Speaking of variety, it seems that vendors change on occasion - a good reason to get something that I like rather than putting it off, and to come back again and again. This may partially explain why there is no map available. I don't know what happens on the back-end, as the only map I could find was from 2021. As nice as walking around and exploring is, having a guide of some kind would be very helpful. This becomes doubly valuable considering some vendors are selling prepared foods. On that note, some more eating areas would be welcome. The prices are on the high side, as can be expected from a Farmer's Market. That said, $4/pound for albeit organic potatoes seems very high. Thankfully for my wallet, I did not arrive hungry, or I would have thrown dollars to the wind. Final verdict: As far as Farmer's Markets go, Green City Market is great! You can find a wonderful variety, and every week can be a new adventure. Prices are very high, but that is to be expected. While the idea is that you buy something, there is no obligation to. While walking around, I kept smelling something really good and basically followed the scent until I found the Baked Cheese Haus booth. Soon as I saw them scraping all that melted cheese over the sandwiches, I already knew I was getting one. I went with the Jambon Cru. Melted raclette scraped over cured ham on toasted baguette with spring onions, baby gherkins, and Dijon. And wow... this thing was a cheesy overload. So much melted cheese, rich, creamy, and warm. The baguette was toasted with that nice crunch, sturdy enough to hold all of it together. Then the gherkins and Dijon came in and cut through all that richness with a little tang and sharpness, which made every bite better. Messy, cheesy, a little ridiculous honestly. The whole market has such a fun vibe too. Busy, lots of people walking around, fresh produce everywhere, live energy all around. The people at the booth were super friendly too. Now I'm seriously about to go to Wisconsin just to find them again.

With it being winter, there isn't a whole lot of produce, but plenty of food vendors so come hungry. I was really happy to see Yvolina's Tamales from Pilsen there. I just made tamales yesterday, but couldn't help but buy one still. I do love her tamales and don't make it to Pilsen often enough. I was really hoping to find jars of jam because I only have 1 jar left of my own jam. There was only one vendor selling jam and it was sugar free. I like eating healthy but jam should be sweet IMO. There are plenty of pastry vendors. The usual farmers market representation. A lot of them looked really good, but I was too full to partake. I brought home Ube cookies, sugar scrubs, and local honey I really look forward to spring and summer farmers markets when produce and flowers are in abundance. Not to mention vendors with jam ;)

I was a bit skeptical about going to the South Loop Market when a friend suggested we meet up here…read more I don't really need much at a farmer's market right now, and paying for parking to go to this one in Water Tower Place made me grumble but it was something to do with a friend, and with the kids, which can be difficult to find at this age. I was totally wrong and was really surprised at how great a market it was. It took place on the fourth floor of WTP and it was huge; I have most often been to the Ravenswood or Lincoln Square and those are a fraction of this size. There were booths with their foodstuffs--salsas, produce (including eggs, of course a hot item in 2025), bread and pastries, donuts, and so on. There was a section with prepared foods (the burgers looked really great). There was even live music happening at one end of the market, advertising the Chicago Blues Fest. There's a kids section in with the food court, but we didn't let the kids out since it was just blocked with stanchions and these two are too young to really understand they need to stay nearby. Overall the market was very well done. Fortunately, it didn't feel too terribly overcrowded except for when we were going over by where the band was. And we found out as we were wrapping up that they had a free two-hour parking offer. Not sure if that's just for the first time you download this parking app or what but I'll be keeping it in mind since I plan to attend again if I can before the winter market wraps up. The worst part is not the fault of the market but the elevators at Water Tower Place are still terrible. They're incredibly slow, and one was out of service! Hopefully they have that fixed now because it was painful. If you're able-bodied the escalator will be a better bet, instead of standing around with the masses looking longingly at the third elevator which only goes to a few floors (the fourth not being one of them).

There were salsas, dips, sweet teas, pet products, honey, nuts, and several kinds of baked goods. Many also sold hot food to be eaten then and there. Kudos to the organizers for putting a couple high tables so eating and walking wasn't an absolute requirement. A fantastic number of vendors were also giving away samples so you could try before you buy. Even though this is more or less standard practice, if I'm given free stuff, in any amount, all I can say is thank you. All this is good and fine - why four stars? Well, I can understand MSUFCU (a bank) having a table as a sponsor. However, Nothing Bundt Cakes, despite their merits, being a business with ~800 nationwide locations damaged the hyper-local vibe. In addition to being [mostly] super local, all the vendors were incredibly kind and friendly - especially the man running YallaTizers! Final verdict: While the selection may not fill your fridge with everything you need for the week, there are plenty of items which can help augment your regular shopping trip, and some that are just for fun! There are regular weekly vendors, including Hilary's cookies, organic vegetable farmers, a taco/tamale stand, Tamales Express, that sells mangos on sticks, as well as two rotating food trucks. Additional draws are the terrific kids' activities, including a concert, the bouncey house, various activity stations such as baby sensory tents, rock painting, sandbox, water toys, and more. After 6pm the playground opens. We basically love the organizers and have become regulars over the course of this summer/fall. I grew up in Chicago, and lived here a good portion of my life, but finally, have gotten to a point where it feels like I have a neighborhood in Chicago. Can't wait for next year.
