I visit and have the pleasure of visiting many of the Napa Valley, and specifically Howell Mountain vinyards, and I had the most wonderful morning in the drizzly rain with Susan, the visionary of this spectacular space and piece of mountain property. Her dedication and passion are so apparent. The gentle spirit and kindness she exudes puts you at ease, and then she'll blind you with her wisdom and artistry. And, what gorgeous wines. The estate cab, the Bordeaux blend, and the sav blanc (with a hint of Semillon)... It is a Winery to knock your socks off. I will return soon, and send friends their way, and share with my guests.

Easily the most deserving 5 star review I've given (which could say a lot or a little). In a 1 oz pour, lovely setting, fabulous tour, delicious wines, and really great people. Also, the tour and tasting are free, though it is by appointment only. I didn't feel any pressure to buy, though my group bought some anyways because the wines were wonderful and it always is good to support great small (family) businesses. Also, it's organic and sustainably kept. Woohoo! The full 5 oz review follows. The visit began with four of us arriving almost 20 minutes late due to unexpected traffic in St. Helena and a stop at another winery which lasted a tad longer than expected. There was also next to no cell coverage on the windy road we took up, so we weren't able to call. Despite all this, Jake was very friendly and gracious to us in our lateness. We parked and Jake met us outside. Jake is one of the sons of the couple who began the winery, and he is the current sales guru/tour and tasting leader from what I understand. He moved there when he was 10 or 11 I believe, so he's grown up with this particular property, as well as wine, and was very knowledgeable without being pretentious or arrogant. Anyway, we were greeted outside and then led into the tasting room which is beautiful and very modern. From what I understand his mom designed the whole thing and has great taste. Large windows overlook a small patio and vineyard, and in the distance you can see the hills/mountains on the other side of the valley. We were set to taste two wines, the Loupe and the Coliseum. Since there were only four of us there (out of seven), Jake also pulled out the Oblivion for us to taste. All were delicious. They are noted for their Sauvignon Blanc, which was sadly in the archives (or something) at the time because almost all the cases were bought up already. Anyways, onto the wines, they were all wonderful. We tried a Loupe, which was a rose with nice acidity and a refreshing quality, and very good for warm weather drinking. The Coliseum is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was absolutely fantastic. It was both tannic and acidic, with a mineral quality that added a unique touch. I'm not a Cab fan, but this has converted me. Well, to this winery's Cabs at least. The Oblivion was also wonderful, similar to the Coliseum but a bit fruitier. I believe it's a Cab blend, but I could be wrong. It's gotten 97 points from Wine Spectator, which could be useful or something to ignore. Anyways, in the middle of the tasting the other three members of our party (the non-wine drinkers) showed up and Jake was still gracious and served them the Loupe and the Coliseum. During this time we got to hear the story of how Arkenstone came to be, how they've been stewards of the land, the building process, the planting history and current status, as well as how they came to have the wines they have. It really was fascinating. After the tasting, we walked down past one of the vineyards and entered the cave they built underneath the property. In there we got to walk through where they keep the barrels and fermentation vats. Jake was extremely knowledgeable about the process and was able to walk us through the process, as well as explain why they chose to do what they did. After the tour and tasting (which were both free) we headed back to the tasting room where we had the opportunity to fill out an order sheet for any wines we were interested in. The wines are pricier (the Loupe was $26, the Coliseum was $84, and the Oblivion is around $120) but I think it;s worth the occasional splurge. I bought a bottle of the Coliseum to open in 5-6 years. I didn't feel pressure to buy, nor did I ever feel like Jake was condescending or bothered by our questions. It was nice to learn more from someone who is passionate about wine and knowledgeable. I took a class in college about wine making, so I'm a bit familiar with the terms and process (I'd put myself on the low end of being an intermediate wine lover), and it was really awesome to see the process and learn so much more about it. Long story short, this is my new pinnacle of 5 star experiences, it was that good. If you're making a trip through California Wine Country, I definitely recommend this, and I'm excited to return!

First of all, Tom and Desiree are two of the nicest people you will ever meet in the wine country. They invite you into their home, share food and wine and tell wonderful stories. We plan for 90 minutes and always end up staying longer - sorry Tom and Desiree but time goes by quick when you are enjoying yourselves. The winery makes a Howell Mt Cab and a Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc. The Cab is huge and you can taste Howell Mt in every sip. The Sauvignon Blanc has all the qualities of a superior white but at an affordable price point. Truth be known, both wines are priced less than their peers. Tom states he charges less because he wants to treat people like he would want to be treated. Red Cap Vineyards is by far one of the best finds in all of Napa. We have visited most of the wineries in Napa and this one is hard to top. When it comes down to it, it is the people behind the wine that makes the visit special. These two have vested their lives into Red Cap Vineyards. Your visit will be special and you will walk away feeling like you are part of the Red Cap family.

They took such time in designing the tasting room and outdoor space and you experience it when there. The tasting room views are lovely and I'd be happy to dwell in that space it's so well designed and the views so sweeping across Howell Mountain. The outdoor area has these gigantic, bright verdant trees that were so different! I loved their small leafed, electric green canopy. And the fountain is gorgeous. Arriving here you kind of inhale a bit because it's so surprisingly special and elegant. When it comes to the wine, its grapes are harvested on Howell Mountain which is also where the tasting room is situated hence the phenomenal views. I liked the wine but I only loved 1 or 2 of the bottles. Wine is so subjective though so if you have architectural interest or it's a hobby I would recommend going just for that alone. They gave us a fabulous tour of the cellars and also where they ferment the wine so we got to see the giant vats and of course here about the process. It was such a great experience. I enjoyed learning about their process and their lead wine maker (the correct name for that position I don't know) is a woman which is cool fact. This is a special place and if you're celebrating anything while visiting Napa, this is a fantastic spot to include in your tasting itinerary.

Their was also a light and fun Gamay in limited quantities and a hearty zin. Tasting fee of $45 is waved with three bottle purchase. It's worth the long slow drive up the curvy mountain roads for the view alone and host Brian couldn't have been more welcoming. BUT IT IS!!! I found Summit Lake zin in Rhode Island of all places. I was at a super high end curated wine store and told them I was looking for a particular wine from Calistoga which of course they didn't have. The guy leaned in and told me that he did have something else I might like in the back, which intrigued me. He came back with summit lake zin, told me it was so good that he wasn't even putting it on the shelves. I bought one bottle, went home and tried it, and immediately called him to reserve the rest of what he was willing to sell me. Now that I'm back in northern California, I had been hoping to go to the actual winery to see what it was about. I imagined to myself that I as a mostly cabernet drinker, couldn't possibly like the rest of what they made if the thing I loved from their lineup was zin, of all things. I joined their email list and was emailed on "zin day" that they were doing a 30 percent off their zin so I bought a bunch, set up a wine tasting on the day I was going to pick it up, and waited for the day to come. When we arrived, it was a gorgeous November Saturday, and all the leaves were turning shades of rust and gold. We met up with Heather and her fellow canine greeter, and made our way to some benches in an open grass area. This is EXACTLY what I think about when I imagine how Napa and Sonoma's wine history looked like when they were beginning. No castles and froufrou- just honest to goodness great farmers and ranchers, trying their hands at grapes, and making something beautiful that showcased their passion. Heather was super friendly, and the ultimate no fuss host. We loved her sweet dog and the surrounding horses, chickens and goats, and the relaxing atmosphere of the property. I knew I loved their zin and I convinced myself the rest of their wines were likely bad to protect myself from a huge letdown, but I was wrong! SO WRONG! Literally all of their wines were absolutely delicious. I'm not a port person, so that didn't do anything for me, but their petite Syrah was delicious, their cabernet was incredible, and of course, their zin is magic. Despite the challenges of covid, their location tucked out in the middle of the wilderness in Howell Mountain in Angwin, or anything else, this family owned and operated winery is doing some incredible work on some gorgeously blended, and expertly crafted wines. These wines easily stand up to some of Napa's finest, and in my opinion, they still craft the best zin I've ever tasted. I'm a huge fan and will continue to support this incredibly talented family in their winemaking!
