I love this place. I come every summer I'm on the island and always look forward to it. My favorite is the salmon oshi sushi.

The fish is fresh and that's all that matters. The fish is standard fare, salmon, tuna, yellow tail, eel, shrimp, but it's good quality. Nothing special but surprisingly good. The prices are fair too. I ordered a bunch of nigiri and 1 roll. It was all good. The inside looks a little janky but don't let that deter you. Ok. So... you're on an island. An island where, as far as I can tell, only boasts two sushi joints. ... and you need sashimi. Arigato's got it pretty good. With only one other joint on SSI, it's pretty easy to boast the "best sushi" title but don't let that lead your expectations astray. Would Arigato lead the pack on the mainland? No. Straight up. You are not about to walk into award winning sushi love. It was pretty standard sushi - middle of the pack on the mainland sushi - not exceptional but not bad by any standard. There is no table service here. You order at the counter and they will bring it out to you (or shout it across the restaurant... I think it depends if you're a regular or not). The prices are pretty shockingly high, but again, it's one of two sushi joints on a small island. So they can give'er. What went down: Started with Gyoza and I'd highly recommend this dish. It was perfectly cooked and came out piping hot. Definitely tasty. Assorted Sashimi - tuna, salmon & red snapper - ok... the sashimi curse continues. Dead sushi gods, give me a break & a perfect salmon sashimi would ya? The sashimi wasn't bad but it was frozen. Not rock solid but... popsicle consistency. A lightly melted fish popcicle... That makes it sound icky, which it wasn't - the fish was actually quite tasty, it just gave us brain freeze... Salt Spring Roll - prawn, cucumber, unagi, spicy salmon - they threw everything and the kitchen sink on this one and dang it was good. Eat this. Alaska Roll - I found this one pretty decent but my partner-in-dine thought it tasted a bit "metallic". It's definitely on the lighter side. All in all. Decent. Pricey but decent. If you're on SSI - yes... go there for sushi... if you NEED sushi. But Vancouverites be warned - you ARE going to be a snob about it. read more

The sushi here is really bland. But I wouldn't even bother to leave a review about it if not for the horrible way the staff treated us. My partner ordered me salmon nigiri and they gave us smoked salmon nigiri. When he went back in to correct it (very calmly by the way, as we were not upset), they got angry at him, told him they gave him what he ordered, and lectured him about ordering the correct thing. And then the woman followed him back out to the car yelling about how he ordered the wrong thing and it was his fault! I went in to pick up the new sushi and they started yelling at me right away, telling me my partner was "lying" and he had ordered smoked salmon. Even though he would never have ordered that - since we didn't even know smoked salmon nigiri was a thing as we think that is gross - even if he *had* made a mistake this is an awful way to treat your customers. I feel it really says a lot about the success of a business when the owners react that way - clearly they were upset to lose out on the cost of the smoked salmon. What businesses like this fail to realize however is that the cost of treating customers that way is far more - over the coming years we no doubt would have spent thousands of dollars there as there are so few sushi places on the island. I ended up leaving without taking the new sushi because I couldn't stand the way they were speaking to me. It was honestly appalling. We didn't even want any food made by them at that point even though we had paid for it. It was our second time there and the sushi was just as bland as the first, plus we had this awful experience. No one else was even in there so it's not as if they were super busy. It takes a lot for us to not return to a place but unfortunately we will not be going back. Screaming at your customers and blaming them is a hard no for us. read more

Very fresh and amazing sushi!!!! A hidden gem in this beautiful island. Ben and Joanna are very friendly and kind. Their miso soup, Alaska roll, scallop roll, eel sushi are sooooo yummy!!! I make sure to visit Ben and Joanna whenever I am in town. I highly recommend their sushi!! read more
