The very day after Hurricane Sandy, I was surprised to find Argyle Yarn Shop, which had shown up under my half-hearted phone search for "Park Slope knitting store" - half hearted because it was the day after a devastation region-wide storm and the streets looked like salad and I didn't know how I'd be able to get the supplies I needed to whip up something for a very important baby shower that same weekend. The phone rang, and someone picked up. I enjoyed the walk over there. I was one of those idiots who walked out of the house in shorts and flip flops so I had mud and street debris up to my ass cheeks, and I asked first if I could use the restroom. He kindly directed me to a roomy, spanking new place where I freshened up, getting down on my hands and knees to pick up every last leaf and dirt fleck off the spotless floor. When I walked back out, I took stock of the place and realized it was incredible. First of all, there was a ton of space, and even a back room lined with more tables that made it obvious that this is one of those shops that also offers classes and gatherings. The main room was brightly but not harshly lit, with neatly arranged yarn in shelves around the perimeter of the space, leaving plenty of room for browsing. A lady with an impressive array of self-made knits sat working at the center table, but there was plenty of additional space had I wanted to sit down with my own pieces of work. As I began to talk with the man (the owner's wife, turned out), I realized that I should probably go back home to drop off my grocery shopping and to also write down what I needed. When I came back, there were a few more people milling about the store, but the man gave everyone equal attention. Though I'd written down my needs, I kept changing my mind about the projects I wanted to take on and thinking about other things that required other supplies. At one point, I was leaning over the counter, using this guy's computer to find some esoteric pattern I'd stumbled upon in one of countless Internet searches...and he was tolerating it. Not only this, but he helped me calculate the yardage of yarn required by several projects, some of which I ultimately decided to save for another time. When the wife walked onto the scene, she was equally helpful. Now there were two ladies at the knitting table, and they interjected with their advice, too, and I trusted them right away by the looks of their expert knitting. The only caveat is that this is not yet a one stop shop. For hooks and needles, yes; they have every size and style anyone would need in wood and metal; even ergonomic square needles made of birch and dyed in pretty colors. But if you want notions to complete more whimsical projects (i.e. filling for stuffed animals, wool felt pieces), then you will have to go elsewhere until further notice This store is not yet a year old, and thus deserves a lot of slack in its yarn selection, which makes up for completeness in variety, anyway. Here, I saw yarn made of PURE raw silk ($14 for 50 yards, yet still difficult to resist), pure linen, washable kid-friendly cotton/wool, merino, cashmere, viscose blends, wrapped varieties, and sock-weight elastic wool...in addition to Bernat's wildly colored acrylics and worsted cottons at $5 for a 197-yard skein. The only downfall to this is the limitation to very high or very low brands, fewer cotton options now that summer's over, and lack of non-neutral shades you might desire. This is not a knock against the business, just full disclosure in case people who see the unanimous five star ratings arrive expecting an exhaustive library of colors and fibers (remember, this is Windsor Terrace, people!). However, the owners mentioned that they were continuously expanding their collection of yarns. That aside, Argyle will likely have SOMEthing that you need or want, and in the end, it will be hard to rein yourself in from spending a hundred bucks or more by stockpiling the ingredients for ten prospective projects! Most important, the meticulous but not patronizing team of knitting experts here (both staff and frequent customers) will apparently go to the ends of the earth to guide your purchasing decisions, whether or not you follow through with them all! It's soothing to know there's a knitting shop worth its salt within walking distance from my apartment, and to know that I could comfortably bring my work there if I wanted to get out of the house or receive consultation by people who actually know what they are doing. A pleasant walk it is, too; really whets the appetite to knit a whole pile of cozy goodies. I'll be back...with my friends, too! read more

I love this place. Honest, helpful, and polite. I came here for beginning knitting classes about a year ago. The teacher was very through, and I really walked away thinking I got a good understanding of how to start to knit. I am thinking of taking classes again and when I called to sign up for the same beginner class because I don't remember ALL of what I learned last year, they didn't try and sell me on the same class, but suggested I take the next level class which would actually save me money. Argyle Yarn Shop ("AYS") gets an A+ in my book. First my disclaimer, I didn't come here to shop, I came here to take their Beginner Knitting class after deciding that I wanted to patronize a shop in Brooklyn (my hometown) and looking for the most reasonably-priced class I could take. From the moment you walk into AYS you know you're in for a treat. The owners, David and Esther, are extremely helpful. David helped me more than Esther because she was with another customer, but he greeted me with a big hello and a handshake and helped me find the materials I needed for the class. Kate, the instructor, is a delightful knitting instructor who is patient, knowledgeable, and just plain adorable. There's no way you could dislike her. She had an uncanny ability to know exactly what I was asking, even though I wasn't using the correct lingo yet. She was a skilled instructor, in my opinion, and after just two hours working with her I've already learned two different ways to cast on, how to knit and how to purl, the garter stitch, the stockinette stitch, the seed stitch, how to add a new ball of yarn, and two different ways to cast off. By the end of the class Kate had me well on my way to making my first knit scarf, and not in any plain old pattern. I will definitely be back for other classes with Kate, and, next time, for some good old fashioned yarn shopping. read more

First things first, this place is so pretty and clean. Being the only knitter in my family, I was surprised at how excited the other members of my family seemed after seeing Argyle open. I am always looking for an excuse to go inside and buy something, so lets pile on the projects! All of the yarn is gorgeous, well organized, reasonable priced, and CLEAN. I cannot express how many times I have gone into a random shop and the yarn felt like it was leaving something on my hand. The woman who I am assuming is the owner working is extremely nice, and is very helpful in looking for things or answering questions. And they wind the yarn!!!! I live in Park Slope but I was in Windsor Terrace and stopped in for some help. My girlfriend needed double point needles to finish a baby's hat and she hasn't gotten around to buying them so I decided to visit Argyle Yarn Shop and buy them for her. I supplied the employee with the unfinished hat and needles and she quickly found the right set of double point needles. The lady was super friendly and totally cool. Compared to other knitting stores I have been to this store was really well organized and super clean. The price was right for the needles. Though it is a little walk from park slope, I would totally go here and recommend it to friends. read more

Highly recommended!! In fact, just go there now. When visiting Brooklyn I found this wonderful shop. Not only do they carry my favorite yarn, Quince and Co, but the couple who own Argyle are so nice, knowledgable, accommodating and altogether wonderful. It was so nice walking out of a store with a bag full of Quince Osprey knowing that I got to buy it from great people. If I lived near this store, I would probably be happier with it as my LYS. I made it out there to check them out because they are the only store in the state to carry Quince & Co, so I was disappointed to see that they did not carry the full color range. Not even close. It isn't that they are short on room, either--they have the space for it. Perhaps they do not want to carry too much inventory? Either way, the colors they tend to carry are in the drab pastel range, and I was specifically looking for some Sparrow to complete a project. I guess I will just have to order it online. read more

I've come back here a few more times after my first review and feel obliged to update it. The women that work here have been nothing but helpful and friendly. I'm an indecisive shopper 100% and with eyes bigger than my wallet, it takes me a while to finally decide what I'm going to purchase. The ladies here express their willingness to assist me and don't follow and hover over me while I'm figuring out whether I should really buy another $22 Malabrigo Rasta skein or just go with the necessities that I came for, for now. After a couple months I've gone from 100% knitting newbie to 100% yarn addict with hardly any remorse. Upon learning about different yarn / notion brands and what's popular, I've learned to truly appreciate the wonderful and vast selection that they carry. I always look forward to finding my newest skein here as well as some knit chat with the ladies. They are all very experienced in this craft and I have nothing but good things to say about this business as a whole. It's so refreshing, to say the least. Pro tip: They will wind your yarn for you for $1 per skein. But try not to come in with 30 skeins at once, little bit crazy. read more

This place is great! My main gripes with local yarn shops are that they don't have enough of a selection and what they do stock is too expensive. Argyle does a better job than most on both fronts. They stock all the usual premium yarns you'd expect to find and have a small but adequate budget section. If they expanded that a little bit, I'd give them five stars. While I can usually find a suitable yarn there for any project I'm working on, I sometimes have to compromise on the color I had in mind in order to find a yarn that will work. I've also noticed that they often only have a few skeins of the yarns they stock, which is a minor nuisance. They're happy to order stuff in but it's not as convenient as being able to collect it all at once (plus, repeat visits are dangerous to my budget, although good for their profits!). The staff are all knowledgeable and happy to spend time explaining things and helping you find the right products. Last weekend, I needed help deciphering an ancient pattern from the 1970s, which was written before the standardization of needle sizes. Despite the fact that this was one of their busiest days, they spent a good 15 minutes looking up the pattern on the internet for me (my phone had inconveniently died) and trying to work out the modern equivalents. I appreciated them going the extra mile for me. I've also seen them explaining basic techniques to novices. The location is also great - within walking distance of Park Slope, Windsor Terrace and Kensington (just about), which I know from my experiences with the local knitting club all have a high concentration of knitters. If business isn't already booming for Argyle, it's only a matter of time before it will be. The only place where I see a lot of room for improvement is their website - while they list the yarns they stock there, they don't give any information about the colors they have in or the weights of the yarns. Some photos and a bit more information would be useful. If I have a specific yarn in mind for a project, I'd prefer to be able to check they have it online before walking down to the shop. However, when I emailed them with this comment they helpfully sent me a list of yarns by weight. Provided I'm not looking for a specific yarn in a specific color, this will solve the problem. Regardless, Argyle is the best yarn shop in the area at the moment. read more

Argyle Yarn Shop can be viewed as a knitter's heaven. First, the owners Esther and David are so friendly and knowledgeable. They are my go to people for any project I need information on and if they don't have the answer rest assure they're clicking away in the Internet to try and get you one. Second, the classes are taught by this amazingly patient and experienced instructor named Kate. I can be a tough student and she was able to walk me through techniques that I was finding to be challenging. Kate goes at your pace so you don't feel rushed or held back. I've taken several classes and I've been able to complete some beautiful knitting pieces. I'm looking forward to taking the upcoming spectra scarf class. Third, their inventory offers an array of yarns, needles, cute accessories (i.e. needle cases). This is a one stop shop for all those interested in knitting. Last but not least I've meant an upbeat and helpful fellow knitter name Nancy who is a regular at the shop. She has provided me with some great suggestions on what yarns to use and patterns I should look into. read more

A little lost down in a less hip part of Park Slope this shop is worth the detour. I can only repeat what others have said - nice, bright space; VERY helpful, friendly staff; yarn displayed logically, and a good range without being overwhelming. They offered to wind the skeins I bought up into balls for me and made sure I knew that I could return the unwound skein within three months if I realised I didn't need it. On top of that a couple of days later I decided I really did need a ball of yarn I'd spotted in their bargain bin so I phoned to see if it was still there .. they checked on computer then actually went to look in the bin to double check so I didn't have a wasted journey and were quite happy to put it on one side - a lot of hassle for a seven dollar sale. They'll get more of my custom in the future that's for sure. read more

My favorite yarn store ever. This place is small but bursting with so many different kinds of yarn and knitting supplies. I have better luck finding what I need here than at other larger, fancier shops. They have a good selection of laceweight yarn and the color offerings are always changing so buy enough of what you need and check back often to see what's new. I also find the prices to be the best I've encountered anywhere. They offer to wind your yarn up into balls as well. No attitudes from staff here either. So to sum up: great selection, great prices, great customer service. This store is just happiness. read more

If I were to design my ideal yarn shop, this would probably be it... The owners could not be friendlier, the selection could not be more perfect and the space could not be more charming. So many yarn shops are either too small & cramped or too big and overwhelming - this is exactly the right size and carries pretty much everything I think I'd ever want/need. Even my husband, who cringes at the thought of being dragged to another yarn shop, could admit that this was a pretty fantastic place. So glad to now call AYS my LYS! read more

This is a local yarn shop that has one of the largest selections of high quality yarn I've ever experienced. I visit yarn shops throughout the world, and this is my favorite! It is also a beautiful community space, and Kate is single-handedly responsible for my extensive knitting knowledge. There is never a time when I have an "emergency knitting disaster" that they don't stop what they are doing to remedy the situation. Esther and David run a tight ship, they have vast knowledge of all things GOOD wool, and Kate is great teacher. That said, they allow shoppers to take their time, ask questions as they need to, and are NOT pushy salespeople...they are just THERE....they are experts!! read more

Discovering Argyle is a reason why it pays to take a walk in the neighborhood - otherwise I probably wouldn't have discovered it. As a rather tentative knitter, the most important service a knitting store can offer is customer support and Argyle surpassed any other knitting store I have been to in this regard. Esther was so helpful and patient . She searched online and then printed out a pattern that was within my comfort zone, helped me select beautiful but reasonably priced yarn, and demonstrated the key stitches. I left feeling that I could do this project ... but know that I can go back to Argyle with questions if I run into any difficulty. That's a great feeling. I came into the store first time and had no customer service until I asked the lady for help... They charged me extra for the needles but they offered to refund it which was nice but since I needed another ball of yarn, I decided to have my friend help me get it and put credit into the yarn instead. Later I emailed them 2 times and never got any replies. I guess they didn't like that but it was their mistake. So my friend paid for the yarn and They didn't even Wind my yarn and I had such a hard time cutting and untangling it and trying to look for instructions online on how to wind the yarn by hand.... What I appreciate so much about discovering this store in my neighborhood is the customer service and how above-and-beyond the owners go to help everyone and look up project information and answer questions. There's a patience, kindness and personable warmth there that sets the place apart -- from remembering everyone's name and what they're working on to hosting these lovely parties (there was a brunch they had recently to showcase Shibui yarn that was beautiful) -- all of it helps to foster this rare and valued sense of community. I've been to a few yarn stores in bk hanging off the tails of my knitter friends usually impatiently waiting until we could move onto our next destination. My mother-in law is an avid knitter and so for a good time we took her to this yarn store. It had good word of mouth so we went for it! I am sure glad we did because we had the loveliest experience there :-) The owners are really sweet and knowledgeable and get this..supportive! They had advice for the projects my mother-in-law had in mind, questions as to what we were looking for and words of encouragement for the newbie (that would be me) as well. It smelled great in there, there were many samples of 'end products' so you could see and feel what you were getting into and it was organized to be consumer friendly. Overall I would HIGHLY recommend this little gem of a store to the beginner as well as to the expert..they have something for everyone and they're really nice people too! read more

A valuable addition to the neighborhood and one I'll be frequenting. Walked in to buy knitting needles and yarn suitable for a beginner. The staff spent a good half hour educating me in the wide world of knitting, including showing me their vegan yarn when I said I didn't want to use wool. Bring your friends.
