I've walked Main Street a million times and never went into Arizona West Galleries until today. And am I glad I did! What a find! Browsing books outside, a voice from inside said, "Want to buy a book?" That's all it took. We walked inside and chatted with, gallery owner, Greg Hays, a gregarious, enthusiastic, friendly, extremely intelligent man for 30 minutes. We talked Maynard Dixon (of who his family has a large collection of), politics, health and more! His store is difficult to describe - a haphazard collection of art, books of all genres (including childrens), horse saddles, mirrors, etc. It's layout is orderly chaotic. We walked out with some hugs and his family written book titled, Space Silent Spirit Maynard's Dixon's West, of which Greg signed. We feel like we have a new friend and definitely will be back with regularity. If you haven't been, please do go. You won't be disappointed. read more

Gregory Hays is the most selfless, personable and energetic gallery owner on the entire strip in Old Town Scottsdale. Every time I go in I purchase books (which he has a beautiful selection of). It is a bit of a jumble but there is so much great stuff and the owner is friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. Today was a day where I had no agenda, and being born and raised in Arizona one of my favorite places to have no agenda and walk around is Old Town Scottsdale. While "progress" has taken its toll on a number of the shops, turning them into outlets for purportedly "Arizona" or "Western" goods (once I found an unusual dainty opal cross on a sterling silver chain in a "Southwest" Jewelry store, only to see the EXACT THING for TEN TIMES LESS on Ebay...you guessed it...shipped from China). I go to walk and think, not expecting to be really truly and deeply inspired. Walking into this shop, on a street I haven't walked down since I was a kid (it's a little further south than the touristy window-shopping fluff-type shops), I found myself standing in a time capsule of the Old West. The West of legends. The West of TRUE Westerns, The West that inspired the truly adventurous in spirit in America's earlier days to "Go West, Young Man, Go West!" I didn't know what to look at first, the sheer volume of hidden treasures located in that shop got my treasure-hunting juices flowing! The owner Gregory immediately offered assistance, asking how he could help, and did I know what I was looking for? Truly I did not, as I had not come to Old Town to shop, I had come for...I don't know what I had gone there that day for, but whatever I was MEANT to be there for found ME. Connection. Conversation. True exchanging of ideas. Gregory is a vivacious host, not timid (I would say the OPPOSITE of timid) about letting you know what he thinks and about asking what YOUR opinion on the matter is - be it gun control, what is the nature of man, you know, cocktail party banter - NOT! Don't shy away from digging deep and having a REAL conversation! But most of all, his passion for what he cares about is evident simply by observing him and observing how he treats his shop, like an old and precious friend. I found a rare 90 year-old hard cover copy of "SMOKY THE COWHORSE" by Will James (won the Newbury award in 1927) in pristine condition tucked behind a file cabinet on the floor, not in a neglectful way but in a "let's see who is really looking for this" way because only those who LOOK will FIND. If you ask him, he will recite the book by memory, start to finish with heart! I think I'll ask him to recite a chapter to me on every future visit! I know he would do it. After THREE HOURS of talking (he invited me to sit in the other chair behind the counter as we talked, and customers assumed I worked there) I had met many people who came and went, and Gregory gave each of them the same opportunity to connect authentically. In fact, you never know WHO you are going to meet in that store! I departed the shop with more friends than I entered with, and although THIS TIME I did not purchase anything, I will be back because I now have a genuine and authentic haven to retreat to in Old Town Scottsdale, and next time I WILL bring my money with me, so I can capture a small piece of the historic Southwest to call my own. Bottom line? This shop is a must-see for anyone looking for the REAL Spirit of the Southwest. read more

This gallery was great! I had a good conversation with Greg, whose father started the gallery when Greg was young. The gallery was an eclectic mix of relics, memorabilia and art. While I was there, three people were in the store who had been buying from Greg for years stopped in to say hi. This shop was my favorite in the whole town! I will definitely go back. read more
