are told they can't have girls over, but directly next to my son's room, another boy routinely brought his girlfriend over for a rendezvous. It's just what my soon needed.... Not being able to sleep because of the noise coming from the this guy and his girlfriend late into the night. Just another example of the frat house like atmosphere here! Last reason to stay away. There are so many better options. Sober living homes can provide real counseling, real support, real help and dont just babysit your kid while milking you of tens of thousands of dollars. I wont say the name of hte place, but our son is now in just one of those homes and is finally addressing his underlying addiction and getting REAL help. IN SUMMARY: If you want your child to be babysitted by incompetent and inexperienced staff who have no formal training in addiction recovery services while you are charged tens of thousands of dollars, the Epiphany House is just right for you. If you want somewhere that will actually help you child, keep looking; you wont find it here.

They have opened their homes and meetings to me and I am grateful. Their Thursday night house meeting is fun to attend and includes people currently living in the sober living as well as alumni who are actively working 12 step programs. It's wonderful to see how many people they have helped at this meeting. Okay so another important thing...the food is incredible. David is a food connoisseur and always has an excellent spread. It doesn't matter if it is catered from a local restaurant or prepared by their personal chef...it's always hearty and delicious. I've had everything from kabob to Honey's Kettle Fried Chicken to pizza to homemade Mac and Cheese with truffle oil and ham...very Southern style...always something yummy! If that's not enough...Janel is an avid baker and always has cookies, brownies and other sweet treats! They are generous & giving...In addition to helping people recover from their addictions they run a non-profit for chis, Chi Angeles Rescue and Chi Angeles Happy Tails.
