It is one of the hardest restaurant to make a reservation. Luckily, I got a reservation 7-8months ago. Menu: Chawan mushi - steamed egg custard with vegetable(bean, shimeji mushroom) and seafood(shrimp and slice of fish) Ankimo - Monkfish Liver with seasonal seafood(scallop and shrimp) Grilled black cod, with saikyo miso and marinated blue fin tuna and cooked egg. Tenpura - seafood (slice of fish, seafood stuffed vegetable and vegetable(shiitake) 9 pieces of sushi Daily miso soup - clam Dessert - kinako and mitarashi dango Chawan mushi was great. I can taste fish based broth and egg custard was very silky and smooth. Decent amount of ingredients sush as shrimp, slice of fish , bean and shimeji mushroom. I wish they served it slightly cooler than too hot. Ankimo - Great item. Monkfish liver was rich and paired with scallop and shrimp so well. Sauce was just ok. Grilled black cod was another great item. Crispy and juicy, just perfectly done. Blue fine tuna was covered by salty marinated sauce which was great when wrapped with seaweed. Cooked egg was just ok Tenpura - Seafood stuffed vegetable was my favorite. Others were also decent. Highlight and stand out item was 9 pieces of sushi. Honmaguro(bluefine tuna) was good. Shari(sushi rice) was nicely seasoned with vinegar, very mild and which I liked it. Tuna was delicious. Sea breem(MADAI) was another good piece. Delicious. Aburi Toro was nicely seared. I wish this item could be a bit more softer and buttery, but it was still good. Akaebi(red shrimp) and Hokkaido sea urchin - Lightly torched the top of sea urchin and its smokiness brought out more sweetness flavor of Akaebi(red shrimp) Hokkaido Scallop - Very smooth, soft and nice texture. Delicious. Kinmedai(Gold eye snapper) -- My favorite. Texture was very soft and chewy, It was great item. Hokkaido sea urchin - Actually, this one was just ok. I wish it could be more creamy. Unagi - One of the best item. It was so fluffy and soft right after chef cooked and served. This is a must try item. Daily miso soup with clam - I can taste fish broth (dashi) flavor so well. Clam was delicious. It was good. Dessert - Kinako coated mitarashi dango -It was nicely chewy and soft. I wish there were more sauce on it. Overall, it worth visiting this place. The only problem is that so hard to get a reservation. Hopefully, I can get next reservation, may be next year. read more

Small, authentic spot offering delicious and fresh omakase. Make sure you book early though as they have a long wait. We love Japanese cuisine so I decided to surprise the hubby with an omakase for his birthday in January. Unfortunately, they have a 6-month wait and I was not prepared so I ended up booking it for our anniversary in May. The food was phenomenal and delicious! I love the chawanmushi loaded with goodies inside. The ankimo (monkfish liver) dish was so tasty with the scallop and prawn. Black cod was cooked to perfection! The nigiris are all so fresh. We quickly put ourselves on the waiting list for after September so we can come here again soon! There's a parking lot just next door. The place inside is small and intimate. After six months of waiting we are here again at Yugafu! And we enjoyed our meal just as much as we enjoyed it on our first visit. Much of the omakase menu is the same with some slight change in the main and the dessert. The main they changed to a grilled miso black cod with a octopus appetizer. And the dessert was changed to a steamed red bean bun. The meal has a very nice homey feel in a sense with quality ingredient that makes it a lovely elevated omakase experience! Service is always very friendly with two staff - the chef and the host. Even with the two they are able to accommodate all their tables timely with considerable attentiveness. The absolute friggin best omakase and cheapest in price! In 2024, they increased the price to $88 per person, it's still a fraction of the cost to what other Japanese restaurants charge, as all other places are charging an average of $200 per person these days. We arrived to this cozy authentic Japanese restaurant and were seated promptly. The female owner gave us hot green tea and hot towel to start with. Then just shortly after a few minutes, dishes started coming in one by one. Each and every dish is delicious, scrumptious, fresh and perfectly seasoned. It's soooo good that I actually cried (yes, happy touching tears). Pace of each dish was great, we finished everything within 1.5 hour. Service was very attentive, and it's such a delight to watch the chef making the nigiri in front of us. The only complaint is that they are super booked up, and you have to reserve really far in advanced. But with such amazing quality and unbeatable price, I can definitely see why! I've been hearing great reviews about this place for months and couldn't believe how busy this place is and it's all the way it in Surrey. I made a reservation for this past weekend all the way back in March and when I asked if there were any reservations left for 2023, they said they were completely booked up! My 3 friends and I arrived at 6pm and we were promptly served hot matcha tea and a hot tea towel - nice! There's only 2 tables and a few more seats at the bar so a pretty cozy restaurant. There's apparently parking next to the restaurant but all my friends and I were able to find free street parking. We all ordered the $80 omakase set that featured 8 courses - a steal compared to the $150 to $200+ omakase sets in Vancouver. Each course was fresh, delicious, and a perfect amount - enough to satisfy and more than 2 bites. Each course had us excited for more and it was sad when it all ended as every dish was SO good. Hard to pick a favourite course but if I had to, my favourites were the monkfish liver with shrimp (hard to find and this was executed so well as a refreshing appetizer salad) and of course, the amazing 9 pieces of assorted nigri. Each piece of nigri was melt in your mouth buttery smooth, fresh, and just so damn good. This place doesn't do take out or do walk ins so make sure to make a reservation, or ask to be put on the wait list for last minute cancelations. My friends and I all agreed that it's one of the best omakase sets in Metro Vancouver for its quality and price. This was my second visit to Yugafu and the only "complaint" I have is it is difficult to get into as it is super popular! And for good reason. The whole operation is run by a really kind Japanese couple, who is very attentive and consistent with the quality of food. My personal favourite is the little wrap dish with the radish, which is served as a palate cleanser before the nigiris. This tastes SO refreshing, clean, and light - I could eat ten of these. All the nigiris also taste super fresh. I also loved how the tempura actually appears to have been fried in clean oil, as evidenced by its colour. The steamed egg speaks for itself - the egg itself is so soft and fine, but the vegetables/shrimp in it maintain its texture/integrity. Although it may be a bit of a drive, I highly recommend dining here for their kaiseki for $80/per person. The value is unmatched to the other kaiseki's I've had in Vancouver. I've added my name to the cancellation list on behalf of my parents - I know they'll love it, too. If you have the opportunity to go, make sure you sort out your next reservation while you're there! read more

This place is unbelievable!!! Easily my favorite Japanese place in Vancouver... and for $70? IT IS A STEAL! The presentation is easily a 5/5. Absolutely amazing and the attention to detail is unbelievable. Food quality is a solid 4.5/5. Everything was good with a few standout dishes. Value is easily a 5/5. $70 for Omakase that includes more than nigiri is unheard of! Overall, love this place and highly recommend! What a hidden gem of a place in Surrey! We ordered the Kaiseki set for $70 per person and it was such a steal! The 9 piece nigri set in particular was a highlight with the bluefin, scallop, and uni! All the different dishes had such unique and explosive flavours and we were left always excited for the next dish to come. We also got two sakes - Dewazukura and Otokayama which was the perfect drink to pair with our meal. We highly recommend making a trip out to Surrey for Yugafu and can't wait to book our next reservations! And reservations are definitely a must as they book quite far in advance. Not a lot of Japanese restaurants in Greater Vancouver offer omakase , let alone in Surrey/Langley ! Tucked away in the Clayton Heights area this is one helluva find . We started with a chawan mushi , then 5 different kinds of chef choice appetizers , and then comes the main draw of the night : 9 expertly-crafted pieces of nigiri , among them two different kinds of uni ( local and Hokkaido ! ) . If only they're accompanied by freshly-grated wasabi but that probably would be asking too much . While they only open in the evenings we noticed for the duration of our meal there were only 1 sushi bar diner and 2 table of patrons ( ours included ) and it was a Sunday night . This place hidden gem. Surprisingly found in Surrey/Langely and away from the hustle bustle of the big city, Yugafu is a small and incredibly charming place run by two super sweet people. They were so friendly I really wanted to support as much as possible. The omakase here is top notch. As the restaurant is small, the experience feels super intimate. All the ingredients are super fresh. The chef excitedly showed us a box of uni that had just arrived the same day. I have not had such good uni since I was physically in Japan at the Fish Market. The presentation of the food is exceptional and the inside decor is so cozy. I loved all the ceramics on display as well as used for the food. A dining experience at Yugafu is definitely authentic to one in Japan. I was ready to pay premium price for the incredible experience here but was shocked at how affordable the price point was. Yugafu does require reservations by phone. Plan ahead... like months ahead. This place is in high demand and they only take a small number of customers everyday. It might be a little difficult to snag a reservation but it is worth every effort. TLDR; LOVE LOVE LOVED THIS PLACE. A+ across the board. I have to say, they spoiled me!!! I had another Japanese a couple days later, it was in no comparison to Yugafu!! Their rice is the best I have ever tasted, it literally just melts in your mouth~~~ Although I must add that the vinegar they use on the rice is not what I usually taste in other Japanese restaurants. It's interesting. But I am more accustom to regular vinegar sushi rice. Their sashimi is sooooooo fresh!!!! I normally don't eat uni (sea urchin) as it can taste quite "wild". But their uni was so fresh that I actually want to order again. Deep-fried shrimp was so good as well. It is a must-try! I can't believe such quality authentic Japanese restaurant decide to open in Cloverdale/Langley. Usually, you can only find restaurants like this in Vancouver. read more

Yugafu is much more than a charming place--it was a real find in the suburbs. Last night, I had some of the best sushi and Japanese cuisine of my life here! We have eaten in Japan many many times over the years. Sushi and sashimi were fresh--superlative! Had the best scallop of my life--from Hokkaido. Several bites went right to that pleasure spot in the brain, happened a lot during the meal. I do not believe I saw California rolls on the menu, so this place is Japan.... The chef does oden--the winter soup dish, with all sorts of options. We had grilled food--amazing. He does an omakese for two--chef's choice of a several course menu. We had a chirashi don--assorted fish on lightly vinegared rice, perfect. If you are into sashimi and haven't tried chirashi don, it's a must. We had a braised pork, wonderful. The chuwanmushi was excellent (steamed egg and fish cooked in a ceramic cup). The chef's miso soup was excellent. There is a lot we are excited about on the menu that we will save for next time--there are 2 skewer sections on the menu, fried or grilled.. As part of the omakese, we had an import yellowtail, that was grilled to perfection. They do bentos and tempura too. Even the garnishes.... holy smokes.... the chef used two types of horseradishes (green and white), shiso leaves (not the plastic ones), the ginger was lovely (two types!). The horseradishes tasted homemade. The ceramics in the presentation were lovely, and there were chopstick covers from kimono fabric. The food presentation was beautiful--perfect. BTW, they did not have a liquor license quite yet, but we had some dealcoholized Japanese beer. Prices were more than reasonable--and slightly above a run-of-the-mill sushi place--an absolute bargain for the quality.... A lot of sushi places taste like TNT grocery--which is nice to eat and cheap, don't get me wrong--but Yugafu is not like that at all. It's high dining at reasonable prices. The couple running the place are lovely and friendly. In Japan, I remember patrons sitting at sushi counters, and the free and lively conversations that would happen between them and the sushi chefs. To see that familiar interaction in Cloverdale last night was an authentic Japanese experience--and super heartwarming. Full disclosure--I heard the chef came from a fancy restaurant in Vancouver, so we wanted to try it out. I do not know the chef, and I am not related to anyone there, just excited to find a real authentic high quality Japanese restaurant in the suburbs and not in Yaletown. This is an excellent and authentic Japanese restaurant. The chef is very professional as he himself is Japanese. Our family enjoyed the food so much. I'm so impressed that some ingredients of the meal were actually from Japan. The service there was awesome. She was a very respectful Japanese lady and I love her so much. Although I don't speak Japanese language, I tried to communicate some simple Japanese with her to show my gratitude. Overall speaking, this is the real Japanese restaurant I ever dined.
