I adore Auntie Em's in Historic Downtown Glendale. Half the store is vintage toys, including pedal cars, model trains, action figures and more. The other half is devoted to dollhouses and everything you need to fill them. I've never seen a selection of miniatures like this--everything from books and Christmas ornaments to furniture and food. Prices seemed to be reasonable, although I don't have a frame of reference on what dollhouse accessories should cost. All in all, Auntie Em's is a must-see when you're in that part of town. read more

What a fun store! I have been restoring a dollhouse and it's almost impossible to find brick and mortar stores (other than big box stores) selling dollhouse miniatures anymore. They really had a wonderful selection of everything dollhouse related from the actual houses to every kind of miniature you can imagine. The ladies working were helpful and friendly. They also sell model cars and antique toys as well. There was a guy running that area and he was busy with customers the whole time. I will definitely be back next time I come through Arizona. read more

I occasionally visit this store, located at the corner of 58th St / Glendale Ave in the heart of Historic Downtown Glendale, known for its antique shops situated inside vintage bungalows and cottages. As you enter the store, you will notice 2 partitions: on the left is all dollhouses & miniatures, on the right is pre-1970s pedal cars and tiny model cars. The elderly husband-and-wife team runs the store, and the wife carries out her duty with the dollhouses while the husband is in charge of the pedal cars. The wife usually remembers her returning customers, so sometimes she lets me know the new items in stock, especially the shadow boxes for me to check out, because that's what I usually select to house my miniatures, whenever I needed to make a new project. Sometimes I find several miniatures that I can use per shadow box. I specialize in decorating my boxes for each of my Furkids, which I start from scratch. I even met the adorable "Benji' family dog a couple times- the dog remembered me and greeted me when I came back. I enjoyed playing with him. How nice and befitting to see somebody's pet inside a dollhouse store. The scenery reminded me of growing up back east way back when. Oh, and they even have free yummy popcorn freshly popped like in a movie theatre ;) Being that it's located in a vintage neighborhood, the store started out as a general store since the front door points towards the corner of the block. You can also see the duct pipes that snake around the ceiling, with large windows and brick exterior. You can also hear the heavy blowing of the air conditioner throughout the pipes. And, it even smelled like a used bookstore (I still love books). They carry a large inventory of miniatures in various small scales from all over the world. They have their own dollhouses, room boxes, and shadow boxes on display, so you can cull some ideas or just to enjoy viewing. The prices range from affordable to pricey. And, they also carry books and magazines pertaining to dollhouses. The store has been in business for decades (not sure how many), and I am appreciative of their staying power because I prefer to examine/feel the miniatures in person before purchasing, better than online. They're the only dollhouse-with-miniatures store in metro Phoenix. Thanks for the hospitality. I look forward to visiting again! read more

This is either a 5-star or a 1-star shop, depending on your perspective. Let's start with the argument for 5 stars. This store has a really amazing amount of dollhouse miniatures, ranging from the usual Town Square sets to Bespaq to some of the Reac modern pieces to more Reutter Porzellan than you can shake a stick at (not that you should be shaking a stick around porcelain dishes! don't do that thing!). If you're looking for food or accessories that aren't the standard items in the Hobby Builders Supply catalog... wowza. More than you'll know what to do with, plus all the usual Chrysnbon dishes and metal paintable blanks. There is also a comparatively large selection of 1:24 (half-scale) furniture and houses, and if you're looking for some of the English house kits that are harder to find in the U.S., look here! It is also sometimes possible to find unusual items from estate sales. So if you have the money to embark on a large and elaborate dollhouse project -- or an entire community of large and elaborate dollhouse projects -- in your sunny Arizona retirement, you will love this store. You may as well just buy your retirement cottage within an easy walk, as downtown Glendale is pretty cute. Now, the 1-star problem. If you have ever said you couldn't afford a piece you were looking at -- not that it was too expensive in itself (which I NEVER say because people need to make a living!), but that your budget wasn't big enough for it -- forget ever again having the owner make eye contact when you shop, much less open a case for you. After receiving this treatment on three later visits in which I had money and was eager to spend it, I've given up. Since we're on the subject of prices, it is possible to find bargains (especially on partly assembled house kits), and sometimes the prices aren't notably higher than "eBay plus shipping cost." The shop's also in a quaint antique/tourist district, though, so you would be wise to go for the sake of the extensive selection and not dwell over-much on whether you got a great price. That all said, if you're in the store's target demographic of older women with generous budgets, this store is not to be missed. I have seen the owners bond intensely with the regulars, so it's possible to end up with a great relationship where you get advice on your big projects, too. read more

Attention all aficionados of Miniature Art! BEHOLD your heaven awaits.. from miniature everything to miniature anything. The dollhouses are beautiful and the furnishings equally so. I think miniaturist art (read dollhouses and the such) are making a comeback. While Etsy and the other various interwebz shopping options offer multiple options for purchasing miniature items, this store offers you the opportunity to touch and feel before buying. Comparison for scale is also more helpful in person when building and furnishing a dollhouse imho. The dollhouse scale options offerings are all of them 1:144 to 1:6. Prices vary from expensive to reasonable. It really depends on what you are purchasing. You want a classic porcelain victorian bathroom set? Prepare to pay. You want a hand carved buffet or side table? Prepare to pay. Otherwise you can find reasonably priced furniture and dolls. They carry LUNDBY, which all dollhouse connoisseurs know is the best European dollhouse ever made! I scored a gorgeous LUNDBY from the late 1960s that I will now remodel into contemporary mid-century modern. You read that right. Yes, I know the purists will gasp at me painting over the original wallpaper in a vintage LUNDBY but alas, it must be done! read more

First of all, be prepared to have your breath taken away! I thought I would pass out when I opened theglass double doors that are so fullof event posters, you can't really prepare yourself for what's inside before you walk in. It's the mecca, the manna, the mutha of all miniature shops...and I've been to a bunch. There's things here that you could only hope to find in a museum...but then you find them in the dark corners of Auntie Em's, I took my fellow miniature-phile girlfriend there when she came to visit me from out of town, we spent four hours there. We would have really spent some time if she didn't have to drive back to Las Vegas. This place has it all, from artisan glass to wallpapers from Spain and then Tish has wallpaper books with even more, there is a whole wallpaper section that is neat, orderly and easy to browse through because they are on hangers. I bought three patterns I don't even have rooms for because...well, I will probably buy one of Tish's refurbished houses, speaking of which, she is refurbishing one presently for me that I found at an antique store. Instead of giving her micro-managing detail about how I wanted the rooms, I told her to just do whatever she wished...I mean once you see her work, you know what she comes up with will be much better than anything you could have imagined. Her craftswomanship is incredible, the attention to detail in her projects that are displayed around the store gives the Thorne Rooms a run for their money. And they offer inspiration for what can be done...well, not with my two hands, but in hers, there's no boundaries to her talent! I can't wait until my house is completed, I know it will be a work of art, well back to the store, it is packed to the gills with things you'll never find elsewhere, no not even on ebay and then her prices are really very good too, Bespaq is always going to be expensive, but hey, it's beautiful, you get what you pay for, but the finishing supplies are very competetive and Tish is so friendly, I just love her and going to that store is like going to Disneyland only my feet don't hurt and I'm not standing out in the sun in a long line with a bunch of Hello Kitty Purse carrying twelve year olds...its actually better than Disneyland, in fact I told my husband I would rather go there and have him get me whatever I wanted for my birthday...he was hell bent on Disneyland...go figure, I guess I'll get him a trip to Auntie Em's for his next birthday... read more

Lots of Pedal Cars & Great place to buy old high quality toys for an awesome price! I bought a metal tonka truck in pretty good condition for my son for $10 - it was my favorite toy growing up and now my son will get to have one of his own! She has lots of high quality toys from the 50's and older as well - granted these cost more $, but I am sure the price is very fair. I can't wait to bring my son and future daughter on the way in person to check out the dollhouse stuff :) read more

Very nice store with knowledgeable owner/staff. I stopped in while on a road trip so I didn't have much time. I only shopped the "miniatures" side of the store. They have a lot of inventory so it would be nice to browse awhile. The prices are in line with similar stores and range from very affordable to total splurge. I love this place. The miniatures are fantastic. They have the best selection anywhere. I make a point of coming every time I come to town. The staff are very friendly and helpful, but they do not get in your way; so you need to approach them for help. They can give you guidance on lighting and setting up rooms. There are beautiful displays of rooms that are set up to give you ideas. The inventory is huge. The prices are what would be expected. They get new inventory in regularly. They have neat summer camps to teach children how to build a house and decorate it. They also sell houses and empty rooms for good prices. When I go there I usually spend hours there looking at everything and trying to decide what I want to get. read more
