Message from former detox nurse at Alo.

It's unfortunate that you take clients, charge them a co-pay, say that their insurance is approved, and then, when they make it into your "recovery house" and are tempted to relapse with other patients who have drugs in the house...slip up one time and leave overnight, you the very concerned "recovery house" don't allow them to come back the next day without $30K. Yes Bob, it's obvious you really care. This is nothing but a business that only cares about the cash..just like every other business in America. It's not about the patient or their recovery. Start by keeping the heroin out of your house! Thanks for putting my daughter out on the street in a state where she knows no one and has no way to get to the airport..you know, the airport that you picked her up from? Maybe if you were a little more transparent and kept the "rules" the same across the board for every patient, your house wouldn't seem like such a joke. Now you have charged her insurance for inpatient recovery (after being there less than 7-10 days) and she can't go anywhere else. But I guess what's important here is that YOU got your insurance money and my copay. ***update: I was called by Bob and asked what it would take to remove this review. I was offered money but after refusing they came back and offered to have my daughter come back into the program at their expense. Hahaha...so she can have a target on her back? No thank you! So this review will stay while my daughter is getting the help she needs at an honest facility. I just received this message from a former employee so you can decide for yourself

If you're looking for a client-centered recovery facility, this is your place! Having just completed a month's stay at Alo House, I can't say enough about their client-centered approach. I was their first client after last month's fires in Malibu which forced their relocation to alternative facilities in West Los Angeles. From my pick-up at LAX by the delightful Mel, I never once felt that Alo was cutting corners on client well-being and needs -- all while they were literally 'rising from the ashes' to re-establish their operations in new premises. They did this with a calm, collected and professional demeanour and a constant focus on client satisfaction. Every request is met with their full attention -- from switching out a mattress for better sleep comfort to issues around diet preferences to providing insight into their theraptic process to requests for certain common areas to be designated non-smoking. The procurement manager went out and bought a 'goodie basket' of cheeses, cold cuts, crackers, coffee and other edibles after I casually mentioned wishing my house had some sandwich fixings. Alo has been great about providing transport when I wished to go somewhere outside the facility. I was particularly interested in having yoga as a central piece of my recovery journey, so Alo arranged private instruction for me. Alo's staff clearly enjoy their work and have respect for the company. Many have worked at other recovery centers and, almost without exception, claim that Alo is the best they have encountered so far. Although perhaps not the center-piece of one's recovery, special mention must be made of the quality of the food served at Alo. Chefs Jorge and David never ceased to amaze with the quality of food. It is prepared fresh, beautifully presented and made from the best quality ingredients. The menus are varied and balanced. I kept joking that they should team up with Weight Watchers because one could be tempted to 'go to town' on the food. I was able to maintain a well-balanced and nutritious diet during the entirety of my stay at Alo. The accommodations are comfortable and well maintained by the charming and friendly dynamic duo of Oli and Gina. Each room is a large screen tv -- great for binge-watching HBO during downtime -- and common areas are nicely appointed and cosy. The therapists/case managers are skilled professionals with a high level of commitment and professionalism. My case manager, Jodi, and primary therapist, Rudy, were fully commited to my well-being and made that abundantly clear with each interaction. All boundaries of confidentiality are maintained. They do their best to run productive groups despite a mixed cohort of clients with varying levels of commitment and participation. Staff could strive to institute more rigour and discipline for ensuring client participation, although it is understandable when this is not doable given that each client is on their own path to recovery and has their own level of commitment to the process. The medical oversight is top-notch. Drs. Stanley, Benya and Sagan and RN Missy are commited professionals with a personable approach. The frequency of consultations is high and medical staff are available whenever needed, even when not on-site. Alo maintains strict protocols and is completely on top of client medical treatment. I loved Bob Forrest's talks on Tuesday evenings. Bob is engaging, clear, witty and personable. A great asset to Alo. Owners Evan and Jared are also very personable and have a keen interest in hearing from clients in order to make the Alo experience as beneficial and rich as it can be. They have had a lot on their plates as a result of the Malibu fires. I never once saw them looking stressed out or had the impression that their focus was anything other than the well-being and comfort of clients. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the great Shift Leads and Residential Advisors (RAs) who literally keep it all happening 24/7. Finally, I loved my two horse 'vision rides' in the Will Rogers State Park with the amazing and kind Corey. What I have taken from my month at Alo is what I consider to be the fundamentals of well-being: (i) good sleep; (ii) good diet; and (iii) good exercise. It doesn't get more basic than that. I thank Alo for helping me find those again.

The team there is unparalleled. I wish I could name everyone that were members of my treatment team at Rise, but a few shoutouts to Nam for driving my sad sack self to Rise, baking amazing bread, and being an amazing support from Day 1, Shari & Zach from nursing for the care, fun, pep talks, and compassion, Dr Mark for his wisdom and pragmatic approach that I really resonated with, and numerous others (the chefs are next-level good, Tessa, Luke, Saber, Destiny, Cesar, Cat, Michael, Terry, Adrian, etc). Outside of the fantastic staff, I'll add that the house is gorgeous, the groups are varied and enriching, there's a good balance between free time & groups, the rooms are comfortable and spacious, and they do a great job of ensuring that you have access to outside appointments - for example, I was able to go to Passover services while at Rise without having to go through a lot of hoops/bureaucracy. The amenities are fun and obviously appreciated, but the heart of this place is really why I would recommend it to a loved one or friend in a heartbeat. Thank you so much, Rise team!!!

A Life Forever Changed ~ Thank You…read more There are moments in life when words fall short, but I'll try. The Rise at Malibu didn't just support me they saved me. In one of the darkest chapters of my life, they extended a hand that pulled me back into the light. Their compassion, expertise, and unwavering commitment were more than professional they were profoundly human. I owe my life to the care, patience, and strength they showed me. Every step of the way, they treated me not as a case, but as a person worth fighting for. That kind of impact doesn't fade it stays with you, reshaping how you see yourself and the world. I want to begin by saying that The Rise in Malibu is far more than just a treatment facility it's a sanctuary for healing, transformation, and rediscovery. After extensive research, I felt confident in my decision before I even arrived. Now, as I prepare to leave, I can say with absolute certainty: I made the right choice. I'm walking away with the reset I desperately needed, armed with tools, a solid plan, and a renewed sense of purpose. What drew me to The Rise in Malibu was their deep commitment to mental health and trauma recovery the very roots of my struggle. From the moment I made that first call, I wasn't just another intake. Ron spoke to me with warmth and clarity, painting a picture of the care I'd receive and the space I'd call home. He gave me hope when I was falling apart. Then Allison stepped in, answering every message, listening to my tears, and making sure I had everything I needed to get to Malibu. Angie welcomed me with open arms, her radiant smile and vibrant energy instantly making me feel safe and seen. She tailored my experience with such care that I always felt supported and comfortable. The program itself is exceptional comprehensive and deeply personal. From licensed psychotherapists and medical doctors to psychiatrists, nurses, holistic therapies, case management, personal training, and even a private chef, every detail is designed to nurture healing in body, mind, and spirit. To anyone considering The Rise in Malibu this place doesn't just treat addiction it treats the person behind it. They saved my life. I recommend them with every ounce of gratitude in my heart. ~ Luka

I was lucky enough to be in the main house, which has a capacity of 6 (2 singles and 2 double rooms). Because there are multiple houses, things had a tendency to feel a little disjointed and disconnected. My main gripe is that I did not think my therapist was good at all. I was not alone in this feeling; one client actually asked to change out of her care and go to a different therapist. Groups were fine. Mostly short and sweet which I liked. I also enjoyed the outings and movie nights. The staff was great across the board. The food was pretty bad - lots of chicken and bland vegetables. There was a lot of food waste; leftovers were thrown away after 24 hours which I found sad as they could have been donated or given to staff. Little amenities like the laundry service were nice. The hot tub was broken for most of my time there which was a huge bummer. Overall it's an okay place to go to seek treatment but there are better places to go. The best part was the alumni network and follow-up experience - they excel at that.

Title: Extremely Troubling Experience - Please Read Before Choosing This Facility…read more My family recently had a deeply troubling experience involving Cliffside Malibu and their so-called "sister property" in Los Angeles. I'm sharing this to protect other families who may be searching for trustworthy, clinically appropriate dual-diagnosis care. For several weeks, my family member had been in regular communication with a Cliffside Malibu representative about potentially entering their program. We ultimately chose a different treatment center, but when a severe medication reaction occurred at that facility, he ended up hospitalized and in crisis. In order for the institution to discharge him safely, he needed confirmation that another program would take him immediately. He contacted the same representative at Cliffside and was told a bed was available. I personally called that evening to confirm. I was told again, very clearly, that a bed was reserved and that arrangements would be made the next morning for pickup. However, everything changed the moment I asked whether they already had his insurance information on file. Cliffside advertises that they accept his insurance in network. The representative told me he was "under the impression" we would be paying out of pocket--over $70,000 per month. When I stated that insurance would be used, the tone of the conversation shifted abruptly. The next morning, the same representative told my family member that Cliffside Malibu no longer had availability after all, but that they could place him in their "sister property," a location called Casa Palmera in Los Angeles. Given the urgent situation and lack of alternatives, he had no choice but to proceed. What he arrived to was nothing like what Cliffside promises on their website or in their admissions calls. It was literally just a house. There were only two other clients, one of whom left that night, leaving him and one roommate. Meals were ordered from Uber Eats. He was told he would receive group therapy consisting of himself and his one roommate, and a brief weekly Zoom check-in with a psychiatrist. This is not remotely "comprehensive dual diagnosis care," nor what Blue Cross believes they are paying for. In the midst of acute withdrawal and psychological trauma, he was asked to pay $5,000 upfront, which he did--only to discover that the entire experience was essentially a bait-and-switch. He left after one day, now even more distrustful of the treatment system and still in need of medically appropriate care. To make matters worse, the posted licenses for this "sister" facility were expired just days before they admitted him. This raises serious concerns about regulatory oversight and transparency. We will be notifying the insurance company, as the care provided in no way resembled the services they claim to deliver. I am sharing this experience so that other families can exercise caution and ask very direct questions before trusting what is being represented on the phone or online. Our hope is that no one else finds themselves in the same vulnerable position.

This place is nothing more than a trap house staffed by individuals that look like they're still in their active meth addiction. Either that or they don't offer their staff dental health benefits because half of them are missing teeth, and look like they just arrived from the nearest homeless shelter. It's dingy, the common areas are carpeted, it's dark, and filthy. Their idea of a 'luxury' private room with king size bed was adjoining two queen size beds together. And they couldn't even do that properly as there was nothing keeping them attached. Therefore you can fall right down the middle. Pathetic. One staff member not only used expletives like a pirate but also managed to call me a Masshole (cause I'm from Massachusetts), only to then give me tips on how to tell good meth from bad meth! Having driven 6 hours to this dump I thought it best to spend the night since it was already dark outside. But first thing in the morning bright and early I was out of there. Though they didn't make it easy. They begged me to please stay even offering to walk my dogs (I brought with me) on my behalf and even take them to the dog park multiple times a day. There I was thinking to myself, 'I don't trust you with MY well-being much less my dogs well-being'! And so I left and hightailed it back to my home. I didn't think a place like this could exist in Malibu, but what this taught me is that even in Malibu one has to do their due diligence in researching a facility. I have since then heard from other individuals that this is a 'body broker' type of place. If you don't know what a 'body broker' is, Google it. Essentially it's when they pay (in one form or another) for someone to get high/use so they can bring them in and charge their health insurance. Alternatively it can also manifest as specifically seeking those in active addiction (regardless of their wanting to get sober or not) and paying/convincing them (one way or another) to come in; and as you may have already guessed: charge their health insurance. It is because of places like Oceanside Malibu that the recovery industry needs to be much more stringently regulated. A place like this dump should not be legally allowed to exist.
