Dr Stein and the medical staff were great. The admin and their system is where things seem to break down. They changed my first name to a letter. Literally. They claim they can't list me by my actual first name, because it's abbreviated on my insurance card. My insurance knows it's abbreviated and they have my full legal name. And even if their system is that complicated, there's no preferred name option? Really? So they will refer to me as a single letter instead of my actual name. I've never run into this problem before at a medical provider office and I've been to many using the same insurance card. Imagine being taken back to have a procedure done under anesthesia and the assistant you've never met tries to greet you but doesn't know what to call you because your name is missing on your paperwork, and it's just a letter. Imagine they try to call your driver back after you're done, and they don't know what to announce. Imagine you get texts after your procedure, referring to you as a single letter instead of your first name. That's exactly what happened, and I was really surprised. It's poor customer service. It creates confusion and discomfort when you're already in a vulnerable position. I work at a medical office and I can't imagine treating a patient like that. It's such a basic standard to call people by their name. I let the office know my concern and they said they can't do anything about it. I'll go elsewhere next time. read more

Tried to bill me for service after procedure, called the billing service, after them checking on it said it was a mistake. This was in March of 2025. It is now Sept. And got a call from a collection agency and they are trying to collect the amount. Call doctor office back and told them and they said they would have someone investigate it and get back to me. Looks like I might have to file a complaint with the AZ attorney general office that they are trying to extort money from me. My insurance company said that I do not own them anything. Started the process in early October around the 2nd 2024, made an appointment. I explained reason for visit, and also mentioned that are previous doctor said I had issues. Appointment was October 22nd initial consultation. Everything went smoothly, PA seemed nice. Procedures scheduled for the 4th of November. I missed a call sometime around 23rd to the 28th (due to a ton of spam calls from polls due to election), I heard the voicemail saying I had issues with billing authorization on Monday, I called the old clinic on Tuesday to get "Billing Authorization Withdrawaln", this other clinic does not have a phone number to the front desk, so I had to call multiple times trying different numbers like billing, scheduling, management, I didn't hear back from them, so on Wednesday I called mesa gi in the morning and talked to nice lady, and she said they hadn't heard anything from them. So I continued calling the old clinic, later that day I got on the phone with someone who was super rude, and told me I never called her back. I didn't bother correcting her even though I had called that morning and talked to billing. I don't remember if they re-ran billing authorization, but I do know that we rescheduled the procudure to the 7th. I got in contact with my insurance and asked if they could withdraw the old billing authorization, they said no, I have to ask the clinic to resubmit it. I called them back and the nice lady, re-submitted it for me sometime before the 6th. She did so, and I took the 6th to fast, she called me back and said everything was good on Tuesday 2 days before precedure. Later that evening after fasting all day I got a call back from the rude lady saying billing authorization didn't go through, ans it was the same problem, she told me with glee that we couldn't go through the procedure. So we just cancelled it without rescheduling so we could get billing taken care of. On the 11th of October, I went to the old clinic and asked them if they could withdrawl billing authorization. They had no idea what I was talking about and told me that the new clinic would be the one to go to. They didn't know what I wanted or what the new office wanted and withdrawing billing authorization meant nothing to them, so I talked to my insurance again and got someone who game me specific instructions. 1. Contact old clinic 2. Have them write a letter stating the procedure was never done 3. Have the old clinic send it to the new clinic. 4. Have the new clinic re-submit the billing authorization as proof. I went to the old clinic, had them send a letter to the new clinic. Gave it a day to check in with the new clinic if they ever got the letter, I called them, left them a callback number. Waited, then sent a email in the portal. Silence. Having not heard back, I went to the new clinic in person on the 18th, talked to the desk lady, waited like 30 minutes and they said that they didn't have any faxes. So I left and went to the old clinic, they emailed me the letter, and then I called the new clinic back that I had emailed it to them. Silence, I messaged them back and forth leading up to thursday of that week, and they said that my email didn't have the letter attached, and then I re-attached it, and finally confirmed that they had it. I specifically have been giving them the instructions that my insurance provided me, and they didn't read, and told me that they are still waiting for insurance to let them know when they have the letter. Doesn't make sense because they didn't read my messages, or follow my instructions. So I followed up on Monday, and Tuesday today, trying to get them to resubmit it, because insurance takes 3-5 business days to review the submission. Today I of course, missed their call because I was in a business meeting, and got a voicemail, saying that the company doing the procedure says the billing authorization is still on and I need to call my insurance and have them withdraw it. Horrible experience. Called to make follow up appointment appt with dr. Was told account was in collections. When Asked about it they said they couldn't tell me anything and referred me to a debt collections service. It turns out that two office visit copays were due from a series of 3-visits in May 20224. I was told by the office assistant/receptionist during the second visit I didn't owe further copays. It wasn't until mid December when I called to make an appointment that I learned differently. My husband and I have been using this practice for more than 15 years without issue. Why didn't the office call, mail, or email either of us if payment was due? It seems they made no effort. and just sent us to collections. In our view a crummy way to handle patients of long and good standing. We/re taking our business elsewhere. I would have left this review on their website but you can't access it. and only good reviews are listed. The Chinese have a saying about leadership. " A fish rots from the head". I had my initial Dr. appointment at the end of Oct 2024 and was happy with the staff. Not blown over, mind you, but felt they were competent. A staff member met with me to go over finances. They required a $200.00 fee to hold my spot if you will. I was told someone would reach out prior to my procedure with an estimated cost of surgery. Well, all I got was a text message two days prior to my procedure (too late to cxl without paying a cancellation fee) with my estimated cost being 675.00. Fine...I thought that was a little high but I needed the procedure. Then after the surgery I got hit with a bill for an additional $300.00 and another bill for almost $600.00. I called a few times to try and figure out why I was being billed almost $900.00 more on top of the almost $900.00 I had already paid. The hold to get through to someone was ridiculous. I tried the option to leave a message and get a call back and got nothing. I finally took time away from work to sit on hold until a representative answered. Turns out the $200.00 I paid at my initial visit was not cost towards my surgery, but rather the fee to the dr. The 675.00 I paid day of surgery was a facility fee (in essence, the facility charges you rent to be in their building). The two additional costs I was charged after surgery were for the biopsy itself and the anesthesiologist. Neither of these fees were included in the "estimate" that I was provided prior to my surgery. I am sorry, but a facility fee is highway robbery. The dr. is charged a fee to use the facility and that cost should then be included in the fee I pay to the Dr. Not to mention when I went to look at my EOB the initial fee they tried to charge my insurance was $1200.00. I was there for less than 4 hours and in the procedure room for all of 15 min. Imagine if Target charged you a fee to walk around their store! As for the anesthesiologist; I knew this one was possible. I have been around long enough to know that the medical world has never corrected this terrible practice of not contracting with the anesthesiologist. However, when I saw that the full cost I was being charged would go to a deductible I called the office to ask them for what their cash price would be. I won't meet my ded this year so if the cash price was cheaper it would make sense to have them reverse they claim they filed with my insurance and just pay the cash cost. The representative told me the cash cost was the exact same amount as what I would owe on my deductible. Impossible! Then he told me it was against the lay for them to reverse my claim with the insurance and just charge me the cash cost. Again...no...just no. Now, I understand that Sunset Anesthesia and East Valley Endoscopy are separate entities from Arizona Digestive Health. But when you go to AZ Digestive Health you don't get a choice of the anesthesiologist or the facility that will be used. You are at their mercy that they are contracted with, and requiring you to use, reputable companies. You take them at their word that when you are going to get an estimate for the remaining amount that the price given will be for all remaining amounts within a margin if error. You hope that they are looking to make a buck, but not rip you off. Since AZ Digestive cannot seem to partner with the other required entities in a way that is easy for patients to understand and fair...I have to give them 2 stars. Do better! read more

I've had 2 visits here so far and have not had any issues. My first visit I met with Shauna RN who really listened to my history and made sure to cover every base. The front office was efficient and kind and I didn't wait long to be seen. They were able to get me in for appointments and procedures within a week or two. I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy with Dr. Stein mid-November and they were communicative with results and answering my questions. The whole process was quick and smooth. I first tried to call other places that were busy until the new year or their doctors didn't have great reviews so I'm happy I was able to get in here. read more

I am a patient of Dr. Faybush. Recently had my second colonoscopy performed by her and I certainly will NOT be a returning patient after this experience! So much to say, I'll try to keep it condensed. Before I was sedated, she kept referring to me as "Susan". She had some other patient info in front of her. Performed my colonoscopy. Gave me the results afterwards telling me "you did great, see ya in ten years". I left the facility with my husband and the report pictures and all. Exactly one month later I got a call from her telling me she removed a small polyp in my colon sent it off to the lab but great news it is benign! She had completely "forgot"? about it and it was never in the report. She actually told me "I had a brain fart". and that she only goes to this surgery center twice a month. This is a Dr. who is clearly overloaded with patients. Running from station to station doing procedures, just following the next piece of paper that happens to be in front of her. We are just a bunch of cattle in a field really. This was very upsetting and gross negligence on her part. Maybe I was lucky, I could have had cancer and she "realized" it 6 months after and called me. She truly is in the right profession....due to the fact that she is an ASS. I would always expect my Dr. to check my wrist band and repeat my name and date of birth......SHE NEVER DID! read more

I recently went here for a procedure and was very impressed with how friendly and helpful everyone was. I first went in for the consultation and then for the procedure. Between the two visits I must have interacted with at least 10 people, from the receptionist all the way up to the doctor, and every one of them was super friendly. I was planning on giving a rating of five stars but had to down grade to four due to the delayed response of my results. My procedure was on a Monday and I was told they would call me with the results by the end of the week or the beginning of the next week. When I didn't hear anything by the next Wednesday I finally called. I was told my results were in and they'd have the doctor's assistant call me with the results. I didn't get a call back that day and unfortunately the next day was Thanksgiving. When Monday came around I called again and finally got a call back Monday afternoon, two weeks after my procedure. I tried to remind myself that no news is good news but I didn't appreciate having to go through the long holiday weekend without knowing my results. read more

Never has my family received worse care and neglect after my son's lifetime GI retired and we needed a new one. The office never told us the doctor we were establishing ourselves with was retiring ASAP, schedule no follow-up appointment after seeing how badly my son's disease had progressed after his endoscopy, then tried to tell us my son WAS given a prescription and follow-up appointment by another doctor but ONLY AFTER WE COMPLAINED of the neglect and all they PRESCRIBED A MEDICATION MY SON WAS ALREADY ON BEFORE WE WENT TO THAT "PRACTICE", was in his chart, and a follow-up 3 months down the road???? DID NO ONE ACTUALLY LOOK AT HIS CHART??? How does that help with a disease that had progressed severely??? - 12/28/23: Initial visit with Dr. Zierer at Mesa Arizona Digestive Health, son had worsening symptoms with his congenital disease, Eosinophilic Esophagitis. - WE WERE VERY CLEAR that we needed a new GI since our son's GI retired. - 1/26/24: Office had him wait a month for the endoscopy!!! - 2/8/24: Staff called with pathology results..."He has eosinophilic esophagitis". Already knew that. And? Nothing. No informing us of the 100+ eosinophil count per high powered field or the strictures or micro abscesses we found out later. No follow-up visit. No treatment. - 2/8/24: Oddly enough, the day of that call I had my initial visit to establish myself as a patient. I asked Dr. Zierer about my son and he said "Let me get the pathology report" and left the room. He never came back! Instead, the nurse gave me the pathology report, left to decipher myself. No treatment/next steps. - 2/9/24: I called the office manager to ask what was going on and only then I was told that Dr. Zierer was retiring! He never told us sitting in front of him twice (son's appointment or mine), no letter the office manager claimed they sent to everyone. - 2/14&16: Misha left messages offering help by Dr. Vulcano and I truly appreciated that. I was out of the country though with a trip planned months ago, spoke after I got back. - 2/26: Message from ARC simulation, a budesonide suspension ordered by Dr. Umar for my son. We already had boxes of budesonide to swallow with maple syrup, explained at the initial intake visit. - 3/6: Went to see the office manager for a note for my son's school, his health affecting his schoolwork but she was rude, asked why we didn't pick up the budesonide (already had boxes of it not helping my son, why we went to see the doctor) and she asked why we waited until 1/26 to get an endoscopy if he wasn't feeling well (because the office made us wait a month, that's when they scheduled it). She said she would talk to the nurse about the school letter and get back but never did. - BIGGEST PROBLEM...I noticed the name on the pathology report wasn't my son's, rather a 65 yo man!!!! We have his personal and health info, violating HIPPA!!! - Went to another practice the same week as seeing the rude office manager on the 6th, said son has a severe case of uncontrolled EoE and should not have been left without a follow-up visit or immediate intervention, started him immediately on a pantoprazole prescription and my son has already received two in house Dupixent injections while waiting for prior authorization which was accelerated and granted to give him the immediate intervention and care he needed since December asking for help from Dr. Zierer. - Thanks for nothing AZ Digestive Health. You took our money for my son's beginning of the year deductible and mine plus our insurance payments for what exactly? - We called our insurance BCBS and filed a complaint along with the BBB. - 3/15: Sent us two certified letters that they were unable to provide care and were terminating us like we had any intention of ever go back to that office for their so-called care. My son needed immediate help and your office could not provide even the slightest relative care for a serious condition. I have screen shots of all our patient portal information before you took this action. We also have all the voice mails with dates. WE NEED THE MONEY BACK THAT WE PAID out of our medical spending account to pay for services this year and get the care that your office did not provide! read more

Save your time, find another place to go. They scheduled me on a Friday at 12 o'clock, I took off work and fasted for 24 hours. I called them on Thursday to confirm and to get the medication I was supposed to drink for my endoscopy and colonoscopy. I came to the hospital the place I picked out, and it came to my attention that they never sent over any emails nor paperwork nor registration, nothing. I reiterate, I had to takeoff work which is not easy for this time of the year. I called the office to see why they never sent over any information and all I got was a snotty remark and told I'd get a call back. It's been an hour now and nothing. This place is a joke! When you miss an appointment they charge you yet when they waste your time there's no accountability. I guess if you're a weather doctor us common folk don't mean much. read more

Dr. Kavathia did what none of the dozen or so previous gastro specialists had ever done for me: He found and we are treating the underlying conditions that made me incontinent for the last 30 years. This clinic is wonderful. The staff is kind and knowledgeable. I have never had to wait more than 15 min., and Dr. K is easy to talk to, willing to partner with us crusty old people--and he is a reassuring presence when you most need one. They have their own out patient surgical clinic and, yes, they will probably recommend that you have testing there. My experience was that the testing was the key to discovering the real problems. I did not ever feel that they were doing more than was needed in order to help me. The results pretty much support that impression. I can make social commitments and know that I will NEVER be humiliated by an uncontrollable bowel again. They gave me back my confidence, and I cannot thank them enough. read more

If you go as an in network facility the anesthesia billing comes to you as out of network and you are responsible for the full cost. They do not tell you this at the time of service. Reviews of medical practitioners are usually driven by two aspects: 1. An MD's beside manner and; 2. The behavior of front office staff. Each are memorable and distinctive, but, should probably be broken-up into two different rating systems or separate reviews. The practitioners and staff at Mesa Gastro doesn't require such division. The office staff wears smiles, engages me in a friendly manner, answers questions w/o hesitation or attitude and are genuinely helpful. While I don't know her name, upon setting the appointment for the above related visit the gal on the phone listened, offered suggestions, heard my concerns about wasting money returning for an ongoing issue, etc, and did not have the usual urgency associated with many other providers that clearly can't wait to get-off the phone. I usually see Physician's Assistant Laura Peterson. She always greets me like she's known me forever. I like that. The familiarity breaks the ice, is comforting, and allows an 'easing into discussion of disgusting gastro-intestinal symptoms'. She listens, doesn't cut me off, takes notes, offers rationale for treatment strategies so I know why I'm treating a certain way. She explains the progressions to and from those treatments should the need arrive, so, I know what to expect. I like that too, as I'm very detail oriented. I want to know 'why'. I've also seen Dr. Sawyer once in office and, originally met him at my procedure. He's not as warm as PA Peterson, but he's thorough and witty, answered all my questions un-rushed, which is all I can reasonably hope or expect. So far, the front and back of the house of this medical group are a reflection upon each other. They're efficient, and not a point of dread when I pick-up the phone to engage them. I was a patient of Dr. Walker. In the beginning, the care was fine by him. The only issue was his MA Bekah, always seemed to have an attitude & was rude. A few weeks ago I called to let them know that I was having severe left upper abdominal pain. They pretty much blew me off and accused me of not taking my normal medications. (Which why wouldn't I? To just sit in agony every day? Makes no sense!) Instead of actually taking it seriously and doing a proper work up since I'm quite complicated with multiple autoimmune diseases. They advised me to take two medications that was already prescribed to me to treat two totally separate issues. And are not even related to the current pain I was having. I ended up going to see my pcp who ordered a ct scan which showed I have an enlarged spleen. I'm currently getting a work up by a Hematologist, Immunologist & a new Gastroenterologist. If I had listened to them, I would still be dealing with the pain and not receiving the proper care or work up for it. Thank god I took it upon myself to seek treatment elsewhere. It's very disheartening that they would treat their patients in this manner. You should be able to trust that they will provide you the best care possible. read more

Worse than horrible customer service.  Provider is supposed to be on my insurance but magically doesn't accept it.  I was seen here in 2016.  Have not gone since.  In 2022, I am told that I must see the same doctor from 2016 or I will need my records reviewed to see if a different provider wants to see me.  I have a freedom of choice.  I should be able to see a first available provider if it is an urgent issue.  Was unable to do this since i had previously seen a provider in 2016, 6 years ago.  Also demanded to see all my records from another gi prior to being able to schedule.  I understand this is important to patient care however I should be able to bring those records.  Also, records are sometimes wrong and a second opinion is needed which means they should not be skewed by the previous records.  I asked for a supervisor and was unable to get one.  Poor poor excuses for healthcare workers. read more

Don't bother - you'll probably never get anyone on the phone anyway. Took my 90 year old mother here. Prior to going, set up her patient portal and filled out everything (which took at least 30 minutes due to medications, etc.) Arrived for appt. and told I had to refill all the paperwork - explained I already did and the rude girl at front desk shrugged and said "sometimes the systems don't talk to each other." Saw Doctor - he prescribed medication. Medication made her sick. Tried to reach office - on hold for over 30 minutes (multiple times). Then they rescheduled her follow-up appointment and I needed to cancel (going elsewhere). Called every day for a week and was on hold for over 30 minutes and no one ever answered the phone. Ended up having to drive there today because I was on hold for 24 minutes - someone actually answered - told them I needed to cancel and they hung up on me. Arrive to cancel and they informed me that they are just "short-staffed" which basically says to me that they don't have time to treat their patients if they cannot even answer the phone. I already have an appointment somewhere else with people who answer the phone and don't make excuses about being short-staffed. Find a different facility - this one isn't worth all the time you will waste trying to just reach someone. read more

I have a complicated GI chronic issue and I always feel like they are doing everything they can to help the situation. The front desk staff are friendly, efficient, and professional too. Aiding in making me feel welcome, they always remember my name. I never usually have to wait to long past my appointment time. Let's face it no doctor's office is ever really right on time. Very deceptive billing and collection tactics. My services were completed and paid for 11 months ago. So I thought. I just recently received a call stating I still owed a large balance. No prior calls, voicemails or bills in the mail, but yet told I needed to pay in full immediately or I would be sent to collections. Rep stated they sent many bills that were returned undeliverable, however the only one received was the only she sent me after our conversation that she was sending me to collections. No address change or updates to the address they had on file were needed. I was dissatisfied initially with the Dr's assistance, as she was very condescending and sarcastic but I let that pass as her having a bad day. But, appears others withy this group shared that mentality. read more

Dr Sapperstein and his staff are great. I was cared for in both a professional and caring manner which is a rarity these days. I will definitely use them again if the need arises. read more
