This was my first time at Woolyn and I had only heard of it from the yarn crawl. I know some people mentioned that an older lady (potentially the owner) could be a little unfriendly / irritated by customers, but I had a decent experience at Woolyn. The vibe wasn't my favorite and the customer service could definitely be more inviting, but it was okay enough for me to buy some yarn. Will I return? I went to Woolyn for the first time this week. I got a one on one knit lesson from Chelsea, who was wonderful. I have a vintage pattern I was working with - Chelsea and Rachel were very impressive with their knowledge of the history of knit patterns and materials. They explained how things were written back in the 50's vs what they mean in today's language. If I never came to Woolyn - I would have been doing the entire pattern wrong. Chelsea was a great teacher. She walked me through a pattern a helped me pick materials and explained why I should be doing things certain ways. While on my own, I got a little confused and messed something up... I popped in the next day and Rachel sat down with me, fixed my project and explained what went wrong. I really appreciate the extra effort! I'll be coming back for an additional lesson on DPNs soon. Thank you all so much for the help! read more

My least favorite yarn shop in all of NYC. I've been in three times and the woman who owns the shop always seems more irritated that she has to speak to me than she is helpful. We did buy some yarn but they refused to wind it for us because there was a knitting class, but it was more the way they said it than the refusal- like we were unreasonable for having asked. The young woman who works there is very nice though. I found a beautiful skein of anzula that I was thinking of purchasing but when I turned it over I found that it had been so sun damaged on one side that it would be completely unusable. A few other skeins I picked up were rather the worse for wear as well. It's 3 blocks from my house and I was hopeful, but I will not be returning. read more

I agree with another commenter the customer service was horrible and the owner seemed annoyed that I wasn't sure about what I wanted. I'm a New Yorker so I used to some people having bad attitudes, but for a small business customer service is paramount. I regret giving them money should just purchased online. read more

Woolyn and Rachel are awesome! I took a private crochet class Saturday with Rachel and it was the perfect rainy day to sit down in a chill, cozy environment, listen to the incoming shoppers' stories of what they love to create and why, and learn a new skill that might have dropped off in my family in my generation. Rachel was incredibly patient and explained the steps in a way that I could grasp easily, as was not the case in the previous YouTube videos I had tried. She helped me choose yarn that best suited my project and I can't wait to go back for more colors. I just finished my first pot holder- my goal- and while I still need to practice, I did it! I was in the area so I decided to buy some yarn for a pattern I really liked and wanted some pretty yarn for. The place was nice and neat but I didnt feel comfortable the lady asked if i needed some help when I said no" I was just trying to find something i liked for my kid" she ran away before I even finished my sentence. Though I usually like to be ignored when I'm shopping. I just didn't like the vibe. I get more from the workers at the craft shop down the street. I bought the only skein left in the color way I wanted and left. I ended up buy two more skeins of the colorway from the company's website. I might comeback if I need something in a hurry but otherwise I will get my yarny goodness straight from the source like I always do. read more

The Good: Woolyn is a small shop with an average selection of yarns. It's pretty and colorful on the inside--but that's just standard fare for a yarn or fabric shop. There are a few nice brands of yarn, most of which are local, which is pretty cool. The shop also has a good amount of tools for spinning your own yarn. The Bad: But, it's fucking pricey! They sell sets of stitch markers for almost $30. Also, there's only a small selection of budget yarns, like the kind you might use for a baby blanket or baby clothes. I don't think the prices are justified. Also, small selection of knitting needles. The Ugly: Finally, I'd like to echo the other reviewers who have complained that the customer service here is particularly lacking. They don't seem to know what they have in stock, and one of the women working there (the owner, maybe?) seemed irritated that I interrupted her knitting. Moral of the story: If you're looking for stuff to spin, this shop is a good resource. For anything else, I'd say make the trip into Manhattan and go to Knitty City--that shop has several people working at once, and has a much broader selection of yarns and patterns. read more

I was not pleased with the crochet lesson I had here. The original woman who was going to give me the lesson sat down and didn't even introduce herself. She didn't seem to know what she was doing (I was asking to be taught a specific granny square). I asked for Rachel to give me the lesson, which she did, but there were many many distractions and she wasn't focused on the lesson. I left VERY discouraged, but since have found a lovely woman online who comes to my home and am making great progress. (I found her through take lessons.com). I do not recommend Woolyn. read more

A new yarn store in Brooklyn that really gets what it means to be a knitter/crafter in 2016 in a city. They have more indie yarn dyers than I've seen in an LYS outside of (the now closed) Lettuce Knit, and so many NYC makers (many new to me!), including indie dyed yarn, hand spun yarn, project bags and stitch markers. Rachel, the owner, is all about supporting small business, local business, and that shows with practically everything in the shop. (She also has the coolest knitting tattoo...) If you're into spinning, or have been curious about it, this is the place to go in NY. There's a whole spinning corner full of indie dyed fiber, which isn't just your typical merino, but also polwarth, bamboo blends, BFL, falkland, all of the things! She also has little sample bags of wool, camel, and silk if you want test out a new type of fiber. The only downside of the store is that the cafe isn't open yet! But once it is there will be local coffee, local tea, and local snacks to go with your local yarn and accessories. Seriously, if Woolyn doesn't put the 'L' in LYS, I don't know who does. read more

Woolyn is a great gem of a yarn store. The owner and salespeople are very knowledgeable. They will give you help, or just let you browse without pressure. Woolyn has a lot of fiber you won't find in other shops. They carry a lot of yarn dyed by independent dyers in swoon-worthy colors. Woolyn is also one of the only sources of fiber for spinners. Looking forward to increasing my already ridiculously sized yarn stash! read more

The emphasis is on independent dyers--such as Mollygirl, Narwhal Needlework, Invictus, JulieSpins, to name a few--but you can also find some of the old faithfuls like Cascade 220. Woolyn complements the other great yarn shops in Brooklyn and Manhattan; enthusiasts will find yarn and fibers not available elsewhere. The staff is very welcoming and super helpful. Woolyn is a great addition to the NYC yarn scene and one of my favorite places to visit. read more

The shop has a nice layout - able to see the variety of yarns and other fiber art supplies there. I live out of state so I thought it would be a treat for me to find the Yarn Over New York dyed yarns - I follow them on instagram - I was sooooo disappointed in the lack of customer service - I don't know who it was that was there that day - owner? employee? ~ but, they certainly did not seem as though they were interested or comfortable with extending a little hospitality my way. I told the person how excited I was to find the YONY yarns and that I wish I had been there for the trunk show - my comments seem to have fallen on deaf ears {I was the only customer in the shop at this time} - the person there did say there were getting ready for Vogue Knitting Live - but, guess what? I was there in person - ready to spend some $$ - I did buy two things - and would have purchased more - because I was starting to feel uncomfortable just being in the shop - I recognized a lot of names on items who sell through Etsy - so I guess I'll buy direct from now on. There are so many lovely yarn stores tucked away in little corners of New York City and Woolyn on the border of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill is definitely one of them. The shop includes a very curated collection of indie dyers and beloved go-to yarns, all selected for their quality and uniqueness. The folks at Woolyn really know their stuff and are excellent teachers if you are a beginner. The shop stocks a top selection of needles and fiber accessories, many by local makers. Also notable are supplies and roving for spinners. There is a computer for customers to look up a pattern for yardage or browse Ravelry looking for one and a big table in the center if you need to sit down and knit for a while. The owner is incredibly knowledgeable about all things fiber and can help with any question you might have. All in all a welcome addition to the neighborhood. read more

whenever I go to Woolyn, I feel like I've come home -- to a beautiful welcoming store with everything one would need for knitting, crochet, spinning, etc. Rachel is running a wonderful shop, and makes sure that anyone from the new knitter to the old (like yours truly) has what they need in the form of supplies, gadgets, magazines, books, you name it! I had a wonderful experience in the store with the lovely person who initially helped me. She was great! Unfortunately, she did not explain to me that any used skeins would not be returnable. I specifically said I might need to return a skein and she assured me it would not be a problem. When I called the store today the owner was exceptionally rude, cut me off twice and just said the receipt says exchanges only. When I called back again to say I'm not sure she has fully trained her staff to communicate her policy clearly (I believe the woman who helped me initially would have communicated this if better trained), I was cut off by her again without any sort of sincere apology. I worked in retail for years and this is not the way to retain a potentially new customer. I don't advocating supporting a business with a owner who clearly cares more about policy stamped on a receipt than about treating her customers respectfully and keeping them happy. I absolutely will not be back and will advocate that my knitting circle stop using this store as well. read more

Woolyn is a beautiful store and has many great yarns. Last year I bought a pretty yarn from them and then realized that I needed another skein, so I gave them a call and asked them to pull one aside for me. They confirmed that they had the yarn. I drove there which took about 45 minutes, paid for street parking, and then entered the shop to pick up the skein. They said that they didn't have it and would have to order one, which could take a week. They didn't offer an apology for having me trek out there after they mistakenly told me that they had the yarn. I have shopped there a few more times since the skein mix up, and yesterday when I came in, I was the only person in the store. The person who I think owns the shop was sitting at the counter working on a knitting project. Whenever I spoke to her, it seemed like I was interrupting her and she didn't care what I was asking her about. Her knitting project was more important than my business, so in the future I will be taking my business to Argyle located in Windsor Terrace where I consistently receive great customer service. read more

Not a very extensive collection but good enough if you need a skein or two. It's a beautiful store and has all the charm needed for a neighborhood yarn shop. Unfortunately, the owner is not friendly. I've been a few times and have never received good customer service. I worked in a yarn shop for a few years and I know there's a better way to make customers feel welcome. Ask about what project the customer is making, invite them to sit down and knit at the table, encourage them to talk through a problem they might be having. Don't behave as though the customer is bothering you or speak down to them because they are only buying a skein or two. You don't know what they are up to unless you ask, and you will lose out on business by not engaging with customers. There's a new store in Park Slope and many other spots worth trying out. I'm sad that my local shop won't work out for me. read more

I have visited Woolyn several times, both during slow and busy, promotional days, and have consistently received poor customer service and have felt unwelcome in this LYS. As a young but experienced knitter, this is the only time in the city that I have felt ignored and talked down to several times by the employees and owner when browsing and looking for specific yarns. The selection is interesting, and their trunk shows have always looked unique, but my questions and presence are often ignored. If I have a question about a pattern or want to explore new yarns I will be taking my business to Argyle in the neighborhood, which has been much friendlier and welcoming to knitters that do not fit the usual profile. read more
