    A 3D image of my baby!! 3
    Kyung B.

My Obgyn referred me to this doc and said "ignore the reviews on yelp (typical bad advice but folks, we're not talking about food or a restaurant here... We're talking about a highly skilled professional who there is only 1 of and no "sous chef" to assist with the service)... The main complaints are all about the long waits. Just take some food, water, and something to do". But she also said "I'm sending you to him because he doesn't miss a thing". Being over 35 and having suffered 2 miscarriages before, seeing a knowledgeable and skilled doctor was critical for me. So I sat playing candy crush, answered work emails, eating my sandwich, crackers, and juice. During the first appointment, I waited for about 2 hours and was seen by a imaging tech. The imagining tech was kind, thorough, and showed me everything about my baby. I have never been to a imaging tech so thorough. She took about 30 mins showing me the baby's head, extremities, all the fingers and toes, leg bones, arm bones, all 4 chambers of the heart, the size of the placenta, the length of my cervix, etc. Then the doctor, Dr. Karimi, came in and did his own imagining... He noted that my cervix was short and proceeded to do an exam. Within seconds he was able to tell me things I never knew about myself... The possible reasons why I may have had difficulty keeping the pregnancies... Etc! He spent about 15 minutes with me. I was overwhelmed by his knowledge and also saddened that I hadn't found him during my other two lost pregnancies.. Overall, the staff and him spent about 1 hour seeing me. No wonder there is a wait. Thoroughness and quality individualized care is not something that can be done in 10-15 minute visit. His office gets it. Quality over quantity.. although I'm sure other patients feel the same way as me thus his office has the quantity too. I cried quietly after my first appointment while waiting for my prescriptions in the lobby of the building. Thinking of my two lost babies and wishing I had found Dr. Karimi back then but so thankful that I finally found someone who could help me now. He must have saw me on his way to the hospital across the street. He stopped, gently tapped my arm, and asked if I was okay. He stopped. That's what got me... Here is a busy doctor, who has a waiting room full of patients, is busier than all hell even with 10+ staff members... Yet he stopped to see if there was anything else he could do for someone in need. I told him they were happy tears and he said "okay, I just want to make sure you're okay". Huh? Wha? These idealist "doing good for the sake of good" doctors exist?! Eventually, weeks later, I ended up getting a cerclage done by him. He and his staff were very attentive through the process. They scheduled me as soon as my insurance would approve.. they called me multiple times to update me and Dr. Karimi called me from his cell phone the day before the surgery to see if I had any questions. During the surgery, I heard Dr. Karimi explain why he preferred his cerclage a certain way to the RNs helping him... It was so that his patients had the best chance of keeping the babies. I think that's what it is... He explains. Doctors these days are so smart but not necessarily good teachers... They neglect to explain. They diagnose, they script you meds, and they're off to the next patient but you can tell Dr. Karimi is passionate about his field. He wants what I want... A healthy baby born to my family and he's educating me on how to best do so. So yes, it's a long wait. If you don't like it... Leave please so that my wait is that much shorter BUT if you're looking for a doctor who is knowledgeable, attentive to details, and skilled... Well, just like any good thing-- this is worth the wait.

Great doctor! Downside long waits but they allow you to leave and hold your spot so you don't have to sit there waiting an 1 hr plus!

Dr. Yau has a kind, compassionate, and gentle manner and I am always pleasantly surprised when he takes a genuine interest in my life, what I've been up to, etc. answers all my questions, and doesn't rush with anything. (Which explains why nobody gets their appointment on time. :) ) I also appreciate the other staff. One time I had painful 2nd degree burns from an accident; couldn't really go anywhere, and one of the nurse practitioners "held my hand" through text messages, advising me on wound care at home. The same thing happened another time when I had an infected spider bite. My only minor complaint is how busy they are and sometimes phone calls are not returned, or questions take an extra phone call to be addressed.

My mother (an inpatient RN) was evaluated here for joint issues and was placed on two months of medical leave by her provider. However, when we requested completion of the SDI (DE 2501 Part B) form, the office refused and told us she needed to attend physical therapy first. We followed that instruction, only to have the physical therapy office clarify that they do not complete SDI certification--this must be done by the treating medical provider. When we returned, the front desk then insisted she would not qualify for disability, which is not their role to determine. Eligibility is decided by the California Employment Development Department, not administrative staff. This resulted in unnecessary delays, multiple visits, and completely avoidable confusion during a time-sensitive situation. More concerning is the lack of consistency--placing a patient on medical leave while simultaneously refusing to complete the required documentation does not make sense. Patients should not be sent back and forth or given incorrect information. If the office chooses not to complete disability forms, that policy should be clearly communicated upfront rather than shifting responsibility and providing misleading guidance. Just to be fair, the first NP encounter my mom had was pleasant and professional. But the administrative handling was disorganized and unprofessional. This process needs to be addressed.

So then asked if there was any other medical needs or questions i needed to ask the doctor today? and when i said no, she refunded me my copay. A week later, someone from their office called me and asked me to come in so i can discuss my blood results with a doctor. They also gave me the option to do this over the phone and SURPRISE!!!! THEY WANTED TO CHARGE ME ANOTHER COPAY!!!! At my old PCP, they did not charge me a second copay for discussing my results. if you don't want to be nickeled and dimed for everything, then i suggest you look for another doctor's office. She said Dr. Shu had helped her with her eczema and some other nasty skin conditions I pretended not to hear about, but most importantly did "a great job" with a mole on her back. But c'mon this is my FACE we're talking about, my BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL FACE!!! But I sucked it up and went to Dr. Shu to get it checked out. The first visit, I told Dr. Shu my concerns about the mole, and especially scarring on my face. She showed me different moles on a chart about melanoma and skin cancer on the wall in the examination room. She carefully explained that my "nevus" was slightly abnormally shaped and colored, and though she didn't think it was melanoma, she still recommended that it be removed and tested. There were several options, all of which sounded awful to me: she could shave it off or punch it out (with this thing that looks like a paper hole punch on the end of a pen) and both could possibly leave discoloration or scarring. I didn't know what I wanted to do, but luckily, Dr. Shu was patient, and told me to take my time and think about what I wanted. After discussing with my family, I decided on removal with the weird punch thing, but Dr. Shu was completely full that week, and I couldn't get off work any other week! Dr. Shu told me I could walk-in at about 12:30pm, and she would see me as soon as she finished with the patients with appointments (thank goodness!!!) I thought it was going to be the worst thing ever, but when the time finally came, the whole procedure lasted less than 5 minutes! I closed my eyes and when she told me to open them, my mole was floating in a little jar and she had sewn me all up! She did a great job, and I could barely even see the stitches because she had closed up the hole in such a neat way, along my hairline! 2 weeks later, I came to get my lab report and to get the stitches removed, and I was amazed by how great I looked! No more ugly mole, but no ugly scar either! The skin was completely smooth, and besides a barely noticeable darker tint, I couldn't even see where the mole had been removed. So so happy!!!
