Knitters/Crocheter's dream! Lovely shop on the UWS and full of the most beautiful yarns. Loved that the yarns on the walls were clearly marked in sections, narrowing down my search for my specific fiber. Of course I filled up my little basket to turn around and see more pretty yarns in the center of the shop...oh no! Haha.... I refuse to tell you how much I spent as I had already hit up another yarn shop the day before. The friendly clerks at the counter told me they could ship if needed...ha! I've already have more than I can crochet in a year, but thank you They gave me a cool reusable bag with their name on it, that I will use for my crochet projects at home now in California. I also earned points towards my next visit from my expenditures, of 20% on my next visit! Yippee, you know I'll be back. Beautiful yarns I felt reasonably priced for the quality. Super cute shop with an awesome variety of yarns. All different assortments of types and colors. I really enjoyed the wall of buttons. Staff did not hover at all and were helpful when asked. It was nice to not feel any pressure while perusing. Yarn in general can be pricey so the pricing here was average...not super expensive or super cheap. The sample squares were very nice when choosing the different weight of yarns and colors. Would recommend for any yarn enthusiasts! read more

I want to like this store, I really do. I want to support local, family owned business. I've gone here for years. The truth is, it's expensive & the staff is not friendly. The discount card system that they have is ridiculous-- they make it needlessly difficult to use/redeem. Not everyone on the UWS is wealthy & a smile goes a long way. I will buy my yarn on Amazon. Love the friendly busy vibe of this place. It's not my local so it's 2 subways away but I'd rather do that than shop at the unwelcoming east village yarn store that's full of hostile rules. The selection is extensive for a regular NY shop with many price points offered so I do sometimes end up buying the expensive Alpaca but also get a small acrylic for colorwork which means the finished item didn't cost a fortune. read more

Huge number of staff (at least 4 working) which I've never seen before. You will get helped quick, that's for sure. Overall I found the yarn selection mediocre and disappointing, despite there being so much. Bottom line for me: Not high quality and not a lot of local or NY-area yarns. The only local yarn I found was a blend of merino and acrylic. I found most of their yarns were blends which is surprising that skeins are still $28-30ea. There was a lot of cascade 220, which is a perfectly fine budget brand but still a budget brand (although the prices were not very budget). I also saw a lot of malabrigo. I wanted something local but wasn't willing to compromise on quality (wool only for me) so I left empty handed. I tried to make it work but didn't want to spend $30-120 on acrylic yarns read more

I love craft and go out of my way supporting small local businesses. The reality is as of late (they used to be lovely but that changed) this store does not have the same standards of practice or general business savvy that are in proportion to the good will and support that they receive from the community. This afternoon I was in the store, it was packed. My daugher purchased over 12 items spending several hundred dollars. It's overpriced, but like I said said, I go out of the way to support local businesses. There was a huge line, waited our turn and we paid. When we were waiting to have the yarn spun, I realized that my daghter had not gotten a new loyalty punch card (we were buying over 12 balls of yarn to make something for a charity auction). I had two choices, interrupt the very deep line and ask for the card, or, since the lovely gentleman spinning the yard, said that it would be a long wait, I would go to Fairway and come back. I did the latter and decided that since they had my yard that I had purchased I would get the discount card punched when I returned to pick up the yarn. An hour later, I returned, all the yard was spun, I picked up my bag, complete with recipts and had to buy a few more items. I purchased the other items and then asked for a punch card to reflect my purchases from an hour earlier. At this point, a very sour sales person/manager/person who knows very little about business etiquette said "no", they do not punch the loyalty cards after the fact because they don't know that I purchased the items. Althought it was clear, I explained that I had purchased the items, had them spun and picked them up mere minutes ago. In addition, I had all my receipts. She was adament about this, which made no sense. There was no sign posting this "policy" that a minute after they take my money they forgot all about my purchases, they knew I had purchased the items, because they had helped my with the initial selections and transaction. There was no reason for this behavior or to make it difficult. This is the first time I've been in the receiving end of their grumblesome nature, but have seen it before. Sorry Knitty City, keep in mind that you do not have anything unique in your offering, your products are the same as other stores and for those of us who like quaint stores in the neighborhood, you can be replaced by another chocolate shop, artisan jeweler artisinal spice store etc. You are not outstanding, and when that's the case, you need to work hard on customer service. Today the one employee took away all good will I had towards your establishment. I don't need your punch card. I live around the corner but I'm taking my business elsewhere as of now you don't deserve my customer loyalty. read more

I. Love. This. Place. It's SO cute! I recently decided to get back into knitting and this place is literally so cute. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it is a little pricey. But being in the upper west side, it is fitting for the neighborhood. They have a good selection of yarns, and after you buy yarn, they will spin it for you so it's much easier to knit. Everyone that works that I have interacted with has been helpful and will help you figure out what type of yarn is best for your particular project. They also help you figure out patterns that would work for you. Everyone is always so smiley in there, both other customers and staff. The inside is so cute, when you walk in you half expect it to also smell like freshly baked cookies or something because that is the cozy vibe it has. The least friendly knitting shop I've ever been to. I really want to love it because it's my local yarn store, but the ladies who seem to be permanent fixtures of the work table are very cold, unhappy to chat with anyone, tired of questions and inclined to help whomever does catch their interest regardless of how long anyone else has been standing in line. Are they regulars or staff members? Impossible to know. Three visits, three terrible experiences (and three times buying incredibly expensive yarn). Just went here for the first time and what a great spot! I was picking up yarn for a latch hook project, but after going here I think I need to get into knitting and crochet! Such a cozy atmosphere with a great selection. Staff seemed extremely knowledgeable. Prices were fair and though I don't know a ton about yarn their selection seemed very high quality. There are lots of yarn shops all over the city but this one seemed to pop up even when I started my search with Brooklyn based shops. When I arrived, I found a cozy shop and Zac was the first to come up and offer help. He was great giving me space to browse and helping me think through a project I had that was still kind of half formed when I walked in the door. The yarn selection was broad and there was plenty for me to choose from with lots more in the back store room when I needed more quantity of some colors I chose. Zac was very easy going and the general atmosphere felt familiar and helpful and friendly. Needless to say, I would certainly come back to the UWS just to shop here again. The only thing I think was missing was a wide selection of needles but they had good ones available. That said, it was a selection on par with any other shop. I love how progressive, feminist and helpful the staff is, how great of a yarn selection, needles and notions they have in the space and you have to love their rewards program with punch in cards! They have offered to special order yarn colors before when they haven't had enough for a project and are always friendly and supportive of all projects. I love visiting knitting shops when I'm in a different city. This one happened to be around the corner from my brothers apartment in nyc. It has a very friendly atmosphere. Personnel welcomed me immediately when I entered. The store is packed with beautiful yarns, mostly luxury fibers. They also had a great selection of books, an increasingly rare occurrence. I was tempted to purchase one of the fun knitting shirts. Room in my suitcase & emptiness in my wallet held me back. Look forward to a return visit. read more

Once upon a time....I wish I could tell you when....there were 17 --I kid you not -- yarn stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn, maybe Manhattan alone...as I said it was a long time ago. But there were very few yarn stores according to many knitters who came to NYC. Now, does that not seem contradictory ? Well, yes and no....On the one hand, there were lots of stores, on the other hand, the customer service in nearly all of these stores was so abysmal that knitters from out of town would ask you "how can you shop in a place where they treat you like this ?" Then, suddenly, more than ten years ago, Pearl Chin opened Knitty City.. I was accidentally there the day she opened, and we have all never looked back. (In the meantime, for one reason or another, most of the 17 disappeared.) No place is more welcoming, more packed with wonderful products and staffed with terrific, friendly people than Knitty City. Knitty City has beautiful yarn, but my visit to the store today was less than pleasurable. There was a line of six people waiting to check out or were in the need of help (I was number three in line and the person in front of me was also complaining about how bad the service was). There were four individuals available to assist these people, but one was winding yarn, two were standing there chatting and a third was actually helping the people in line. The gentleman in the store could barely stand to help me with my questions. I am not sure I will be returning to this knit shop even though it has great yarn. read more

Returned after a long absence! There were 3 workers there and a ton of customers. My daughter and I shopped for yarn for her to re-learn knitting. My other kid sat at the front table and watched as three people were spinning on drop spindles. There was so much to see, this place is overflowing with knitting supplies! We were easily able to find appropriate yarn for her and I showed restraint and didn't get anything for myself. Pearl manned the register and was clipped as she usually is with me. Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! I wish I lived in NYC to take advantage of this wonderful community here at Knitty City! They carry nice yarn to high end yarn. Location is convenient and the staff is helpful and friendly. It's interesting that people will complain that the yarns are expensive... but good yarn IS expensive! It takes a lot of work to raise the animals... then shear them... then process the fiber and spin and dye. If you want to work with crunchy acrylic, then stick with shopping at Michael's... but frankly putting in all that work and effort to knit/crochet something with acrylic is akin to making a fancy dish with subpar ingredients. It's going to only be as good as the yarn it is. Store is on the small side but it is lovingly cramped and warm. Pearl, the owner along with her staff are extremely welcoming! Great books, fun classes in knit, crochet and for kids classes too. Even a mens only knitting class during the week! This cozy colorful store filled with helpful knitters is my new favorite place. My goal was to get a pattern for a sweater and the necessary yarn. Not only did the woman give me an amazing pattern, but she suggested yarn that didn't cost a fortune since it's my first time knitting a sweater. In addition to having a selection of quality yarn, this place has advice in spades. I came in with a friend on a Saturday afternoon with nothing but the muscle memory of some old stitches and the idea to do an easy project to get my sea legs back. Enter Nancy! Not only was Nancy kind and patient enough to recommend needle sizes and yarn weight for our scarves. She even took the time to cast on for both of us.
