I'm from Los Angeles, and I have to say this place was such a sweet surprise. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and made me feel right at home, which always stands out when you're visiting a new city. The outside is super cute too it actually caught my eye when I first found them on Yelp, and it's just as charming in person. I tried the Teddy Graham latte on the barista's recommendation, and I'm so glad I did. It had great flavor without being overly sweet, and I got it with whole milk which made it perfectly smooth and comforting. If you're in downtown Chicago, I'd definitely recommend checking out this spot. It's a cozy little gem with great vibes and even better drinks. read more

Clearly a popular spot, run like a well oiled machine. The space is tiny so they only allowed four people in a time and then you wait outside in the alley for your order. The bagel was good, I had a hippie sandwich and my boyfriend got a bacon egg and cheese which he said was good too. read more

Ordered: Cortado w Lavender (~$5) Aya's take: Tucked away in an alley, Hero Coffee Roasters is a tiny coffee shop that also serves breakfast bagel sandwiches. We just needed a quick pick-me-up so I got a Cortado and added Lavender syrup. The Cortado was nice and creamy but considering how little volume this drink was, the Lavender was overpowering. I wish they matched the quantity of syrup accordingly. Nonetheless, it gave me the boost I needed! read more

After a long flight, I was really craving a good coffee and a bagel, so I searched for cafés near my hostel and found this place. Tucked away at the end of an alley, it's definitely a hidden gem and made for a fun, unique experience. I was surprised to see a security guard at the entrance directing people into the café, but it quickly made sense. The café itself is tiny, and they only allow about four customers inside at a time. The alley is decorated with string lights and has a really cool vibe. There isn't any indoor seating, instead, all the tables are set up outside in the alley. You place your order from the alley, and when it's ready, they call your name to pick it up from the small service window. I decided to try one of their seasonal drinks, the Choco Taco Cold Brew, and it was absolutely delicious. The real star of the meal, though, was the Herd Bagel Sandwich. It was hands down one of the best bagel sandwiches I've had in a long time. Fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I was craving after traveling. The only downside is the seating. Since there are only a handful of outdoor tables, finding a spot can be a little tricky during busy times. But if you can grab a seat, it's definitely worth the visit. read more

The original Hero Coffee Bar on E. Jackson near the Art Institute is a cool vibe. Only four customers can be in the cafe at a time, it's that small. Eating, or drinking is outside in the entrance alleyway. Two cold today for that, so, I took the barista's recommended flat white on my continued walk a few sites. Great cup. Highly recommend Hero. read more

Stopped in for a quick drink and to get some work done, and the place was buzzing with energy, even on a weekday morning. It definitely felt like a go-to spot for people grabbing coffee before work, on a break, or catching up with a friend. Located near the LaSalle Metro and the Blue Line. I had one of their coffees and it definitely did the job, the caffeine had me wide awake. The staff was friendly and quick, handling the steady flow of people with ease. Cute, quick and trendy. That's how I would describe my trip to Hero Coffee today. It's nestled between two buildings - the outdoor seating area being a walkway sandwiched in the middle. I've seen the place often and was so happy I got the chance to stop by today. I order the Iced Latte with Oak Milk. The coffee, even with the added Carmel syrup, was a little strong for me. They don't add sugar and you must do it yourself given their available condiments. I didn't love that part. Overall, it's a cute place to stop by if you are in the area. read more

A great bagel breakfast place to eat! I had their lox bagel which was so good! The salmon was prepped well and the other ingredients were fresh. The bagel was nice and toasty. By the end of the bagel, I was definitely no longer hungry. The service was good. The cashier was nice and helpful. This store is popular so it took a bit of time for my bagel to be made. The ambiance is tricky to describe. There's no seating inside, but there is seating outside in an alley, which was actually kind of cool! I'd definitely come back! read more

I was walking by and randomly saw this bagel place with a big line out the front, and I just knew I had to try it. There was a super long line for a random weekday, but the line went fairly quickly, and I got my food within 15 or so minutes. There wasn't a lot of seating though, so I ended up eating while walking to my destination. I got an americano and a criminal bagel breakfast sandwich. The criminal bagel was sooo good, packed with flavor. A balance of sweet, salty, fatty and just plain delicious. I would definitely come back here again if I'm ever around, which I hope to be sometime again! read more

We came here on a Sunday around 11am. There was a line out the door, and they weren't serving hot beverages because of a mechanical error. But it took less than 10 minutes to get in and order. Then it took about 10 minutes to get the food. It was pretty quick and the staff were nice / were moving fast. I got an everything bagel with chive cream cheese, it was great, just enough cream cheese (not NY / NJ style). Still good. The bagel wasn't thick but it was fluffy, it was good. My partner got a cheddar and herb bagel with the lox as the sandwich. It was enjoyed. My child got a plain bagel with plain cream cheese and said "it was good". They have a solid iced matcha latte, so that might be 4 stars except it feels like my friend has made something better at home and so this makes this feel expensive for what it is. I feel like downtown is unfortunately overpriced for often average or less quality, and so while this alley is cute, I would not go out of my way to come back here. I only really came here to meet someone for coffee, but I'd probably try other spots next time. read more

This was a great coffee shop! It is kinda hidden in an alley, but just follow the crowd of people waiting for their name to be called from the takeout window. The shop itself is tiny so all the seating is outdoors. The staff was very nice and were working quickly to get our orders out. I had the egg and cheese on an everything bagel. Hidden far back into the alleyway, you could almost miss Hero Coffee when walking by. However, stepping in you find a nicely decorated space with lots of outdoor seating and a beautiful coffee marquee sign. The inside is a compact area for ordering with a chalkboard menu. I got the Midwest Princess, which is a matcha with mocha and strawberry. Very Chappell Roan and springtime style! I also got the Bullseye bagel sandwich on a sesame bagel. It is quite good and filled with lots of toppings for a lot of flavor! Overall, it took under 10 minutes to get food and drink. Not local to Chicago, but I'd recommend this place if you're looking for something authentic to the city! read more

Visiting from Las Vegas, NV and decided to try a different local coffee/grab-and-go breakfast spot every day of our vacation. I preferred this over Tilly Bagel Shop. The bagel was good, the iced latte was good, and we got everything we ordered very quickly. This is a small independent coffee shop in the loop that makes good coffee and the service is fast and friendly. But this place is best only if you're on the go. There's only a handful of tables outside and none inside. In fact, only a few people at a time can even fit inside. You just order and then exit. Your order will be called from the window promptly. The alley with the tables is really cute. A little hideaway. But on nice days, those tables are always full. I did finally get a table today, but only because it was cool and raining. read more

This is more of a note to myself, I truly wish I was closer to the other location but the begals and coffee are good. I just need to remember to ask for cream cheese on the side. The tiny amount they put on melts into the Begal ... I asked for extra this time and at least could see there was cream cheese, but had no impact on the sandwich. There are no indoor seating, but outdoor seating only. You can only fit 5 people at a time inside. I got the Sausage, Egg, & Cheese bagel and it was good! You can choose your bagel, any add-ons, and cream cheese flavor. They do have mobile order, so that may be quicker than going in and ordering if the line is long. The bagel didn't overpower with cream cheese, and everything tasted good. The laptop users were respectfully directed to sit at the windows and outlets were available. The baristas were friendly and knowledgeable. I asked the details of the latte flight and they explained the offerings. I thought there was only one type of latte flights, but I believe the one I selected was very much suited to my preferences. "Stockyard Coffeehouse" is accessible via routes CTA 44 (Racine/Wallace) and CTA 8 (Halsted) busses. Never before have I been so astonished at the lack of care a neighborhood coffee shop could possess. That is, until I stepped into Hero Coffee Bar this morning. The owners pose as a loving couple, but are truly the worst coffee shop operators in the city. Mr. tough guy with all his tattoos was either having a bad day, or has been taking his bad life out on everyone since birth. I can't truly tell, but he was a piece of work. Not only did he disrespect my mother, a woman who frequented the store almost daily (never again!), but he disrespected my puppy. I have a small, happy scottish terrier. This dog has never shown an act of aggression in his life. However, this tatted moron kicked him out, claiming he was scared. I almost feel bad for this dude. Imagine being scared of a puppy, who has been coming into your store for years now. I can't be sure of this, but his reaction represented a rhetoric my people have been faced with since escaping Egypt. I hope he didn't make this decision due to religion, but you can't rule anything out. I know I haven't mentioned the god awful prices, but that should be a part of your decision making process as well. Hero Coffee Bar is not only an overpriced, poser version of starbucks, but it employs and is owned/ operated by disrespectful individuals, who do not deserve continued business. There are far too many shops in this town that operate with great values. I had some of their food and it made me horribly sick. There is nothing I hate more than pompous shop owners. Imagine how you'd react, if skinny tattoo loser disrespecting your mom and dog was the first thing you heard today! I am calling for a citywide boycott. I wanted to order the second, but they were ALSO out of an ingredient. The drink the bartender made me was good, but not what I initially wanted, or the backup I wanted to it. As for an app, I ordered the spiral potato, which failed as bad as the breakfast. First, it was cooked inconsistently, with the inside being underdone. Worse still, it too had an obscene amount of salt. A case when I sent food back. Final verdict: I will give T.G.E.C. credit for great pastries, but that is where I have to stop. While the prices are somewhat reasonable, in exchange one gets WAY oversalted and overdone or underdone food. See a drink you like on the menu... they don't have it. At this rate, I rather go elsewhere, for the area is far from a desert.
